I am an expat and I agree that we have sold this great Island. We gained independence and within a short 50 years we sold our country to the same who thought we would not make it. I studied and worked in South Africa during apartheid and the change under Mr Mandela. One wonders what kind of South Africans are choosing to leave RSA. Yes mostly the previous prejudiced one, the same who supported apartheid. Money talks and my previous dream of coming back home is being sold ….. sad. I see our younger ones are not able to afford their own land…. Desperate sadness. Whoever who authorized these thoughtless sale are just slaves to money, previous colonizers who claim it was always their private land. To our ministers, be leaders, have guts and do what is right. Selling our country! What else do we call it.

As a young father, I've realized that it is still very difficult to have a good and stable life in Mauritius. There is no work life balance thus we somehow feels that we are still living in esclavage Era but in a modern way and so far nothing is being done by any Government to tackle this issue.
I'm sure most of the working parents would agree with me, the working hours must be reviewed from 192hours to at least 128 hours monthly as this will definitely increase workforce/employment and reducing workload on one single person (employer will need more staff and stop exploitation) which will increase productivity. Secondly, implement shift options for people who are willing to start/finish late at work and at the same time improving business continuity for extended hours, encouraging transport to operate till late, encouraging people to go out after normal working hours (e.g. be able to pay a bill, do any applications for utilities or driving license or create a new bank account, do shopping and so on..) and most of applications must be digitalized to avoid people to go to any office physically... These actions will have great impact on traffic as well... less traffic during the day as today.
Also, more facilities to working parents to pickup and drop-off their kids at school and insteading gym or any other playing yards, malls in all corners, Government must also focus on after school and holiday activities under surveillance (for example, swimming, first aid sessions, environmental and sustainability sessions, bricolage sessions, sessions and debates on different working fields to help children from early age to know jobs availability and frame them to different aspects to be able to chose what they want to be in life. By doing these kind of things, we are creating more jobs and to better educate our children, preventing them to get involved in drugs etc / preventing them to stay home on their own while being exposed to all kind of danger etc. and also helping them to become independent and finally improving future lifestyle.
Today not all parents can afford to pay extra fees for a carer to take care of their kids after school and during holidays and all baby stuffs are extremely costly and that's why young married couples doesn't want to have children or for others maybe not more than 1.
In other countries, there are so many facilities such as 1 year of maternity for the mother, facilities at work to pickup and drop-off kids at school, allowance and discount vouchers to buy basic needs for their kids, better education plan and exposure, reduced working hours..., opportunities for young people to rent or buy a house easily and less costly and reasonable price.
Also, young person should be better paid so that they can invest and the salary scale must be reviewed. In Mauritius, it's the contrary you get more money when you become older thus cannot achieve or undertake any project when you are a young adult.....BIG mistake as at that time you will invest in your future
Anyway, there are so many things we can do to improve the day to day lifestyle and minimize stress...

Most inhabitants, are genuinely, hard working, courteous , skillful and can struggle lots with enormous sacrifices. However, genuine, SELFLESS , WISE LEADERSHIP TO EMPHATICALLY WILLING TO SERVE ITS PEOPLE ARE

Mauritius is now at a turning point, young people need to start questioning wtf the government is doing, they need demand for change we can't keep the same people in power for the last 50 year of independence it always been between 3 families and they already fucked up our country, there is development but not for our social wellbeing but for the government and its investors. We need to stop being afraid of confronting them they are small compared to the people instead for working for the people they are working against the people of Mauritius its high time we start opening our eye and take the driving wheel. the government is flooding all of the NHDC kids and poorer areas with as much drugs and possible and says Mauritius is a drug free country. they are the ones selling and distributing it why not fight to decreaminaltion we need a social change asap we need to stop being sheeps and become lions or wolfs.

Very interesting and informative we need people like these speakers to be part of decision makers for big development in Mauritius because they can give valuable advice whether a project will affect the environment or not. Yes they should stop selling Mauritius to foreigners we are too tiny. The question is how do we stop those in power as they are not open to take anyone opinion or advice?
The older generations too felt they were treated like strangers in their own country for example local visitors were denied access to most of the big touristic hotels located along the coast of Mauritius.

Excellent reportage. je suis Mauricien Vivant au Luxembourg. C'est aussi la catastrophe ici. Des luxembourgeois sont aussi obligés d'aller se loger en Allemagne en Belgique ou en France car le foncier est trop cher et le cout de la construction impayable. Le phénomène est mondiale et pas simplement un problème uniquement Mauricien.Ce sont aux gouvernements de légiférer afin d'apporter un soutient à sa population. En France dans certain région on assiste à cette gentrification ( Processus par lequel la population d'un quartier d'une région populaire fait place à une couche sociale plus aisé). La gentrification est un mal qui se retrouve partout à chaque instant dans le temps du développement d'une région d'un pays etc.

Foreign investments and all its external benefits are what all countries strive for, the problem here is that we do have limited lands and it's being reserved exclusively to foreigners (who have the potential to buy ofc) while we need to be satisfied with the meagre leftovers. Why don't they create nice jobs in their own country?
Many real estate agents, mostly South Africans, are selling Mauritius to RETIREES, ie people who have retired from their employment in S.A. to come and live off their retirement money. They are not bringing some kind of highly productive business to MRU. Their Rand is worth Rs 2.50 on average, so they can have a lifestyle that an average Mauritian family cannot afford. House prices are pushed up and what results do you expect? This problem should be tackled as a multi-partisan political project because we know that the Government will shy away from any issues that would reduce cash flow into the country.

Pour les propriétés pieds dans l'eau, inutile de blâmer les IRS scheme qui sont du vol pour les étrangers, dans des zones que personne ne veut. Les gouvernements à Maurice valent ce qu'ils valent mais les irs et pds restent un moyen valable de rentrer des devises étrangères cruciales pour la survie du pays. Les prix des terrains ont double en moins de deux ans , jusqu'a Rs 35000 la toise actuellement et on continue de privilegier les acheteurs etrangers . Super mentalite.
Avec votre langage arrogant , allez dire aux jeunes qui sortent de l'ecole la , qu'ils doivent trouver Rs 3 500 000 pour un cent toises et au moins Rs 2 millions encore pour une simple construction.
Il y a enormement d'argent , le mauricien se tourne vers l'argent de la drogue pour s'en sortir . Rien qu'a voir les saisis quotidiennes , on comprend le desarroi de notre societe. Le nombre de batiments qui se montent et qui ferment quelques temps apres , dit tout sur le blanchiment d'argent.
0n a eu le covid comme avertissement, maintenant il faut une bonne recession, ou une grosse inondation, sans compter le spectre d'une guerre mondiale et vous verrez le naufrage de Maurice .
On n'a rien prevu chez nous , a part se fier aux touristes ou gonfler nos importations pour remplir des shopping malls.
