  • Todays Starlink quietly launched a new section for their website offering a service called Starlink for RVs.
    It's the same equipment as the residential service for $599 + shipping, and the same service cost as the Residential service with portability enabled for $135/mo.
    However, unlike residential with portability service - Starlink for RVs doesn't require a service address, can be used in anywhere in one's home continent, but always at best effort deprioritized service. Also, the service can be paused.

    Hughes had a Pause or Suspend "feature , but you had to call each year on the EXACT day of the day it started. Or they would automatically restart your service and bill you even if you are not set up to use it.
    This kind of shit started when AT&T bought out Direct TV.

    I bit the bullet and paid the premium price. I have an off grid property that only gets 1-2 bars with no data. I was looking at boosters for $400 or so with no guarantee of data actually working. I bought the unit $700 with tax and shipping, the small eave mount, installation kit and a mesh router to expand the coverage. I then also bought the pole mount and a 150’ additional cable. So, now I can easily remove dishy and disconnect the router from the cable and take it with me. My solar generator shows that the router/dishey uses 38 watts to get internet.
    So, yes… I spent about $1000 to get set up for the first month. I will be paying $110 a month instead of $75 for internet BUT I can take it with me to my property or camping for $25 a month additional…If power or internet goes down, I have the satellite connection

    One thing worth noting is exactly why we jumped on ordering starlink for rv, is that out CenturyLink internet is MAX 3mbps. Making it horrible. We are 2 miles down a dirt road the main road is constantly under construction and the line gets cut constantly on top of that. We are waitlisted for residential starlink so literally anything would be better than the torture we go through now. Especially running my hvac business from our home. It’s a nightmare

    What I am really waiting for is the hardware that will allow mounting of the dish on the RV roof. Right now I have my disk permanently mounted on the roof using a Winegard DS-2000 Universal 22-inch Tower Mount. Every time I move the RV I have to go on the roof and put it in a horizontal position. I am sure once in motion is allowed they will come out with some type of hardware that is low profile and does not have gimbaling. From experiments that others have tried it looks like the phased array can handle mounting the antenna flat. I saw pictures of a Starlink antenna mounted on Starship and they will need to mount it flat when they start installing them on aircraft.

      It will be interesting to see if Starlink themselves offers a "mobile / RV-mountable" dish, or if they just license it out to the various makers of portable antenna/dish systems, such as Winegard. I've seen a variety of hacked versions that are mounted in a horizontal / fixed position, but there are a couple of issues with that. The first is that, if you have your RV parked in a shaded area under a tree, you won't have the ability to drag the dish out somewhere in the open to get signal. The second is that, while the phased-array technology will capture satellites within its plane of view, it's not nominal, and you really want that dish to orient itself to the proper view on the horizon in order to give the phased-array the best chance of capture.

    Thanks for the great information. I have had my Starlink service for more than a year. This is obviously the round dishy. We are going full time in our Rv later this summer. My question is has anyone been successful in putting a splice in the cable from the dish to the router? I asked this question thru starlinks support and got the answer that I expected. It’s not recommended. As we move I just didn’t want to mess with a 100’ of cable thru a 3/4” hole. Thanks in advance.

      Our service address in central Texas is still shaded in the darker blue with "Expanding in 2023" noted. However, we just received our dish a week ago. Similar for a friend who is closer to Houston, also in the same shaded area, and he received his a couple of months ago. So it seems they are doing some more detailed evaluation about coverage and density beyond what is shown, and trying to get more users in those areas online.

    Had Hughes net for last year ans half. 100 bucks a month for 30 gb cap that then drops the supposed 25mbs down to 1-3 which actually runs inconsistently around 500kbs. Thinking about canceling my residential pre order been waiting on and getting this. Any thoughts? As other people stated the 5mbp with no cap should be a notable improvement I would think. Welcome to your opinion on it.

      In Seattle?? I've been waiting since Feb 2021 and people in Seattle can get Starlink!!!??? I'm in rural area northwest of Spokane and we've been stuck on 700kbps upload DSL speeds for 10 years now. This upload speed is just killing us. We get 14Mb down, and it works for 4 of us for Netflix/RUclips (with buffering at times), but games or live streaming or even Wifi phone calls are really flakey or don't work at all. I'm assuming you are not actually *in* Seattle or the metro area where they have Comcast or other services available. It's so dang annoying I see so many people getting Starlink and they have options like LTE at home even, I don't even have that!! LIke, I see RUclipsrs say they gave up on Starlink because their Verizon is faster and more reliable! Come on!! Geez. Why Starlink allows them to get anything is really annoying. I think we are just slightly too close to Spokane, but we're around mountains with almost no line of sight to cell towers or Wifi towers and DSL is barely useable. Sorry, not trying to give you a hard time. It's just very frustrating. Anyway, It'll show up one day.... story of my life as internet is concerned though... DSL in Spokane came out in late 90's and we couldn't even get better than ISDN way up to 2004, and still couldn't get Comcast. we seem to perpetually be out of range of the fast stuff.

Since I purchased a mofi 5500 and use my grandfathered Verizon unlimited that is prioritized, I experience download speeds anywhere from 30 mbps to 170 mbps for only $65 per month. Hard to justify doubling the cost. At $99 I had it ordered and they were shipping it but then they announced the increase so I canceled.

I’ve been on the waitlist list for two years now. Getting the RV package makes zero sense to me if I don’t have coverage. Im better off waiting for more satellites to be launched. Just a while ago we heard of the pricing increase partly because of chip shortages. Suddenly they have so many units ready to ship with no waiting? Seems inconsistent to me.
    Perhaps since Tesla’s stock price drop and Elons bout with Twitter they may be trying to generate some cash flow. Just saying. Why would anyone needing service at there home go for the RV package when service is limited at best and unavailable at worst? I’ve waited this long think I can wait a little longer.

    Starlink with portabiliy is going to work for me, as I am in an RV. However, there is a limitation listed that I am unsure about that perhaps you know the answer.
    International Travel: Starlink can only be used within the same continent as the registered Service Address. If you use Starlink in a foreign country for more than two months, you will be required to move your registered service address to your new location or purchase an additional Starlink to maintain service.
    I will be travelling to the US from Canada. So 2 months with portability would work fine, but I'll be staying in the US for 5. Did Elon Musk forget *Starlinks own "first come-first served" moto? 🤨 I ordered the "original" *Starlink service on 4/15/2021 (over a year ago)! Since that time, they have changed the dish, raised the price, added business services, sent *Starlink hardware and service to thousands of Ukrainians, and now they've added an RV service that you can have delivered almost immediately using the same dish, throttled service at a higher price? Where's my dish, Elon? "Come-on-Man"! 🤣

      @@MobileInternetResourceCenter ~ I understand that I can order "the same equipment" (RV/roaming, "throttled" service, at a higher price, etc.) and it will be shipped immediately, however, my comments were directed towards *Starlink/Space-X, why am I still waiting over a year for the "same Equipment" and standard residential service? I don't want to be throttled down to as slow as 5-Mbps based on internet traffic because that's what I have now. That only defeats the entire purpose behind my original *Starlink order 13 months ago! 🤔 My *Starlink account currently reads "Available mid-2022". I'll keep waiting. 🤨

      @@royrobinson4636 the reason you're still waiting for hardware and priority service where you live is because all your neighbors jumped on the service before you (first served). Starlink has a finite capacity in any given location, and they cannot increase capacity at the local level. Capacity is increased on a global scale as they launch more satellites into their constellation. You are not waiting because of Ukrainians or even people in the next state, you're waiting behind people in your town.

      @@Travelers4Good ~ If that were the case, then why can an RV/mobile/roaming user get the same hardware, in the same Town, with similar service tomorrow, while I remain waiting over a year? *Starlink obviously has the hardware and the service to offer to any roaming users tomorrow, but not the people who have been on the wait-list? Could it be the additional $25 RV roaming fee? 🤔

    You pay the highest price but get the lowest priority?

    • @CaliforniaTravelVideos
      @CaliforniaTravelVideos 2 года назад +1

      Good point yet per Starlink's business model, they perceive RVers are willing to pay a premium for mobile service where Starlink can adjust the Quality of Service (throttle/constrain). And at least for now, since Starlink is the only game in town for their unique service offering (compared to mobile cellular providers), as long as they can offer reasonable data transfer speeds Starlink will pick up market share for the RVer target audience. Yet since Starlink must be careful not to overuse their precious/scare facilities for existing rural customers, they must carefully juggle their aggregate customer base. And let's not forget their new cash cow - Starlink Business customers willing to put down a non-subsidized initial investment of $2,500 and $500 per month. Like it or not, it's a clever business model and... stay tuned for more!!!

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  2 года назад +2

      To enable portability like this, they have to reserve some capacity on each cell for transients in the area. Which means not committing capacity to local customers.

    • @lauriemrdjan
      @lauriemrdjan 2 года назад

      @@MobileInternetResourceCenter that is a reasonable explanation for paying the highest rate but not for having the lowest priority, in my mind anyway. Imagine if they had actually talked to RV owners and users to realize that RVs are primarily 12v, and not making us power the device off an inverter. Such waste converting 12v to 110v then back to whatever the dc voltage is of the starlink router.

    • @5thGenNativeTexan
      @5thGenNativeTexan 2 года назад +1

      True, however the reality isn't as bad as it might appear with the current version. Even though the specs say about 100 watts (per hour), many are seeing about one-half to one-third of that. So even though it's not technically optimal via an inverter, you can use small inverter to alleviate some of the overhead and get very decent current pulls.

    Horrible company. It plays people for suckers. Antenna and all hardware should be included as part of the service at no additional charge. Their hardware is clunky and it looks like it was designed in the 80's. Service pause should be prorated. One might add up paying for two months for one week of use.
