Hi, Ex-Sony audio engineer here. ladies and gentlemen, please do not, and under any circumstances, apply silicon lubricant of any kind to Walkmans (any vintage). It is the major cause of the nylon parts to disintegrate overtime. Let alone applying it to the pinch roller and capstan, which will at very least destroy your cassette. Notice the wow and flutter is horrific. For those asking the question how you refit the spring, there is a hole behind the catch, which you can apply tweezers to, to compress the spring, and hold it at the same time. This allows you to place the slide catch over the spring, hold in place whilst you place the back cover back on.
Is there any sort of lubricant to be used on the gears of a walkman? Thanks.
@@dgillies5420 Nope, that's the beauty of the "pom" material, it's self lubricating. If it's oiled, it will just act as a grinding paste and wear out the gear train. Ast...
@@AstonsVintageTechnologyWorkshp Can I ask you something? Why in the world did Sony use a thermoplast over metal on the WM-DD range of center gears? Any engineer from my point of view should know that is a failure waiting to happen, because the softening additives to make the plastic into a thermoplast will dry out over time causing shrinkage and hardening of the plastic. Thus resulting in the famous cracked plastic center gear many Walkman enthusiasts got to know over time.
It is almost as if they made the direct drive Walkman models like tanks that never would wear and some boss came in and said "we need a failure point or else we'll never sell them a new one again".
So yeah, what is the real reason for the poor design of that WM-DD range center gears? Also what was the true intention of in fact choosing to use plastic wrapped over metal?
@@LogiForce86 It's a good question indeed, I think because of the design required the clutch to be made of metal there had to be a compromise somewhere, but I fully agree moulding thermoplastic over the metal was a very stupid idea. They could've gone in any one of multiple designs that would've worked fine but as you say they probably thought more about sales than longevity. I personally would've liked to have seen miniature toothed belts which seem to have a lifespan of about 30 years or more if cared for. All the Best from Aston.
Brushing silicone lubricant over the pinch wheel and head is making me cry.
This brought back memories from my job in a Hi Fi shop. This was a common problem with this model. The Sony fix was to make a slightly thicker and stronger belt. They did survive being dropped a little bit better than the first one and it was the first example of a soft touch mechanism which sold it.
When it comes to the case a bit of solvent glues it back together. It welds rather than glues.
Just bought one of these at a car boot sale for 50p, needs a lot of attention but your video has been a great help so far.
Trusts a fantastic price! I've not been to a car boot at all this year, but I am questioning my life choices 😂
Probably the most iconic Walkman ever made ! Even Sony never produced anything as good looking as this model ever again.
I Ioved that Walkman as a kid and was never able to own one. I keep looking for one on eBay every once in a while, they are very sought after,
therefore even for “parts only” ones are Very overpriced.....
Great repair work!
thanks for the video. after watching this I pulled apart the broken one I purchased on ebay. replaced the belts and soldered some wires that were damaged from battery corrosion. now it's playing perfectly. was definitely nervous about it before seeing you do it. also the silicone on the volume dial worked a treat, definitely appreciated that little bit of advice.
That's great news! It's nice to keep these alive. Thanks for taking the time to let me know 🙂
Belts? I've only found one so far. Are there more?
@@1969longshanks no. only one belt. it was a typo
I just picked up one on a whim, and looks like I'll need to change the belt in it. This video was helpful. Thanks!
Good luck with it!
Superb job i tend to use belts listed as being specific to the model often there remade to exact dimensions seen some people have problems with large packs of belts being misshaped. If you do any sony wm31 they have tiny little rubber gromet type spacers if they fall out it works at correct speed till you put thje casing back on spent ages trying to work out why had to open another to see why ,good job your belt was still whole took me ages removing the sticky mess that was once a belt in the wm31.
These are a nightmare to work on, I'm not sure I could do too many of these as a hobby 😂
I have a boom box to sort soon
Great video! I bought one from a carboot sale today for only 3 euros. Belt was completely dry and had same issue as yours. Thank you for the video! I fixed mine while watching your video :) :) Only issue is the eject switch. It will spring back when i put it on but when I assemble the two halves again it stops springing back. Its like the spring either lost its tension or the casing halves are too tight together because if i slightly separate them it springs back ok.
Sounds like you are almost there. Sometimes working is as good as perfect 😂
It's kind of amazing to see how much electronics have changed since the 80s.
Different yet similar in so many ways. I don't think we could afford to make things this mechanical anymore or even have the skills.
How did you put the door switch back on as I put it back in but it doesent click when I close the door. Thanks again for the guide! Got it back up and running!
Not OP, but I've worked on these machines before. I hate to tell you this but somewhere along the way someone probably lost the tiny spring that's supposed to go in the door switch. You might be able to find replacement parts on ebay!
I've been addicted to taking stuff apart since about age 6 and Sonys are the worst.
I bought a CF-450 (with a $1 bid for a cosmetically mint unit...how do you pass that up?)
last year that needed a belt. The back cover came off w/no problem. After that, disassembly proved....
ah....challenging. At least the radio function was outstanding: the Stradivarius of small monoboxes.
They can be rather tricky can't they! I think the worst in my memory was a Toshiba (or was it a Hitachi 🤔) I did a video on a while back. It was super fiddly.
My open slider came without the spring. Turns out the tiny springs used in old GM lock cylinders work perfectly as replacements.
It's nice when you find something that works! I have a coffee machine that's missing an o ring. Three years and I'm still looking for a replacement 😭
@@backofficeshow I thought I was going nuts but your video confirms it: There are two versions of the volume board, yours matches the one in the service manual. Mine appears to be earlier, just the pot (which seems to have gone bad) and two resistors. Otherwise I got mine back to working with the new belt, I just can't change the volume from max. Time to start watching eBay...
Thank you for the great video. It helped me make quick work of a belt replacement on my ancient Sony Walkman II that had been sitting in a cupboard for years. Unfortunately, with the new belt the warble on playback is terrible. I've checked and cleaned the belt path, no debris stuck on any pulleys or the drive motor capstan. I put a drop of silicone lube on the motor shaft. Made sure that the new belt isn't lumpy, is clean and dry and not too tight or loose. The capstan and idler both move freely. The warble has to be coming from the drive motor. I noticed that your Walkman also was pretty warbly when you first played a test tape. Later in the video the warble with the other test tape it seemed to be gone. What did you do to clean it up?
Bob I don't recall find anything other than using it, perhaps day forward and rewind an entire tape a few times to get it broken in
Hello @Bob Atkins I had the same problem with my wm-2 last year. After I tried for ages to get rid of the warbling it would not go away no matter what belt I used. So i decided to order a belt that was specifically made for this walkman from DeckTech and after I installed it the warbling was gone and I had perfect playback sound. Hopefully you can do the same with yours!
You can also try hooking it to the wall or use fresh batteries and just play for 10h sometimes this causes the machine to settle-in and start behaving better ...
Thumbs up for "Walk On Bye" by Isaac Hayes. Gonna re-belt my WM-2, thanks!!
I wish you the best of luck on your rebelt mission!
@@backofficeshow Only because of your informative video will I even attempt it. Knowing about the Mexican Jumping Bean spring in the door latch is a godsend. I'm usually the one who witnesses small items like that leaving the Earth's orbit. You need to keep saving the world by making more great video's. Again, thanks!
Thank you so much, I'll keep trying 😂
This video was great! Would you mind telling me what kind of toolset I would need for repairing this and other sorts of walkman?
A good quality pair of tweezers and decent micro screw driver set would probably be all you need to start
I remember mi father en mi Mother give me a Walkman n°2 for Marie Christmas 1981 👍👍👍❤👍👍 i conserving this object.
hi , what do you use to clean the volume button, because i bought one on ebay , and there are a lot of crackles when i touch this button , thanks
It sounds like the walkman still has A LOT of wow & flutter, hence I notice you were playing voice tapes where it's not so noticeable. Sometimes just playing the walkman for hours (like, 10 hrs) will cause the silicone to spread through the machine and playback will become more consistent. Sometimes it's because the belt is not exactly the right size. The old belt is often stretched, I saw in another video where the guy measured it with 2 pushpins on a piece of wood and picked new belt that was 10% shorter.
Thank you for the video. I accidentally pulled loose some wires when I removed the volume board. Can you post an up close photo of it so I can weld the wires back on?
I was onboard for a great video until 11:09. I was told that singing would not be a part of this video ...
day after my b-day hope you all are good
oh my god you just saved my life! haha thanks!
How so? 😊
@@backofficeshow maybe my life wasnt saved but a cool old walkman was! thanks
Where’d you get the replacement belts? I’m following along with my broken Walkman 2 😂
I think I got a big bag of random belts from Amazon or eBay
@@backofficeshow awesome! Thanks
The wires you detached - did you desolder them??
Brilliant vid as well - subscribed!
how do you put the spring in the eject mechanism, you didnt show us that part
I'd buy that for a dollar!
Hi, light come on
Greetings from Amsterdam!
Hello there! How is your startup Aviato doing? 😁
Alguien sabe cuántos milímetros mide la correa??.??
how the heck did you get the little spring back in. I can't figure it out on mine.
Honestly, I'm struggling to even remember doing this rebuild
What scruedriver you used what size?
Hey thx for this usefull video but I have one question I want to repair my walkman II but I don't know wich size of belt should I buy I want but a lot for once from china but there is size like 3mm 1.1 mm or 0.7mm wich one should I choose
I would advise you look for a selection pack of assorted belts
@@backofficeshow yes I found those packs but it comes witj different selections of width like 3mm or 4mm it has 50 different sizes of length but width is same for all of them
haha, that street hawk tape - one of those read as you listen types... I vaguely remember a star wars one from the same company - turn the page when you hear R2D2 beep
I really wish I still had the books to go with them. It's ashame that kids these days don't have any discrete forms of media cassette or cartridge to use. And as a result these things don't really exist for them.
You use a belt size ?
I got one today for 30 dollars! And i will have to do the same.
Oh I remember this one - fancy pants logic controls. :)
I wish I paid more attention to see if these really are logic controls or if they're just a very fine mechanical controls 🤔
No logic, just good old fashioned mechanical ones
Hey. I want so badly a walkman, bc I have a lot of cassettes. I don’t know what model to buy. In my local fleamarket I find one of this walkman 2, but the condition is “not working “/ “requieres complete repair” for 185 usd. (In my country, vintage and retro audio stuff are so overpriced)
I know that there’s a lot of better options, but I want exactly a model that the cassette can be seen through the slot, should I buy it? Bc I don’t know so well how to find one on ebay, and at least more important, my wallet. I don’t have a lot of budget, thats why I can’t afford those expensive ones like the Sony TPS-L2
Sounds a bit expensive to me. Why not get the most affordable for now?
@@backofficeshow ebay?
I just looked, in the UK there are brand new models for under £30
The WM-F41 / WM-F31 (both are identical) is a great model to consider. Also in the family, WM-F43 / WM-F33 (w/graphic eq), and all WM-41/WM-31 models without the "F" (tape only; no AM/FM). The 1st truly mass-produced model. They completely simplified the internals and it snaps together, only 3 screws on the outside, that's everything! Only a single circuit board, much simpler! Sold for $40 in 1987 which was 33% lower than any previous walkman. They sold several millions (I bought two, maybe three). Has retro-cool looks, was the #1 performer in USA's consumer Reports magazine testing among ~25 models, its sound beat out all the $100 models, even the ones from Sony! Can get a broken one for $20-$40 on ebay. Since it's so simple on the inside, it should not be difficult to replace the belts.
What kind of silicone did you use?
To lubricate? Food grade silicone lubricant spray
@@backofficeshow how about AUTO silicone lubricant spray?
I just want to know why my sony wm-2 drained too much batteries??
Are the battery contacts corroded?
backofficeshow no, it’s nice and clean
Maybe some leaking capacitors
backofficeshow is it possible to get fix??
Open it and look inside
what's up with new intro???
I have e tps-l2 walkman van Sony
Wanna sell?
How much did this cost you?
I don't recall, it may have even been free
@@backofficeshow that’s super lucky if it was free! The ones on eBay always go for really high prices like £60-£70 non working. If you’re lucky though I guess you could get one cheap :)
I'm going to be extra vigilant now! Never know what you will find in a boot sale
@@backofficeshow I know, it’s been so long since I’ve been to one though😅
whats the 24:09 song name?
Not sure exactly, but it's definitely Clayton Thomas. Look up some 'Blood Sweat and Tears' on Spotify
@@backofficeshow thank you
No problem
NIIIICE.
Thanks Craig, it's nice to get it kinda working, but I need to get my boom box tape players working so I can record myself solve test tracks 😁
@@backofficeshow I'll have to get my Pioneer 3 head deck out and send you a mix tape made on it :D
The start of ur videos is the worst for 1am......
