  • This is a twin-motor foamboard plane I built to try some long-duration flights. It would carry up to 30,000 mAh worth of battery (15 aH in each motor nacelle) and I estimate it would fly 1.5 hours, maybe 2 hours. The wing is 90" (three Armin wing sections, 9" chord) and the fuselage was 70" long. Control by APM and Dragonlink. FPV was 1.3GHz. Landing gear was fiberglass helicopter blades and foam wheels. It flew great....for a moment.
    The main cause of error was my assumption that the plane was past that light pole, having launched my much-faster Ansley Peace Drone on this identical departure path 50+ times. By this time interval the APD would be well past and above the light poles and ready to circle around and put into a loiter until I could put on my FPV goggles. Too bad this time!

    I've built 3 of your Photons in the last few weeks.#3 was built because #2 is now firmly embedded in the top of a very tall tree at the edge of the park, a victim of my failed depth "deception". I shall monitor it's slow disintegration over the summer. My remaining 2 are beautiful flyers all the same. Thanks for the great design and good luck with your next flights.

    Man that's a stinker !
    It's almost like had you aimed at the pole then you'd have missed.
    That makes me a little chicken as I have only a fraction of your experience.
    But you're a real dude to show the bad days as well as the good.

    Ouch. This is what I have my goggles half on when I take off planes. Just a quick nudge once airborne and ready to go! Cool plane, I made a fpv twin that carries a lot of batteries (video on my channel) but never flew for an hour! That's nuts. My fpv goggles would die!

    Sorry Ed, I feel for ya.
    I just did that yesterday with my very first maiden of my very first store bought foam airplane. Ran in to overhead wires 3 times, ripped the landing gear off, ran in to the fence at full speed, Hit second base nose first and now the prop won't turn, motor or transfer case is out of wack. But man, did I have a great time.

    Did the same thing recently with my racing quad (but slow) and not on the maiden (i was actually trying to train my depth perception) and not with a post but with a tree. Fortunately, only two props were damaged but i do get the problem of having thought 'well, this will fit nicely...' and BOOM.

    A similar scenario happened to me and my very first Photon. I wasn't use to the size of the plane and, as you mentioned "depth perception", my depth perception was way off and my Photon was sucked into a rather large bush at full throttle, ha ha ha. Cool looking plane, Ed! Get it repaired and try again. I'd love to see the EA Product video of this plane.

    I distinctly saw that light cluster lean over slightly ... lol ... but, seriously, there just is not enough visual information in the scene to make the call. I fly a 200mm micro quad in the park, line of sight, not fpv, between the trees. I've been trying to find a cue/clue to not crash into the tree trunks even only a few meters away ... not possible, crash more than 50% of the passes.

      ***** What does reflex have to do with roll?

    • @TheRattleSnake3145
      @TheRattleSnake3145 9 лет назад

      ***** Its had reflex (elevons are parallel to the bottom of the airfoil) since the first flight so thats not it, besides, reflex on this plane is effectivley elevator.
      Differential is only relevant when you apply input.
      The hinge line is only relevant when you apply input
      This is doing it in straight flight, when I leave the sticks alone. As well as when I apply some input.
      Im guessing that your not understanding what the plane is doing?

    • @TheRattleSnake3145
      @TheRattleSnake3145 9 лет назад +1

    Ed I'm having an issue. I'm trying to get in to the rc plane hobby for three reasons. 1: I think it'll be fun once I learn to fly and 2: because as strange as it sounds I'm terrified of flying "in an actual plane" 3: I bought a durafly f4u and crashed it. Fortunatlly only the prop broke. I built a smaller version of your Synapse design which looked ugly and failed do to my lack of aircraft building skills. I have 2 40 amp esc's, 2 turnigy D2826/6 2200kv motors, 5 tss-11mga servos, 6x4 props and some 3300mah 45-90c 3s batts. I would like to build a twin engine pusher but have no idea of a design. Which one of your designs would be suited for this setup I have or is it possible for you to desgn something for my power setup? Please help my f4u is collecting much dust 😢

      Great tries, however most people make those mistakes. Try starting with a Cub from horizon hobby, it has SAFE technology, thats what most in the hobby originally learned on. You can find it in your local hobby shop, the best part is the also usually stock parts for it!

      rasheed gregory I don't want to detract from Ed's incredible creativity in all of the designs he has produced (and his construction techniques and skills are awesome) but as an alternate to help you decide, join up at rcgroups.com and look at this thread www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1281056 ... this shows a really easy to build 'trainer type' plane that can be built very cheaply, and will fly on one of the motors you have ... full plans on the thread, videos of it being flown by Russ40 the designer. Just keep the build really simple as he has, as light as you can, and it will float along at a comfortable pace to get your hand in at flying.

      David Smith you learn alot more as well, I remember building a low wing hotliner style plane and balancing it right side up (supposed to do it upside down) and the cg was off by a mile and it was just a pile of foam pieces after about 10 seconds but it was funny as hell to watch and all electronics are still working in other things.
