No one ever said being an Korean idol was easy. Starting from predebut, trainees endure endless hours of choreography and vocal training (and sometimes even language and personality training), and pressure from others to succeed. Dieting is almost inevitable, and while some companies grant their trainees the right to date, there is barely any time to, what with studies on top of everything. But all this pales in comparison to the anxiety that probably every trainee has felt when they let the reality that debut is not for everyone sink in. Even after all the hardships, what could remain are wasted youths and dead dreams.
Or, on the other hand, you made it. Congratulations on surmounting the first hurdle. Your bank account isn’t in the red anymore and you got your own Wiki page now. But that also means there is more expected of you. Idols seldom escape the diet treatment, and looks will always remain a factor. What’s new are the demanding schedules and fans, some of them sasaengs who take their passions to an extreme. All idols have their fair share of sob stories to tell, but some really take the cake. Whether it’s coming from humble beginnings or a dysfunctional family or just a stroke of sheer rotten luck, these are the fighters who truly deserve their place now.
Girl’s Day’s Sojin
Growing up in the countryside where residents admonished those who wanted to become a celebrity, Girl’s Day’s leader Sojin ran away from home when she was 20-years-old in order to pursue her dreams. The idol’s parents were against her wanting to become an idol as well, which was also exacerbated after they were victims to a ghost company who promised to train the starlet but ended up scamming them for 2 million won. With nothing but her bags and a note she left in her father’s shoe explaining her decision, she set off to Seoul where she stayed at a friend’s dorm. In order to support herself and her aspirations, Sojin was forced to take up various and often arduous jobs, with everything from being a phone consultant to a server at a pub to factory worker. Ultimately, the Girl’s Day member was able to enroll herself into an academy to learn singing and dancing professionally and join Dream Tea Entertainment, her present label.
Super Junior’s Kyuhyun
Super Junior just would not be Super Junior without their evil maknae (youngest member) Cho Kyuhyun, but that’s the reality that almost happened back in 2007. After a near-fatal car accident, which also involved fellow members Leeteuk, Shindong, and Eunhyuk, and two managers, Kyuhyun was rushed to the hospital where he spent four days in a coma and six days in the ICU. As the member who sustained the most damages with a fractured hip, pneumothorax from broken ribs, and facial bruises and scratches, he had a slim 20 percent chance to live. And, as if the odds were not already against him, his career as a singer almost came to an abrupt halt as well when doctors proposed an operation in which they make an incision in his neck in order to save his damaged lung. Needless to say, the doctors looked for another alternative after his father adamantly refused the procedure. Fans only have Papa Cho to thank for all the ballad songs that Kyuhyun continues to bless us with with his warm voice.

Super Junior's Eunhyuk overcame extreme poverty to get to where he is today. His family didn't even have a bathroom in their home and had to use a public bathroom at a subway station. Example of determination.
Leeteuk is the saddest among all idols. He had to go through all bad things since childhood. Assault, poverty, accident, losing family and almost losing SuJu members. Never thought that when he in army his father would kill his grandparents and suicide leaving the debt to Leeteuk. Despite all misfortune, he still managed to survive. He worked so hard for his happiness.
Indeed he is ANGEL.
I'm not a fan of suju, but when I heard of Leetuek's story, I have nothing but respect for the guy. To come from a disfunctional family and endure such hardships then and now takes incredible mental strength. When I heard that when his father died, he had to pay off all his debts and because of that took so many MC jobs. My heart really aches for him and he deserves so much better. I really hope he's doing well.

Leeteuk has had such a difficult time during his childhood, then becoming the leader thus taking the responsibility of his 14 kids and then loosing three family members he held dearly .. Our Angel leader truly deserves all the joy in this world .. And thankfully, he didn't loose his beloved evil maknae who was on the brink of death.

Im so impressed of Teuk, just imagine how he can be so strong bcos he has been facing huge problems since childhood days even until now in 30s . He even almost commited suicide but he admitted fans' love has dragged him out from it . Imagine how we his fans play big roles in his life , HE LOVES US SO MUCH. Monsta X's Wonho was also very hard working as his mother had to constantly work to support them both and so she was barely there to help him and the reason he wanted to become a singer and k-pop star was that so he could finally support his mother like she had to him. 😢

I think you should add suga from bts : he come from a poor family in daegu and went to seoul on his own, he'd do many jobs wich one was delivery boy, he broke his arm doing that. When he become a trainee et suffer from depression du to... well, some things, and he continue for became the idole he's today

smile, live he had to live with his grandma who were poor because his own parent couldn't afford a live for him so he had to. live with his grandla for 14 years and than he decided to become an idol because it was his grandma which and also to support his family and his younger siblings so they would not live the same life he used to live

I would've included BTS Suga or Min Yoongi as well. I know a lot of people say that he went through what normal idols go through, but I feel like it was a little more than that. He was born into a normal family in Daegu and he really loved rapping. But he had been kicked out by his parents because of their strong opposition. He moved to Seoul and lived in a dirty, uncomfortable apartment while trying to make a living for himself. Working multiple part-time jobs and becoming an underground rapper as well, he even crushed his shoulder due to carrying boxes for a job. But he kept going, making very little money and living without seeing his parents for years. He developed depression, anxiety, social-phobia and many more. But I guess his passion kept him going. He finally found BigHit Entertainment and was accepted in the company. They were still a small and poor company, he would care for the other trainees and give them what he could. Still working part-time jobs to keep himself up and going, people see him as a cold person although he really does care for the people around him. He found a friendship with seven other trainees in 2011, and they trained together. But it wasn't until 2013 they had debuted. However they weren't noticed until they finally had a big hit 2 years later. Things were better, they really were. But he still hadn't heard from his parents at all. Until 2016, the year his family came to his concert. Then I guess the rest is good news:)his family supported him and he was overcoming the obstacles he had suffered.^^that's all I wanted to say, please don't hate on my comment. I just wanted to say that Suga did have a sad past, and that he should be appreciated more. But he's a lot better now, just look at the lyrics for his song "The Last".

i don't know about homeless per se (you could be right, i just don't remember seeing it) but his family was extremely poor and there was a point in his life where he was shuffled off to live with his aunt because his parents couldn't afford to take care of him.

Tiffany deserves everything shes worked for. Lost her mom when she was a teenager, flew halfway around the world when she was still a teenager to a completely new country with a completely different language and a different culture, with no family and a father who wasn't thrilled about it, had to support herself to train for a career that wasn't even guaranteed. On top of all that, shes an amazing person and a humble kind person to boot, happy for her success and I hope she finds happiness in her future!
She really is an angel, I'm glad she's spending time with her family. She really does deserve all the love and goodness in life.
I've watched the KBS documentary "my name is sandara park" all i can say is she deserves all the blessings she's getting now and then .same goes to kimjaejoong they've been through a lot.my respect for this two 🙂

oh my gosh you guys included james lee. if you guys haven't heard, James ended up leaving Royal Pirates. I think he got a couple of tutoring gigs before returning to LA. I think he is currently in LA now. According to his instagram, he still tries to make music here and there. I am sad that he left Royal Pirates but I am also glad that he made the decision to rethink about stuff-

I really applaud Kyu's father. Any parent would've immediately authorized the operation and risk damaging his vocal career, thinking that they were doing the best for their child. When really, Kyu's father put his CHILD'S FEELINGS BEFORE HIS OWN and insisted they find another way. It takes a really strong parent to do that. I know my parents aren't strong and wouldn't do that. And I would've resented for it if they ever did that to me. >:(
Sejeong hasn't succeeded but her story is really sad too.... but imo Jaejoong's one was saddests cuz imagine one day your parents tell u they aren't actually your parents how shocked he had been

So sad it just shows idols worked hard to get to where they are now and their job is not as easy as people may think.
Because this video is about hardship & idols who overcome them I'm going to mention INFINITE they truly my Inspiration & they experience lots of hardship both pre debut & after debut. I'm only going to talk a bit about their pre debut days.
Both Sunggyu & Hoya got kicked out from their house because they wanted to follow their dream.
Hoya lived in the street, dance studio at one point. Hoya also at the age of 15-16 quit school to follow his dream. His dad used to beat him. He traveled from Busan to Seoul to make his dream come true. Both he & Dongwoo met at JYP ent and then they both auditioned for Woollim. Sunggyu is really smart second in his school his family had high expectations of him wanted him to become lawyer or Judge, he traveled to Seoul on his own. When Sunggyu was young he suffered proverty his family went bankrupt his house got taken away & had to live in a Neighbor/family friend house the neighbor son made him feel crap & unwanted. He was ashamed of his circumstances. People including friends keep telling him he won't make it but he proved all of them wrong. Sunggyu also worked at a coffee shop & coincidentally met NELL manager (If you know Sunggyu his a big fan of NELL at the time NELL was one of the artist Woollim had)they talked & the manager recommended him to audition at Woollim. Sunggyu had lots of failed audioned at other company mainly SM (they didn't recognise he potential) He audition at Woollim on the same day he ended up in the hospital but got the call later he passed his audition. Similarly on another day Woohyun was in the hospital when he got a call to audition for Woollim (he was the first Woollim trainee). Like the other two Woohyun parents also didn't agree with his career choice tell they realised his passion for music his family wasn't financially well off either he had to work so many odd job at the age of 15, he even applied for motorcycle license so that he can work part time as a delivery boy for a Chinese restaurant, he also worked as a model for a small shopping mall and many more jobs. He used to go to work straight after school never missed a day or Work or School just so he can pay his own way for a prestige music academy he legs hurt him a lot. He also worked to give money to his parents he didn't want to ask his parent for money because he knows their family financial state. People told Woohyun he won't make it in the entertainment industry that his not good enough when no one believed in him he believed in himself & his determination was stronger. His family suffered from poverty. At a young age Woohyun keeps moving houses from one place to another, moving schools at a very young age he didn't have much stability until his teenage years it also didn't help that both his parent worked consistently he once said he felt lonely growing up he was bullied as well. One of the places he lived was run down house (his brother uploaded a pic of that house on IG few months ago probably remembering the past)had a single bedroom which all his family shared, there was rats and a bathroom outside. It's no secret Woohyun claustrophobic he probably experienced a trauma. He once mentioned when he was young he nearly died when he tried to cross the creek but fell in the water and drowned tell some people saved him(he had so many near-escape experience)His conditions didn't stop him from pursuing his career. Woohyun got accepted to 4 other well known company (one of them YG & I also heard JYP?) but he ended up picking Woollim. Sungyeol family was bankrupt even though he have a famous aunty he didn't want to use family connection (Be mine first win he paid for his family debt) Sungyeol first wanted to become an actor and had failed audition at SM and then he had slight interest on being Idol so decided to go for it. His parent wanted him to be lawyer aswell. Myungsoo mum didn't want her son to be idol either. Dongwoo family wanted him to become a doctor. Most of them broke their parents dream but worked hard as idol to make up for it. Now all their parents are proud and supportive of them. Myungsoo/L, Sungjong & Dongwoo might have good financial state than the others but at some point they had to hardship too when they were trainee at Woollim moving into dorm, training for 16+ hours also money wise even. The members pre debut sold bottles while being trainees at Woollim because they were often broke & wanted to earn extra money. They experience more hardship pre debut & after debut & had othercome them as a group & Individually. I'm just so proud of them.
WELL SAID. that's why i'm so proud of them....... they give us inspirits inspiration

well he was extremely young when he had to stand on his feet to support his family. He auditioned for YG when he was 14. YG was a new company back then. THe ceo agreed to let him audition and he passed. But his trainy years were extremely difficult and many times he planned to quit. But his only support was G Dragon who was also a trainy at taht time, he helped Taeyang along the way. Taeyang also went through some discrimination based on his poor background.

I just love kyuhyun oppa so much...sighs. now that I've said that, wow. I honestly didn't know some of these stories, like dara. and while I knew teukkie oppa's story, my mind just cant seem to grasp the reality of it no matter how often I hear it. and yet he is always our forever smiling angel. well, elf is here so, and whenever he cant find his smile, we'll be here to lend him ours. same goes for the rest of the people. cuz that's what they are, people, like you and me, with human emotions, who just need to take a break from it all sometimes and just...breathe. I just admire them so much, even the ones not mentioned in this video, cuz we all have our shares of hardships to face in life. so thank you and saranghae, because honestly, people like them inspire me....

My mom dad always hit me if i sing songs whereas my cousin, friends ,teachers, uncle and aunty they say i hav a melodious voice so i think that i should steep out of the home but I'm just of 13 yrs and I'm emotionally depressed by my dreams . And i hope when i go to korea people should not judge me as an Indian but accpet my dance , singing , sports and intelligence. I've also tried to get rid of everything by suciding but .... i dont wanna live .
Regina Fernandes You should find an adult that can help you like a teacher. Don't give up on your dreams and keep on striving to achieve them. It really does break my heart to hear that you don't wanna live but always keep your chin up, it's easier said than done but if you keep pushing you'll get through this.

Even though on tv, Bobby looks like a momma's boy, but Bobby is actually a daddy's boy. This has said by Bobby's mother herself. Bobby & his father is very very close, and dad is always spoil his cute son ^^.

Bobby was 15 when he left the states on his own and won smtm3 when he was 19. The scene from WIN where he is skyping with his mom breaks my heart everytime I watch. And the emotions in their song CLIMAX was all about his mom.

just something i thought i should add for james!
he recently quit the band since he discovered about a blood clot in his brain. unable to continue in the band, he moved back to the u.s and got a job as i believe a music teacher- but still continues posting a few songs here and there on soundcloud. as for royal pirates, no one really knows what'll happen to the band. many have assumed they've disbanded or will disband soon, maybe they're on hiatus but no one truly knows except for the members; sooyoon and moon-chul. they're all releasing solo songs at the moment but nothing has been fully announced yet. royal pirates as a whole has had a pretty sad backstory, with their bassist before james- richard, moon-chul's brother- dying in a car accident. but, i'm only here to add on to james' story.
you should surly mention INFINITE' HOYA he has such a hardship life that you can make drama with that...Inever have seen someone as hardworker as him.
Afterschool Kahi def should be part of the list. You can hear her talking about in one variety show but her story is similar to that of girl's day sojin, who both started out a little late. Kahi also said she hadn't spoken to her father in years because of her decision. Another idol is also IU who became famous despite groups dominating the industry. She grew up very poor. Her first live stage was a horrible experience and she had people throw stuff at her but she said it made her appreciate the stuff she has now more.
7:57 Can I just say idk why that's even mentioned there? I hate that people think of being adopted as a bad thing... I was adopted and didn't know until I was 13 but I never once thought of it as a bad thing when I found out. I was thankful to my parents for taking me in and giving me love and opportunities I would have otherwise never had.

He was born in a poor family and his parents were against his dream to become an idol and they stopped supporting him so he went to Seoul. he had depression, self anxiety and social phobia and tried to kill himself or at least wanted to. Some lyrics from his mixtape really hit me "min yoongi is dead(I killed him" "the time I tried to sleep on the bathroom floor"( a reference to suicide. In fact all the bts members had hard pasts but oh well.
Why didn't you mentioned BTS SUGA? He grew up in a poor family, his parents didn't support his aims to become a musician, he was so poor that he had to starve and sold his songs for a few dollars. He struggled as a trainee, had a car accident, which caused his left shoulder fell out and left him in pain. He worried about his future, couldn't pay for school, became depressed, had/has social phobia and an obsessive compulsive disorder. He even attempted suicide.
Nevertheless he always took care of others, even payed his roommate's hospital bill and learn dancing for BTS although he didn't want to.

I'm sure all of these idols work extremely hard and bust their butts off to get where they are (most don't even become idols and waste their youth trying, can't imagine how difficult that is) but these idols on the list and I'm sure others have gone through so much more to become what they are now. You got to respect people like that, no mater if they're idols/celebrities or normal hardworking people
