Cool video. I'm glad YT recommended me this. It's very refreshing hearing a younger zoomer perspective on American Psycho. I'm a zillennial, so probably 10 years older than you and I've only read this last year. I'm Yuropean, not American, so keep that in mind as well. I'll try not to ramble too much:
American Psycho shows us a snapshot of late 1980s, the absolute height of American dominance on the world stage. Patrick Bateman belongs to the most privileged caste in history: upper class yuppie WASP from the 80s. He isn't stupid. He knows the world as he knew it is not going to last for much longer, so he feels the pressure of having to live up to these high standards. He might seem rich and successful to us, but he's painfully average in his friends group and thanks to social, technological and economic advances, the rest of the world is slowly keeping up with him and his buddies. We today are much more equal than people were back then. You can check out the data of foreign-born citizens in America. The immigration rate has basically doubled since the 60s when Bateman was born. He was born during the period when the US was pretty much closed off, but just a century earlier the percentage of immigrants was through the roof. Something that's not explicitly stated in the book is that he's 26, meaning just a few years ago he enjoyed the blissful life as an Ivy League student far away from the real world. Now he's inheriting his family's wealth and has to live in the big city being surrounded by immigrants. He fears them because some of them will inevitably make it. They will join the rich people club. They will become his rivals.
This comment is already too long, so I'll cut it short: Patrick Bateman is paranoid of losing his status by birthright. There will be more and more millionaires (a lot of them non-whites) in the near future, meaning he won't be so special. His money is the only thing he's got going for him. He wants social stratification because when you're on top, you have to keep others down in the capitalist system.
Also consider ditching Crime and Punishment. Read the Idiot instead. It's a much better book.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your perspective. What you’re saying reminds me a lot of nativism, and it’s unfortunate but this issue still persists not only in the US but across the world. I’ll definitely look more into what you recommended. The Idiot has been added to my list! Thanks again for your comment 😊🫶
