    I enjoyed more "serious" seasons like Jetman and Timeranger, as well as more unique series like Donbrothers and (to a lesser extent) King-ohger. I'm not asking for it to be constantly dark and dreary, but not having mecha in every episode or having more conflicted team dynamics are ideas that should be respected for the sake of storytelling. Sentai is a long-running franchise, some variety won't hurt anybody.
    I love Sentai for a lot of aesthetic reasons, but to me the aforementioned seasons are ones I enjoy (and even nominally "lighter" ones like Kiramager) because they are not only character focused, but are about character relationships. THAT is what I think is most important about Sentai; team interactions, and ideally some strong villains and rivals.

    Not sure about the other series but I remember Shinkenger to be rather mellow. There is a feeling of sadness in the air which makes sense when you watch the whole series entirely.
    As for sentai being serious, the first thing that comes to mind is the price each member pays for saving the world. In other series, there is always that one other character giving reassurance to the hero about what hes doing which while nice, feels tacked on.
    Its a new different ballgame when we see the consequence of being a sentai team. Loss of personal dreams, job promotion, marriage
    At least thats how I see it.

      Kobayashi as writer mostly focuses on dread rather than a direct threat.
      Dokoku, Daitanix, the Great Erasure, and Z aren’t really active threats but the Rangers still fear them

    You could say Super Sentai was never "dark" like Kamen Rider was, but it was....adult in some themes. I remember Liveman and Jetman being serious but also have comedic moments.
    Donbrothers have its moments.

    I’m a Sentai otaku. I’m an English teacher and for a going away gift from the teachers, as it’s normal for teachers to change schools, they gave me a Sentai encyclopedia book. I talk about Sentai in my classes as the students don’t really watch it and they’re surprised when I talk about how dark earlier Sentai was compared to now. I think it’s okay to have a dark Sentai sometimes but not make it an every year thing.
    I’m even writing my own Sentai series as the 50th anniversary team with history being the motif.

    Recent king-ohger is also serious.
    Making red ranger as a rebel being a fugitve. Also racles character is very pure evil and his type of cha is hard to see in kidshows like sentai. Also king-ohge political plot is so high for childs i think. Also Gira birth origin was pretty dark. That's why king-ohger is more popular between adults rather than their original targets kids.

    I think a serious sentai would actually be GoRanger, because of this: The Black Cross Army destroys 5 places, and each of them has only one survivor, and they turn into the GoRangers. If someone else was in that position, they’d be reasonably traumatized.

    I feel when people want [insert kid's show here] to be more serious, it is usually silly adults pushing their standards on to children. Adults need to realize not everything is made for them and move on if they can't handle something being silly.

    • @Tradefleet96
      @Tradefleet96 День назад +1

      While you aren't neccesarily wrong, in this instance. Some people just might like the tone of some Sentai better than others, so they'd prefer a series be closer to that tone.
      Whether it'll ever happen again is up in the air, but as mentioned in other comments, recent shows like KingOhger or Donbrothers even, proved that they could successfully produce shows with more serious tones from time to time.

    • @izzadk86
      @izzadk86 День назад +1

      the other problem is that all those "silly adults" are usually were once "the kids" that watched the series, imagine if they started from something like Liveman, how many years would that have been. They (we) would have become grown ups and their taste have become more matured, hence why they prefer a more serious/dark series like in Kamen Rider.
      Meanwhile the Super Sentai is still making stories of 10+ y.o.
      So IMO there's no one really at fault here, but people just need someone to blame

    • @productivindoid9069
      @productivindoid9069 5 часов назад +1

      hmm i think it's not silly to want the supposed kids show to be more serious. More serious, a lot of the times, meant having a deeper human story. E.g. Spiderman across the spiderverse, definitely a kids movie, or a family movie, yet it doesn't shy away from serious, heartfelt, and deep themes. While Kamen Rider always dabbled in the realm of 'actual serious stories - with actual mature themes - coupled with R rating' e.g. Kamen Rider Black Sun, Amazons, Shin Kamen Rider (& SKR Prologue) and various V-Cinemas. I think it can also produce the yearly family friendly series, with deeper and more serious themes while also caters to younger audience (which i think Gavv is doing a phenomenal job at the moment). The same thing can be said for Super Sentai. Again, like Spiderman Across Spiderverse, like Samurai Jack, like Avatar the last airbender. Kids show can both be accessible for kids while having deeper and serious themes overall. It has been done numerous times before, and I think moving forward it should be the norm for Tokusatsu, especially Super Sentai which in my opinion, is sorely lacking that serious themes overall

    I’ll never understand why audiences want TV and Film to be dark, gritty or edgy. When they say that, it makes me think they’re embarrassed to watch and question why they’re into that TV show or movie in the first place. While I get the real world is horrible at times, why should media always reflect that. Can’t there be some fun, colour and brightness/light too?

    Rather than calling it "not serious", it's more line the recent Super Sentai is more "cartoon-ish". For example I don't like some fights where they goof around with the enemies, do 1 big punch/kick, final attack. It takes the exciting out of the fights. I know some fights can be a bit funny, like if the enemy have an ice power and everyone is slipping, but they are still trying to fight and not run around like idiots.
    Leave all the cartoony parts outside the fight scenes

  • @AhoyImHarker

    I think some people think about seriousness too simplistically; a series doesn't need to only feature a serious premise and characters to be taken seriously, and many series juggle comedy and seriousness at the same time. What you really need are a good sense of stakes/threat, and for the *characters* to take it seriously, even if it's ridiculous.

    With the 50th anniversary being a few months from now, that would be the perfect time to have a more serious Sentai show for the occasion.
    If they won't do it for a TV show, then hopefully Shin Gorenger is real and we'll get that serious Sentai that way.

  • @YossarianVanDriver
    @YossarianVanDriver День назад

    The definition of "serious" and "kid-friendly" has changed with time, too. Goranger is quite a silly, light-hearted series, but also has scenes of characters being killed with guns, blades or poison gas, which would be considered "serious" nowadays. But on the other hand, even lighter, sillier modern series tend to have more complex character drama than older shows.

  • @klom89
    @klom89 День назад +1

    I don't think Sentai needs to be grimdark or anything, no. If there's one brand that does NOT need the "Shin" treatment, it's Sentai. But, more tension within reason certainly does not hurt. A serious Sentai doesn't have to mean "grimdark." It just needs "a little more going on."
    Kingohger IMO is an example of recent Sentai nailing that tone-balance well despite hiccups here-and-there. It was an excellent story because it was interesting for kids without pandering to them, something its writer outright stated he was aiming for. It has excellent character arcs that were compelling without being complete jokes or hyper-edgy tragedies; despite the subject matter. (Granted, Donbrothers laid some of the groundwork down but was far too wrapped up in its writer's signature tropes to grow beyond its concept) Hell, Shinkenger works for the exact same reason despite its age.

    I have plenty of mixed opinions on Kingohger, but I actually think the conservative Mecha use was one of it's strengths. I adore Sentai, but the episode structure formula can get tiring for a binge session, and the lesser use of the robo really makes it have a massive impact when it shows up

    I thought KingOhger benefited from not doing a mecha scene every week. The story was allowed to develop more naturally and have more interesting conflicts and resolutions (but that’s also just my opinion.)
    I know people in the west have also been clamoring for a more serious/dark Power Rangers season too. I don’t think we’re gonna get anything like “The Umbrella Academy” or “The Boys” for either Super Sentai or Power Rangers, but more serious stories are always appreciated by me.

  • @wannabe41

    Imo, many Super Sentai series are more geared towards younger children and selling merchandise. When special effects and elaborate Sentai suits are more important than quality writing, smooth transitions and character develop, I lose interest. I enjoyed Timeranger the best because of its over arching theme of choosing your own destiny and the last 2 episodes of Timeranger were among the best of any Sentai series. I feel the same way about Ultraman. Blazar was very unique in that the Skard members were slightly older than average and Gento was actually a married man with a child. The episodes often had a very serious tone but there was humor as well. Blazar has been my favorite of the modern Ultraman series.
    That being said, I also enjoyed the more lighthearted Sentai series such as Kakuranger. As long as Sentai doesn’t become just a marketing machine to sell merchandise, I’m okay with it.

    darkness is kinda the wrong way to think of it. even if one character is tragic thats usually enough drama, as for king ohger i look at it as making up for kamen rider sabers perceived flaws cause saber and king ohger feel more related to each other rather then a big sentai or rider series. maybe thats just cause i like how much more like knights these series are and I think after a few years some people will turn onto its side since they are such standouts and different.
    same with how ryuki has a better reputation with fans and is constantly being referenced when coming up with rider shows. so its not really the dark element its the drama- thats why i think. ex aid also isnt as dark as it could be but it is fully dramatic all the way through. at the end of the day the challenge is always- will people like the characters and their struggles? everyones taste is gonna get louder if its not serviced eventually.

    They can be lighthearted as long as it develops our main heroes. However, every character oughta have something to do otherwise, it'll be 1 dimensional. You gotta make something engaging and then go through with it.
    Variety I say. We can have no mech battles while we develop the characters.

    It's so strange to know that there was criticism of King-Ohger because in my social circles I've never seen a Super Sentai series be as popular as it and even have several cosplays. For me it was the best current Super Sentai since ToQGer. And Donbrothers was very popular too. Super Sentai doesn't need to be as serious as Kamen Rider, but this format is definitely stagnant and there is no more innovation in the series as in the past, they brought innovations without changing the style of the series, but it seems that everything has been exhausted and Boonboomger is the biggest proof because she it looks a lot like a series from 2015 to 2019 and I feel like they'll forget about it, just like what happens with series like Kiramager where Yodonna became more popular than the series itself

    I don't think it's impossible to do a serious Sentai show. And I do find that there's nothing wrong with cutting back on mecha fights. I think the problem when it came to kingohger was the long gaps during part 2. Where it was almost like a month with no mecha fights. Personally I would like Sentai mecha fights to be on the same level as Ultraman to help sell the serious vibe. As we never really get a lot of the ground view and terror from below people are experience from the mecha fights. They tend to feel like afterthoughts a lot of the time and don't tend to have the same weight as on the ground fights due to how short they are. You could also do with the monsters themselves being more serious and less silly.

      Yeah, I love a certain fight scene from Kiramager because of the sense of scale! And yeah, a darker tone has been done before and can be done again I feel (from what I've seen from 80s and 90s Sentai villains), although I'm guessing the main obstacle is Toei and Bandai trying to make sure Sentai and Rider don't compete too directly by shifting demographics.
