    Awsome! I picked the SA1 a couple months back before people started really searching out this amp. Absolutely love it! Thing makes a great iem amp. I still use my Asgard 3 for single ended. Everything else is the SA1. BTW, the gain switches drive me crazy. Fortunately I have only needed to switch up when EQing because of some of my preamp values on some presets require me to. Highly recommend! Thank you!

    Thanks for a great review of the SA-1! I have not heard the Schiit amp, but your comparison with the Soloist is completely consistent with my experience. In my use of the SA-1, I didn't mind the placement of the gain switches and usually used low gain. The SA-1 was sitting on my desk, not in a stack, and I could tilt up the front of the unit to change the gain if needed. I also left the impedance switch on low. It's pre-outs did a great job driving my KEF LS50 powered speakers.

    Videos like this are such a useful service. Purchasing a dedicated headphone amp provided a great improvement in listening enjoyment at my house.
    I looked at the Burson, but could not afford that amount. (I also didn't need a pre-out to speakers or power amp.)
    I ended up with the Lake People G111 which is very natural sounding and powerful, running Beyerdynamic DT 880 (600 ohm) and DT 1990 (250 ohm) headphones extremely well. I had tried the Geshelli Labs Archel 2.5 pro previously, but its sound was just too sterile for my taste.

      I just had mine delivered a few days ago and I’ve been in sonic bliss since receiving it. I had nothing class A/AB of this nature until hearing this and I guess the closest thing I could compare it to would be a good tube pre but it’s different than that at the same time. Definitely enjoying it as paired primarily with Clears and HD6xx among some others. It also handles iems respectably well. Points of reference being IMR R1 Zenith, JVC HA-FW01, Sennheiser ie80s, and recently Mangird Xenns Up (which are fantastic and so musical and lovely on the SingXer!
      Certainly shines in balanced output whereas SE, as you’d imagine with most balanced circuit ‘budget’ amps, is not particularly spectacular or anything to write home about. But boy oh boy is it magical in full balanced class A operation!

Soloist appeared to be a better amp and SA-1 does not have enough power / volume for Hifiman Susvara or it barely has enough volume for some songs at almost max volume. It looks more beautiful than the other two amps and also as compared to the amps that I own (A90 and FA-10) and I hope that it would sound beautiful as well. Feeling excited though and I can't wait for the amp to arrive. I suspect that it would be less detailed than A90 and would not be as clean however if it has smoother yet comparable level of treble detail, slightly fuller soundings mids and hard slamming bass than I would be very happy.

    Very nice and thorough review as usual ! I have the SA-1 mated with the Singxer SDA-6 Advanced DAC along with the Beyerdynamic T1.3 headphones. Everything gets along very well into a rich and detailed sound. It's also quite forgiving with lesser quality music. I originally picked the Singxer kit to be a "B" kit for my second setup but it became my "A" kit since it's so musical. Voices, strings and details such as clapping have a degree of realism that I had not heard before. I have a second setup comprised of Violectric V100 + Gustard A18 that is more neutral. The Violectric provides better bass control but the Singxer is more musical and provides a better degree of realism depiste being warmer and darker.

    Great review, this amp is the belle of the ball around the interwebz right now! My SPL Phonitor E has the gain dipswitches on the bottom as well. It's moved to the front so I can slide it forward a bit, tilt and adjust the switches but it is a PITA. I'd love to hear how the Soloist 3XP with the better "warm" op amps (vivids?) stacks up against the singxer on hard to drive planars (HE6 SEv2, Susvara, 1266 Phi TC). The A90, 789, THX stuff all fall apart with these hard to drive headphones. Those 3 are more analytical where the SA-1 has the warmer signature so interesting options.

    @Ray-dl5mp 2 года назад +1

    Hey, I just want to say I recently purchased this Amp, and a huge reason was your review and comments on it. I figured it's possible the burson soloist would be even more impressive, but you couldn't decide which sound signature is truly better. So based on those thoughts, and others - it seemed like this amp was doing something truly special at its price point. Got it on sale too which helps :) Thank you so much!
    I thought I knew what HiFi was before I tried this - I now feel like I REALLY DO, (hopefully that makes sense). This sounds incredible with HD600, Modius, and SA-1 with high gain on single ended. I haven't even tried balanced yet, but I will soon. Seems to be some disagreement on HiFi forums whether balanced or single ended is better for my headphones on this amp, but most people say balanced is the way to go including you on this amp. I can't believe how good this sounds already.
    I'll try to report back what I think of SE vs balanced with HD600. I can only compare it to my Magni 3+ but I really prefer the SA-1 even in SE. It's so easy to get lost in the music and hear the timbre of everything, but nothing is annoying on the treble. But it also doesn't feel soft or anything, like everything goes together (non modded version). I also don't have to EQ a low shelf like I did with the Magni 3+ to get good bass. This just sounds right with no EQ..like this was meant to be. I LOVE IT!

      @PassionforSound  2 года назад +1

      So glad you're loving it so much, Ray! In particular I'm glad that you've been able to experience what a quality, discrete design amp can sound like. It's hard to go back to basic, chip-based designs once you've heard something like the SA-1

    • @Ray-dl5mp
      @Ray-dl5mp 2 года назад +1

      @@PassionforSound yes I feel like everyone should have something like this or better. This should be the baseline for hifi audio. They did an incredible job. Now I start the journey towards figuring out if I want the promised more layering sound of a multibit or r2r approach. Because even though the sound is tremendous , I do now see what you mean about everything being forward with the modius. I probably can make this better with Bifrost or better. Looking forward to it but might wait a bit. I pick up so many sounds that I didn’t hear before and it all is an emotional, great listening experience. So I don’t want to talk anyone away from the modius because it’s still great. I just look forward to a more layered sound potentially in the future.

    Hey thanks for the review! I was wondering how does it compare to the Topping A90, do you like this one better? I also watched Currawong's review, he mentions that the Amp doesn't run at it's full potential by default, because it has a DC protection circuit which can be bypassed by opening the amp and changing position of 4 jumper pins (he explains it better than me). This apparently makes the amp really wake up. Is this something you could try and report back to us?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +3

      Hi Till, the jumpers are a DC protection circuit and because I use so many different DACs during testing, etc. I've been reluctant to remove the protection. Perhaps I will in the future, but I'm flat chat on other reviews.

    Which of the two is better suited for metal music? Or gaming? I ordered a Jot 2 for the impact, warmth and fullness that I’ve been reading about. Is the SA-1 comparable with slam/impact? I currently have a 789 for neutral listening, and even though it is punchy, i find the guitars in metal music to be a little sterile at times and the overall mix to be a little flat. Need an amp to compliment my 789 - one with flavor, warmth and impact.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +2

      The Jot 2 is definitely the more foot-tapping amp and the treble has a bit more bite. The SA-1 is more refined though so it has its own benefits. As to which is better for metal and gaming, I can't really say because different people value different characteristics.
      The 789 is definitely a very flat sounding amp in general and can suck the life out of music.
      What is probably recommend to replace the 789 is the Rebel Amp. I've got the review coming very soon and it's awesome. Single ended only, but it's great.

    About the balanced vs SE outputs: Singxer say on their site that the SE o/p should really only be used with the S/E input and do not recommend using the S/E output when using the balanced input. So as they actually say this I guess to do it justice it might only be fair to review the SE output with the SE input ?

      Hi Björn, I didn't for the testing, but I have since tried it with shunts in place and while it might make a modest improvement, not convinced that it's worthwhile removing warranty and risking damage to your products for the modest improvement I heard. It's particularly challenging with a product like this where there's a long delay between testing with and without the shunts installed so expectation and poor auditory memory (which we all suffer from) come into play.

    Hi finally good to find a pro reviewer from Melbourne. I got the Sa 1 last week. I have got schiit bifrost 2 and Asgard 3(which i am selling). Pre out is going to kef lsx which is really amazing. Crisp clear sound with control deep bass.
    In comparison i found Asgard 3 to be little more engaging and had more energy. I was wondering if you had taken off the DC from SA 1? Would you be able to make a video to share your findings as this is a hot topic in forums atm. Thank you

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +1

      Hi urbenkam, I have removed the DC offset (and subsequently replaced it) because I didn't find the difference significant enough to justify the potential risk (although I've not explored the risk too deeply). To me, the SA-1 sounds best in high gain mode so do try that if you haven't already and also make sure you're actually matching volumes with the Asgard 3. The Asgard is a great amp so it's not surprising that the SA-1 isn't blowing you away in comparison, but I think on high gain and with matched volumes, it should be keeping up and possibly slightly superior in some ways (detail retrieval, etc.)
      As for a video on the jumpers, I don't think I'll go down that path as it might be a bit niche, but let me think on it... maybe I can slip in a short video off the normal cycle of releases

      You started off by NOT volume matching, which sort of says you don't know that something being louder will make it sound better than something that actually produces better sound. You said you weren't impressed by the Singer ... until you thought/noticed it wasn't as loud/loud enough. So you turned it up and it sounded better. Who'd have thought!
      You didn't mention anything about how you matched the volume levels, so one can only assume you didn't.
      Doesn't really inspire confidence in what you're doing.
      Sorry for being harsh, because I've liked your reviews up until this one ... but if you're representing yourself as being able to differentiate between two sounds, you should really demonstrate you know how human hearing works.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +2

      All of my reviewing begins with a listen to the product in isolation. That's when I was unimpressed and didn't have enough volume.
      When I'm running any comparisons I'm very careful to match the volumes of various devices because I understand the impact of loudness perception as I explained at the opening of the video.
      You're making incorrect assumptions about my testing and reviewing process. It's very important to consider a product in isolation and for relatively extended listening and not rely solely on comparisons which may reveal some important characteristics, but which will sometimes fail to reveal or mask others due to our reliance on the contrast when conducting A/B comparisons. The extended listening that I start with is where I form my initial impressions and discover usability quirks (good and bad) before refining and expanding my thoughts with select comparisons.

      All three will do great, but I'd take the Soloist everytime because it's the best of them and can be altered using Burson's other op-amps. However, if you want something a little smoother and warmer out of the box, the Singxer is the next best choice.

    Based on your reviews, I really wanted to get the Burson soloist 3xp. I contacted Burson, but they said it wouldn't work as a preamp for my powered bookshelf speakers and powered subwoofer at the same time, as there wasn't an RCA output on the back to connect to the subwoofer, only the 2 XLR's which could connect to the speakers. You had mentioned that you had used the preamp on the SA-1, and I was wondering if you had also connected a subwoofer, and if so, how did it sound? Also, do you think the SA-1 would be a good choice for my setup, and would you recommend any other amps, besides the Schiit jotunheim 2, for a speaker/subwoofer set up?

      Hi Mike, I don't have a sub to test, but the SA-1 does have both outputs and should therefore work well with actives and sub. It's definitely my recommendation under $1000 and better than Jot 2 (which is also great)

      @@PassionforSound Thanks again for helping me make my next purchase decision. I think I have it down to adding the singxer sa-1, as opposed to the topping A90, to pair with my Schiit bifrost 2. Would I be better off getting the Burson Conductor 3XP? I ask, because you had highly recommended the Burson soloist 3xp (which I almost purchased), but it wouldn't work out for me because I have added a subwoofer to my system. It seems that the conductor 3xp may work because of the xlr and rca outputs on the back. I'm not sure if the amp/pre amp section on the conductor is the same that's in the soloist 3xp. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +1

      Very glad to help!
      The Conductor is kind of like the Composer and Soloist melted down into a single chassis, but that will mean some degree of compromise so I expect it's a good choice, but maybe not quite to the level of the Soloist. I don't believe the Conductor has the exceptional volume control circuit that provides the transparency in the Soloist so that'll be one difference. It's still a great option if it meets your needs, but the Bifrost 2 and Singxer SA-1 should be about as good and perhaps more versatile due to being separates with their own power supplies, etc.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +2

      Generally, most amps will be fine with any headphone (as is the case here) so if I don't specifically say anything about headphone pairings, you'll be pretty safe with anything. In some cases (e.g. Schiit Jotunheim 2 or Denafrips Artemis) I might specifically address the tuning of the amp being more coloured and then recommend certain types of headphones that I don't think will work as well, but the SA-1 is excellent in that it's pretty neutral and pretty smooth sounding so any headphone from dark/warm to analytical/bright will sound great from it.
      The final factor is quality and I'd normally recommend pairing amps with headphones at similar performance levels. The SA-1 is an upper mid-tier amp so I'd suggest pairing it with headphones like the Ananda, Arya, ZMF Auteur, Focal Clear, HD800S, etc.

    I've had my SingXer SA1 only for a few days now. I was not a believer in burn in before but this unit changed my thoughts. Too me, better than the A90 which I've returned. The volume knob took awhile to adapt. 4 to 5 o'clock at low gain. Is there any long-term damage that can be caused by running at almost full turn?
    In addition, Do you know at what point the amp switches from class A to AB..
    Being that noise is so low, is there any musical/ transient negatives running in high gain on this unit and just leave it.
    In regards to Z switch. Im finding when going to high Z you really need to bump up the volume to match low z. Since doing the volume bump, I find the Z switch a benefit. If just going to high Z without bump, it did nothing positive.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад

      Hi Neil, glad you're enjoying it. Using higher volume shouldn't ever cause issues unless you're experiencing distortion in which case you'll be killing your headphones (and maybe your ears).
      I don't know about the A/AB question, but it's also not something I'd really bother worrying about so long as it sounds good either way (which it does).
      Finally, the Z switch can bring positive or negative traits depending on your setup so if you like it with it on Hi-Z then stay with it 🙂

Upon switching to high gain, although I lost a great deal of volume control, being paired with my Focal Clear MGs, I feel that I’ve gained greater dynamics and richness, along with a slightly brighter treble. I have one of these on order to pair with my new Ares II and ZMF Eikons. Was considering the Burson but at half the cost it seemed more sensible.
    I'm interested if you think this + the A90 and some other amps are starting to outdate the THX 789. From what I've heard it definitely sounds like the newer stuff is really warping the value propositions on high end solid states.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад +1

      I do think the A90 and SA-1 are leaving the THX 789 looking a little ordinary these days, but they're also priced quite differently - particularly the SA-1. The 789 is still an excellent entry into high-end audio, but the SA-1 is a BIG step up. The A90 is a funny one for me. It's very capable, but not particularly enjoyable whereas the SA-1 has both bases covered

      My pleasure and there's no issue using SE in and balanced out. They're quite different in how they operate so there's no need toatch them up. Balanced in is all about noise rejection. Balanced out is more about greater power and perhaps better channel separation, but definitely not noise rejection.

    I really wanted the Jotunheim 2 to be better because it looks so beautiful and this one looks so boring but I guess it's the better choice. With import fees they cost the same in Europe, only that for the Singxer the price is all for the amp while for the Jotunheim 2 you're paying the same amount for a cheaper amp and €100 in taxes. If I could get the Jotunheim 2 at USA price I'd probably get that one just for the looks, counting on the differences being inaudible.

    Thanks for another well informed and detailed review. Unfortunately, the more I watch your reviews I find digging into my pockets to find extra budget!
    This looks like an excellent option as a headphone amp because it has that warmth and body that I feel could counter the sharp analytical nature of the HD660S headphones. Have you heard the HD660S headphones and, if so, would you recommend the SA-1 for them? Another option is the Gustard H16 amp. Have you heard this amp and, if so, how would you compare them?

      As for your question, I haven't tried the HD660S, but if you're feeling that it's too analytical, the SA-1 could be a great option to tame it slightly without going too far. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get any Gustard gear to try yet either.

    I have one problem with these amps and Chinese audio in general and that's the online community fueling the hype. All these Chinese boxes are one season wonders, than a new model comes out, gets all the hype and the previous model is suddenly 'worthless'. Same goes for the DACs, the depracation is insane.
    They are only good if you're not into internet, just look up the reviews on forums etc, buy and never look at these forums again :-))

      There's a lot of truth to that, but I'm not sure if Singxer fits the same model as I don't recall seeing lots of models month-after-month like with Topping, SMSL, etc. With those brands (and the IEM ones) it's a bit overwhelming with the neverending flow of new products.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад

      Yeah, the bottom gain switch isn't ideal, but it's only really an issue if you have headphones with very wide-ranging power needs.
      Hottyson, the gain switches won't change the sound at all, but these are also different to the Z switch (Hi-Z, Lo-Z) on the front which changes output impedance with minimum effect. Not sure if you were mixing up the two.

      @@PassionforSound thanks for the reply. I switch between my headphones and IEMs quite often (I love them all!) and find myself switching gain switches almost as often so I'm not sure if Z switches for changing impedances would be enough in my use case.

    What they gain w/a power switch up front they lose with gain switches on the bottom. If you have multiple headphones you’re gonna be frustrated.

    Let's hear it for Burson. Viva Australian audio! (Loud applause). The very curious (sorry could not resist) smarty pants white guy youtube reviewer who claims to live in Japan had to bypass the sound crippling d.c. protection circuits (and in the process void the warranty) to get what he considered to be good sound from the Singxer SA-1. Intentionally including circuitry which lessens the sound quality and putting the gain switches on the bottom while putting the much less useful impedance switches in an easy to reach area makes me wonder what they are smoking at Singxer. And, while we are at it, of all the names to choose for your brand: Singxer?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  3 года назад

      I agree that the Burson gear is wonderful and comfortably better than the SA-1, but I also think the DC protection thing is over-rated. I'm thinking more and more of doing a short video on it myself because I don't believe the differences are THAT big having tried it myself. The SA-1 is a really nice amp at the price. Don't forget the Soloist costs significantly more for that jump in performance

    Zeos Pantera / Zreviews compared the GS-X Mini to the SingXer SA-1. And
    he said they sound the same. Definitely a must buy for me is SingXer
    SA-1 because I live in Europe and headamp has no resellers in Europe. If
    I ordered from US, I would pay extra taxes and it is too expensive for
    me. And I'm still saving a lot of money with that. I’m glad it sounds
    very similar. I was informed that SingXer SA-1 is the best solid state
    amp for my future sennheiser hd 800 s headphones. At first I wanted to
    buy a topping a90 with hd 800 s but I found out that this combination
    would sound too flat and sterile and it would be a boring sound in
    music.
