GUEST BLADE 1: RJ Martin Q36 & Vandermuelen Intro, borrowed from "The Bob"

  • My first ever video on knives not owned by me personally. I was honored with the opportunity to fondle these two impressive specimens of custom cutlery by Bob, and I wanted to share my raw & frank reaction to them as I saw them for the very first time. Excuse my overly dry hands, but knowing I was going to be handling Damascus knives (that weren't mine), I doused my hands with alcohol to eliminate any oils or moisture from my hands prior to touching these blades.

That is why RJ was one of the makers I studied when I starting making folders, he is a master of the flipper

    Mr Skelton,
'Just a quick word to let you know how very much I enjoy your RUclips knife presentations. You have introduced me to so very many custom makers, most of whom I've researched further on my own. After chewing through dozens of other knife reviews, I think I've settled on a grail knife should I ever be in a position to afford it. I'm quite partial to the Jeff Vandermeulen Mini Intro. Keep up the good work.

Dear Jim sorry if I came off rude! But I was being honest and even offered up my overkill which is the Frame lock version of that RJ. Now you get it... I sold everything else and collect only him and tuff's new Tanic. RJ martin makes the best flipper. You rock for being man enough to admit it by the way!

GTC best flipper action then rj imo. I got to handle Bobs collection at ECCKS it was better than most dealers at the show...seriously. Bobs a great guy and I'm not surprised by his eagerness to share. Best of luck on your quest for a Q36. Thanks for sharing your initial reactions.

  • @JimSkeltonKnives

Everyone has a different approach to this. I will only tip-up carry because I don;t want to change hand position on the knife from draw to deploy. Also, I carry a lot of flippers, I can't have the flipper pushed on by the pocket or pocket seam and half open when I go to reach for it.

Hay Jim if you in Miami check bladeart.com they are located in the Metro Zoo area. Caro is really nice she is the owner and had a bunch of stuff. The website only has about 35% of the inventory she really has she is a 1 person show so I think that's the reason. Email her and she will let you know what she has with photos. Thanks for all the videos.

It's funny to me that you avoided the expression "manufacturer" and went for "maker" to refer to someone who makes custom knives by hand, because the "manu" in "manufacturer" (heck, look at spanish) comes from the latin for hand, and a manufacturer was someone who made things through manual labour, i.e. hand-made. Only in the second half of the 18th century people started calling a manufacturer "someone who employs workers in manufacturing".
