"I Touch Myself" is a song written and recorded by the Australian rock band Divinyls. It was released in November 1990 as the lead single from their fourth album, diVINYLS, and is a paean to eroticism, orgasm and female masturbation.[3]
The single achieved great success, reaching number four on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 on 18 May 1991; meanwhile in their native country, Australia, the single reached the number one position. The song was written by Divinyls band members Christina Amphlett and Mark McEntee and professional songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. It has since been covered by numerous artists.
In January 2018, as part of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'most Australian' songs of all time, "I Touch Myself" was ranked number 6

Chrissie Amphlett sadly died from breast cancer. As I understand it, this iconic song has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness in her native Australia. Remember girls AND guys to regularly check yourself for suspicious lumps and to please see a doctor if there is anything amiss! Stay safe out there! Much love!

🙌❤️‍🔥 This song was a worldwide SMASH hit in 1990. It’s been covered a lot, and referenced endlessly in popular culture, including iconic SNL sketch Waynes World. I knew you’d enjoy it, partly because of the provocative lyrics but mainly because it’s an irresistibly well formed song! A real jukebox crowd pleaser and a true classic.
Divinyls are a LEGENDARY Australian band with roots going right back to the 70s. Their early rock songs (the biggest hits being Back To The Wall, Science Fiction, Only Lonely) are beyond catchy, and lead singer and co-writer Chrissy Amphlett is the real deal, a tough girl with a powerful husky, sexy rock voice who made her way in the rough pub gigging scene in Sydney. Like Angus Young from another legendary Aussie rock band AC-DC, Chrissy would perform onstage in a school uniform to ramp up the rebel youth image. She came up in a harsh, male dominated scene and stood her ground like few others.
Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, songwriters who wrote Like A virgin (another song that parents would find their kids singing and be like 😨) and also So Emotional for Whitney, Eternal Flame for The Bangles, True Colors for Cyndi… VERY talented writers… Had written the opening lines and chorus of I Touch Myself and when Chrissy Amphlett heard that fraction she decided that she and her band mate Mark McEntee wouldn’t wait for the songwriting team to finish it. Divinyls had a strong history of writing their own hits, so they instead collaborated with the songwriters and wrote it together. Glad they did because it could’ve gone too poppy but, thanks to their heavy involvement, the structure and vibe of the song are very much in keeping with the band’s well established sound.
Chrissy was always a stridently feminist figure, in the 3rd Wave Feminism sense of being very sex positive and using her sex appeal as part of her power, and one incredibly moving part of her story is that she developed Multiple Sclerosis late in life, and when she also got breast cancer she couldn’t receive chemo or radiation treatments for it due to her MS. She passed away in 2013 at just 53 years old. After her passing, her family started a breast cancer awareness campaign called I Touch Myself, transforming this positive song about self pleasuring into an anthem encouraging women to self-examine to check for any irregularities so they could catch breast cancer in time to treat it. The song has been performed as a ballad by multiple Australian female vocalists as a breast cancer research fundraiser, and advertising and production companies donate their talent and resources to make very moving ads to promote awareness, always featuring the song. This is all very close to my heart because I worked on one of the ad campaigns, and also because my mother had MS 💔
Amazing that a fun, provocative and revolutionary song about self love has had a much bigger and more life changing impact. Chrissy is an absolute icon in Australia, and her work is highly respected across the world. There’s even a laneway in Melbourne named after her in remembrance of what an all round legend she was.

@@popcornphilosopher I'm sure that you know the story of how the songwriters met Madonna at her manager Freddy DeMann's birthday party in L.A. in 89 while she was dating Warren Beatty. Stephen Bray was there and introduced them to her by saying "This is Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. They wrote your number one song Like a Virgin." Then Warren Beatty started laughing. Billy said to her "I've always wanted to meet you and I finally got to meet you." Madonna responded by saying "Well now you did." And she and Warren walked away. Billy tells this story to the Professor of Rock in his RUclips video.

Ahh been waiting for a Divinyls reaction from you. Divinyls were an Australian band and had been around for about 10 years already before this song was a huge hit. Before that, they were basically only popular in Australia. The singer Chrissy Amphlett was an amazing performer and a true original.

And Empress mouthing the words during the song at the chorus…did I see you stop a couple time just before ‘I touch myself’ 🤣

Whoo! I remember when this song came out in 1990 and it was so sensuous and empowering. I believe Madonna opened the door to songs like this for women. It’s true it’s a self love song 🎶 .I love Chrissie’s voice. I wish we had more from her but she sadly died from breast cancer.
    Great reaction!

Nah, nothing to do with Madonna. Divinyls had been around years before this. This band played all types of songs and great live rock band. Wish I had seen them live. Songs like Pleasure and Pain, by them from earlier in 80's were great tracks. Most of people in USA seem to only know of them from this track as the video to go with it probably played on MTV thousands of times over as by the change of the decade music videos were massive for music then. Not their best song but a song the masses seem to know about more because of the video on MTV.
Sleeping Beauty, Boys in Town, Pleasure and Pain were great songs by the band from earlier in 80's.
Leader singer was very theatrical. Like a female version of Mick Jagger for a rock band as a performer.

Honestly, it’s a big theme in 80s songs. And think about the way Madonna, Michael , and Prince performed. A lot is self love going on there too. Safe sex was a movement’s back then and was mostly defined by talking openly about contraception. The “grown ups” and conservatives I guess opposed that by promoting abstinence only. Masturbation fell somewhere in between and was definitively still the most taboo thing to discuss. The surgeon general made a statement that masturbation was safe and healthy around this time and the President fired her for it immediately!
