Checkmate is if they're in check and they have no moves. A stalemate (which is a draw) is a situation where a King cannot move but he is not in check. Stalemate is a legitimate strategy for drawing a game that you're losing.
+Yoshiman__ Stalemate is when all of your pieces can't move. Like your opponent is 1 move from checkmating you, your King can't move but you have a pawn on an open file and it is your turn to move assuming you can't promote next move it is a clear win. You probably knew this but I figured I'd say it. :) :P

Floyd Palmer No hes right, official rules are that if the king is NOT in check, and his only availble moves would put his king in check its a stalemate.
Lortagreb Oh, for some reason I thought he was saying if the king IS in check, and all available moves put the king in check, then it's a stalemate...which would of course be garbage, because how could you ever win? Lol
+Lortagreb Why would it ever arrive to a stalemate. This only happens when the players facing each other are bad, and think of eating the pieces instead of giving check.
I totally agree with Rhett's not just letting his kids win. I've played chess against my grandpa since I was probably five, and the one time I beat him, the game had gone for four hours. It's sincerely one of the proudest moments of my life. :]
stale mate is when your not in check but wherever you move you would be in check (tie) check mate is when your in check and you cant move because everywhere else would put you in check as well (win)
King 1 one square away from King 2. Opposing king's move towards king results in the following move allowing King 1 to capture King 2. Yes you can use your King to set up checkmate. But no you can't checkmate if the only piece you have left is a King, but that should be pretty easy to avoid unless your name is Link.
If the king, as the only remaining piece, is not in check, yet may not move due to entrapment (any move would place the king in check) the game is in fact a stalemate...which is why you never let that happen as the winning player.
You cannot make a move that puts your own king into check. If your king is currently in check and no move will get it out of check, that's checkmate. If you king is not currently in check, but every possible move would put the king into check, that's a stalemate.
Checkmate - when any move a player makes would mean they move into check AND they are currently in check. Stalemate - when on their turn a player can only make moves that move them into check, BUT AREN'T currently in check. "In opposition" - a term used to describe when both kings are facing each other with one orthogonal square between them, so that both kings can't move closer or the other would take them. Zugzwang - when any move a player would make would put them into a worse position, but they have to move anyway. In tournaments if a player accidentally makes an illegal move by moving into check, he gets a strike, and if he gets to 3 strikes he loses. His opponent also adds two minutes to his timer. He takes his move back and can make another with the same piece unless all moves with that piece are illegal, in which case he can move with any other piece (the touch-piece-move rule). Other illegal moves are similarly punished.
A king cannot be used for assault because the two kings can only be 2 squares apart, what I mean by this is that there always has to be one square seperating the two kings. So a king can not put anothing king in check, but the king can knock off pawns or any piece if he is not in check or goes into check by doing that move.
All these young kids saying they've done an IQ test. I'm 18, and I've never taken one. I literally wouldn't know how to take one. (I believe most online ones are fake)
For anyone wondering: 1. You can't move into check. 2. If you're not in check but you can't move without putting yourself into check, it's a stalemate. 3. If you're in check, and can't move out of check, it's a checkmate.
A check is a condition in chess, shogi and xiangqi that occurs when a player's king or general in xiangqi is under threat of capture on their opponent's next turn. A king so threatened is said to be in check. A player must get out of check, if possible, by interposing a piece between the threatening piece and the king, capturing the threatening piece, or moving the king to a square where it is no longer in check. If the player cannot move out of check, the game ends in checkmate and the player loses
It's amazing how little these guys -- Link in particular -- know about chess. When Link refers to a "stalemate" he's actually talking about a "draw." Many games end in draws, but very few end in stalemate, which a very specific kind of draw. Namely that the player is not in check, but any move he would make would put him in check. That creates an immediate draw. Other types of draws would be: by agreement, by insufficient material, or by three-fold repetition.
Stale mate is a position counting as a draw, in which a player is not in check but cannot move except into check. Check mate is a check from which a king cannot escape.
I am sure others have said this, but if the next move the opposing king would make would result in a check (ie: the king can't make a move) it ends with a stalemate like Link says. Or as we awesomely call it in my language: a Patt. For you to actually win the game, you need to Check the opposing king whilst at the same time the opposing king can make no legal moves to escape and none can intervene. That is Checkmate, and that is what wins the game. Nothing else is an actual victory.
I met an 8yr old on Xbox and his iq is 249. He has a lot of problems. When his mom died his big brother killed himself. Recently his dad died from pancreatic cancer. He is THE SMARTEST PERSON I have ever met. He's been in the hospital lately and he told me they think they found cancer cells. Ive known him for about a year and it's terrible to see someone with amazing potential just go to waste when it's not even their fault. He's so adorable and he's got a lil raspy cute voice it's just heart wrenching.
Zeruth Impossible to have over 200 unless you Steven Hawking.Anyone in real life with an iq over 140 is considered genius. In the big bag show thats supposed to be their level of intelligence.
Someone could have said that but I`ll say that anyway... Checkmate is when your king is under check AND you can`t move him on the neighbour spot. For example, I check a king with my queen. Enemy king is under attack, he has to move somewhere, but all neighbour spots are attacked by my horses and pawns. THAT is considered a Checkmate.
My dad and I used to play Stratego, and yeah, I was always super proud if I managed to beat him, because I knew it was a legitimate win. Don't hold back. Your kids will be happy when they finally win.
Yes, you can not move the king into check if there is another legal move. If it is only a king vs king and one king gets trapped and the only move is into check, that is checkmate, not stalemate.
I think what Link was talking about is when one player can only move his/her king ,that is not in check, but all normally available moves for said king will place that king in check resulting in a stalemate. This does not happen often nor does only the king being left for both players, most games end in a checkmate. Either Link is really bad at chess to have a majority of his games result in a stalemate or he does not fully understand the rules. Also a King could never create a check to the opposing kink, for that would cause your king to also be moving into check, the king can take other pieces however as long as it is not putting itself in check when doing so or trying to do so.
have you ever thought of putting some like soothing music behind your good mythical more's? I was listening to some while watching this vid and it went eally well...just a thought :). love your show btw
i took 3 IQ tests for my psych class in high school and scored 167, 171, and 170. im pretty sure my IQ has been dropping though. i quit giving a shit about a lot. IQ doesn't really mean anything either. someone with a low IQ that has a lot of drive can accomplish far greater things than someone with a high IQ and a love drive.
Sonny van Leur i didn't proof read because its a youtube comment and i truly don't care. and i'm aware i should capitalize the letter "I." tis no big deal. "attention spam"
If a player has no moves that result in placing oneself in check, the game is resolved in a stalemate. However, this is extremely uncommon, and generally occurs when a player puts one's self into stalemate to prevent themselves from loosing (and has the rare opportunity to easily do so).
A king can only put the opposing king into check by discovered check. Google what that is if you do not know. If the king were to actually attack the opposing king, it would need to be adjacent to it since a king only controls the squares right around it. Therefore if it attacked the enemy king by moving adjacent to it, it could be taken, as it would put itself into check. This is what link was saying is illegal, and it is illegal.
They see more of what is hidden behind the veil of 'you will understand this when you are older' before they have a properly rooted psyche to deal with it. And that's *before* parental and outside pressure for them to be used for specific agendas.
There was a video of Bobby Fisher as a kid when he was on "I've Got a Secret", a 1950's game show where celebrities of the time tried to guess your talent or occupation. They sent him to Russia for the first time to play chess.
I agree with Link on this. I believe you can´t even check yourself AT ALL. If you make a move that checks you and the other player notices, you have to UNDO your move.
Just took two IQ tests. Though, I'm not sure how accurate they are I got a 149 on my first one and a 163 on my second so they're quite different. Btw I'm 15. So not a child genius. :(
Branden Rhoades Ouch. Sorry if I don't care about how I type on the internet. It's like how you said, "Grammar says 87...". When you should' have said your "Your grammar says it's 87...". Trust me dude I have nothing to prove to people on RUclips. It's just people like you that feel like they have to disprove and be a smart ass to another person's comment that make me mad. Btw IQ isn't how smart you are or how much you know. It's about how fast or well you can pick up new things? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Link's talking about a stalemate situation where the only move a player has is to put their king into check, but they're not currently checked. This is a stalemate, and nobody wins. It's a clever situation to try and force when you know you can't win.
I've got a screenshot of the online test I took but I guess you can never be sure whether the test is fair. Regardless, you have no idea who I am and do not have the right to accuse me of lying so I will let the issue go as I am not petty enough to go out of my way to make someone else feel bad. Thanks for your contribution, Ozzie
Ozzies4thewin HAHAHA, please don't take online tests seriously AT ALL. I got 6 different i.q's from different websites last year. They aren't constructed in the same way the proffesional ones are.
If you have no legal move and you're not in check, or if the same position occurs three times (with a couple of exceptions) or if there is no way a checkmate can occur with the pieces remaining on the board, then the game is a draw. There are a couple of other ways a draw can occur as well.
100 is average, 120+ is above average, and 130+ is genius, but the online tests to see how high your IQ is aren't very accurate, I scored a 122 and that's good, but I'm not sure how accurate those tests are, they might be,by all means idk
Dude, age has nothing to do with Intelligence. Intelligence is kinda like the 'speed' at which you learn. It doesn't change unless you get brain damage.
I would LOVE to see Rhett and Link play chess against each other. That would be AWESOME.
OH MY GOD listening them talk about chess I'm just screaming to myself NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
But, chess is astoundingly fun in my opinion. What is your reasoning for not enjoying it?
verycoolwilliam No I mean like they had no clue what they were talking about. Rehtt acted like he was boasting at first, but then showed he didn't really know much. I want to play rehtt. Or anyone for that matter, I'm feeling a little chess-y right now
no Oh, that makes a lot more sense because obviously no one can hate that glorious game.
True chess is an amazingly outstanding game.
You should try out go. It is much deeper, much more difficult, but i find that it is also much more fun.

Link got really serious and seemed genuinely concerned/interested in the fates of these children with genius IQs.

My dad and I used to play Stratego, and yeah, I was always super proud if I managed to beat him, because I knew it was a legitimate win. Don't hold back. Your kids will be happy when they finally win.
My IQ is 37, my parents is proud ;D
No ones is that low just to let ya know
Callum Davage I have 135 right now
Most insane child genius:
Sherlock's sister.
Is that Judge Judy in the background?

A king cannot move INTO check.
a Check-Mate is when a king is already IN check, and cannot get out of it.
I'm a dog genius
Lol I'm a neckless gienous
No, it's a marsupial. Look it up
King can't move into check and if he does the game is not over
So did Rhett ever play against Link's kids? Who won?
Rhett
who's next ? You decide !!!
Yes, you can not move the king into check if there is another legal move. If it is only a king vs king and one king gets trapped and the only move is into check, that is checkmate, not stalemate.
I WAS A Child Genius!! I Started Reading Chapter Books At Age...............13!
OMG!!!
Iqra Maqbool Ikr
Elephant123 I started reading at the age of 1.... Lol
Iqra Maqbool Well Than I'm Better Than U At Reading!! U only Started At Age "1" ??? Pathetic compared 2 Me.
Elephant123 actually you're pathetic! You started reading chapter books at 13??? I started reading chapter books at the age of 6!
the king can't move into being killed, but can be moved into check
I'm fresh out the womb and my IQ is 600
Ashby Laws Same tho
Don't give out your IQ!!!
"Bring your kids over to my house and I'll play with them" - Rhett 2014
Lol
If you know what I mean
Rhett hardly ever plays chess, but when he does, he always wins.
I am nineteen years old and I read at a 30 month old level
I do to but I'm 9 so
I encourage you to keep reading, because there is so much I have learned from mere words.
A king cant put a king in check when the two kings are the only pieces left, but you can slowly try and trap them in a corner
Did you know playing an instrument is scientifically proven to make you smarter than if you didn't?
Fijigoya 123 man it has almost been a year since I said that
Mr. SpazBubbles So?
Not really,it can help you with some stuff, but that's called the Mozart effect, and it had been proven to be a myth.
have you ever thought of putting some like soothing music behind your good mythical more's? I was listening to some while watching this vid and it went eally well...just a thought :). love your show btw
i took 3 IQ tests for my psych class in high school and scored 167, 171, and 170. im pretty sure my IQ has been dropping though. i quit giving a shit about a lot. IQ doesn't really mean anything either. someone with a low IQ that has a lot of drive can accomplish far greater things than someone with a high IQ and a love drive.
Agreed.
Your IQ or attention spam is dropping. Unless you meant to capitalize some letters and you meant to say love drive.
Sonny van Leur i didn't proof read because its a youtube comment and i truly don't care. and i'm aware i should capitalize the letter "I." tis no big deal. "attention spam"
Thumbs up. Love drive
If a player has no moves that result in placing oneself in check, the game is resolved in a stalemate. However, this is extremely uncommon, and generally occurs when a player puts one's self into stalemate to prevent themselves from loosing (and has the rare opportunity to easily do so).
im 12 and my teacher said i had a very very high iq for my age
but yet you're still an idiot
The ending was hilarious!!
Am I the only one going crazy at them not understanding chess ;_;
This is what link was saying is illegal, and it is illegal.
after some research i found that most child genius stories end pretty bad
They see more of what is hidden behind the veil of 'you will understand this when you are older' before they have a properly rooted psyche to deal with it. And that's *before* parental and outside pressure for them to be used for specific agendas.
Also in a match of kings its a stalemate because if one king moves into a position where it can take the other into check it itself would be in check.
Sitting here, cringing about your knowledge of chess
There was a video of Bobby Fisher as a kid when he was on "I've Got a Secret", a 1950's game show where celebrities of the time tried to guess your talent or occupation. They sent him to Russia for the first time to play chess.
But, but... mom told me I was smart :]
this episode is a gold mine for r/iamverysmart
I don't know what my IQ is, and I really don't care.
I agree with Link on this. I believe you can´t even check yourself AT ALL. If you make a move that checks you and the other player notices, you have to UNDO your move.
my IQ is..... OVER 9000
a king can move into check and the opponent can announce check when he/she is checking in friendly games
I'm 28 and know nothing about chess and couldn't care less...
Same here but I wouldn't mind learning.
You guys should play a game of chess for good mythical more
Just took two IQ tests. Though, I'm not sure how accurate they are I got a 149 on my first one and a 163 on my second so they're quite different. Btw I'm 15. So not a child genius.
:(
Grammar says 87, just keep hitting that edit button until all those little red lines disappear.
Thanks for the laugh
Branden Rhoades Np.
Viivva Pretty sure "Your grammar says it's 87" is also wrong.
i was just looking at that bear shirt the whole episode. its pretty cool.
I must be very stupid, but what does "IQ" mean?
there is not stupidity about it....admitting not knowing is sign of intelligence :)....IQ = intelligence quotient
someone on a show states that it is the ideot quiz(I know what it really means)
well whatever u prefer to call it
amar roychowdhury oh im not calling it that I just thought it was funny
yeah it is
Link's talking about a stalemate situation where the only move a player has is to put their king into check, but they're not currently checked. This is a stalemate, and nobody wins. It's a clever situation to try and force when you know you can't win.
I'm 13 and my iq is 122 ...
But when I'm 7 (maybe) my iq was 149... Idk why my iq's dropping ... Lol
Gerald Stephanus Did you take an internet test?
Gerald Stephanus, no no no, the internet get's just more complex ;)
Gerald Stephanus To much time in the RUclips comments section...
In all honesty I'm 12 (almost 13) and I have the same IQ
0:28 Sobering!? Uh-oh! Time for another boilermaker. Where's the 100 proof Old Grand Dad?!
I am 14 and i am iq 176:)
Lie
Judging by this sentence, you do not have an IQ of 176.
Albert Einstein, the greatest physicist of all time had an IQ of 172. I don't think a teenager on the internet has a higher than Albert Einstein.
Ozzies4thewin HAHAHA, please don't take online tests seriously AT ALL. I got 6 different i.q's from different websites last year. They aren't constructed in the same way the proffesional ones are.
omg Chase is like "you can't do that it's illegal"
I am ten and I can assure you I will beat you
You should not have a RUclips account at 10
+Faith monahan it's his parents' decision.
+Fernando Peralta What's your rating?
+Fernando Peralta I play chess to and I'm 10 :)
If you have no legal move and you're not in check, or if the same position occurs three times (with a couple of exceptions) or if there is no way a checkmate can occur with the pieces remaining on the board, then the game is a draw. There are a couple of other ways a draw can occur as well.
im a child jenius!!!!!!!1! 299 iq ;)
*genius
jenius LOL
I love how some people thought I was actually serious XD
***** If you knew he was a troll, you wouldn't have said anything about his spelling. :|
"I lost me for a second" 😂
My iq is 135, is that good for a 13 year old?
R Roy :'(
100 is average, 120+ is above average, and 130+ is genius, but the online tests to see how high your IQ is aren't very accurate, I scored a 122 and that's good, but I'm not sure how accurate those tests are, they might be,by all means idk
Harry Kauf online tests are mostly bullshit, and 130+ is very smart, 150+ is genious
R Roy Well we know you are no a genius
Dude, age has nothing to do with Intelligence. Intelligence is kinda like the 'speed' at which you learn. It doesn't change unless you get brain damage.
Make a song about failing at baking (burning, forgetting ingredients, decorating fails)
