Amazing to look back on such a slice of history. The world was completely different then, but fascinating that we can press a few buttons and look back on it. Love these films!
Not the same Miss Knapp, as she did not live and work in New York. Florence Knapp was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, United States on October 10, 1873 and died in the same state on January 11, 1988 at the age of 114 years, 93 days. On February 2, 1987, she became the oldest living person in America, following the death of Mary McKinney. On December 27, 1987, she became the oldest verified living person in the world, following the death of Anna Eliza Williams. At the time of her death, she was the oldest person ever from Pennsylvania. Her Pennsylvania longevity record was broken by Sarah Knauss in 1994. Knapp received a teaching certificate after graduating from West Chester Normal School and College in 1884. She taught at elementary school for more than four decades from 1894 until her retirement in 1935. A suffragette, she marched down Philadelphia's Broad Street in 1919 in support of female emancipation. During her retirement, she was active in community affairs, researching and writing papers for the Montgomery County Historical Society. Knapp lived the first 110 years of her life at the stone farmhouse in which she was born. She then moved to a nursing home after breaking a hip. In October 1987, she was honoured by the Pennsylvania legislature after being recognized by Guinness as the oldest person in the United States. A niece described Knapp as "active and independent. She was pretty fiesty at times. She had a sense of humor. . . . When she talked about the suffragette movement, she would say that it was a great victory for women. She was a staunch Democrat - a democratic woman who voted every election until she was 105 or 106." Knapp heralded from a long-lived family - one of her sisters reached the age of 108. grg.org/Gallery/1873Gallery.html#Florence_Knappk
What a fabulous video. I love the school teacher chasing after the girls as they defy her having too much fun, especially in the barrel ride! She's always chasing the girls and waving her umbrella at them!
That bus they all climbed into was remarkable. Obviously a slow driver since they all still had their parasols open at the arrival. They looked like a bunch of swans packed into a tight space, when they all opened their parasols. Very funny.
I love in the beginning how the one girl just climbs right onto the car without the ladder and the teacher seems to reprimand her to use the stairs... "Now ladies, at the count of three I want you all to put up your umbrellas..." Gosh I can't imagine walking around Coney Island wearing those dresses. :)
They're very comfortable dresses, actually. You can do a number of things without worry like running, climbing trees, hiking, riding horses, golfing, softball, etc. A lot of modern day ppl think those dresses are uncomfortable and restricting, but they're really not. Even the corsests were comfortable. I have custom made stays and corsets. I wear them more than I do modern bras.
The early years of the Coney Island amusement parks has always fascinated me. It's a pleasure to watch footage taken during that time. The girls are a hoot and so cute in the sand and surf, and riding the barrel and the Steeplechase Ride. With the number of tracks on the Steeplechase Ride, I would date this video pre-1907, when the ride was rebuilt. Thanks for sharing!
This is beautiful, and tragic. Life isn't like this anymore. Society isn't like this anymore. And, most unfortunately, people aren't like this anymore...
Very cool! I was just going to come back on and say the film could actually have been made up through the 1907 season, but great you were able to find out the actual year.
Loved watching this! I have such fond memories of Coney Island in the 1950's - it was still a great place to have fun. Was that a camel ride in the video? And the car that took them to CI, was the wheel on the right?
it took 3 times watching it, i realized that this is the earliest form of movie location acting. the beach scene it is the one without the stockings who falls in the hole, the ladies are told also not to look at the camera, the camel scene with schoolmarm running after them and hoops with same scolding thing are acts prepared in advance by a director. i did not notice the first two times. these are rich girls and edison was part of the business deal to do this bet it was connections with dads.
For 1905 this is pretty good- pre chaplin, etc., not many films had any sort of "plot" this early on . But one has to sort of wonder - did they need to utilize the first two or three minutes of film of them getting in and then out of the car? Wonder if there was originally more to this film as it ends rather abruptly. It really leaves one wishing for more shots of steeplechase and dreamland! Stuff like the chutes the chutes is missing completely but the swings scene is drawn out. Interesting.
@piniarosa I was on that ride back when i was 8 years old living in Brooklyn. It was really FAST. I wish one of the super parks would bring it back for nostalgia sake It was the best ride at Steeplechase had By 1964 it was torn down forever
@Rollman1 Hi, that's interesting. Good for you! :) Definitely different to a roller-coaster ride. This film is so nice. Great to see this, it's almost like ghosts from the past.
It's difficult for me to imagine the inconvenience of such clothing! Especially in Summer. As a Central Texan I think I would die, or at least pass out, in our daily 100-105 degree temps with so much clothing! Wow, how did people handle this sort of getup? Amazing!
That is why back then women were known to "swoon" and were "delicate". This is Edwardian times. Back in Victorian times they actually wore more (a petticoat, corset, and other "enhancements"
@Amaranth Try learning a little about it before you pass judgements, it isn't that simple. It didn't just happen to Coney or Asbury Park, it happened in Brighton Beach UK as well.
Todd Tepper I wonder if with the changes in our climate being so rapid since the turn of the last century if it was actually less hot or even more hot at that time. In the very least, you kind of hope they’re all wearing reeeeeally thin cottons, right?
And it's influence on society and the world in general. It's very sad, and also nowadays society is too fast paced and technology obsessed whereas in those days things were much simpler and relaxed, especially in small towns and rural areas. I think most people except the poor and impoverished were happier
they were playing lol..... these are technically young people, they may look older. but their on a field trip from school. its almost like they were acting for the camera, putting on a show
@ibtheonlymarktoo I went to Magic Mountain in Valencia last summer after not being there since 1981. What's with the Jet Stream. It seems like they've took the fun out of it.
The Steeplechase card is incorrectly placed. It’s still Dreamland with the Creation ride. Steeplechase begins with the big barrel ride. Great film otherwise and well-preserved.
I have to say in response to you saying I am wrong that "Of course you would say that!!" But you also did say it looks nothing like it used to.... It isn't purely by chance that it looks the way it does now... or is it? I am quite certain that the place looks like it does as do many of the rundown cities because of a certain element.... And it isn't because of the Belgians French or Germans either!
These are some spunky gals! No wonder the Victorians were so shocked by the new generation. So glad to see this, only wish I could hear what they were talking about! Do you know where this school used to be?
A TRUE WINDOW IN TIME.......THESE LONG FORGOTTEN SOULS SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS FOR ALL OF ETERNITY,THOUGH THEY LIVED ANOTHER LIFE IN ANOTHER WORLD IN THE SEA OF TIME COULD THEY HAVE POSSIBLY IMAGINED AT THAT VERY MOMENT THAT IN THE YEAR 2013 THEY WOULD BE WATCHED BY FUTURE GENERATIONS WHO SAUGHT TO LOOK BACK INTO THE PAST....... THEY COULDN'T IMAGINE YOU WOULD EXIST........NOR COULD YOU IMAGINE THEY EXISTED...IT TRULEY WAS....ANOTHER WORLD.
They used a ladder to all climb on board @ :35 sec's., and all risked breaking a leg getting off by jumping @ 2:00. Adventurous Gals indeed. A wonderful old film.
@CountryConcertGirl white dresses were very popular in those days for some reason, look at pictures of young girls from the turn of the century, almost all the dresses were white literally
@redonionsauce I've got swimsuits from this era in my collection. They were wool but it wasn't as heavy as you might assume. However, they were very heavy when wet.
Yes Id like to go back there I was born and raised in Bklyn. near Cony 1954 I m nastagic about old Bklyn.i live in Florida now Id like to show thees ladys how my I-Pod works Will they be impressed?
Coney was known as Sodom by the sea, but single women would visit on the weekend to meet men, thus breaking down Victorian mores. You can read Cheap Amusements by Kathy Peiss as the expert study on the topic.
Thanks for your comments. You have prompted me to do a little more research and I determined that the film was made in 1905.
Just enjoy the video. It's from another era and we're fortunate this has been preserved.
This is truly amazing! I can't believe this rare film has lasted this long! A true piece of history!
The film quality is very good for 1905. This film has survived very well, as very few films from that period have.
Amazing to look back on such a slice of history. The world was completely different then, but fascinating that we can press a few buttons and look back on it. Love these films!
this is so fasinating i never get bored of watching these old clips
The woman who ran that school lived to 114 and died in 1988. Look up Florence Knapp.
Damn - You go, Flo!
Not the same Miss Knapp, as she did not live and work in New York.

Wow, those young ladies were SO fun-loving!

The teacher always wants to whack someone with her umbrella, lol.
The ride at 5:04. Can you imagine the lawsuits today if that kind of ride existed now?
I think you'll find that these girls were actresses, and this was a novelty short.
This is beautiful, and tragic.
Life isn't like this anymore.
Society isn't like this anymore.
And, most unfortunately, people aren't like this anymore...
I love the joy in their faces.
Coney land was still lot's of fun in those days 1905
They were wool suits. My grandfather told me about Coney Island from when he was a boy in the 1900's. Wow.
This was really fun to watch
They looked like they were having a fun time and for me very nostalgic
It's nice to see people having fun and enjoying themselves.
Very cool! I was just going to come back on and say the film could actually have been made up through the 1907 season, but great you were able to find out the actual year.
In 15 years, their skirts would be up to their knees.
Loved watching this! I have such fond memories of Coney Island in the 1950's - it was still a great place to have fun. Was that a camel ride in the video? And the car that took them to CI, was the wheel on the right?

This is so wonderful to watch! I love Edwardian fashion! Thank you!💛
TIMES,PEOPLE,EVENTS,PLACES....GONE....FORGOTTEN...
FOREVER.
I absolutely love how young woman back then actually communicated with their heads up instead of dug deep down into a smart phone!
them jumping out like little birds from the nest . so special . ty
Those houses in Brooklyn they still stand wow
The access to that vehicle was ridiculous 😂😂😅

I would love to know what the Lady (a teacher maybe ?) running back and forth waving her parasol around was saying . Thankyou for uploading this.
Lorri French she wasn't serious. It's a comedy bit.
I like that tank-car that brings them to Coney Island.
@piniarosa I was on that ride back when i was 8 years old living in Brooklyn. It was really FAST. I wish one of the super parks would bring it back for nostalgia sake It was the best ride at Steeplechase had By 1964 it was torn down forever
fantastic footage.. makes you think too.. nobody on that film will be alive today.. make the most of today!
@Rollman1 Hi, that's interesting. Good for you! :) Definitely different to a roller-coaster ride.
This film is so nice. Great to see this, it's almost like ghosts from the past.
Great fun. And not an iPod or cellphone in sight!
It's difficult for me to imagine the inconvenience of such clothing! Especially in Summer. As a Central Texan I think I would die, or at least pass out, in our daily 100-105 degree temps with so much clothing! Wow, how did people handle this sort of getup? Amazing!

What a great look of yesteryear.
Amazing and very well preserved. I'm amazed how proper the ladies look and I'm wondering if that part of the neighborhood is run down in this century.
If time travel was possible I visit 1905 every weekend.
Listen to this w/ Allegria (from the Cirque du Soleil show) playing in the background. It's awesome.
Those girls couldn't walk safely in that NY neighborhood today.
Oh don't be so silly. We all know that that NY neighborhood is safer in today's melting pot than in the exclusivist society of those days.
+jifli I don't think that crime was higher in 1905 than it is today but if you have statistics to back up your statement I would love to see them.
I was being sarcastic. I can't show you those statistics to support my sarcastic comment because they don't exist. Then and now are not comparable.
Townhouses with awnings, the people, streets - all look so nice and uncrowded.
Funny they had a ladder to climb into the omnibus but had to jump down!
The only thing that gives their ages away is that @ 1:50 few of them need assistance disembarking, others simply jump right onto the sidewalk 😌
That touring bus looks like a tank.
the world's first school bus lol....automobile's must have been a rare sight on the roads back then....still mainly horse and carriage days
OMG, in the summer on the beach dressed like that must have been a pain in the ares.
What on earth is that vehicle they rode to the beach in? I've never seen anything like that before!
@Amaranth Try learning a little about it before you pass judgements, it isn't that simple. It didn't just happen to Coney or Asbury Park, it happened in Brighton Beach UK as well.
Great footage. What kind of truck/car is that? Anyone???
Wearing all those clothes in hot New York summer omg
Todd Tepper I wonder if with the changes in our climate being so rapid since the turn of the last century if it was actually less hot or even more hot at that time. In the very least, you kind of hope they’re all wearing reeeeeally thin cottons, right?
Well, it does say 1905 right on the title card, "Boarding School Girls", at the lower left.
I love the horse ride I believe at 7:00. There is no way a fun park could have a ride like that today. It would be too dnagerous.
Great analogy!
And it's influence on society and the world in general. It's very sad, and also nowadays society is too fast paced and technology obsessed whereas in those days things were much simpler and relaxed, especially in small towns and rural areas. I think most people except the poor and impoverished were happier
Copyright strike!
7:37 Hop on, girls! Everyone ride the steam shovel! Perfectly safe!
Typo - I meant is this a studio movie or an outing?
they were playing lol..... these are technically young people, they may look older. but their on a field trip from school. its almost like they were acting for the camera, putting on a show
Cars were a pretty new thing back then - hardly anyone had one yet.
Fashion over function: Note that, although covered from head to toe by their dresses, the girls carry (and sometimes use) parasols.
It probably is, most neighborhoods nowadays in NY are messed up
Impressive they way people dressed back then.
@ibtheonlymarktoo I went to Magic Mountain in Valencia last summer after not being there since 1981. What's with the Jet Stream. It seems like they've took the fun out of it.

A ride on a fake horse (at 6:50) - never even heard of a thing like that. What a weird thing! :)
No it is actually from 1905
@x0x0beeches
Me too, in fact if I could go around wearing those clothes and not be made fun of I literally would wear them
5:14 they would never allow that now! Looks fun...
for some reason I can't help but think that somewhere in that city there will be someone alive that will die on Titanic.
I am weird....
It is like a clown car, how many young ladies can you fit in one car.
That's not a car, that's a TANK!
with parasols
I like how back then it was so tumblr and vintage and aesthetic
Real women with class n integrity, ppl today have much to learn from them
The lady at 5:39 was PISSED!
A TRUE WINDOW IN TIME.......THESE LONG FORGOTTEN SOULS SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS FOR ALL OF ETERNITY,THOUGH THEY LIVED ANOTHER LIFE IN ANOTHER WORLD IN THE SEA OF TIME
COULD THEY HAVE POSSIBLY IMAGINED AT THAT VERY MOMENT THAT IN THE YEAR 2013 THEY WOULD BE WATCHED BY FUTURE GENERATIONS WHO SAUGHT TO LOOK BACK INTO THE PAST.......
THEY COULDN'T IMAGINE YOU WOULD EXIST........NOR COULD YOU IMAGINE THEY EXISTED...IT TRULEY WAS....ANOTHER WORLD.
Jopi Heesters was then 2 years old and he is still alive !
Where did u get this film?
They used a ladder to all climb on board @ :35 sec's., and all risked breaking a leg getting off by jumping @ 2:00. Adventurous Gals indeed. A wonderful old film.
Me hubiera gustado vivir en esa época -la antigua-
Wouldn´t like to meet Miss Knapp in a dark alley lol
@CountryConcertGirl
white dresses were very popular in those days for some reason, look at pictures of young girls from the turn of the century, almost all the dresses were white literally

Wool?!
How pleasant atmosphere it was
Is this a move or an actual outing?
Wow. What an enormous car!!
@1958debs Makes you wonder how they got back in without that ladder.
wow ... a stone age amusement park, before machinery ... the rides were powered by simple gravity .
Yes Id like to go back there I was born and raised in Bklyn. near Cony 1954
I m nastagic about old Bklyn.i live in Florida now Id like to show thees ladys how my I-Pod works Will they be impressed?
You must have some amazing stories then! :)
Wonderful
Actually, come to think of it, there is a modern fashion out nowadays called Lolita Fashion where women still wear clothes inspired by this
To history buffs out there, wasn’t Coney Island thought to be kind of a seedy place for younger women to go to at that time?
It was in its early days. But by the Edwardian era, it had become a much more respectable place.
Coney was known as Sodom by the sea, but single women would visit on the weekend to meet men, thus breaking down Victorian mores. You can read Cheap Amusements by Kathy Peiss as the expert study on the topic.
@@dr.winstonsmith So cool! Thank you!
Yes because we all know that having to fight your way through gangbangers at today's parks a sure sign of "progress"
I agree
