I just graduated with a BA in Art History and now work full time in DC ( in real estate). I hope to go to get a master but an art history degree gives you so many skills beyond just knowledge of art. You gain writing experience, critical thinking skills and the ability to translate your thoughts into words and speech. You learn how to argue and get your point across along with an intuitive mind that is made to think in new and creative ways. F anybody who tells that you won’t get a job with a art history degree !!!
A BA in art history that included study abroad and travel makes you a great choice for a travel agent. You have a grasp of history, culture, and art that people are looking for. I just got a job as one and as travel is picking up again it's paying really well. :) (And being a travel agent some agencies will actually send you on work vacations to amazing locations to get experience in places you haven't visited. I'm going on a week long cruise in the Bahamas next year, all expenses paid! We get to swim with dolphins!)
that sounds absolutely amazing! if you don't mind me asking, what school did you study at? I'm debating art history as my major but am unsure if it matters which school I go to.
I know the feeling! It can be really scary, but at the end of day as long as you're making the most out of your degree, it doesn't really matter what your major is.
I have a friend with a history degree that now has a job in medical copywriting. He said that job just wanted you to have any bachelor's degree. I feel like there are probably quite a few jobs like that out there. I took art history one semester because it was one of the only classes left for me to choose from. I was dreading it but it ended up being one of my absolute favorite classes I've ever taken so far. So much so that I want to major in it! My friend, this video and all of these comments discussing the different skills you get from this degree are pushing me to go back to school to pursue this.
I own a Native American pottery and jewelry store I will most definitely hire someone with this major. I am in Albuquerque, NM and I have a general manager position available.
I just found your channel and I'm in love! I'm not necessarily studying Art History but I do plan to switch my majors over to Ancient History with a minor in Renaissance Studies.
Thank you, I'm choosing a major right now after two years of art school and a gap year. I have no idea what I actually want to do but I think this is what I want to go into. Thanks for highlighting all this important information!
thank you so much for making this video. it helped me a lot! I’m major in art history and a random guy told me that i should change my major because i can’t do anything with it after i graduate and he said a lot of things that really lower my motivation to study. but your video helped me to get back my motivation. thank you.
I will say it takes a lot of creativity and it may require looking outside of the roles you originally were drawn to, but its definitely possible! Fair warning though, he won't be the first one to tell you haha.
I just found your channel but omg I love it, and I am currently binging all of it. I am a junior Art History Major and Anthropology minor with an emphasis on Queer History of the Renaissance. Keep up the great work!!
A great entry level career with a History of Art degree is Human Resources in the Government Sector: all you need to say in the interview is just like a work of art, the life cycle of an employee has provenance (onboarding, salary history, benefits history, evaluations, personnel conduct, et. al.) With my Art History degree, I had a great career in HR for seven years and transitioned to Transportation Administration. So, having an Art History degree has some benefits: an entry level job in HR or government with good salaries, health benefits and government pensions for retirement. So, don’t settle for less by being pigeonholed into a career in the Art world or the museum circuit, let alone an unpaid internship where you’re witness to scholars patting each other on the back or giving each other a rimjob through essays and lectures. It takes years of hard work and perseverance after college, so don’t assume that you’re “special” 🦄 🌈. Learn where and how to land and never settle for less.
You can also consider architecture, graphic, and/or interior design. Also, fashion design, sales & marketing, photography, or start your own art gallery. Never discount a Liberal Arts degree regardless of the major.
im a now history major, I switched from english. I love the aesthetics of old buildings, books, its very fascinating so picked history I'm not sure I'm that passionate about art/paintings but I love museums and reading about the story and history of them. I am considering anthro as but I'm not sure, I keep changing mindor.
It really depends on what your ideal job is. If you don’t want to work in curatorial or academia, a PhD may make you over qualified. If you’re interested in career exploration, check out acceptedconsulting.com
Choloe, You are so good in explaining all of these things in art history. I am going back for an associates in the major, I come from a social science background. BA in Politicial Science/MA in International Relations and also BA in Foreign Language. The veteran administration approved a post covid rapid job training and well art history is one of the majors. I took one art history class in my local community college and it was good. I am planning in combining this major with my other degrees as I have been abroad and you see art all over the place and its nice to know a little bit about the history it makes a big difference. For Art history you can look into your local county for jobs. I have found one in my current county and it does say to have worked with children and public speaking, I have both. In addition I am a Junk Journal maker...so the major will come in handy. Thanks!
Love the video! Fellow Bruin Art Historian 🐻🎨☺️ I agree with all this fantastic advice! Just to share my story, I did an art history BA knowing I probably wouldn’t work in the art world. I started working in the entertainment industry before I transferred to UCLA. Art history informs my perspective of visual narrative that is slightly different than my peers who went to film school. The curation planning and museum studies I did has allowed me to think about the function of live theatrical spaces where I have worked, which has opened up an understanding of marketing needs. The list goes on and on. Admittedly, I do often get the “why did you study art history?” side eye quite a bit, some people have a reductive idea of what art history is; just never doubt or apologize for the skills you know you worked hard to cultivate.
Studying Art History is incredibly fascinating but it is very difficult to find work with it you can work in a museum or work as a guide but those are relatively low paid jobs the real good jobs such as museum director curator or art history teacher at higher or adult education limited and everyone wants that job when a place becomes available there are at least 10 candidates that is the problem with this study.
I’m a senior In highschool and i am very very passionate about art, history, and architecture. I’m really interested in majoring in art history, but every video I’ve seen speaks on how hard it is to make money. Does anyone else have their own positive experience?
I am an art history student also and wanting to go into graphic design also because I love to study art and do it. I am still working on some skills. 😅
Hi Chloe! I studied Art History in Nigeria but my greatest challenge ever since my graduation from the university is securing a job in my field. Most of the requirements is that you have to own a master's degree or higher. I will appreciate your advice if possible mentorship from. I will be glad hearing from you
What would you recommend for somebody who is a rising senior who is majoring in history, to start building their experience in areas such as museum work, in the art world and so on, also how to highlight such skills?
Hi there! I am currently an junior in high school and is wondering about going into either Art History to work in an museum as a curator, researcher, journalist, or archivist. I am also interested in archeology and was wondering if taking this as a minor would best my chances with museums/internships?
There should be a class in university about resumes and making sure that you are building your professional experience one way or another, even as a full time student.
Hi Chole! Thank you for the great advice in your video. I am graduating with a BA in Art History & Econ from UC Davis in a month, but now I face the dilemma of making a choice: I got into the Courtauld (London, UK) for their grad program, and I also received a job offer (PR/Corporate Communication) in the States. I was very sure about grad school but not anymore :/ Would you suggest working before getting an MA? I don't plan to do a Ph.D./research/curation as of now. I am more interested in the business/marketing side of the art industry. Is it hard to go back to school after working for 1-2 years?
Hi Noemi! great question. it really depends on the student and what they do outside of the classroom. So usually I had 1-2 classes per day and a few hours of reading, research and writing papers everyday (art history is a reading/research heavy major). I worked throughout school in multiple internships and jobs that filled my days. Some are in clubs, organizations, etc. It really depends on the student and what they want to get out of their college experience. Usually my evenings were spent doing homework with friends. Hope that helps!
@@ChloeLandis thank you!! It really does I’m currently in cc and kinda nervous to commit to a major because I’m afraid of what it would entail but you video helped a lot!

Hey! I know you made this video a while ago so you may not see this, but I’m an art history undergrad who is graduating 2022, and I would love it if you could tell me what the application process for grad school was like and what you would consider most important in the process?
