Hi folks, I just wanted to clarify something I said in this video. I suggested that the Jot 2 wouldn't pair well with slightly warmer headphones, but I need to clarify it so as not to put people off. I LOVE the Jot 2 with my Empyreans which are quite rich sounding and I've just tested the Sundaras with the Asgard 3 and they sound great too so they'll only sound better with the Jot 2. To clarify what I was saying, if you enjoy a warm sound then don't hold back - buy the Jot 2 and love every second of the rest of your listening life 😉. But, if you're seeking a more neutral / analytical sound, the Jot 2 plus a warmer headphone will be taking you a little way away from neutrality. It's not crazy thick like some low quality tube amps, but it's warmer than neutral.
@@satyamgupta562 I happen to own THX789 too but I cannot specifically comment on Sundara pairing. THX789 is alot more neutral bright, sounstage wise its flat with lack sense of depth, dynamically less engaging, slightly less detailed, less punchy. Imo, thx 789 is a better pairing for warm headphones instead of jot
@@broccolee8250 It’s crazy how fast op-amps amplifiers actually got better and flooded the market after the 789 and heresy. Those 2 were my first amps but the 789 sounds like a dinosaur compared to the Magnius imo. Discrete designs are so cool to look at
This is the review that sold me on the Jot 2. I recently upgraded to this from a Topping A30 Pro (which was recommended on a certain website because of its measurements, but to me it sounded flat and boring) to pair with my new Schiit Bifrost 2/64 (which I also upgraded from a Topping D30 Pro for the same reason) and for the first time in ages I actually don't feel the need to upgrade! Everything I have listened to so far sounds absolutely fantastic! Thank you for this review my man, you are a legend!
That's brilliant! I'm so glad I could help and I'm even more glad that you could try it out for yourself to experience the difference between good measurements and good sound.
Ordered mine as a 2021 gift to myself, 6 week backlog on the phono stage, but after the last couple weeks of listening, spectacular purchase. Great work on the 10ksubs brother, well deserved.
ive had the original jot for a few yrs now and have been wanting to upgrade for awhile and am now getting ready to do it. i literally just watched your original jot review 1 minute before this one popped up. lol awesome
lol nvrmnd. no dac in the review is a bummer but ultimately doesnt effect my decision. There still ISNT a digital IN on this thing! i wasnt happy with the sound of the original just like you, but the final killer for me was when i purchased a cd transport and then realized i cant even use it with the jot bc theres no digital IN. and they left it like that on the jot 2...unreal i did really like a cpl other of your vids on the chords and rme. anyway, i subbed. cheers!
Hi Tim, yes, the Jot 2 is still not a full, all-in-one for external transports, etc. That said, the Jot 2 plus a Modius or Bifrost 2 will be a brilliant setup.
10kSubs! Yay the Jot 2 review dropped👍 It was well worth the wait and I learned of its characteristics in much more detail than other reviews I've watched. Thx so much. 😎
Got the Sundara and balanced cable coming. Now to order my Jotunheim 2 this week. How did the gain switch affect the sound if at all? Thinking the low gain setting might buy more range on the potentiometer.
Wow! I'd better pay attention to the SPL. Clean powerful systems can blow your ears out as there isn't any distortion like occurs in cheaper components.
I just wanted to compliment you on the excellent content. Editing is top notch, and I appreciated the little details like the arrows over the B-roll when you were talking about inputs/outputs. Great work as always!
Got the Jotunheim 2 on your recommendation, it’s significantly better than my THX 789. I’m using the LCD 4 so the schiit can certainly handle insanely power demanding headphones. You’ve got a good ear, always look forward to your reviews
@@PassionforSound Wondering if it's worth the upgrade. I have the baby stack from Shiit (Modi+, Magni+) powering my LCD-XC. If running balanced is the way to go, I am thinking of the Jot 2 with DAC for that. I'd appreciate any advice.
You'll notice a nice lift in quality using the Jot 2. You could definitely start by upgrading the Magni to the Jot 2 and then change the DAC later. In the long run, the Bifrost 2 and Jotunheim 2 is some of the best value for money around
Thanks Brocco, you da man! 10kSubs! Hopefully the next 10-15k come event faster as you deserve it! Almost seems like they should have put 3 gain settings on this amp. But still for $399 it's a great buy. On Nexus and Continuity. Nexus is their tech of converting SE/BAL (or vise versa) which seems to have little/no difference compared to how they did it in some of their older amps. Continuity is how they make their class AB circuit behave more like Class A. Usually their continuity amps are decently biased into class A (500mW for Asgard3 or 10W for the Aegir speaker amp), but because of the amount of parts that go into a full balanced amp like Jot2 they had to do it slightly differently so in the Jot2 it's called "Continuity S" and has 100mW class A bias.
Thanks Snow and good luck in the draw! Thanks for the info about Nexus and Continuity. I decided to skip over it in the name of keeping the video a reasonable length. I'll pin your comment for those who want to know more.
10kSubs - Man, only found you recently but it's been absolutely refreshing seeing your reviews in this space. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing the growth.
10kSubs is a milestone I'm glad your channel reached, because it seems we like similar sound signatures. Looking forward to seeing more reviews from you.
Thanks Samuel! I think the Jot 2 is a huge upgrade over both (particularly the SP200). The sound is so much more dynamic and 3-dimensional. The only argument I can see for the 789 vs the Jot 2 is for IEM users.
Thanks for this great and articulate review. I recently purchased the Jot 2 along with the Modius, having bumped up from the Heresy/Modi stack. My foray into balanced. The Jot 2/Modius sound great with my Arya Stealth, which at last seem to have come to life. Cheers.
Had a Topping A90D w/ an SML M200 dac, I just wasn't a fan of that topping sound, so I sent those back and looking to invest in the Schiit Jot 2 and Schiit Modius as a nice little stack. Should be more than enough power to drive my cans. Great in depth review as always!
love your unbiased reviews, and I hope you get your 10ksubs soon! keep it up! Edit: also you fan base for supporting these type of reviews!!!! almost forgot
Hello and thanks for the great video! It was one of the reasons I bought the Jot 2. I just recently bought some IEMs and I have to say that my Jot 2 unfortunately has quite a lot of hiss with them. What could be the issue? Thanks and cheers from Berlin!
The Jot 2 is unfortunately just not great with IEMs ☹️ because it's very powerful and has a relatively high noise floor. It's great for headphones, but sadly, IEMs are too sensitive You could get something like an iFi IEMatch to help or grab a different amp like a Magni+ - whichever works for you better
Even after two years, this review is still very interesting. Right now in April '23 I'm almost sold on the Jot 2 for my venerable HiFiMan HE-6 headphones, in my desktop system with powered Hedd monitors. Here's my questions: (1) is the HE-6 one of those warmish headphones you are cautioning people about when paired with Jot 2? (2) the Burson Soloist - enough power to cope with HE-6 power demands of 83.5 Sensitivity and 50 ohms Impedance? Thx.
In this video you stated that discrete amps typically are more 3 dimensional in presentation than op amps. But then there's the Burson Soloist 3z. It's op amp, right? So the soloist 3x is an exception to the rule? My main HP amp now is the Topping A90 paired up with a Schiit Yggdrasil A2. My 3 best headphones are Audeze LCD-XC and LCD-4, and Sennheiser HD800S. I feel the A90 pairs well with all 3, but if there's an amplifier thats even more 3 dimensional without losing anything else, I'd like to know what some good options might be. BTW- thanks for the great reviews!
Hi Mark, the Soloist is a bit of a trickster because Burson op-amps are actually discrete (which is why they're so big). So the Soloist is a fully discrete amp too and it's definitely what is recommend as a clear and signficant upgrade from the A90. That plus the Yggy should have you in audio heaven
10kSubs congratulations and good luck, fantastic review, I'm glad you described how it sounds paired with Sundara because I'm looking for an amp to drive it.
10kSubs is still far from what this channel deserves. Whenever I want to check out a product, you are one of the very first reviewers I check out if it is within your gear span. thanks for all your great content!
@@PassionforSound One thing that really bugs me is that Schiit does not seem to have inventory to sell but they keep throwing their gear around to reviewers (not the case here, I know) to have us all craving for something we cannot just find on sale. It's so frustrating... Thank you, again.
Not sure how it works in all parts of the world, but it could be that it's the same single unit going to multiple people. I understand the frustration though
Thanks Jonathan. I've contacted Schiit about the Lyr 3, but stock levels are a challenge for them and it's important that they fill customer orders before sending out review samples
Congrats on reaching 10kSubs! I keep wanting to pull the trigger on a schiit product just can't seem to decide. Appreciate the review, sounds like the Jot 2 has more power than I need. ✌
Thanks Ninjastix! Good luck in the draw! It is a touch too powerful unfortunately, but a great amp for most headphones on the market unless you're a super quiet listener.
10kSubs, amazing channel and thoroughly enjoyed the video. also congratulations on the milestone! only chanced upon your channel this year but better late than never hey!
Congratulation for 10kSubs! Love the channel, love the thoughtful analysis. Really loved your recent scientific USB cable testing video. Your smart approach clearly demonstrated what is one of the hardest things in hifi to prove. iMPRESSIVE
Thank you very much. I had my eye on the Magnius until I saw your video on that unit explaining the balanced and single-ended outputs. I was very dissapointed because I was ready to pull the plug, even downloaded the manual. For an extra $200 the Jotunheim 2 seems to be the one, but I'm still researching.
10ksubs! Great review! Love your channel and appreciate your reviews! Very thorough and accurate. I have had my Jot 2 since release and agree with your review in its entirety. Mine is paired with my Bifrost 2 and Gungnir Multibit with Unison. Sounds great from both Dacs. My new favorite review channel! Thanks!
Hi, 10kSubs Congrats! I've owned the Jot 1 (with AK4490 DAC module) about a year ago and, paired with the Focal Clear, Elegia and ZMF Eikon, I was not blown away... I am now looking for a analog and 3D sounding stack for my current headphones (Focal Utopia and ZMF Verite Closed)... Do you think the Jot 2/Bifrost 2 can be a good combo?
@@PassionforSound actually another review mentioned audiogd so I took a look at their more recent offerings around the same price and they also have physical switches. So now of course I have to check those out 🤣 you have any experience with their recent hp amps and how they compare to the schitt?
10kSubs! Enjoyed your review. Have been planning to buy Jotunheim 2 for few weeks and finally placed the order. However, still not decided on DAC. Any suggestion?
@@PassionforSound Thank you for taking the time to reply. Really appreciate it. I have considered Bifrost but, i guess, i am not ready to spend 700 USD yet. As a balanced DAC, would Modius do justice to Jot2? However, if you could provide some word of wisdom, i might shell the the money for once and all. I am a hobbyist and just getting serious into whole audiophile rabbit-hole :). Jot2 would be my first serious AMP. In past, i have been using Creative Sound Blaster G6 and Fiio Alpen 2. For headphones, i have Hifiman Sundara, HD6XX, HD58X, Fidelio X2HR, Audio Technica 50MX. I am planning to run both Sundara and HD6XX balanced with Jot 2 and already have the cables on the way.
Great review as usual Lachlan! It's my pleasure to be able to contribute to the channel. Your reviews have always been informative and have helped me in my buying decision. So, it's the least I can do :) All the best with reaching 10kSubs! I'm sure it's a just matter of time. I may have missed it in video. Which DAC did you use for comparison among diff amps?
Thanks Hadi! I used the TT2 as my DAC for all comparisons. I tend to always do comparisons with the best possible sources I can use as it allows me to hear the maximum possible performance of the devices in question.
@@PassionforSound Thanks! I found Jot2 to be too warm for my U12t. I think that's because I'm using Ares 2 (unfortunately my only balanced dac at the moment) that's also on the warm side. It sounds great on HD800s though.
Interesting! The U12t are quite punchy in the bass so that makes sense and I can imagine the Ares II / Jot 2 combo being a bit too much of a good thing at times. I'll see if I can lend you the Bifrost 2 once I finish with the Burson Composer review
Hi James, good luck in the draw! I've already chatted to Burson and will definitely get my hands on the Funk at some point. I've got the Composer here right now so probably once I send that back.
Thank you for the thought, but Schiit don't do affiliate links. Just tell them I sent you if you happen to email them so they know it's worth continuing to send me review units. 🙂
@@PassionforSound, actually, I'm just about to email Schiit, and when I do, I'll ABSOLUTELY give your channel a mention, Lachlan! Incidentally, now that I've done a little more research, it seems that the Ragnarok 2 would suit the Modhouse headphones even better (and I really want a remote control option, for those tracks that unexpectantly blast my ears).
@@PassionforSound, I have but I want an amplifier that can comfortably handle the Tungsten headphones, and the Mjolnir's power is but a fraction of the Ragnarok. Also, class A amps run too hot for those residing in the tropics, as do I. Also, I can use the Ragnarok to power my Bowers & Wilkins bookshelf speakers that are currently powered by an old Technics amplifier.
Ive had one for a month. I picked it up with the multibit dac and it does a great job with the balanced outputs. The one thing that I would note is the floor noise that is present in the single output, compared to the balanced output. That said, in my honest opinion it does feel like it was meant more for the balanced output. I managed to wait for the jot 2 after eying the original for 4 years. And I am very pleased with the performance.
Hi Rafael, thanks for sharing your experiences. I didn't notice the noise floor in SE, but I also wasn't really looking for it. What sorts of headphones do you notice it with? Good thing you waited for the Jot 2 - it's SO much better than the original!
Re-visiting this review after a year or so after watching (and acquiring the Jot2) and I’d say you’re pretty spot on and this is by far the most thorough review of the Jot2 I’ve seen on RUclips. I own the Jot2 and the Soloist and as much as I love the Soloist for its refined approach to detail and wider staging, I find myself listening w/the Jot2 more just due to the more engaging old school vibe. It really wakes up headphones like Clear MG and Ananda while the Soloist tends to take the Arya to its full potential when I need extreme detail and expansive soundstage. With the Jot2, I tend to forget about the gear and just enjoy my music more. And it pairs perfectly w/the Bifrost 2. Although the Soloist is a wonderful pairing there too. Obviously I’m biased here but I don’t think you can do much better at or below $1k for power than either of these headphone amps.
I'm so glad you posted this @darthdurkelthewise320. I currently own the Arya stealth magnet edition paired with the Burson soloist and also have an OG Schiit Magni from like 10 years ago. I thought I was crazy for preferring the sound from the Magni vs. the Burson for most of my listening sessions. The Burson is more detailed and does provide a wider soundstage, but there is something about the Schiit punch and low end that I just find more engaging on the Arya. After rewatching this video trying to recall what @PassionforSound had to say comparing the two I used his recommended track and definitely felt the same as far as the Soloist providing a more fleshed out cello sound vs the Magni. However, I think for the majority of music I tend to listen to the Schiit just provides the more exciting listen.
I have a similar experience as well, except it was between the jot2 and the aune s9c pro. Ultimately the jot2 was just a bit more engaging overall, even though the s9c had a wider soundstage with better details retrieval. The jot2 was not that far behind overall in technicalities, and just had that extra engagement, while the s9c would eventually feel a little restrained in that area.
Great review! I was looking into this for my Sennheiser 58x but then am a bit hesitant after your comment of them being paired together. I was wondering if you were able to test out if that combination is a bit too much as you thought or heard about it from others? If so, do you have any other recommendations for an amp for the 58x - preferably balanced (with pre-amp) if I were to upgrade my headphones later on. Thanks in advance
I didn't get to try them together, but I'd personally be carefully l careful about buying an amp to suit those headphones specifically because of you do upgrade later, it might not suit what you move to. The HD58X have a fairly unique sound. My comments about the Jot 2 and HD58X were based on the fact that I'm personally not a fan of the 58X, but if you like them, the Jot 2 should be fine and is a great amp. Two other options to consider are the Geshelli Labs E2 (cheaper, but also balanced) and the Singxer SA-1 which has two output impedance modes and may slightly enhance the 58X sound
@@PassionforSound Thank you so much for your quick reply and for the great advice! will look into these options and watch your reviews for the mentioned. I just watched your SMSL HO200 and Topping A90 reviews as well. Considering those now as well.
Hey Lachlan. Newbie question here. The issue with power being too much for efficient headphones could be solved by listening trough rcas connection plus SE out instead of xlr's in/out ? Also, the modius dac would pair well with this amp ? Thank you.
Hi. The Modius would do really well and (I think) using RCAs from the Modius will result in lower input power (2V rather than 4V I think) so that should help. Good idea!
Another awesome review mate! I have an A3 for use with Focal Clears and MrSpeakers Ether (Original Red) and ordered a Jot 2 with the thought of selling the A3 if the sonic quality is more preferred. You mentioned you have used the Clears on balanced connect- eager to hear if it is better on balanced VS SE output from your perspective given balanced has a 6db difference I read (less volume turn)? I currently use Clears on A3 (SE) and 12 o'clock low gain/9 o'clock high gain and volume is pretty close to max tolerance.
Hi E Ngo, the Jot 2 is slightly better from the balanced output IMO, but it's close enough to be preferential rather than definitively better/worse between the SE and balanced outs. I think you'll be OK with the Jot 2 in terms of having sufficient volume range to work with. I'm pretty similar to you with the Asgard 3 (perhaps even staying a bit lower), but I had no issues with usability on the Jot 2 balanced output even if there was still plenty of volume range available
I see soloist right behind you, You still think its the End game for you? How much you are enjoying them? I would really love to compare Jotunheim 2 with singxer sa1 amp considering to get that but really confused as can't audition it. Also FYI magnius isn't true balanced inside it only has xlr ports.
Hi Onkar, I've actually got the SA-1 review coming out very soon and it includes comparisons with both the Jot 2 and Soloist 3. To answer your question though, the Soloist is still currently the best standalone headphone amp and pre-amp that I've heard with only the TT2 having better amp capabilities, but it can only work with its own internal DAC.
Hi Matt, I don't know the Marantz sound well enough to say. I can only describe it as punchy, engaging and fun. There's a tiny lack of resolution as a result, but it's worth it for the fun and excitement it brings to the music.
Hello. I'd like to ask, I have Burson Playmate Everest config, is this any better? Or just different? And when feeding the amp with xlr, does it output to rca please? Thank you!
Hi Tibor, I can't compare to the Playmate because I haven't heard it - sorry! I do think the Jot 2 might outperform it based on my experience with the Fun though. Both outputs from the Jot 2 work with either input.
10kSubs. This is the review I’ve been waiting for since the Jotunheim 2 was released! Great vid, keep the top notch content coming. Maybe do the new Burson Playmate 2?
Thanks Lucas and good luck in the draw! I haven't looked into the Playmate, but have the Composer here now and Funk planned for review later. No reason I can't chat to Burson about the Playmate...
Thank you so much for this review! I've been trying to figure out for a while now if I should get the Jot 2 or the Soloist, and your description of the differences between them has helped me understand which one best suits my preferences 🙂
@@PassionforSound I'm going to go for the Soloist. I really value texture, detail, and a "lifelike" presentation. Your description of the cello in The People And I really helped convey the subtle differences between the two amps. I'm sure the differences are small, but I don't mind paying more since I've found that small differences can have a larger impact the longer you own a product.
@Passion for Sound I heard in the review that you tried the Focal Clears. I am currently looking for a desktop dac/amp that pairs well with it. Are there any suggestions as to which dac/amp I should take a look at, or is the Jotunheim 2 good enough? Ideally it is in the similar price range of the Jotuneim.
Clears scale really well so you can take them all the way to endgame gear, but I'd personally be very happy with them plus a Jot 2. I'd probably only go for something like the Soloist 3X as the next step up and that's a big price increase
10kSubs ... Liking the intro it's well put together! This amp in terms of power output might be a good entry level option for the HE6 SEv2, Susvara, and 1266 Phi TC where you want 4-6 watts @ 50 ohms. Those would likely take advantage of the power without the channel imbalance but not sure this will have the technical capabilities to maximize those headphones. Also surprised that the Soloist didn't outperfoorm by a Jot2 by a larger amount. Possibly doing some op-amp rolling in the Soloist would help (classic, vivid, etc..).
Hi Ace, I agree that the power output is definitely better suited to those more demanding headphones, but it's also not quite at the level of resolution I'd want for flagship cans. The Soloist is at its very best with the Vivids (stock setup and how I've kept it), but the Jot 2 really is outstanding. It doesn't match the resolution, but it's loads of fun whereas the Soloist keeps things a bit more demure.
It's not a major problem. The volume pot is high quality - there's just a touch too much power for things like IEMs and super-sensitive headphones. I've rarely found an analog volume control with perfect channel balance throughout so this is very normal. I would personally still by a Jot 2 if I didn't have the Soloist 3X because it's SO MUCH fun that I'd gladly deal with the slightly limited volume range.
@@PassionforSound it is a major problem, just like A90 volume pot is a joke, thin, and tiny small and unreliable potentiometer. But reviewers always trying to do-little products mistakes... Stop it please, stop it. It's really annoying and pathetic to be honest.
Great review vid, tyvm. Can you make any Solid State AMP recommendations to power the Meze Empyrean's? I'd like to stick to a budget between $300-600 but would prefer not to exceed more than $1000. I was considering the Topping A90 and Jotunheim 2 but any recommendations since you have experience w/ the Empyrean's would be very helpful.
Just saw the Burson Soloist 3XP in your recommended AMP's. It's a little over my max budget but if that would give me a better sound out of the Empyrean's I guess I could save a bit more, lol but plz feel free to give your 2 cents. tyvm
Hi Aztek, no it's thankfully much more open and dynamic sounding. I really disliked the original Jotunheim, but they've fixed that problem this time around.
@@PassionforSound hi Lachlan, may i get your thoughts on the soloist 3x vs the topping A90. I am looking for an ultimate resolution and transparancy HP amp. I already have a milo amp that gives me plenty of musicality and richness. I would like to buy one for critic listening now. My DAC is the bifrost 2. Thank you.
Hi Surya, it's not even close. The Soloist 3X is miles ahead of the A90. I'm still trying to find a better amp than the Soloist (other than the Hugo TT2 internal amp) - it's that good. I'm not saying there isn't something better out there, but for the price the Soloist is VERY hard to beat.
@@PassionforSound hi lachlan, thanks for the reply. I can certainly put the a90 out of mind in this case. The soloist is within my budget. Since i am looking for the ultimate transparent amp, if i may throw in another amp that you and also others have reviewed very favourably. Which is the sparkos lab aries...how does the sparkos and soloist compare in terms of resolution, translarency and dynamics. In other words, if budget wasn't a problem and you could pick only one of the two for critical listening which would it be? And why?. I apologise for picking your thoughts on this. I would like to make this purchase with absolute certainty, that i buy the best for transparency.
All good, Surya. The Aries is an excellent amp and crazy with its detail retrieval and resolution, but it lacked a bit for me in soundstage and general realism when compared to the Soloist. It's like it's too clean and comes across a bit sterile whereas the Soloist produces a very musical and engaging presentation while still being outstanding for transparency and resolution.
I'd love to see a review of the Fiio Q3 from you as I genuinely like the way you examine things, especially portable dac/amps. The Fiio Q3 is THX AAA certified so I'm curious about its actual sound quality.
Hi Cosmos, FiiO gear has been a little tricky for me to get my hands on, but I'll see what I can arrange... What I can say is that the THX AAA tech isn't all it's cracked up to be. It measures really well and sounds very clean, but the feedback (feed-forward) process seems to flatten out the soundstage and suck some of the 'magic' out of the music, and I'm not talking about beneficial distortion because I've heard other non-THX gear that measures equally as well, but has a bit more life to it (like the Geshelli Erish). Still, I haven't heard the Q3 so it might be different - I'll see what I can do...
@@PassionforSound Again, really appreciate your descriptive choice of words that can help me "visualize" how things sound. What's more is that you've saved me from a rabbit hole of paying too much attention on certifications like THX AAA and the like. Looking forward to when you've covered enough products to make a tierlist of sorts regarding audio gears.
Glad I could help. I often get asked about tier lists, but I'm really hesitant to go down that path because so much of it depends on what you use each piece of gear with, what your personal tastes are, etc. Still, I guess I can share it from my personal perspective... I'll see if I can come up with something in the future.
Schiit Jotunheim 2 and HiFiMan Sundara pair up perfectly IMHO. I ran unbalanced out of my phone and laptop for a week untill the Jot 2 arrived. Running unbalanced through the Jot was better than the phone/PC, but balanced is way better. Balanced: Modius > Freya S > Jotunheim 2 > Sescom 15' 4XLR extension cable > Surf Cable > Sundara. I'm running the Jot 12 o'clock on high gain and using the Freya remote to adjust volume. Your reviews are excellent 👍
Thanks for the review (and thanks to Brocco for making it possible)! I'd been keen on the arrival of the Jotunheim 2 for a while, so I'm happy that all the reviews I've seen have been so positive! By the way, is it just the lighting, or are those headphones next to your head a nice shade of navy blue?
My pleasure, Ruusta. I'd expect it to be an amp that continues with pretty positive reviews all around. Very little to complain about. As for the headphones, that must be lighting because I don't have any blue headphones. I'm using some cheeky colour balance tricks now to improve the look of reviews so that's probably what's going on.
The Modius is still a solid DAC for sure. There's not a great deal of real improvement in audio from one year to the next so things don't get outdated despite the constant flow of new models from some brands.
10kSubs. Another terrific review! Looks like Jason has another winner on his hands! I think in general they are selling products faster than they can make them and sorta backlogged. Nice to see a usa company making great affordable gear! Pleasure seeing your channel grow! Would you include any of the tube amps from bottlehead as being fun and novel and eventually wearing off after time? Thanks!
Hi Brandon and thanks for the kind words. Schiit are definitely on a roll at the moment which is pretty cool to see (and hear). I'd say the Bottlehead headphone amps are all solid and don't lose their charm, but for me the Crack never satisfied the upgrade itch. The S.E.X. was stronger in that regard and didn't have me wanting to upgrade and was only reluctantly sold to fund other purchases once I realised the Mainline got all my time. So I'd say overall they aren't a novelty, but the Crack's basic design and smooth sound means you might be wanting more after a while - it's like an appetizer rather than the main meal 😉
Just wondering if you’ve done a review of the Ragnarok 2? Considering it as a head phone amp and a speaker amp to my two front speakers through an amp selector to complement my Yammy surround sound Av receiver when I just want stereo. On another note, I wish I knew why we get rorted for US made gear. Hifiman Aryas.. $1600 US, often for sale for $1799AUD Schiit Rag2 integrated $1650US, $3500 AUD Makes you wonder who is getting that load of cash!
I've not yet tried a Raggy. I believe the Rag 2 is more speaker amp and less headphone amp so I've never bothered to try and get one. As for getting rorted, I believe some of that might be a result of the distributor knowing they have a local monopoly (unless people order direct from Schiit). There is also the issue of import duties, etc. My Folkvangr cost $300+ to get through customs!
First, thanks for all the great, in-depth and descriptive reviews. I think your reviews are the best. I'm sure I will get the Hifiman HE6se v2 very soon. I understand that is a very difficult headphone to drive. Is the Jot2 enough power for it and what are a couple nice but, not insanely expensive dac options to pair with it other than the Bifrost2? Thanks in advance for your response.
So glad you're enjoying the content, Mike! I'm pretty sure the Jot 2 has the guts for the HE6SE, but I've never tried them together. It has 4W into 50 ohms so I'd be shocked if it didn't handle them with ease. As for DACs, there are lots of great options around. The new SMSL DO300 is excellent (review coming this weekend) and the EverSolo DAC-Z8 is one of my favourites under $1,000 (other than Bifrost 2)
The EverSolo is lovely, but it's limited a bit by using a regular chip-based design (ESS, AKM, etc.) Schiit's Multibit filter helps provide better depth and layering IMO
Excuse me I'm just curious. When you reviewed these amps did you plug them directly into your pc or did you use a dac? I'm about to buy the jotunhiem 2 but I only have a modi 3E as a dac until I can afford the bifrost 2. Will the modi 3E dac bottleneck my jotunhiem 2 or will it be good enough until I can afford my bifrost 2?
Hi Steven, I was using a DAC for all tests (I can't recall which one). The Modi 3E will be fine initially, but you'll definitely hear some nice improvements (IMO) when you get the Bifrost 2
@@PassionforSound can I ask you a different question. If you were upgrading a magni hersey and modi 3E to the bifrost 2 and the jotunhiem 2, which part would you upgrade first? The dac or the amp?
That's a tough one and it probably won't make much difference as both will be a good initial upgrade, but both will also be limited slightly by the other unit that isn't upgraded. I'd probably swap the amp first though because I think it will be the bigger initial jump
I have the sundara and it pairs extremely well with the jotunheim 2/bifrost 2 combo pairing. Are there any other specific headphones in the $500-$1000 range that would pair excellently with this combo? Looking for something that is has a bit more presence and texture in the bass and slightly thicker mids. Was thinking of the Edition XS, Ananda, LCD-2C, etc. Really looking for headphones to bring out the best in jazz, electronica and instrumental music.
I haven't tried the LCD-2C, but the Ananda might fit the bill. Not sure about the XS because it has a brighter top end which offsets the bass extension (which is also very flat). I'd also consider the HarmonicDyne G200 which I'll be reviewing soon and also the Sivga SV023 which is coming even sooner.
I posted elsewhere that you won’t find a better measuring amp than the topping. But I don’t get moved by measurements, I get moved by good sound. Usually, Schiit products measure avg or poor, but they sound great
Hi Mobin, I'd choose the Jot 2 everytime unless you want to drive IEMs. The Jot 2 is so much more njoyable to listen to and has a much better sense of depth to its sound.
10kSubs congrats! I Wonder if it pairs well with HD800S given it's slightly warmer smoother nature to be able to tame it's bright treble a little Some say the Asgard 3 is even warmer than the Jot 2, perhaps it might offer even better synergy (I find the HD800S need smooth warm SS, or. a tube amp, to control it's lean nature)
I agree about the HD800S, Emil. I thought the Jot 2 was a better match than the Asgard 3 because the Jot 2 has such a great presence/weight in its bass.
I'd personally still go for the Bifrost 2 and the Jotunheim 2, but you could always go for something like the SMSL DO200 which won't create the depth of the Bifrost 2's soundstage, but is a great DAC.
That's tubular man 😁
Since my ears only reach 10k now, it's all good. I can always buy a Loki if I want more sizzle. Thx for the update.
How would you rate THX AAA 789 with Sundara compared to Jot2 with Sundara?
@@satyamgupta562 I happen to own THX789 too but I cannot specifically comment on Sundara pairing.
THX789 is alot more neutral bright, sounstage wise its flat with lack sense of depth, dynamically less engaging, slightly less detailed, less punchy.
Imo, thx 789 is a better pairing for warm headphones instead of jot
Hi Satyam, I'd take the Jot 2 with the Sundaras every single time. It's more 3-dimensional, more dynamic and just a better listening experience
@@broccolee8250
It’s crazy how fast op-amps amplifiers actually got better and flooded the market after the 789 and heresy.
Congrats for the 10K! Really happy to see the channel grow.
Thanks Samuel! Good luck in the draw!
Glad to see the channel growing as much as it has
Thanks Josh!
Ordered mine as a 2021 gift to myself, 6 week backlog on the phono stage, but after the last couple weeks of listening, spectacular purchase. Great work on the 10ksubs brother, well deserved.
Thanks Brian and great choice of amp. Glad you're enjoying it! Good luck in the draw!
ive had the original jot for a few yrs now and have been wanting to upgrade for awhile and am now getting ready to do it. i literally just watched your original jot review 1 minute before this one popped up. lol awesome
lol nvrmnd. no dac in the review is a bummer but ultimately doesnt effect my decision. There still ISNT a digital IN on this thing! i wasnt happy with the sound of the original just like you, but the final killer for me was when i purchased a cd transport and then realized i cant even use it with the jot bc theres no digital IN. and they left it like that on the jot 2...unreal
i did really like a cpl other of your vids on the chords and rme. anyway, i subbed.
So glad I could help and that it was worth the wait! 🙂🙂
Got the Sundara and balanced cable coming. Now to order my Jotunheim 2 this week. How did the gain switch affect the sound if at all? Thinking the low gain setting might buy more range on the potentiometer.
My testing was all in low gain 😳
You'll be fine with the Sundara though 🙂 It will sound great!
Wow! I'd better pay attention to the SPL. Clean powerful systems can blow your ears out as there isn't any distortion like occurs in cheaper components.
Yes, please protect your ears. The Jot 2 does encourage a little extra volume because it's SO MUCH fun!
Congratulations on 10ksubs! All the time you out in to a review is readily apparent in all your videos. Glad I found your channel!
Thanks Hermit! Good luck in the draw
I just wanted to compliment you on the excellent content. Editing is top notch, and I appreciated the little details like the arrows over the B-roll when you were talking about inputs/outputs.
Great work as always!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for letting me know. I don't always include the arrows and the like - depends on the need 🙂
10kSubs ! congrats to making it to 10k, Enjoyed the video.
Hi Adam. Thank you and good luck in the draw!
Got the Jotunheim 2 on your recommendation, it’s significantly better than my THX 789. I’m using the LCD 4 so the schiit can certainly handle insanely power demanding headphones. You’ve got a good ear, always look forward to your reviews
Great news, Arturo! So glad you're enjoying it and that I can help you with my reviews 🙂🙂
Significantly better? I see you posted 11 months ago, interested in Jot 2 and the Singxer
Both are great options, Grady, and will be a big upgrade from the 789
@@PassionforSound Wondering if it's worth the upgrade.
Jason said they were going after the transconductance droop issue rather than 'class A'. Looks like it was successfully accomplished.
I have no idea what that one is, but maybe they fixed it based on the quality I heard from the Jot 2
Just a note to say that I had to unpin this @Snow Rang3r because I needed to post a slight correction to something I said in the video
Just dropped in after an episode of Z Reviews to catch my breath. You are like polar stars and I appreciate both approaches.
Haha. I know exactly what you mean. Thanks condor
I had a bit of a giggle watching his Auris Euterpe review the other day while I'm preparing my own. I think you'll spot some differences there too 😉
Your reviews have contributed to my purchase of 2 of my components. Best,D.
So glad I could help! 🙂
Thanks haddy for making the review possible. I’m thinking of buying this in a few months
It's a great choice!
Congratulation for 10kSubs! I have been enjoying your channel since the beginning. Thanks for all the hard work!
Thanks for coming along for the ride, Viliam! Good luck in the draw!
10kSubs - Man, only found you recently but it's been absolutely refreshing seeing your reviews in this space. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing the growth.
10kSubs! I was worried about the power level, glad I saw your review.
Glad I could help. Good luck in the draw
10kSubs is a milestone I'm glad your channel reached, because it seems we like similar sound signatures. Looking forward to seeing more reviews from you.
Thanks Aftermath! Glad you find my reviews helpful. Good luck in the draw!
Would you say this is an upgrade over a THX amp like the SMSL sp200/789? Or would it be more like a side-grade?
Btw congrats on 10k subs!
Thanks Samuel! I think the Jot 2 is a huge upgrade over both (particularly the SP200). The sound is so much more dynamic and 3-dimensional. The only argument I can see for the 789 vs the Jot 2 is for IEM users.
Man, you're almost at 10kSubs - amazing work you've done. Keep putting out great content, you will have 20k and more sooner than you expect!
Thanks Biggus! I hope so - I looked at the accounts the other day... didn't realise how much debt the channel is in 😳😳🙂🙂
Wow congrats on 10kSubs....you do a superb job, obviously a lot of effort
Thanks Paul. Yes, it takes quite a bit of work so I'm glad people like it 🙂
Thanks for this great and articulate review. I recently purchased the Jot 2 along with the Modius, having bumped up from the Heresy/Modi stack. My foray into balanced. The Jot 2/Modius sound great with my Arya Stealth, which at last seem to have come to life. Cheers.
That's great news! Glad that you took the plunge and are enjoying the results 🙂🙂
Sounds like a great plan! Glad you liked the review!
That's exactly what I plan to get.
love your unbiased reviews, and I hope you get your 10ksubs soon! keep it up! Edit: also you fan base for supporting these type of reviews!!!! almost forgot
Thanks Mike! Good luck in the draw!
It's great for headphones, but sadly, IEMs are too sensitive
You could get something like an iFi IEMatch to help or grab a different amp like a Magni+ - whichever works for you better
10kSubs Thanks Melbourne for lending this out. Great review! I picked up the Schiit Modius and Magnius and love that combo-$199 each.
That's a great stack you've got. Good luck in the draw!
Thx.
The HE-6 isn't particularly warm IIRC so both the Jot 2 or Soloist would be great. The Soloist will have plenty of power for the HE-6 too.
@@PassionforSound thanks! I've got a Soloist 3x ordered. Can't wait til it arrives.
You'll love it!
Thank you for your review. I just placed an order for the J2 🎉
Excellent! Enjoy!!
10kSubs congratulations and good luck, fantastic review, I'm glad you described how it sounds paired with Sundara because I'm looking for an amp to drive it.
Thanks Issam. If you enjoy a punchy, slightly warm sound it's great. I'd gladly recommend that exact setup.
10kSubs is still far from what this channel deserves. Whenever I want to check out a product, you are one of the very first reviewers I check out if it is within your gear span. thanks for all your great content!
Thanks so much! Sadly the draw is over now, but there'll be more giveaways soon. Thanks for your support!
10kSubs, amazing channel, I value your reviews more than most. Please continue to provide the very best content.
Hi Lee, thank you so much and good luck in the draw!
Thanks for the video. Answered all my questions.
My pleasure! So glad I could help
Really appreciate your reviews, and I would love to see you review a Schiit Lyr 3 also. Keep up the good work!
It is a touch too powerful unfortunately, but a great amp for most headphones on the market unless you're a super quiet listener.
same here, but schitt not that that good. Waiting for that eureka amp to arrive.
Have you checked out the Burson Soloist?
10kSubs, amazing channel and thoroughly enjoyed the video. also congratulations on the milestone! only chanced upon your channel this year but better late than never hey!

Congratulation for 10kSubs! Love the channel, love the thoughtful analysis. Really loved your recent scientific USB cable testing video. Your smart approach clearly demonstrated what is one of the hardest things in hifi to prove. iMPRESSIVE
Thanks so much DE! Good luck in the draw - you just snuck in
10kSubs, Congratulations its very difficult to get to that amount of subs uploading videos of hifi audio
Thanks you! It's taken some hard work and commitment, but luckily I enjoy the hobby and also the production side too. Good luck in the draw
The Jot 2 is a great amp. Be sure to check out the Geshelli A3 Pro too
Found your channel based on your review of the School Bigots. Thanks for the interesting and informative content. 10kSubs!
The School of Bigots? What am I missing?
Glad you like the content and good luck in the draw!
That will be a magnificent combo, Dominic! The Jot 2 is a totally different amp (thankfully). Good luck in the draw - you just snuck in!
Finally a headphone amp with an actual switch for preamp. Will be picking on of these up. Great work on the review as always!
Thanks Nepherim! I agree about the switch. Enjoy your Jot 2 - it's great!
@@PassionforSound actually another review mentioned audiogd so I took a look at their more recent offerings around the same price and they also have physical switches. So now of course I have to check those out 🤣 you have any experience with their recent hp amps and how they compare to the schitt?
Hi Nepherim, I haven't tried an Audio-gd for years now (I've owned 2 of their products in the past). I should look at trying some...

10kSubs!
Enjoyed your review. Have been planning to buy Jotunheim 2 for few weeks and finally placed the order. However, still not decided on DAC. Any suggestion?
Hi Satyam, I'd go for the Bifrost as it's a brilliant DAC and stacks perfectly with the Jot 2. Good luck in the draw!
The Modius will work beautifully with the Jot 2 as well so no problems at all starting there. You can always upgrade later if you feel the need. 🙂
Great review as usual Lachlan!
It's my pleasure to be able to contribute to the channel.
Your reviews have always been informative and have helped me in my buying decision.
So, it's the least I can do :)
All the best with reaching 10kSubs!
10kSubs congratulation on thuis milestone and another excellent review
Thanks dokterbc! Good luck in the draw!
10kSubs. Thanks for another great review! Any chance you might be able to review the new Burson Funk amp sometime in the near future?🤞
Hi James, good luck in the draw! I've already chatted to Burson and will definitely get my hands on the Funk at some point. I've got the Composer here right now so probably once I send that back.
I'm considering ordering one of these Jot 2s to pair with the Modhouse Tungsten. Got an affiliate link, Lachlan?
Thank you for the thought, but Schiit don't do affiliate links. Just tell them I sent you if you happen to email them so they know it's worth continuing to send me review units. 🙂
@@PassionforSound, actually, I'm just about to email Schiit, and when I do, I'll ABSOLUTELY give your channel a mention, Lachlan!
Incidentally, now that I've done a little more research, it seems that the Ragnarok 2 would suit the Modhouse headphones even better (and I really want a remote control option, for those tracks that unexpectantly blast my ears).
Thank you for the promo!
The Raggy will be a great amp, I expect. Have you looked into the Mjolnir 3?
@@PassionforSound, I have but I want an amplifier that can comfortably handle the Tungsten headphones, and the Mjolnir's power is but a fraction of the Ragnarok. Also, class A amps run too hot for those residing in the tropics, as do I.
Also, I can use the Ragnarok to power my Bowers & Wilkins bookshelf speakers that are currently powered by an old Technics amplifier.
Perfect. Sounds like Raggy all the way. Enjoy!
Just discovered this channel and subbed. Great content!
So glad you like it!
10kSubs
Great work. You have a calm voice, and your reviews are quite informative. 100kSubs soon!
Thanks akkabor. You've missed the draw unfortunately, but there'll be more soon...
Thanks for sharing your real life experiences on these two amps, DDW!
Sounds like you described a "Marantz" American type of sound on the Jotunheim2 . Would that be accurate ?
Hi Matt, I don't know the Marantz sound well enough to say. I can only describe it as punchy, engaging and fun. There's a tiny lack of resolution as a result, but it's worth it for the fun and excitement it brings to the music.
I was thinking the same thing
Have the Jotunheim 1 going tomorrow to a friends to compare it to his he bought his after watching this review of yours well-done. 10kSubs
I hope you're as impressed as I was!
10ksubs. Going to order a Jot 2 and a Modius stack in the near future! Great review!
Awesome! Enjoy your new stack and good luck in the draw
@@PassionforSound thank you!
the Funk is an interesting product, I’m keen to see your review and hear thoughts on it.
No problems. I'm looking forward to it too.
Thank you so much for this review! I've been trying to figure out for a while now if I should get the Jot 2 or the Soloist, and your description of the differences between them has helped me understand which one best suits my preferences 🙂
That's great to hear, Nathan. Which did you choose?
@@PassionforSound I'm going to go for the Soloist. I really value texture, detail, and a "lifelike" presentation. Your description of the cello in The People And I really helped convey the subtle differences between the two amps. I'm sure the differences are small, but I don't mind paying more since I've found that small differences can have a larger impact the longer you own a product.
Definitely makes a difference in the long run. You really couldn't go wrong here, but perhaps you are going a bit more right with the Soloist 😉
10ksubs. Fantastic review. Definitely interested in listening to this one.
Thanks David. It's a great amp. Good luck in the draw
Excellent work! Thank you!
My pleasure 🙂🙂
10kSubs. Thank you for the nice review. I was going to buy a Jotunheim 2 but I did not know about the volume pot problem.
@@PassionforSound it should have 3 gain levels, not 2. And stnadard, regular level, 0Db, should be the lower lever, not the medium.
It's a little over my max budget but if that would give me a better sound out of the Empyrean's I guess I could save a bit more, lol but plz feel free to give your 2 cents. tyvm
I'd definitely go for the Soloist if you can swing it. Otherwise, my next recommendation would be the Singxer SA-1 which pairs very well also.
Great review and comparison. I love the Jot 2 w/Multibit on my HD6xx .
Glad you're enjoying it. It's a brilliant amp
Glad to have been here before you reached 10kSubs! Makes me feel a little special haha.
Glad that you were here too. Thanks for the ongoing support! Good luck in the draw
Congrats on nearing the 10kSubs mark!
Thanks Sylvian! Good luck in the draw!
Man, I enjoy Schiit product. Are you familiar with the Singxer SA-1? Would love to hear your thoughts between the two.
Hi Alan, I'm familiar with it by name, but haven't heard it - need to try and get my hands on one...
The SA1 is on my radar too, but there's not enough comparison reviews out there to make an informed purchase decision on it.
I've got the SA-1 on the way, so if you're not in a hurry, stay tuned for my review with comparison to the Asgard 3 and Soloist (as a minimum)
Does the Jotumheim sound compressed like schiit’s older designs like the Lyr 2?
Hi Aztek, no it's thankfully much more open and dynamic sounding. I really disliked the original Jotunheim, but they've fixed that problem this time around.
@@PassionforSound That's awesome. Thanks!
You're most welcome! 🙂
You are my fav reviewer. Always concise and informative. Keep up the excellent work. Thank you
Thanks so much, Surya!
10ksubs wow! Great review, just need a source that you can select the voltage out like the Chord Qutest with regards to the volume issue.
Exactly! I could pull things back a bit with the TT2, but not so much with the Schiit Bifrost 2. Glad you liked the review and good luck in the draw!
Good work mate and appreciate the informative content.
Thanks Rahul!
Thanks for sharing your experiences AA!
10kSubs congrats, awesome content.
Thanks Anders! Good luck in the draw!
@@PassionforSound Ah, I was so sure...
I have a dt880 600ohm headphone that’s only single ended. Would jot 2 be an upgrade over the Asgard 3 if I only have single ended headphones?
Hi Keith, yes it is definitely an upgrade. Not a huge step, but it's better.
Is the Modius a good pairing for this amp in 2023? would this still be considered high quality today. with this review being two years old?
$1600 US, often for sale for $1799AUD
Schiit Rag2 integrated $1650US, $3500 AUD
Makes you wonder who is getting that load of cash!
Do you think the Jot 2 will pair well with the SMSL SU-9 DAC? Want to upgrade from the THX 789 but don’t want to buy a whole other DAC.
That should make a very good pair I'd say
@@PassionforSound thanks! 🙏🏻
10kSubs, thanks for the review. Congrats 👏
Thank you! Good luck in the draw
@@PassionforSound thanks for the reply. Would you pick the Bifrost 2 or Eversolo dac with the Jot 2?
Bifrost 2 every time 🙂
@@PassionforSound wow, thought you were going to say the eversolo for the stellar reviews it gets. Ok thanks, I will investigate the Bifrost 2 more.
The EverSolo is lovely, but it's limited a bit by using a regular chip-based design (ESS, AKM, etc.) Schiit's Multibit filter helps provide better depth and layering IMO
10kSubs,
🎶
I really enjoy your reviews! Congrats! 👍
Thanks Leonardo! Good luck in the draw!
I sold my Topping A90 after buying the Jot 2. Cheers
Is it so much better?
I sold my Topping A90 to buy Jotunheim 2, waiting to receive it... How is it so far for you? I hope it pairs well with my Arya
I would definitely choose the Jot 2 over the A90 every single time
I posted elsewhere that you won’t find a better measuring amp than the topping. But I don’t get moved by measurements, I get moved by good sound. Usually, Schiit products measure avg or poor, but they sound great
This is one of those cases. Not sure how it measures, but it does sound fantastic!
Should be a great pairing with the Arya, José 🙂
Thanks for great review. how these stack up against A90?
Guess what!? You won the Shanling UA1!!! Congratulations. Can you email me at passionforsound@lachlanfennen.com to arrange postal details, etc?
THX AAA 789 with a Bifrost or a neutral balanced dac with the Jotunheim 2 for something like the Sennheiser HD6XX ?
I'd personally still go for the Bifrost 2 and the Jotunheim 2, but you could always go for something like the SMSL DO200 which won't create the depth of the Bifrost 2's soundstage, but is a great DAC.
Thank you so much 🙃
