  • I got a nasty cut from my saddlers knife and went to hospital. This is a bit of a reminder to be careful, and I also chat about how I get my tools lovely and sharp with diamond stones and leather strops!

Ouch Harry - glad you're ok. It reminds me of an old great uncle who left school on the Friday, was 13 on the saturday, started as an apprentice in a forge on the Monday. By Monday afternoon he'd chopped off part of one of his fingers. He lived to be a very old man and was much more careful with his other fingers.

Clean cuts generally heal fast. I nicked myself yesterday whilst finishing a knife blade but already the cut has almost healed.

Oh, I want those diamond stones! Not that I have grown tired of any digits, but they seem to... well, work. And my water stones never seem to be completely flat.

I dropped an anvil (150 lbs) on my right 5 th finger. I guess I should have gotten some help as it suddenly became heavier than I thought it was.I am glad you are ok Harry.

It really doesn't matter how careful you always are, if you work with sharp or dangerous things you will eventually get hurt. The real trick is to make it as few times as possible in a life time and not having a crippling or fatal injury.

Hope we're not beginning a countdown here, I remember Bob Villa's assistant Riley, a most clumsy fellow, every episode he'd be missing a digit or sporting new stitches, after a while he was referred to as 80% Riley.☺

Ouch! I've done that before. I've cut myself twice and both times were because I didn't take the time to sharpen my knives. I've heard most cutting accidents come from dull knives. The second time with 8 stitches, I learned.

Been there, done that. Glad I am in good company!
My left index finger seems to have taken the brunt of the damage over the past 50+ years... Stories about just a few: My first experience with improperly using a knife by pulling towards me shows up there... the scar looks like the frown from a frown emoji ;~( There is also a bow saw scare along the right side of the middle joint and some other scar on top of the small joint.
Perhaps the most bizzare wound happened with a froe on top of the small joint of my right middle finger... a moment of inattention while restoring the edge with a file and it bit me! I was working in front of the public... I crushed my hand into my thigh to control the bleeding and left the site to clean and bandage the wound. The insult to the injury came later in the day as kid in the crowd was persistent in wanting to know why I had dried blood all over my leg. LOL
It happens... and we learn lessons from it. I feel bad for the kids whose parents never teach them how, nor let them experience using a knife. I guess they will grow up and magically know how to use a knife when they reach adulthood... ;~)

I have been bitten by the sharpening bug myself. I can trim the hairs on my arm with my axes, knives and chisels.
However, I am now directing my energy to sheathing my tools as I fear the type of accident you reported here.
Timely advice to us all who like making things with sharp tools.

im feel you mate...i used to cut myself also,it not that badly cut and just really minor on my finger...but the bleeding is not stoping and almost faint
im notice that any injury around finger take time to stop bleeding..so i guess we should be prepair for the worst, since we all work around sharp tool😅..it good to have aid kit place really near to us,and take cup of coffee every few hour..
fast recovery to you fellow craftman

I keep my sharp leather knives and skivers on a magnetic wall strip, and my kitchen knives in blocks or slotted drawer holders (blades down). All my stuff is VERY sharp. They say using a sharp knife is safer than using a dull one overall.

I can't afford a round knife, but a couple of months ago I bought a half round/single point head knife in a sale
As is traditional with many leather tools it was not quite good enough for cutting leather, and you must do the final sharpening & polishing yourself
However, it was good enough to cut fingers..........
The first item I made with it was a sheath/cover, with a securing strap

Ouch. Can happen to anyone Harry. I sliced down my index finger and needed hospital treatment, but it knitted together and you have to really look to see the scar.

    • @roxannemoser2725
      @roxannemoser2725 6 лет назад

Ivan Great Same here, but it was my thumb. 8 stitches and now you can barely see the scar. I was very lucky. My two accidents were because I didn't sharpen my blade and used more pressure to cut. That can equal easy slipping. I take the time now whether I'm running behind or not.

My awl fell off my workbench and I automatically made to catch it. I did, but not before it had pierced my hand and hit the bone. Painful, and required a treatment of antibiotics and daily bathing in TCP to prevent sepsis. I'm letting things fall now.....

In Dutch we have a saying (free translated) an accident sits in a small corner. Sometimes it happens when least expected. A few year ago I cut off 2 fingertips with a broken tea mug. Luckely they re atteched them but still not able to feel anything with them.

Danggit Harry! I wish you would have kept this on the down low. You cutting yourself is like me cutting myself, which I haven't yet but now fear it's in my future.
I've got a double, maybe triple dose of empathy hard wired in my DNA. Now combine that with my thinking of you as an equally talented peer, admittedly a peer with superior video presentation skills which I'm inclined to believe is easily countered with my superior singing ability. What? Of course singing is valid leatherwork counter skill. Ever heard of "Singing while you work?" I do it all the time, with a wireless headpiece microphone no less.
The other thing, Harry, this is out of character for you, the Mr. Rogers of RUclips Leatherwork Videos. If I were your Producer I would suggest (in a kind way of course) more sunshine and rainbows, Harry, and less monsters under the bed.
That said, knives have always scared the crap out of me. As such, I'm ever mindful and extra careful. Same with power tools. The best advice I can give anyone is never get comfortable with tools. They are all out to get you.
