It's not about what they think,it's what the Holy Spirit is saying, who influenced what they say for sure, It's not about where one lived it's what the will and mind of God that's what ought to be done
We playing a dangerous game here, there is a difference between secular music and 'evil music' like smooth jazz is secular, sexyred pound town IS evil, inciting and glorifying sin is evil, let's be real.....
Secular music was a STRONGHOLD until I came to the conclusion that it's either God or Satan ; Heaven or hell...I chose Christ! You can't go through life with one foot in Christ and the other in the world.
@omarsornoza Agreed wholeheartedly. I had to choose. I couldn't be lukewarm any longer. I do understand that all secular music is not bad. However, I often have to consider, what is the source of this musical composition? And lastly, I know the Holy Spirit will SPEAK directly, when we ask him to reveal truth to us. I think part of the thing people struggle with, is that they know, once they ask for the truth to be revealed, they have to make a choice. Some don't want to know the truth. My prayer is that the Lord reveals the truth to all who desire to see and hear it, as well convict those who aren't ready yet.
I can't believe I'm at a stage where I cannot stomach secular music, I've never been a TV person so that's never been difficult. But music was hard but God has been faithful
@@LethaboLovesOra Same. When I rededicated my life, music was my stronghold, and rap music particularly. But like Lecrae said, back in the 80’s early 90’s, there weren’t any gospel rappers other than Toby Mac, and that didn’t grab my attention. Then there were the Gospel Gangsters and T-Bone, and there were the closest I could get to hardcore gospel, without the cursing, but still not really interested….. Then I thought, what if I continued listening to these artists, and then all of a sudden, my favorite ones got saved, then what? So my prayer became, Lord, deliver me from the music, and lead me to music that is uplifting, beneficial and can feed my spirit. And he took my desire away over time. I was lead to Lecrae and Reach Records, and everyone under that umbrella in 2012, and I haven like back since. I can’t STAND to hear today’s music, rap or r&b! God and CHH changed my life…..
I listen to Bible Rap by Bryson, Tyson James and Chris Chris (Who Yo God Is?) all the time now! :-) God told me to stop to listen to music that glorifies sin.
We just had Priscilla Shirer on here and she said something so profound that will forever be etched in my head. “For many Christians the question is how close can I get to sin without crossing the line, but for the disciple it’s how close can I get to Jesus”. Something may not be inherently sin but is it elevating me? There are some that are called to the dark places and of course we need to know how to strategize and operate to get other folks into the kingdom without compromising ourselves. Not to mention we do have proof that A LOT of mainstream IS EVIL. So why not just save yourself the trouble of things sticking to you and just not listen. Overall this was a good listen and it’s ok to agree to disagree. I believe that as we grow with God, He will convict us of things and we will want to get rid of it.
At the end of the day, it’s really all about discernment, because not all secular music is bad, everyone’s wired differently and everyone’s walk don’t have to be the same, it really comes down to what artists you listen to, how their songs make you feel and your reason for why you listen to them, nobody should be judging each other for what they listen to if it ain’t hurting anybody or themselves but at the same time, we definitely should be mindful of WHAT and WHO we listen to
Well I’d argue that some music is harmful. And we know that music can influence a culture. So music promoting not only sin by Christian’s standards, but music that promotes violence and sexual exploitation, yeah I think that’s harmful for all of us.
I always maintained the mindset that as long as it doesn’t drive you to sin or tempt you to do certain things, you can listen to whatever music you like. Obviously some people receive and react to stuff differently. I do have boundaries myself as I’m not out here listening to artists like Sexxy Red
For me most secular music has lyrics that doesn’t need to enter my ears as a person who trying my best to strve for holiness. And two this music triggers me because when I was living in sin secular music had an effect on me in different ways
I completely agree. I fell short many times because I listened to it and the spirits attached to those songs influenced me to do unholy things. I gotta get back on track cuz Christ is coming back soon.
This has got to be one of the most redemptive perspectives on music I've ever heard! 😭 Thank you, Jesus, that you're redeeming music and culture for your glory!
i might be a white boy but i grew up broke, too. i was just into NAS as much as i loved Nirvana growing up. I also grew up Christian and lost my faith around the age of 17. came back to Christ in 2019 after years of being a H and crack addict. i'm 40, now. been clean since 2013 or else i would be dead (and probably in hell. i don't think i was a "real" Christian who understood what it meant to be one until 2019). I didn't come back to Christ right after i got clean but I know now that Jesus saved my life from addiction. it was quite a journey before i finally asked Christ to be my Savior and the God of my entire life again. that being said, i still listen to some secular music and i listen to a lot of Christian music, as well. i still live in the hood. most of my old homies are dead now or they cleaned up. most of them are gone, though. it's sad. some secular music is cathartic for me because i have seen and been a part of some extremely dismal situations and periods in my life. i got PTSD from some of the stuff i've seen from my drug years. i've seen child and spousal ab***. i've seen the depths of despair and poverty. i've seen people lose their lives and others take their own. these days, i repent daily, pray for wisdom and descernment and the will to follow His wisdom and descernment. this world can be a very dark place and i know a lot of you out there have experienced similar stuff but a lot of other people do not understand how bad things can really get. music i will NOT listen to these days, though, is hedonistic, satanic garbage. there's a lot of that out there, unfortunately, and it is getting far worse every day it seems. especially in hip-hop. pray for CONVICTION daily. it has helped me remarkably in my own life. it's not fun being convicted and heeding that conviction but it is important to ask God to keep you in check. God bless, y'all. 🙏❤
Been following you for years... from the very start and I can testify that you have been consistent... I still hear you say the same things you used to say... Thanks for staying the course.
Since 2023 I’ve been on a journey with secular music. What started out as fasting from it for a month turned into a year plus and the benefits are revolutionary for me. I never really listened to anything too ‘crazy’ but when I tried to get back into secular music, songs about love, life etc nothing ‘sinful’ everytime the next day I always felt off. I couldn’t explain until God reminded me of when I stopped drinking sodas for like a year and when I had my first soda it wasn’t as enjoyable, my body had been so used to water it’s like it rejected the soda. And that’s what I believe is happening with my music. Don’t get me wrong it’s the HARDEST thing I have done and doing but I know this sacrifice is worth it. God bless everyone on this journey just keep going
The lyrics and the intention of the song. The artist’s heart position directly affects the songs he makes. So just be cautious. I personally don’t listen to secular music.
@Spicy_Sweet_Chili_Doritos 👋🏽 I understand your personal stance. However there's even what is called Christian songs that the lyrics don't really speak of CHRIST that uses pronouns that doesn't give any real distinction between who it is.
It’s ALWAYS important no matter how mature you are to watch your ear gates and eye gates. Content (music, movies, etc are full of seeds that get planted and when they take root, they produce fruit. Holy Spirit brings conviction to tell you what’s okay and what’s not. There’s only but so much secular music and content I can take part in without it causing the wrong seeds to come up in my life.
The beautiful thing about Christian music is that there are just as many "sounds" to satisfy the soul. You have to be "listening" in order to hear. I have young adult daughter and a young son plus grandchildren so I'm aware of the secular music that's out now, however none of that is on my playlist. I know enough to be aware.
Thank you!! I have made that comment on here too! He can and will help you find a music that fits your style. I’m a living witness…it’s when we SEEK Him first! ☝🏽☝🏽🙏🏽✝️💪🏽
Good job. I gave up secular music in 2010 when I was 18. I used to make secular music when I was in a rap group called CC Boyz. I used to rap and sing secular. I stopped listening to secular music and I stopped making it. 2010 I turned to Christian music. Lecrae, Dee-1 and The Cross Movement are the main ones I was first introduced to Christian rap.
@@ezradavid5877who are you to say what god wants from him? God wants something specific from all of us, who are you to say that god wants something from @TheMesij, you don’t know.
I think that as Believers, we need to be careful trying to make a case for our sin. Then we become a stumbling block for others. Especially with the kind of influence God has blessed Lecrae with. Secular music has a disastrous influence over American culture. Drugs, killing, hyper sexual behavior, desensitization, imaginative living, & outright witchcraft is being preached through the dark secular music platform. It is not of God. The Bible teaches us to abstain from the appearance of evil Thessalonians 5:22. James 4:4 teaches that to be friends with the world is to be Gods enemy. We all struggle with something but don’t call sin good or okay just because you struggle with it. We must call a sin a sin even if we struggle with that sin. This was a long commentary on why those that struggle to let go of secularism should feel good about it. I love this brother and appreciate all he has done to create space for hip hop artists who want to serve God with their talents but please remember, God is the Creator of all things. The devil is emulating & perverting. Stop preaching the other way around.
It’s not that , but not all secular music is evil ! Miss Mary Mack is secular but is that evil ? A lot of Christian’s become so heavenly minded and can’t impact the environment around them .
What makes a song a secular song is the lyrics not the instrumental. And what's makes a song a gospel song is the lyrics not the instrumental. Music is music but the lyrics is the message in that music. I am a gospel trapper because I speak about Jesus on the trap beats.
I was highly critical of you Lecrae ( some of it was just) but this podcast has restored a lot of respect of your perspective. I’m thankful you for opening up in this space . Much love!
John 17:14-16 “Christians are not of the world, but they are in the world. Christians should not share in the values and beliefs of the unbelieving world, but instead follow Christ's word.”
Secular music has been an ongoing struggle and influences me to think /act differently and become more sinful. It influences us! although I still catch myself listening to it sometimes especially when I work out ultimately I choose God🩷thank you for this video
Lecrae, Lecrae, Lecrae. This is powerful! The reminder that “the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof”(Psalm 24:1) is so needed. And your point about studying the greats who may not even be Christian is spot on-sometimes we forget that even though they may not be saved, the gifts and talents they have still come from God. Whether they acknowledge Him or not, their work can still glorify Him. Honestly, sometimes I even hear the Gospel in “secular” music. I've heard it in MJ’s songs, and in Kendrick Lamar’s music, you can see a biblical thread of fall and redemption running through his lyrics. It's amazing how God’s truth can show up in unexpected places. Thank you for always speaking truth and pushing us to see things from a Kingdom perspective
Most solid point of view, I was fully immersed in this video and i hope to be using the wisdom you shared in a way that positively influences me and pleases God
Man!!! This Is Necessary!!! I had to tap in as soon as I seen the reel of this video I love the way you broke this topic down I been in between secular hip hop and Christian hip hop lately and I find myself leaning & listening more nowadays towards christian hip hop more the messages just have more of an impact on my spirit as of lately I feel like my mind is being transformed through Christian Rap Thank you my brother in christ I needed to hear this today all the way from Houston, Texas.
If you’re rapping, it’s pretty hard to not check in on the industry at large. You just gotta be really careful not to let it influence you the wrong ways.
Praise God Almighty and our Lord Jesus Christ!! Man bro, this is by far one of your best conversations. Thank you. To answer your question, these days I don't listen to secular music. We have so many options in the faith music it's easier than back in the day. 116 music really helped leave secular hip-hop/rap.
Plot twist: not all Christian music is biblically sound or theologically accurate. Do we keep listening to it anyway? The Bible never said Secular vs Christian, but Good vs Evil. Discernment is knowing the difference.
this! there's PLENTY of "secular" music that's completely void of vulgarity. Just about love and or/positivity. Some things are just beats from producers that people like to listen to. We've made it easy to call our preferences clean and others unclean.
I am not a Christian and Kendrick's mention showed me your music. I really appreciate and love your message and hope others can find the good in your message.
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8
John 17:14-16 “Christians are not of the world, but they are in the world. Christians should not share in the values and beliefs of the unbelieving world, but instead follow Christ's word.”
21 clip at 0:16 is a CLEAR operation of the spirit of doubt, a sin! Psalm 50:15 God made promises to us and wont go back on the word! Believing in Jesus and not obeying his word is exactly what satan does himself. No one can serve two masters - Matthew 6:24 Cut off secular music (satan) or Cut Off God ? Romans 2:12 explains that people are held accountable to God's Word to whatever extent they understand it. “All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.” In other words, the more you know, the greater your level of accountability so now that you know this will you continue to do as you wish or Gods will. Do not twist the word for your fleshly desires if its hard to turn away from it then its the work of the enemy (flesh desire)
I’ve got to say, this is one of the most profound and intellectual looks at secular music I’ve ever heard. Thank you for sharing your insights, wisdom, and knowledge on the subject Lecrae. Keep lifting us all up through the power, of your music. Amen.
Well I don't know for sure but I assume music is more of a spiritual block also I will say this the same way not all secular music is bad not all secular movies are bad
Music is *much* more influential to shaping culture than movies _(in our country)_ . When we watch movies, none of us think that the actors are actually *LIVING* what we’re watching, so we’re less influenced to live that out. In hip-hop culture, authenticity is esteemed *highly* , so people are assumed to *LIVE* what they talk about. In that sense, it becomes much more influential and shapes the social norms of society and the way that many people think. In that regard, it can be much more dangerous, so it's talked about more.
One word. Hypocrisy. The same people that hate on Christians who listen to secular music are the same people who watch secular shows and movies with cursing, killing, and sexual content. Maybe 1% of Christians truly make an effort to block out all secular content. Also, to say music is more spiritual as a statement of why they take music more seriously than other forms of art; well that may be a stretch cause if you know the history of Hollywood and understand that the CIA is heavily involved, you will know the power that film and TV hold over people’s minds.
@ashtonrobinson6642 understand that WE live in the West, and we're distracted with these questions INSTEAD OF growing in our walk for Christ. I know why I asked.......the question is DO YOU understand why secular music is a topic when we're to SEPARATED from it? Ever heard of SANCTIFICATION??
Yes! I grew up on Michael Jackson, Madonna, Earth Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Sugarhill Gang, etc. Funk was my first love in music. I never heard anything like that in Christian Music until Kirk Franklin’s “Looking For You.”
The question to answer should not be “have you ever listened to it?” Or even “do you give it a listen?” But rather it should be “are you rocking with it and consuming it daily?”
I'm a Christian, I LOVE jesus. I'm al also a Gigantic hiphop head. I love 2pac, I love wu-tang, I am a massive vinnie paz fan, DMX changed my life. I listen for the skill, I listen for the technique, I listen for the craft. I can vehemently disagree with what an artist is saying while appreciating the craftsmanship. Take the gems, leave the dirt. At the same time, if it's not for you, it's not for you. Everyone is in a different place. We need to respect that.
I see what he's talking about. We gotta be discerning though when choosing from which secular songs we choose to listen to. Cause like television or movies. Not all are evil but not all are editing as well. Some song movies shows are weights in our lives that we gotta let go from..
When I first heard your music, it inspired me. I had never felt close to god in that way. The 116 movement was an open door and then you emerged with a passion for Christ I had never seen before. Then the media and professional Christians started showcasing you as a contradiction to faith and how a Christian should be and I was conflicted. But then I started seeking God about your message and your faith and this video help confirmed what I found. Christianity has helped create a divide that Jesus Christ lived and died to get rid of. We live in a secular world and it is our faith and walk in Christ that separates us. Christianity will have people believe that its morality, good deeds, and traditions that make you a good Christian, but it is our belief in him and that he died and rose for ALL people. Christ went TO the people and showed them the way to salvation while Christianity treats salvation like a club with limited access to those who are deemed worthy. Thank you for your transparency and your testimony.
Thank you, Lecrae, for giving your perspective on Christian Rap and secular Rap, the industry and how we as Christ followers must learn to see and know the difference from God's wisdom. It gave me a lot of food for thought. I have loved music of all types since I was a kid in the Seventies, and gave my life to Christ, first at 10 yrs old, then at 14 yrs. I see both sides, both positive and negative of both industries. Was a Recording arts major in College who minored in music and industry has changed in technology, but not in the way of how humans take advantage of other humans with musical gifts. But I digress. I appreciate your take on it.
I love it ❤Keep it real !! God uses everything we’ve been though…. Meeting people were they are! Your music has definitely impacted my self and family. Raising kids in this era !!! Let me tell you definitely reached us we’re we were! To God be the glory
Dropping gem after gem in this one 💎 I was reminded of the song “No Grease” by Swoope where he says “My alma mater was taught by Marshall Mathers And Sean Professor Carter and Kanye West for starters And Tribe Called Quest, and Common, and Nas, André 3000 Three stacks for short Lupe Fiasco talked all about food and liquor I took what I learned from the words and I filtered it through the Scriptures”
My late Pastor "Roberto Torres" who was a Producer and Rapper had this same discussion with us as artists during the time you started Reach Records. His vision with working with secular artist, doing production with them, and sharing his faith in Jesus with them was a call he felt God had given him. Our views on this very topic was divided, and what once was, didn't manifest. You breaking this down today made me think of him, and the vision he had. Everyone isn't called to do what you do as you know, but I sincerely believe God has poured out His favor in your life because of the heart you have towards all people. Jesus saw the crowd, and was moved with compassion. I learned a lot today, and thank you for addressing this topic and being led through prayer to do so!
All of the biggest rappers talk about selling their soul to the devil. Considering the soul is the mind and the emotions, when they stand in the booth and record these songs and we listen to them, is it possible that we are being involved in a different type of "worship". Is there some type of subsconcious effect on our joy and our faith. I mean, i grew up on busta rhymes and nelly, and christian rap has just started to get more creative. Alot of the times i have to train myself to listen to music that uplifts the Lord and remind myself to keep my mind on Him.
Beautiful way of answering that question Mr Lecrae , I know a lot of people won't agree with what you said because it is a very sensitive topic but i totally agree
I think we as Christians should never be torn and compromise on this issues however I do understand the complexities of being a Christian rapper as its your job and craft.....as a christian who isn't a rapper though you should definitely just listen to christ centered gospel music
Lecrae, i have been listening to you since i was 6 years old. You are one of my role models, and i think very highly of you. Thank you for putting out content like this. Time to bring America back on the right path🙏🏻 If you could love this comment and reply, it would mean the world to me.
"Jesus did not hang out with sinners, sinners hung out with Jesus" That's a really helpful way to conceptualize, thank you for sharing. I also appreciate the discussion around meat sacrificed to idols and how Paul talks about when you might choose for or against eating meat. I have been reading Revelation lately, and particularly the letters to the 7 churches. This topic seems to fit in will especially with what Jesus says to the church in Thyatira. He has a big problem with those who promote sexual immorality and food sacrificed to idols, but goes on to say " But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them-I place no other burden on you. 25 Nevertheless what you have, hold firmly until I come. " (Revelation 2:24-25 NASB)
Lecrea, I have been to multiple shows of yours, I have listened to you at Central Church in sioux falls. I strugggle so much on knowing what I should listen to or not. This epsode of yours really opened my eyes. Thanks for all you do.I hope to meet you soon.
Listennnnn. I really respect Lecrae and the artists that worked hard to change the game. I love that you offer a whole different messge to someone who's looking for "rap music". But up until about 45:19, this sounded like a master class for rap artists. Because you were a pioneer Lecrae, there were a lot of different avenues that you had to travel. But by no means would I encourage my 15-year-old son to listen to secular music. Because the truth of the matter is anyone that is wanting to persue rap and but not necessarily fall into the industry trap, You yourself have made that available to others. You and many many other artists have changed the narrative of how "christian music" sounds. Yes if someone wanted to become a great filmmaker they could reach out to Spielberg, but they also can reach out to the Kendrick Brothers. The point is that many people have yeilded themselves to CHRIST and vow to be a light not just a lampshade. And a wholeheartedly agree with what you said about people going into the "hood" and offering alternatives, showing up for everyone and providing a way out
I say no ! I I use to but one Wednesday night at a worship night /Bible study the Holy Spirit convicted me to get rid of my secular music. It was hard because I loved reaggeton , sala etc but I did it. I felt so much better spiritually. Now if I’m in a grocery store and hear a dirty secular song I feel uncomfortable. It’s so worth it. What you listen to , watch , who you are around you become.
Let me say something to that…. Our music, Latin music, is overly sexual and sensual. It is dirty. We need to be real. There is a lot of music like this that has a negative culture. There are other genres that don’t. Explore something new. Cheers.
Proverbs 23:19 Listen, my son and be wise; keep your mind on the right course Lets be careful who we follow and listen to, believers! Tough times right now not sure why we discussing whether music good or not. The movies lecrae mentioned in the beginning is still a reality in Cali ..I have yet seen anyone hit the streets to influence our streets. Makes me miss p4cm days!! To baby Christians ..everything he's saying is right but please please ...just cut the music off if it's gone have you looking for the "clean version" or have you guessing if u should play it or not. March and step to your own beat and praise and worship our Lord
We each have our own convictions. Listen I'm bald as ever and I love Jesus. For some Christians that's a no no and for other's who cares, my hair or no hair is not a salvation issue. Now to the subject. If a Christian believes they should only listen to Christian music that's your business,. I guess that means not going to the store, any parties or interactions because someone somewhere will be listening to secular music. If a Christian has no conviction about secular music that's their business, I grew up on Gospel/Christian, old school R&B & Smooth Jazz (Boney James, Najee) as I gotten older, wiser in my walk I have moved away from R&B I prefer Smooth Jazz. Even in that ,I am a strong believer in not listening to anything raunchy, overly sexual or plain nasty. But I don't have conviction about listening to Jazz, and I love Jesus with everything in me. And respectfully when I get married I don't want to hear"Near the Cross" nor any Christian music at the wedding or my wedding night 😂 but if that's what another Christian desires that's their business. I said all this to say less be respectfully of folks convictions and stance on music. If a person just came from the streets only listening to Tupac and they get saved, don't expect them to turn to Hezekiah Walker overnight its a process. Some don't eat meat, look at TV, only wear modest clothes for others they believe this is bondage we all have our own convictions. Let the Holy Spirit do the work, and just live for Jesus Christ.
We don’t function off of convictions, we fully function off of the word of God. When the Bible says something that we’re not convicted of we then go to God with a need for him to make our hearts line up with his word. If you don’t FEEL convicted about something that the word says, that now between you and the Lord to wrestle with that. But this is a great discussion! Thank you for sharing and have a great day sister ❤
@@joebungus3447stop telling people how to live their life you sch¹zo. You don't know if she has alopecia. Then again, why do I expect understanding, consideration, and acceptance from a 🤢 christian of all people?
@@mramirez5239 It's both... there are Christians always looking to condemn something that they don't understand because it doesn't line up with what "they believe is right". They fail to get context and proper understanding. There are Christians for whom this might not be their speed but they must follow their "own" convictions. None of this is a heaven or hell issue in my opinion. Crae makes music that inspires me to keep fighting the good fight of faith. For example, "Only Human"... is one of my favorite tracks. I just don't understand why Christians want other Christians to stay in a box and not impact the world with our God-given gifts? We were meant to do more than just stay in our Comfortable Christian Circles. At the end of the day... God allowed and guided the Israelites to take over the land and possessions of the wicked nations. Our voice and talents need to be loud just like the world's voice... we should be tired of being locked in a box by other Christians.
@@mramirez5239 he surprisingly gave much more scripture to test for his argument. I’d love to hear the discernment of other believers on this. But some will certainly be Pharisees.
Stop listening to it altogether.the spirit behind ANY secular music is not the Spirit Of God. It does not glorify God it glorifies self and the world...but it is a process so I really pray The Lord Jesus helps you to stop listening to secular music and that' you'd see the dangers of it regardless of how "clean" it seems.
@@SamanthaNkala-e3vthis is lacking lots of nuance and critical thinking. By that logic, listening to classical music must be sinful then. You could also apply this logic to the phone you use. How do you know if your phone was made by a Christian. Do you apply this logic to books as well? Is reading a history book sinful? Do you only read theology books?
This Episode made me realize that how much effort you where putting for this industry for decades. Definitely sure that the secular music industry tried their best to stop you but the gates of hell shall not prevail!! @lecrae all I can say to you is thanks for making a revolution... don't stop keep Going much Love from the heart of the Motherland
Thank you @lecrae for embracing NUANCE! This topic of conversation for YEARS has always been heavily driven by binary thinking! Some ONLY see black and white and we never talk about the GREY area that we ALL live in. I hate that we are still having this conversation; but I get it! 🤷🏾♂️
I totally understand what you‘re saying. And sometimes I go study a Kendrick Lamar. But that‘s also playing with fire if you get influenced quickly. That‘s why we need more christians hip hop artists who actually care about bars and songwriting, storytelling etc.
They do a lot of spells on music and movies and the secular artists aren't afraid to let us know who they worship and work for. As an artist I try to find a happy medium because I don't want to be seen as "corny" but I also want to be honest. As a listener I feel what we entertain effects our spirit more than we realize. It all depends on where you are in your walk. I also listen so I know what's going on in that realm so I can stay with the times.
Tbh I grew up a "screw up" yet when I herd secular music I used it to "express" what I could relate to and "survive" what I was going through/dealing with but at the same time flipped it for the positive to press toward the Kingdom of God. In a twisted way I took from the world and used for the glory of God. Did that til God rescued, healed, and delivered me. However, even in the midst of the craziness I also was able to listen to and play gospel around unsaved individuals and they could 'feel" it. Seeds planted, God gives the increase 🙌
I recently have been cutting out worldly hip hop because the words I would listen to of future or Kodak went into my heart and my life started reflecting that’s. Then i started listening to lecrae, kb, Caleb Gordon, and etc. The Bible says what comes in through your eyes and ears goes to your heart so if all your listening to is about money, drugs, sex, and violence that’s what is going to show in your life whether u like it or not. I would encourage yall to be more careful of what you are putting in your heart
I tried listening explicitly to christian music only simply because it was christian and it was taught. Did that for a few years until I told God this is tiresome. I feel more in bondage as a christian then when I was fully sinning. Only to realise that almost everything Crae just said is spot on. We are free in christ people. Let me end it with this. My mother in law had a crazy ice cream addiction. She ate and ate and ate. We would confront her about it (out of love) and tell her it wasn't healthy but she just continued. Mind you she ate a lot of ice cream every single day. Until one day.. she just quit. I tried to test her a few times and see if she really didn'nt want it and she said: It's not that im not allowed to take it or can't take it.. I simply don't WANT it anymore. God bless y'all!
I'm the same way too, maybe even more so because the genre I listen to is not commonly produced by Christians sadly And even though I try to listen to more Christian music to keep my mind on God, I still will oftentimes find and listen to secular songs to listen to. I've never had a problem with that (so long as the songs aren't actually bad or about evil). However, I have had a problem with idolatry, much like your mother-in-law with ice cream. Too much of a treat can be bad. You just have to be careful is all
This is a great topic. I'm a producer so I feel the same way. I came up on dre, timbo,Kanye, and others because I was drawn to the production and learning that craft. Now I can use that and what I learned for the glory of God and bring a different sound. To God be the glory 🙌🏿🙌🏿
@@BOMBERPALMER simple. From every bad situation, create good. Me myself listen to Kanye of the 200s, Nas of the 90s, kendrick and cole, simply because most of their music is creative and improves me in many ways like inspiration when I'm falling asleep or weak, workout, creativity, not giving up. I know they are many musics not too listen to. For example: under the influence by Chris brown, and many 21 savage songs, becsuse he keeps on shouting pu*sy. Evil music is a whole different level and I think that's what Lil uzi vert, nas x sings. Like obviously, you can judge from their lifestyle. Lil uzi vert spent 350k dolls on an upside down chain. Just imagine that. GOD has been so good to me in making me distasteful of any song so polluting.
You can’t compare intentionally turning on lil baby and listening to him to being a bystander who happen to overhear a conversation in a store. That’s not the same 18:00
I listen to “secular” music. I listen to a lot of musicals, like Hamilton and I’m not sure if that is “secular” but I don’t listen to it nearly as much as I used to. 90% of what I listen to is worship music. Helps my anxiety.
That’s secular but not evil, there’s a big difference, for example I love jazz, and also an artist I like is Michael Jackson, both Michael and the genre of jazz is secular, but not evil, so not all secular music is evil, we should avoid evil music
Do you listen to secular music? 🤔
Kinda
Personally as a Christian rapper, I actually ONLY listen to Christian rap, guys like you, andy, NF, indie tribe.
I do.
Yes, but I choose what I listen to
Yup always did and always will all kind of music not just rap ..love my 90's pop lol

It's not about where one lived it's what the will and mind of God that's what ought to be done
We playing a dangerous game here, there is a difference between secular music and 'evil music' like smooth jazz is secular, sexyred pound town IS evil, inciting and glorifying sin is evil, let's be real.....
I agree
Well said 👏🏾💯
True
Jazz is secular? I didn't know
That's not 'evil'. It's just bad.
Secular music was a STRONGHOLD until I came to the conclusion that it's either God or Satan ; Heaven or hell...I chose Christ! You can't go through life with one foot in Christ and the other in the world.
Amen to that! ❤
You can't serve two masters. Choose THIS DAY whom you will serve
Elaborate please.
Same! ❤

Amen. Same here.
Love what you’ve said here!
This. Perfectly said.
Amen
At the end of the day, it’s really all about discernment, because not all secular music is bad, everyone’s wired differently and everyone’s walk don’t have to be the same, it really comes down to what artists you listen to, how their songs make you feel and your reason for why you listen to them, nobody should be judging each other for what they listen to if it ain’t hurting anybody or themselves but at the same time, we definitely should be mindful of WHAT and WHO we listen to
@@othasida2639 a balanced view imho
🎰🎯💯
Well I’d argue that some music is harmful. And we know that music can influence a culture. So music promoting not only sin by Christian’s standards, but music that promotes violence and sexual exploitation, yeah I think that’s harmful for all of us.
I always maintained the mindset that as long as it doesn’t drive you to sin or tempt you to do certain things, you can listen to whatever music you like. Obviously some people receive and react to stuff differently. I do have boundaries myself as I’m not out here listening to artists like Sexxy Red
Agreed
For me most secular music has lyrics that doesn’t need to enter my ears as a person who trying my best to strve for holiness. And two this music triggers me because when I was living in sin secular music had an effect on me in different ways
AMEN
Exactly what he talking bout, see Now you explaining where you coming from. I Love It.🙏🏾❤️✊🏾🤙🏾

I completely agree. I fell short many times because I listened to it and the spirits attached to those songs influenced me to do unholy things. I gotta get back on track cuz Christ is coming back soon.
It’s not your meat , don’t eat it , like he said ….
This has got to be one of the most redemptive perspectives on music I've ever heard! 😭 Thank you, Jesus, that you're redeeming music and culture for your glory!
Praise him. Don’t let other “Christian’s” say anything that gets to you.
If God can redeem Peter and Paul, then Kendrick and Aaliyah can be redeemed 🎉
Honestly crae is a wordsmith 🫡
i might be a white boy but i grew up broke, too. i was just into NAS as much as i loved Nirvana growing up.
When Reach made MAN UP... it was exactly what I needed and I am the man I am today coz of that project...
That's not a good thing
@@GeneralJLC it's called consistency... and I'm sure it's not a bad thing either.
@@GeneralJLC Well, Jesus is the same yestreday, today and forever, What can you say about it?
I personally would not call Diddy parties consistent, nor rapping about drinking or a baby momma.
I understand exactly what he is saying. It takes wisdom from God to know how to navigate this space.
It is the lyrics that matter most. The meaning behind the message.
Keep keeping it 💯 Lecrae. As someone who’s on the fence with my faith I appreciate what you do.

This is a very good conversation. I’ve had this topic come up several times in my conversations with people.

Im focused on creating music for Jesus
That's what we have to do bro, be so good that the world cant ignore us. May the holyspirit give us grace to make music spirit filled and excellent

Plot twist: not all Christian music is biblically sound or theologically accurate. Do we keep listening to it anyway?
The Bible never said Secular vs Christian, but Good vs Evil. Discernment is knowing the difference.

Facts !!

We speak against secular music but we don't do same for secular movies, why????
Well I don't know for sure but I assume music is more of a spiritual block also I will say this the same way not all secular music is bad not all secular movies are bad
Some of us do. Let God into all parts of your life and see which "rooms in your house He flicks the lights on" so you can see new areas to clean up.
Who’s “we”? My mom been telling me to watch what I’m putting in my spirit 😭
Amazing commentary! Thank you for taking the time to share all your insight! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
This is going to be good.
Why?
@@frederickweeksjr.1189because it's not talked about enough.
WHAT AN HONEST CONVERSATION
Appreciate your interpretation Lecrae. God Bless you brother.

My late Pastor "Roberto Torres" who was a Producer and Rapper had this same discussion with us as artists during the time you started Reach Records. His vision with working with secular artist, doing production with them, and sharing his faith in Jesus with them was a call he felt God had given him.
Alot of the times i have to train myself to listen to music that uplifts the Lord and remind myself to keep my mind on Him.
woahhh i never thought of it like that. that’s why i stopped listening to secular music

True and not true because many of those “sinners” Jesus called them and asked them to follow him.

And a wholeheartedly agree with what you said about people going into the "hood" and offering alternatives, showing up for everyone and providing a way out
Thanks Lecrae this was very helpful🙏🏾.
Cheers.
It's crazy that this shows up on my fyp right after watching the Kendrick drop.

Lets be careful who we follow and listen to, believers!
You can tell this was very thought out and I appreciate that
We each have our own convictions.
1 Corinthians 11-verse 6 literally tells you that shaving your head is an act of rebellion towards God, why do you do it?
@@joebungus3447stop telling people how to live their life you sch¹zo. You don't know if she has alopecia. Then again, why do I expect understanding, consideration, and acceptance from a 🤢 christian of all people?
Hands down one of the most legendary content I've listen to
ohhhhh mannnn all the Pharisees waiting for this one!!!!
Is it pharisees or is it discernment and testing all things, Bro?

This is a great conversation... I can see how people can argue both sides
40:23 Ferrari functioning as a bicycle is some fighting words bruh 🤣
Really good analogy tho
This is soooo good. On multiple levels. Thanks for your transparency, teaching and perspective.
I listen to secular music but I don’t listen to explicit, violent or sexually exploitative music for any reason, as I am too porous in nature.
@@SamanthaNkala-e3v You're saying songs like "Mr. Blue Sky" is problematic?
@@SamanthaNkala-e3vthis is lacking lots of nuance and critical thinking. By that logic, listening to classical music must be sinful then. You could also apply this logic to the phone you use. How do you know if your phone was made by a Christian. Do you apply this logic to books as well? Is reading a history book sinful? Do you only read theology books?

Very fair and genuine points. I hear you, keep preaching brotha 💪🏼God Bless🙏🏼

I absolutely get what you are saying. You may not agree with the person or their lifestyle but you can’t deny their craft or their creativity.
What spells?

We need to spread peace like God spread the sea
This is such a healthy and cohesive commentary thank you for this ❤👏
I tried listening explicitly to christian music only simply because it was christian and it was taught.
God will find GREAT Christian music to fit your style. Seriously, He did it for me!!
@@melliemel32 There's not a lot of christian music you can show me that I don't know already. But I appreciate the gesture 🙏🏽
I'm the same way too, maybe even more so because the genre I listen to is not commonly produced by Christians sadly
And even though I try to listen to more Christian music to keep my mind on God, I still will oftentimes find and listen to secular songs to listen to.
I've never had a problem with that (so long as the songs aren't actually bad or about evil). However, I have had a problem with idolatry, much like your mother-in-law with ice cream. Too much of a treat can be bad. You just have to be careful is all
Some of us learnt reading and writing from Atheists and now we use that literacy to preach the gospel
We learn our skill sets from secular institutions...secular is not always evil ..this is woke bro
Secular just means non religious
