The folks over at Evoluition tools have sent out another great tool for us to test out. This time its a Mag Drill. These things are great when you need the precision of a drill press but in a portable form that can be used at any angle.

NICE! I've eyed mag drills for years but can't justify the cost for my uses. Although you got it free I would say you've earned it.
You have a way of getting people to take a chance on themselves. You are a great teacher.
For cutting fluid FYI I worked as a fitter in the oilfield for several years building platforms and equipment, we always used a few tablespoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid in a 20 oz. water bottle with a pinhole in the top while using mag drills and annular cutters. Worked fine for me, and it cleans up much easier than oil, plus it smells nice. Worth a try anyway, and about the cheapest "cutting fluid" probably ever. (I always sprayed very liberally unlike with oil where you just use a few drops)
Mag drills are fantastic. When I started construction 40 years ago everything was done with hand drills. Now I have 2 Milwaukee battery powered Mag drills on the job site and my crew gets way more work done in a day. I also have the Evolution Saw they are Fantastic. The Annular cutters are what we use all the time they really cut and last a surprising long time.
I bought the Evolution s380cps chopsaw after watching yours and a few others videos on the Evolution saw and I love using it. I'm now in the middle of fabricating my own welding table / work station and definitely want this drill to make fixture hole's on my 1/2 thick steel top. Told my wife what I want the whole family to buy me for Christmas, this Drill !
That is one nice little drill ,the last time i used a mag drill i had to use a 1/2 ton block and tackle to lift it onto the 2 inch plt
i was drilling. It was so big 3 men could not lift it but that was about 25 years ago ,this new one would be a great tool to add to my workshop so thanks John and evolution for the demo .
Very nice drill. You will probably get a lot of use for it. Nice of Evolution tools to send it to you. I think you did a very good demo of the tool.
Thanks 👍
Better than trying to punch a 1" hole!!!!!
Evolution has very attractive toys. Love it. Drill big holes in the table and let the chips fall through. You got a mag drill
they are good and reliable, we built a whole shop frame out of box motorway galvi beams with lazer cut connection plates, really easy to use. (lots of holes!)
WOW that's drilling that big hole into the 1"
Wow! Wish mine neighbor had one.
Thanks Sir
Good review! I'm happy to say that this is the first tool you've shown/built that I don't immediately lust after; just not something I need right now.
But you might need it tomorrow.
Awesome. I just ordered mine yesterday for a welding/fab job that requires big holes thru thick steel. I’m stoked.
How did that work for you?
You can get mt adapters for the annular cutter so you can put them in a drill press/pillar drill if you wanted to use the cutters in that way if your drill has mt sockets
Great video John, glad you got the evolution mag drill and the chop saw too. From all I have seen about them you will be happy with them. Keep up the good work and videos, always enjoy watching you work. Fred
seems like the adjustable base would be very handy for drilling horizontal or upside down. Be difficult to line up, flip a switch and hold the weight of the drill all at once.
Looks like a decent tool though.
Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the video John. I REALLY look forward to your fold-forming video. I am doing some and am interesting in your expert input.
Should be ready for Wednesday.
This drill travel allows you to use a chuck and full length twist drill bit. That is A GAME CHANGER. Most affordable ( for the non pro homeowner shop!) mag drills, when a chuck is installed, leave no room for a full length twist drill. Annular cutters can be used but they don't go smaller than 1/2 inch, so you have to use twist drills for smaller holes. There are adapter kits you can use to eliminate having to use a chuck, but the fact that this drill raises high enough to allow a Jacobs chuck and any short or full length twist drill bit is phenomenal!!!!
not true they go smaller than 1/2"but they have a tendency to brake if you are not careful when you drill
The table you've built for the saws looks like it will be a really nice feture in the shop. To the right of the saws there's probably enough space for a really convenient off cuts bucket.
I'd think the micro adjust feture on a mag drill would be for when you are working on vertical projects as well as when drilling upside down due to the problems with having to line up your drill bit while holding the full weight of the drill.
I really like your tool reviews but they do leave me with the problem that the tool collector in me really wants to go shopping for tools I don't really need as I wouldn't use them enough to be practical. Evolution should really be thinking about becoming a full time sponsor 👍
Very nice video. I just bought one of these good devices. But speed control would be nice
Those T clamps that has the bead at the bottom to we quit mount into a tight fit hold and have a button on the T for quick release . Would hold and release your saws.
Thanks for showing a great tool Sir.
I've been wanting a mag drill for ages, but they sure are pricey! The mag drill is one of those tools that you don't need often, but when you do need one they are absolutely golden. There are quite a few neat ways to make stands for them, and I like the idea of creating something that'd let you 'turn' tenons for gates and the like. Forging tenons might be fun, but it's time-consuming and you often have to tweak things because you're off a hair or two.
So true
Love the dual saw table. Going to build one just like yours. Thank you, from, Australia.
Have fun!
Great point about strapping it down. Someone at a place I used to work at was using one. It kicked back enough to knock it off and, I believe, wrecked his hand, I believe it was.
ouch
Looks like a nice handy tool.
Evolution seems to make some pretty nice tools. Great video John as usual you explain things well .l have used the Milwaukee portomag before and this one seems to have a little more finesse.
That pen is awesome!
Nice tool to have. If I were going to build a stand to make tenons with it as you mentioned, I would consider making a small table that would bolt behind your post vice. If the table your post vice is bolted to has a thick enough top, maybe even thread the holes. I don't think the mag drill would run slow enough to power tap holes, but I have never had to tap a hole, so... But a small table behind the post vice approximately the height of the vice jaws could be useful for other things besides the mag drill.
Hi John,
You can use dawn dish soap mixed with water in a hand sprayer for the big bits works great.
Thanks for all the videos
Great tip!
Nice review. Thank you.
You can buy specialist blades for the Evolution saw. One firm i used to work for purchased one with an additional stainless steel blade for one specific contract.
Love that drill, I would like to get a drill press or mag drill, I have limited space where I forge. This drill would go good on a steel plate somewhere on the table held down when I want to use it. thanks for the review John.
the wall above the workbench looks nice😊
Thanks for noticing.
That’s quite the cool tool!
I like the little oil can it reminds me of a salt or pepper shaker and for those of you who I meant something as the Dave Allen said...This is an interesting video on the Evolution Magnetic Drill
Hello John
Your Video is quite interesting
This mag Drill is very usefull and
Your presentation well Done 👍

Wow that’s awesome!
Thats a great tool 2 have!
"noice"! They keep this up, you'll have every tool you could dream of!!! Glad you're being blessed, a bit of pressure taken off the ole wallet, and that pen is awesome, very nice!
I was thinking of the BDS 825V mag-drill, but my my they are expensive. Who knows, I should consider this one if the price is right. I do not have space for a drill press so that is why I figured a mag-drill would be the ticket. I just need a jaw/clamp to position under the head for small stuff like tong blanks when I don't want to risk punching them.
Why didn't you use the coolant/lubricant reservoir with the annular cutters? You did a disservice to the company!!!
You can get an adapter to use those annular bits in a drill press. They have a weldon shank, and I have a weldon chuck with a morse taper on the back to go into my drill press
Great job with the editing on this video!
Thank you!
I’ve laid out and drilled thousands of holes in I and H beams using one of those.
That pin also slows the cutting fluid to flow and automatically shut off
Excellent video. Just wondered if the mag drill would attach to the side box section of a gate 30mm to 50mm? Would it be enough steel for the drill to magnetize to?
I don't think so. But you could probably clamp some angle to the side to provide a larger surface for the drill
@@BlackBearForge that's a good idea thank you.
Magnetic drills are handy
Smaller drill bits require faster speeds. Is there any provision for changing speeds say for an 1/8" bit?
Not on this particular drill
very nice but cant go as big as an old radial arm drill press but then again they are usually huge and huge horsepower, but mag drills do come in handy no doubt and can do most size holes we would use today even if you are doing historical machine work for riveting or drill flues for steam boilers like I associate with sometimes. of course for the really big stuff they send to a specialty machine shop, or use a waterjet cutter on a gantry not much you cant cut with those if you have time
Great video as always! Hey, John... was wondering if you use the Cold Saw to cut 4140 or any of the other tool steels you use?
I do for annealed steel but not for anything hardened.
If you were to bolt some of that heavy plate to the bench top you would have a permanent place to set the new mag drill so it could do every day duty as a drill press. The plate already has a nice clearance hole drilled in it.
Not a bad idea.
You do have to be careful not to press to hard on certain surfaces like the web on a piece of channel iron it’s never quite flat and I have seen the magnet break loose on more than one occasion and make you think that you broke your wrist in the process,I do wish I had one ay home though it would be nice even though I can usually borough one fro work but we don’t have the 3 jaw chuck setup only the annular bits
Excellent point
Upside down is the best 4 stories in the air.
At my work we use drill wax for lube works really good
Great tip!
My mag drill is heavy enough to sit on my wood bench and drill good sized holes perpendicular to the work surface
Good review of both products. Was just wondering how you intend to cut angles on either saw as thay block each other?.
The abrasive saw doesn't block the angle function on the new saw. Plus I almost never cut angle anyway.
@@BlackBearForge Sorry then must just be the camera angle then .
I'm sorry but the fireman's cross is called the St. Florian cross.
Mag drill is awesome... just dont mess around and put too much pressure while drilling... It tends to hurt when that magnet lets go and the drill whips into your chest or you get wrapped up in it.... ask me how I know. :D
Good advice
Could you not cut a hole in the bench underneath the saw and put a steel box under to catch all the chip,s ?
Specs say minimum plate thickness 3/8”?? Is that due to magnet? I want to drill 1/8 material
Like a laser pointer
I hate abrasive cut of saws (I think I've mentioned that before), nine times out of ten I end up getting a spark in my ear!! HATE THEM!
try ear muffs.
@@mathewritchie I always wear ear plugs, but muffs and/or a new cold saw would definitely keep them out!
To costly for the hobby old man I am,Saw the drill on a you tube video , Looks super great being it travel to the job.I could find it useful but at 69 don't want to invest then someone will show up when the family garage sales all my tooling claim they are priced to high but just wants to by cheep then resale for$$$$
As an old machinist, how does one sharpen those core drills? It looks like it would require a precision tool & cutter grinder whereas twist drills can be hand-held for sharpening.
I have no idea, they are something new for me as well. But I suspect I would pay a sharpening service if they ever need it.
Allows the cutting fluid to flow
Arbor and chuck on mine are qc rejects. Bought direct from company, on Amazon. Huge upset. I was really excited to get it and then whap whap😡
It didn't happen something went wrong with live stream
If you find yourself wondering where to get a transfer punch like he used, these have worked well for me: www.harborfreight.com/28-piece-transfer-punch-set-3577.html Nothing wrong with using a pencil, but this will find center easier and more accurately, so I reach for them first if I can. I've worn out a set in the past, but cheap enough not to worry about it. I've also used a pencil in the hole to help me find the punch mark faster, but rely on the transfer punch mark for actual drilling. The only limitation for a transfer punch is depth of the reference hole. It's not going to do the job matching holes on thin sheet, but something like these saw bases, or other blind holes, they work a treat.
Mag drills are nice, if you deal with large plate goods often enough, but honestly I've never found enough of a need for one to pay what they ask for them. Evolution makes a nice drill for the money, there are others out there that cost a lot more, but they all do the same job, really. I do have their saw, and it is great for when you need a clean accurate angle cut. I hope Evolution continues to give us good tools at a competitive price, and doesn't start cutting corners (no pun intended). They are the new Craftsman IMO, harking back to what Craftsman was in the good old days.
does not have a light huh John
I'm not sure if I have ever used one with a light. But with LEDs being so popular on tools these days it would make sense.
That kind of drill is a nice toy to own, but most can't justify the expense. Besides if a product is adv. on YT I won't buy it.
No doubt that this is a quality and useful product, but I see no reason to want to purchase this product simply because of the crazy and exaggerated price tags on these units regardless of the brand. Some of these units cost 2-3 times as much as my 20" drill press.
Cool rack!
Great review, John. I think I need this mag drill.
Our friend over at Project Farm just put up a video comparing cutting oil... Happy coincidence!
ruclips.net/video/v6QCrV4ZOiU/видео.html
If you're used to Hougen Brand this is going to feel like a piece of s*** it even vibrates when you switch on the magnet
Frustrating that I want to learn about the Evolution mag drill but you read your mail and I'm 7 min in before you even get to the video.
had 2, evolution tools are hobby tools, garbage!!
