I think removing the battery top keeps the manufacturers from cheaping out on the assembly. I have seen other RUclipsrs criticize construction quality and the manufacturers made improvements on future releases, so yes, disassembly helps the consumer and should be included in your assessments. Thanks Tom for doing these tests, you and Jasonoid are really good at this.

I don't agree. Cutting them open has really shown the types of build quality we are working with. Some of these "budget" batteries have had *very* poor build quality with sub-standard cells and we would have no idea without a break-down. A couple of reviewers cutting open their batteries could save 100's or even 1000's of us from buying some garbage. Donate the the cut-up battery and let someone have fun with it and put it back together.

I would say, don’t destroy a perfectly good battery, but that being said, I would be fascinated to see why this battery has such a compact profile with the same amp hours in such a small package. I would want to see how they did it, what corners they cut if any. As far as in general, what you do with your excess products I think you should give it away to your audience when you hit a particular milestones of your account or someone on your Patreon if you have one.

I just finished my 11th home built power box... bolted to the floor in my old GMC camper van between the front seats.
300 amp hr Chins, 2000 watt Renogy inverter, 40 amp Renogy MPPT, BT-2 blue tooth, Renogy battery meter, 400 watts of panels on top, USB and 12 volt outlets, proper fuses. My friend's 8 month old Ecoflow in his motorhome went dead one morning. They sent him another within 2 weeks. I have all kinds of spare inverters, MPPT units, parts galore if anything fails. My friend uses his EcoFlow to power up electronic for music gigs and really depends on battery power.

You have the heart of a nomad. The community has a solid reputation of helping others in need. It reflects your heart and desire to help people with limited needs. When you are on BLM camping and obtain a way to harness energy from the sun, it is a life changer and makes life more manageable. You could make a follow up video with the people you have given them and see how the battery is holding up. It's too bad they cannot send you two for your research; one to open and the other to pay it forward.

Love the “Jaguar ” fuse box reference. As a diy guy, I’m a shade tree mechanic as well. Without a doubt the British Leyland electoral systems are a nightmare for me in the old days . Don’t chop them up. Most don’t even know what they’re looking at. I purposely didn’t buy my lipo4’s with the heating element. Wasn’t worth the extra cost as I do not charge at night and not that many days is it below freezing in my local. I just flip a switch to start or stop the charging.

Over the years, I had 8 Triumph Spitfires and 6 of the GT-6 cars. Lucas sucked. When I needed a heater fan switch from the British Only wrecking yard, out of 10 cars, all would be missing the heater switch. Many other electrical parts were similar. I bought these cars cheap...2 things ALWAYS wrong....rear axle U-joints would fail and knock badly as you stopped and the tiny joke of a clutch disk would be worn out.

  • @catch22frubert
    @catch22frubert Год назад +5

Hey professor! I know I'm late to the party on giving advice for the disassembly of the batteries you review, but I think having a look inside of certain batteries could be useful. If it's a standard size, standard weight battery for it's ratings, it's likely to have standard prismatic Lifepo4 cells inside and probably one of the standard BMS units used in most of the drop in LiFePO4 batteries. It's only when something new or special comes in that opening it up to see how it works or what cells and BMS are being used that opening the top could give you and your viewers valuable information. You are always going to have the crowd that won't buy anything unless they see what exactly is being used inside the battery, and you could absolutely still do that on every battery without compromising the seal around the top of the battery. It will require extra work and a little extra investment on your part, but it wouldn't be difficult to do. To start, you need to stick the battery in a deep freezer for about 24 hours. This will make the silicone or glue used to seal the top of the battery very brittle. From there, you should be able to take something like a putty knife and a dead blow hammer, and break the seal around the top of the battery without damaging anything at all. Now you are inside the battery with no damage. To get it back together with a functional seal around the top again, you can refreeze the original sealant and scrape off what remains on the top and on the battery casing, which will allow you to cleanly reseal the battery to have it's original weather protection and water resistance. As a backup, you could always get a plastic welder and go around the top of the battery after resealing, and you will be guaranteed to have a water tight seal again. Honestly, the new sealant you choose to go around the top of the battery should be enough to make it waterproof again, but if you really want to make sure it's waterproof, the plastic welder would certainly finish the job and make it perfect.

battery charging and discharging time testing is only accurate if the battery is fully back to room temperature after each test. The exterior case may show a slightly elevated temperature, however the internal temperatures on the cells will be significantly higher. Unless the battery has external thermocouple ports to read these temps, letting it sit for 5 min does next to nothing. It would need to sit for several hours for accurate time testing.

I would say don’t cut into it or any of them. Much better to pass them on to those that are in need. 👍

Cut it open, then plastic weld when you are done. Plastic welding is not hard, I have done it plenty of times.

Off the subject for today ….but why would the Ecoflow wave 2 ac cord keep popping it’s own …part of the cord …circuit breaker . Worked today new the first time but now will not stay in when plugged into the wall , even when I unplug it from the Eco flow wave 2 , just the cord plugged int the wall it still trips the circuit breaker on the plug of the cord . Thanks

I don't plan on doing any boondocking, just want to run some lights and the ice box when driving. What size battery do I need? Rv has a residential 20 cu/ft ice box. Great video.

Thank you for your review. I think it's great that you share the batteries with people who need them. I think the battery should stay intact so someone can benefit from it. As always, I like the information you share.

What would happen if I took 6 of these and put it in series? I need it for a 72v application and I'll love this style of battery

No, do not cut them open. It’s a waste for the environment. Most viewers wouldn’t care once they see the insides once or twice. Your format is perfect as it is. And it’s cool that you donate. Nice way to pay it forward.

I go to your website because you do complete testing. What are the cells? What changes gave the ability to go smaller? Pouches? What brand? Connections?

Some bright person could really sell a well designed temperature based 12v 150 amp relay that is packaged as an 'inline' device which can simply be attached between any battery and the charging source. This general purpose relay is not difficult in concept, but sourcing the components and putting them into a robust dustproof and water resistant package would take a little work.

Great video as always. No need to cut it open to find out how it's made. There are several people out there who already do it

It is nice to know about quality of components, as well as assembly, but maybe open up one of each battery brand.

Please review power needs for vehicle based, mostly 12v/120 appliances vs household appliances. Also, how to build install a portable system for vehicle use that can disconnect from vehicle grounding and then hook-up to home based panels and grounding. Thanks

I like your testing process, as it provides us real world info we need to know before buying. I say, no need to do a ‘tear down’. It is nice to know but think most people just want to know price/performance.
My opinion; refrain from doing a tear down and donate excess equipment. Happy end users are the best for vendor’s sales.

The reccomended charge Amp is 20A. Can I charge at 50A frequently. Will 50A also damage the battery? 20A to charge for 5hours is just too slow for me.

I don't need you to tear it apart. I was wondering, could you somehow water cool it to take some of that heat away? Maybe submerge it to just below the top? Or set it against a glass fish tank? Just to get th a t heat away.

I would say no to chopping up good batteries just to look inside. Now if the battery suddenly goes on a rampage then it should be cut open to see what we might expect to happen to our batteries. I am wondering though about using two of these mini's in series for extended service on a four wheeled handicapped scooter for my wife. I have just the right amount of space to replace the two 12V X 35A SLA batteries that are on the scooter, but like your poll I have gotten both pros and cons feedback on using LiFePO4 vs lead/acid batteries. Any thoughts or suggestions ???
