  • We can't take to much more. We really need a break from these bumpy bouncy chattery loud roads. They just won't seem to end and with the strong Patagonia winds we are on our last nerve. Maybe, crossing the border from Argentina into Chile in Chile Chico will be a change for the better. At least we are heading back into the Andes Mountains. Oh, but that means norrow winding roads with steep drop offs. Here we go again!
Thanks for watching, we need your support now more than ever!
    Cheers
    Snow and Curt

Puma’s are afraid of humans & so you were quite safe Snow. I watched one in my city that had come down island looking for food & we here in Victoria, BC 🇨🇦 have a lot of what are referred to as city deer. The only problem was it was seen near an elementary school & a major park so the he police got involved until the conservation officers got there. The cougar which is of course another name also used for these cats, ran through people’s yard & around apartment buildings & was eventually cornered in a parking garage where they sedated him & trucked him far up island. I knew to hat they were afraid of adult humans because our island has the largest amount of these cats in the world, so you learn what to do & not to do, but I was still surprised to see it cower & run & hide. They are absolutely beautiful cats, love cats even the big ones😁❤️

The constant wind can play with your nerves and detract from the beauty around but each day north you are a little closer to the heat and still air. As you turn on the switch and your trusty dual turbocharged diesel comes to life each morning, a new destination awaits. Keep your spirits up. Just like the rocky bumpy trails you conquer trekking to glacier lakes, these windy, landslide ready roads are testing you. Soon you will reflect and say, glad that is over.

You definitely know how to see the silver lining, Snow. Poor Curt, bad road surfaces, very steep drops to the lake below, his nerves must have been done. It lies 2 km from the border with Chile, and 8 km from the Chilean town of Chile Chico.

The town you passed in Argentina, just before entering Chile, is called Los Antiguos. I spent about 7 months going back and forth to Chile Chico, 4 weeks there and 1 week home, and it was dreadful. This was back in 2006/07 and on the weekends, we couldn't find a place to eat (not that there were any wonderful eateries during the week). I was on a project in a silver mine called Cerro Bayo, right by the first lake your showed, called Laguna Verde.
Going there we took a different route: We would fly to a Chilean city of Balmaceda, from there immediately cross the border to Argentina and drive 6 hours on a semi-existing dirt road to Los Antiguos and soon after, crossing again into Chile, arriving in Chile Chico.
Going back home was a nightmare. There were two choices: Drive back to Balmaceda but the border would be closed until 8 AM, and the only flight out of Balmaceda left at 10:30 AM. Considering the 6 hour trip there it was not feasible. That caused us to leave Chile Chico in the afternoon, drive to Los Antiguos before the border closed, spend the night there and leave to Balmaceda around 3 AM, because by the time we got there it woulf be 9:30 and the border would be open.
Option two: We could board a ferry that crossed the lake (4 hours) and hope there was no wind because one of my colleagues did that and, as the wind started blowing they had to pull the ferry to the bank, to avoid the big waves, and his crossing took 8 hours. The ferry crossing was terrible any way. the cars and trucks were packd so tightly that we couldn't exit the vehicles if our lives depended on it. We would then drive to Coihaique (or something like that) spend the night and go to Balmaceda in the morning for the flight. Keep in mind that aal that, going or coming, happened after or before a very long flight from/to California.
It was, however, a trip into the past for me, thank you.
