I imagine youtube will auto delete it if i link to it, but its easy enough to find. Kitronik are a UK company, but at least we know now what this sheeting is and should be able to find it in other countries no problem.
The best thing about this video is going to the Amazon link and seeing that the company using your video with their logo in the top left hand corner, lol. You are a beast! By far my favorite RUclipsr, in any space, not just the LED / hack /DIY space. Your voice is perfect for voiceover and your demeanor is laid-back and casual, but still has a hint of excitement at the same time. I want to be more like you when I grow up! (I'm 48 years old now, so things are looking good for that lol) maybe I will run into you at Lowe's or Home Depot someday
Great video Chris. I saw some people commenting about using the included strip with WLED. To me it looks like the RGB LEDs are controlled via those WS2811 chips (the black ICs), so you could definitely use WLED for those, but the white LED looks like non-addressable PWM based control. To use with WLED you would just hook up Di, GND and 12V, but you would unfortunately lose the white LEDs.
Thanks for watching and for the information! That's good to know in case someone simply wanted to use the led strip that it comes with! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. Very much appreciated!
I bought some of these recently based on this video and they work great. They are extremely statically charged however, and attract every hair, pet hair, dust, and dirt particle in the room
Thanks for watching and that's good to know! I wonder if there is any type of spray or product that would help bring the static down? I don't have any pets so hair is a minimum. Thanks for the heads up!
Definitely keep us updated on what the company says! I'll absolutely buy a bunch to deck out my entire office. (Im using a bunch of your previous projects and hopfully new ideas too) I'm hoping they see the potential of that diffuser!
Thanks so much for watching and that's so cool to hear that you've built a few things already! I'll keep you updated on if/when I hear back from them! Thanks!!
@@ChrisMaherDIY The diffuser material would be something that is otherwise relatively available on the open market, because I doubt that this company would have specially commissioned a plastic with its own bespoke chemical componentry. As you say: 'where did they get it from?'. I reckon there would be a simple chemical test to identify what material it is (ie what dissolves it or what colour it burns), then approach suppliers or manufacturers of that product. Just some thoughts. Love your work.
Thanks so much for watching! I'll keep you updated for sure on if they will consider selling separately and I agree. Hopefully larger size sheet as well!
Great video and great find on the diffusion material! Definitely keep us updated if you hear back from the company. Also you should cut that barrel plug and wire that power supply directly to the Wago connectors. Those black and green barrel adapters are really only rated for 4-5 amps and can get quite hot.
Thanks so much for watching and that's a great tip! I'll have to for sure do that when I use that type of power source again. I could easily just use some wago connectors then and honestly that would be a lot easier than using that barrel plug!
I have made similar lights with polypropylene sheets. It can be laser cut as well as laser scored to make folds. it's flexible and comes in many colours too. it's the stuff milk containers are made from. it's also recyclable.
That's a great idea and thanks for letting me know! I'll have to look into that for sure and hopefully try it out! Being recyclable is also a huge plus!
@@ChrisMaherDIY I almost didn't comment because I thought surely you have already tried it since you literally tried everything else, LOL! Thanks for making awesome videos that are full of information, but simple and quick. No fluff. I love it.
Have you tried combining any of the materials you have tested so far? the diffusers in laptop screens are always multiple layers. pull one apart and have a look
have you checked if the led strips are compatible with wled, there are strips that use clock and data that explains the 4 pins wled can use them. If not maybe check whats written on the IC i am curious to know.
I didn't look into it but they very well could be compatible with WLED! Maybe someone who watches the video might know for sure based on the close up shot of the led strips that it comes with. But like IP Man mentioned, the ones that come with it are 12V so there would be a few differences compared to the 5v ones I switched them out for and like you mentioned a stepdown converter would do the trick! Thanks so much for watching!
Great video. Have you compared any of the diffuser sheets you’ve bought with what you can find in a tv panel? I just got a large 50+” sheet for free from a tv heading to the landfill.
I do the same thing. Takes a few minutes to rip one out but some tv's come with 3-4 sheets and a nice piece of acrylic as well. I've made quite a collection since everyone I know gives me their tv's before heading to the trash. They also have a layer of scatter diffusion that works for some pretty trippy lighting effects.
Hi Chris, what are you using for your background videos and music? Love the vibe and wondering if you have a specific go to youtube channel you follow to test out the lighting with?
Thanks so much for watching and glad you like the backgrounds and music! So I dont have a go to but I generally just search for "lofi" music and get a lot of great backgrounds. I also enjoy searching through "8bit Lofi" channels as well. From a music standpoint I do love lofi music but a lot of what I get is coming from a copyright free music subscription. I think most of that music just is listed under chill music. Thanks!
Hello Chris I am Eric from Tennessee I love your channel i watch them constantly. Thank you for all the hard work. What I am curious about is if you ever found this diffuser material for sale
I've heard about the diffuser sheets in tv's being excellent! It does seem like a lot of work but I might have to see if I can get my hands on one to test it out! Thanks for watching!!
That material honestly just looks like 2-5mm thick Vinly. You can get rolls of marine vinyl for pretty cheap. I'm sure you could find some with a glossy side too for more decorative designs.
Thanks so much for watching! Still no update from the company so at this point I dont think they are selling it individually. I'll reach out to them again to see if there if they might have any good news! Otherwise I'll keep looking to see If I can find something similar to this!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Glad you liked the video! I did make a video recently of under cabinet lighting and I highly recommend COB led strips if you just want a great white. ruclips.net/video/9xhz75he0_s/видео.html If you want white and full color options I would recommend these strips: amzn.to/3AWqf1G
@@ChrisMaherDIY id imagine youd be mor elikely to find what you want by asking a general plastic supplier rather than the company that wants to sell their own led products. The self build market is their competition. But a plastic supplier would be happy to be known as a place DIYers can get a supply of led diffuser. I was trying to think what the look of the plastic reminded me of and i could remember. But then it hit me, plastic binders, and binder dividers. They tend to be made from polypropylene. But it would be about finding the same thickness and frosting amount to match the plastic you have. from this product. Which is why i'd say find a polypropylene supplier, and offer to do a video about working with them to find a match to the plastic that comes with this product. Those companies already have peoples who's job it is to help customers find the right plastic, send out samples etc. i'm sure they would be more than happy to help.
no replacement parts that I'm aware of. I'm hoping they might offer the diffuser sheets as a standalone product as I'm not going to be buy 60 dollar lamps just to get some diffuser sheets (even though the diffuser sheets are pretty big that they come with)
The company said they are going to look into possibly releasing the diffuser material separately but that's about the only update I have. I'll let you know if they have any further updated down the road. Otherwise I still have not found anything that works as good as this yet!
Chances are that diffuser is just 0.015 translucent styrene. It is used all the time in the signage industry. It normally comes in large sheets and is incredibly easy to work with. You just need to check into your local sign makers or plastic suppliers.
Thanks so much for the advice! I'll have to look around to see if there is any company like that around me! Good to know there is the potential to buy it in larger sheets to reduce gaps when trying to splice things together! Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah the Govee m1 would work just fine in these. You could also probably use something that only has 30 leds per meter and it would still look good since the diffuser is far enough away from the leds that there should be no hotspots.
How long are those tubes? It gets tricky when your project gets longer than a meter and you are gonna use 100-144pixels/meter or more. Power is a problem. You inject power midway?
Good to hear from you as always and thanks for watching! They are about 86 cm or around 34 inches so they are a nice size! For sure the more pixels the more power. However since the leds are set back from the diffuser, you could easily use led strips that have 30/leds per meter and you would not see any hotspots.
What’s the best diffuser material to get? I have a shop light that is 4 feet long and has clear tubing on it. The hyper tough 7000 lumens, got it from Walmart. I want to diffuse the light. Trying to figure the best solution.
I'm using your design to make custom LED baseboard and am ready to get started but after pricing 1/8" white acrylic at my local Lowes and Home Depot, and considering how big my room is, I've had to put the project on hold temporarily until I can find a more economical diffuser material. Have you heard anything back from the company yet? What would you recommend me to use for the baseboard diffusers with what is available on the market right now?
Unfortunately I have not heard anything back yet. I'll reach out again and see if they get back to me this time with any good news! Yeah acrylic is not cheap especially if you get it in the big sheets but the big sheets is what is going to look the best so you dont have seems every 12 inches like you would if you just buy the squares.
@@ChrisMaherDIY The only big acrylic sheets I can find are white translucency 55%. Is that 55% translucency going to let enough light through or too much through and not diffuse enough? Have you ever used 55% before? I hate to spend a ton of money purchasing it and it either not let enough light through or let too much light through. Thanks.
If anyone has used the 55% translucency acrylic and has any opinions as to whether it lets the proper amount of light through (or too little or too much) I'd really appreciate your input, too.
Hi There. i just the the LEDs backlight of my TV and somehow im having hot spots on all LEDs. All Sheets and polarizers foils are in the right order. i need a better diffusion plastic close to the LEDs becuase the current one is not doing the job (perhaps the new LEDs are brighter, i dont know). do you think i could add some frosted/milky foil on top of the current plastic diffuser to solve the issue? its tought to get a 55 inch polycarbonate, so im thinking of adding layers of flexible and cheap diffuser foils...what you think? any experience on that? thanks
Yeah its unfortunate that so much of what's available on Amazon in the US is not available in other places! I wish there was an easy way to find things that are more widely available :(
@@ChrisMaherDIY I've seen similar in the UK store: "Lacasa LED Floor Lamp 2 Pack, White Light and RGB Colour Changing Corner Floor Lamp with Remote Control, Dimmable Standing Column Lights Atmosphere Lamps for Living Room, 10W, 104CM/41Inch"
just found a supplier in the uk called kitronik, called White Polypropylene Sheet 0.5mm x 1020mm x 720mm There is a video on their page, and the white colour seems to be near enough identical. the sheets that come with this product even look like they might be the same dimensions as those sheets only cut in half. so 1020 x 360mm
@@arunskuviyam yeah, got the sheets. the thinner stuff is fine, and diffuses leds as effectively as this plastic in the video does. i'd bet money its the same stuff. the dimensions look like they just cut the full 102cmx720cm in half. to make this lamp.
@@arunskuviyam oh and i uploaded a video on my channel showing how effective it is. though its shot with my phone so it's not great in the harsh contrast lighting.
I use Dupont Jumper Cables, you can get them with male and female ends to suit and in various lengths, you can find them on eBay/AliExpress. You can use the female end on the header on the ESP, and cut the other connector off and strip a bit of cable to go into the Wago connector.
thanks so much for watching! Ip Man is correct. I'm just soldering wires onto the pins of the board and using heat shrink tubing. I go over a step by step of this in my soldering video. ruclips.net/video/apSz3NXYlx8/видео.html
Thanks for the help!! I used to use the Dupont cables as well and they were very handy! I switched to thicker wires just because the Dupont ones always seem so tiny.
Hello Chris! Amazing video first of all. I have a question though. Should I run it using my TVs USB port?(LG C2 OLED) I have plugged it in, it works fine and helps me turn it on and off with the TV remote (as it is connected to the USB port). I am just concerned about the long term effects on my TV. I have limited the brightness limiter to 500ma.
Thanks again for the comment! I don't think you have anything to worry about in regards to the long term effect on your tv. I think everything should hold up just fine. Nice tv by the way!! Do you love it?!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thank you for your reply! Absolutely love watching your videos on the beautiful panel that the TV has! Happy with the videos and the purchase overall ❤️
@@ChrisMaherDIY As someone who works in supply chain, they almost certainly do not make this material, they just buy it. For many product companies, knowing what materials to combine to create something useful is their "intellectual capital" - they don't actually MAKE the material. They are really just like you except they are mass producing with profit as their primary goal. To tell you their secrets, or even worse sell it to you, would be counter to their goal, as DIYers can make really cool stuff instead of buying it from them. Really, when you think about it, you are one the LAST people they would want to tell! I don't know what your day job is, but you'd make a great product development engineer!

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Nothings wrong with the paper but this material is stronger so you have a lot more things you can make with it vs using only paper. Thanks!
Chris find a chemist that can create this material for you. This I think could be made with epoxy and paint. I made couple of epoxy counter tops and faced this issue, but best thing to do is hire a chemist to find the right proportion.
Hey Chris, could you post the exact email that you used to requested from this company to see if the are willing/able to sell to us just the defuser? I would, and probably known your fan base like myself, would also send them this request.
Like you I have long been searching for a decent LED diffuser, it would be great if they would sell this separately as none of the other options I have tried have been quite right for this.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by pointing to an item instead of searching? Do you mean why do I use arrows/circle graphics instead of pointing to something with my hand?
99% chance they dont produce this (sheet/material) themselves, they just buy it in large sheets and cut it up. No clue how to find what exactly it is, but im preeetty sure you can just buy it in bulk at the manufacturer
Your probably right! I know I've looked locally for something similar to this but no luck finding anything so far. I'll keep looking though! Thanks for the insight!

I want to make a 6x5 ft diffuser ridged canoe for my bike. Do you think this doable? Could you possibly recommend a good material? Thanks
Yo Chris ...look into broken screens from TVs they have diffuser sheets in them ....not sure if u have tried them ..
Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestion! I've never heard of marine vinyl so I'll have to for sure check that out! Thanks!!
Thanks for making this video! Any news on where to find this led diffuser flexible plastic sheet?
Thanks so much for watching! Still no update from the company so at this point I dont think they are selling it individually. I'll reach out to them again to see if there if they might have any good news! Otherwise I'll keep looking to see If I can find something similar to this!
Need to try white Easel paper works great with 60 led/m
Awesome video! Can you provide info towards kitchen cabinet RGB lighting?
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Glad you liked the video! I did make a video recently of under cabinet lighting and I highly recommend COB led strips if you just want a great white. ruclips.net/video/9xhz75he0_s/видео.html
If you want white and full color options I would recommend these strips: amzn.to/3AWqf1G
Hi love your work! Have you ever tried the sheets from an old led tv or monitor screen ?
Regards Kev
I have not but I've heard that its very similar to this and works great! If I ever get my hands on an old tv I'll have to check it out!
Did you ever try and spray that frosted glass stuff on the cheap diffusers for no hot spots??
diffuser holy grail, found!
Thanks so much for watching! It might just be! I'm always looking for other things and still will but as of now this is the best I've found on amazon!
I would def love a few long rolls of the diffuser sheets
I'll let you know if I get a response from the company! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
Hey Chris, great video! I was also wondering what is the song from the intro?
Does this place have replacement parts to buy the defusing layer or you just planning to stock up on lamps?
no replacement parts that I'm aware of. I'm hoping they might offer the diffuser sheets as a standalone product as I'm not going to be buy 60 dollar lamps just to get some diffuser sheets (even though the diffuser sheets are pretty big that they come with)
Hay! Awesome video, wanted to ask if u already found the defusers/filters? & Where i could buy them
The company said they are going to look into possibly releasing the diffuser material separately but that's about the only update I have. I'll let you know if they have any further updated down the road. Otherwise I still have not found anything that works as good as this yet!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks for letting me know! :)
Hello Chirs, awesome idea with the diffuser, if they ever reply to you can you let us know, would love to get my hands on that diffuser as well!!!
I'll for sure let you know! Thanks as always for watching!!
Thanks!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Anytime!
Think you can use govee M1 in these?
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah the Govee m1 would work just fine in these. You could also probably use something that only has 30 leds per meter and it would still look good since the diffuser is far enough away from the leds that there should be no hotspots.
hey how thick is the diffusor material ?
Thanks so much for watching! I think its around 1/16th of an inch!
Nice work
Thanks so much! Glad you liked the video!
All Sheets and polarizers foils are in the right order. i need a better diffusion plastic close to the LEDs becuase the current one is not doing the job (perhaps the new LEDs are brighter, i dont know). do you think i could add some frosted/milky foil on top of the current plastic diffuser to solve the issue? its tought to get a 55 inch polycarbonate, so im thinking of adding layers of flexible and cheap diffuser foils...what you think? any experience on that? thanks
Too bad most of your product ideas and amazon links are not available in Europe, but only in US.
@@PhillPriceUK Thanks for the feedback and good looking out! Hopefully its similar to the one I got and has a similar diffuser!
haha they used your intro and setup instructions as their product video on amazon. incredible find though, keep us posted!
Lol i just saw that! I'll let you know for sure if they say they will sell the material separately!
just found a supplier in the uk called kitronik, called White Polypropylene Sheet 0.5mm x 1020mm x 720mm
There is a video on their page, and the white colour seems to be near enough identical.
the sheets that come with this product even look like they might be the same dimensions as those sheets only cut in half. so 1020 x 360mm
i've just ordered a few sheets so i'll see what they're like.
was that the materiel ? @@ge2719
@@ge2719 Any luck with this ? TIA
@@arunskuviyam yeah, got the sheets. the thinner stuff is fine, and diffuses leds as effectively as this plastic in the video does. i'd bet money its the same stuff. the dimensions look like they just cut the full 102cmx720cm in half. to make this lamp.
@@arunskuviyam oh and i uploaded a video on my channel showing how effective it is. though its shot with my phone so it's not great in the harsh contrast lighting.
where do i find the little pin connectors with the wire stub attached to connect to the ESP32
i think he soldered them on the esp32 and put shrinking tubes on them
I use Dupont Jumper Cables, you can get them with male and female ends to suit and in various lengths, you can find them on eBay/AliExpress.
You got it!
Thanks for the help!! I used to use the Dupont cables as well and they were very handy! I switched to thicker wires just because the Dupont ones always seem so tiny.
1/4(0.25)mm (.010 inch) white ptfe sheet available in sheets as thin as .004"
Hello Chris!
Happy with the videos and the purchase overall ❤️
totally interested
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'll keep you updated if they come out with the material separately!
this makes me want to make one with cheaper materials like can lids and a yard stick or something
Please keep us updated about diffuser material purchase~ 👀
I will for sure! Thanks for watching buddy!
Did the company ever get back to you about selling the diffuser sheets by themselves?
Any update on this material?
Crickets. I'll check back to see if they are still looking into selling the material on its own. Thanks for checking back!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks. I’m torn between using something like this over my whole ceiling with the Govee M1 or a ceiling full of Govee ropes
@@Jonesmarkr thanks so much for taking the time to comment. That makes a lot of sense when you explain it that way! Great to hear insight from someone that knows the business! Thanks for the information and the kind words buddy!
so whats the material? on amazon you see its a PP (Polypropylene) Plastic
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm not sure on the material. You said you found on amazon where it says PP Plastic?
@@ChrisMaherDIY yes maybe PP diffuses ligth very good? But i found out that PP is not very UV resistent so no sunlight should touch it xD
Ahh I see. So maybe in the sun it will get brittle fast and maybe not keep the color?
What was wrong with just using the paper method you used for the baseboard project. It looked just as good
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Nothings wrong with the paper but this material is stronger so you have a lot more things you can make with it vs using only paper. Thanks!
did you end up finding the material?
Thanks for the follow up. So far the company is still just selling it as a lamp and not as a standalone product. So the hunt continues lol!
Chris find a chemist that can create this material for you. This I think could be made with epoxy and paint. I made couple of epoxy counter tops and faced this issue, but best thing to do is hire a chemist to find the right proportion.
Thanks so much for watching and that's a great idea! Thanks! I do want to get into epoxy projects at some point down the road as well!
sign me up for the diffusor sheets as well. please let us know what the companies response is.
That diffuser looks an awful lot like the type of diffuser LCD TV's use.
Yeah they really do! I wonder if they are pretty much the same thing?! Thanks for watching buddy!
Hey Chris, could you post the exact email that you used to requested from this company to see if the are willing/able to sell to us just the defuser? I would, and probably known your fan base like myself, would also send them this request.
Thanks Mark and that's a great idea! Here is the email I sent my question to. No response yet! djljy90@gmail.com Hope you had a great weekend buddy!
Like you I have long been searching for a decent LED diffuser, it would be great if they would sell this separately as none of the other options I have tried have been quite right for this.
I hope they will offer it separately since I cant be buying 60 dollar lamps just to get some diffuser material lol!
Why not point to item instead of that search crap
Pietertje
My bad Chris, I got that damn idea from your ass 😂
what about the led obsession, hope you'll get away from it soon and do something new!
I hope so too! Do you have any suggestions on what you would like to see?!
Pretty much every plastics shop sells that stuff in huge sheets. Maybe try leaving the house instead of looking at Amazon.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I have not had much luck finding anything around me yet but i'll keep looking. Thanks for the advice!
