Baby APD - portable FPV canard design

- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2016
- The venerable Ansley Peace Drone scaled to 66%. Main wingspan 40", canard 20, length 21". This is designed to leverage new power-dense lithium ion batteries by reducing overall size and weight.
All up weight is 600g for LOS, expected to be 750g with FPV gear. Flight duration expected to be 30 minutes with 3.5aH 4s pack, compared with 50 minutes for the standard 60" wingspan APD with 10aH 3s pack and 2200g AUW.
No surprises in the design parameters and construction when compared with the full-size APD - it's just shrunken down! Still a joy to fly. Наука
Miss u sir, please come back with lots of new building techniques
When the challenge is gone there's no coming back that's why I started on gliders 35 years ago
A long awaited new version, thanks Ed. Wish those Titan batteries were available in Australia.
MY favorite foam builder who got me into RC flying years ago, Many thanks!!!!!
Miss your great ideas. Hope all is well.
Miss your content a lot
Anyone know what happened to this guy ? It's been 2 years. Hope all is well for him!!
He's still there, but he comments to a guy called Aerostuff FPV. He's good too with these designs.
Good to see Ed back! Love this concept. Thank you Ed for introducing me to Dollar Tree Foambard and inspiring me with your building techniques.
I do a lot of mountain biking and cross country. I think this thing would be perfect for taking with me in a pack
Where u been man
Another nice plane Ed. Looks like a good winter project I'll be looking forward to building.
Nice idea with the changeable canard and main wing!
"Hey dude, your plane' s going the wrong direction"
"Oh thanks you mentioned it. I'll fix it!"
`thx Ed for another interesting video, cheers Graham.
It's great to see another video from you, Ed! A 66% APD is a very cool idea. I may try my hand at one if I can ever get around to finishing my 100% APD...
Dwight
You have helped me so much man. I love your videos
Very good to see a new video Ed!
I'm new to the hobby and have enjoyed all your videos and have learned a lot!
The Basement Air Force agreed: ED, you are top notch!! p.s. it's getting cold up in Minnesnow-ta
I love it! I have my Apd on the bench for Fall and dark times. It needs definitely a workover. A small version would be a nice extension to the Mama.
Keep on, Ed!
Very awesome. Thanks for sharing your love of RC. I subed to your channel. Your tutorials have inspired my model plane crafting.
Where are yo
awesome Ed !! good man
Awesome! I'm going to build one... Thanks Ed!
I hope everything is OK with you mate :) looking forward to new videos ;)
keep up the good work bro🖒
nice video !
Great channel super plane👍
like always !! good job !! :)
woooo its flying like a jet ^^
Hoping to see another video from you soon!
merry christmas..havent seen yall in a while..been overseas..
blessings doc, doc
great design
try winglets on the canard to prevent spin..just a thought
When will you upload again?
Haven’t seen anything from you in a while. I really enjoyed your vids. I’d love to see a diy foam board vtol project with rth functionality.
Hello Ed. I was wondering why you do not produce more vids. I really enjoyd your work and the way you presented it. Hope you and yours are well. Greetings from The Netherlands
Finished a build with 40" main wing and 20" canard. All up weight was a lot heavier than 600g. The main wing was 361 grams with servo, push rod and horns. The canard was 131 grams so just those takes my weight o 492 grams. With motor, esc, rec and a 1300 3s battery add another 260 grams and of course the fuselage so weight is a lot higher than 600g. Not a big deal. I will up motor, but curious how others found the weight in their builds.
I made a 50% peace drone over a year ago. It comfortably held 2000 mah and flew for 15 minutes. It had excellent flight characteristics too. Ed if you read this, please do an in depth review video for the Titan batteries once you have tested them. I have been on the fence for some time and I really want a reason to get some but I don't want to waste my money if they are bad. Thanks and great video.
Hope everything is well with you!
Saludos amigo, preocupado por su aucencia en el canal.
Built one of these and after some messing around its finally getting there! I mistangly had the CG severely nose heavy and it flew ok but sluggish and was very scary doing rolls, inverted was inmpossible it it would just dive to the ground.
once i got the CG behind the mid point i think it flew better (although it was very windy)
im using a 1100kv motor with 10x6 prop on a 3 cell 2200mah battery, its not fast but it does fly however im sure this isnt very effecient, getting about 7 minutes taking battery down to 11.5v
Ive got a 2200kv motor coming and a 6x5 prop hopefully this will get it cruising along and a nice speed without having to fly almost full throttle.
NICE!
Your next project should be to make an even bigger version that could fly for 30+ minutes and have fpv up to a mile away. That would be cool.
I love my apd. I baby one will great!
very innovative. A little dihedral and/or a small forward vert stab at CG would add a lot of roll stability, as you know... Can you carry-on batteries on a real plane?
Did you get out of the hobby Ed? 😁 Looking forward to seeing what you've been working on lately.
Very nice informative video, Are there any plans or a build video please. Would love to build this.
I love your builds man they kool. I stay in Phoenix also around cave creek. Where do you fly?
Great work Ed, what if any thing do you use to hold in the 2 mm Carbon Shaft inside the Fuselage, I listened to many of your Fuselage builds and that info I haven't found readily available. Best Joe Hunt
Long time no content :-(. Hope you and yours are well. Greetings from Germany.
Are you still outthere? We miss you ideas!!!
Ed, thanks for posting, love the videos. I wanted to see your thoughts on APD vs a blunt nose versa (not sure if you've flown those much) for a best duration / distance platform. Was just about to order a few of those titan packs
This plane is definitely cooler looking
Love your videos. Just getting into this hobby. Can this fly with a 2s battery? I have a lot left over from quads.
Waooo, What days those.
are You OK? missing a lot your vids, regards best to you and family
you r the best :). what flight time you get for fpv with Titan li-ion battery pack?
What wing cord are you using on the main wing and canard, 7 inches?
thanks Great video
Titan batteries WOW! Future is now!
Hi Ed... When you come back with videos?
The boardfoam I was using wont peel off and was so frustrating..I ended up scoring the bending parts with ball hammer(ball side). It worked but took me longer.. Any advice how to deal with unpeelable foam? Thanks and I really appreciate your time sharing your videos..
Do you have video with comparison flight characteristics or other advantages of canard desighn over conventional?
I didn't see the incidence spacer on the baby APD you are holding, have you eliminated it due to having a Clark Y airfoil or did I miss it. I made the 60" APD for a project I'm working on and have enjoyed flying it . Thank you and Thanks for sharing
Hope all is well, haven't seen any new vids in a while
Those lithium ion batteries are getting pretty popular now. Do you think it's going to be the next major advancement in rc electronics? Lipos had their time to shine.
I have a ton of 18650s I've been experimenting with. their drawback is that even the high drain battery's only produce 20a constant per pack. this means you need multiple packs in parallel to maintain more than 20a constant.
I should have mentioned I use a 5" chord for main wing + aileron and a 5" chord for canard.
Any problems with prop catching one's hand on launching?
Are you ever coming back? There's a huge space missing in the community with you not here :( hope nothing serious is going on and you're still enjoying flying 🙏
Ansley love your stuff. Do you reckom this is a good first FPV. I got 2 planes but need some flight time as crashed both FPVRaptor v2 and Opteera really badly. Am a beginner with to bigger eyes I think.
Ed, if you don't mind, where are you getting your colored tape nowadays
I'm building the baby APD and I am so excited. I was wondering if anyone has built this 40" Armin Wing (2X20) without using a spar in the wing? Did it work OK?
Did some of your older videos get deleted?
Hi. I'm building one without the extra 4 inches after the canard. Where is the CG of this plane?
Hi Ed, I'm building the baby apd and have built the wings, both the main 40" wing and the 20" canard with the 5" chord, I built the 2" I.D. tube. The narrative states the fuselage tube is to be 21". How much distance is there supposed to be between the leading edge of the main wing to the trailing edge of the canard? Mine doesn't look the right scale as yours in the video. I'm thinking the chord on the wings is supposed to be less than 5". Can you please help me out? Thanks for what you do for the community.
What type of speed controller used in this plane
Hello, I see you have developed and succesfully flown canard planes. I would like to develop a windfoil based on the same configuration. Reynolds numbers are pretty closed given higher density but also.hugher viscosity that compensates. Speedwise we run up to 25 knt which is around 40 km/h. I see you use fixed forward canard which would be the case for rhe foil, the only difference is the fact that we do not have movable surfaces but we move COG to manoeuver. Can you share/ suggest some wing plan and sections that may work?
what happened to edd??
@experimentalairlines Ed, do you have a Facebook page setup for EA? I've been looking and can't find one.
interesting !
tell me what is the advantage of such an aircraft design?
Where is cg of this plane
how can I get plans for your airplane?
Cg point in50?
Does anybody know where the plans are???
How do you find CG, that and I really want tricycle landing gear, will I have any problem getting it to rotate?
for the APD I believe he calls the cg at about mid point on the fuse. that's what I do and it has worked on.
tricicle gear should not be a problem, but make the the wire for the nose wheel longer so the fuselage is a a slight angle where the front it higher than the back, this gives it lift for it to rotate.
I just built this and after alot of looking around i used a CG calaculator for canard planes. you punch in the canard chord, sweep and half span, same for main wing and then distance between the leading edges of the wing and canard and finaly how mutch static margin (less more pitch stability, more pitch stability i went with 10 because i like twitchy)
This gave me just over 14", I flew mine at 12" (in error) and it was very sluggish but it did fly fine for gentle cruising around. It would not fly upside even with full down elevator.
Mid way would be a good starting point though.
Where are you Ed? What are you up to?
CG on the ansley please
What is CG this airplane
O CG ?
Wing and Canard Chord?
He extended the fuselage 4 more inches for the main wing in a background configuration so I guess both chords are 4 inches...
how to measure CG
Lithium-ion, why are you using that? is it better? cons, pros?
Ope typed to soon. I think I know what batteries I will invest in now.
do some research first. don't just buy any random 18650
Interesting FPV battery with a low discharge rate: 2C - 10C / 7A - 35A. I wonder how long it will last which can be problem with these low C rating lipos. If ESEA has its way over in Europe we'll need stealthy planes like this to quickly get away under cover.
Are you still around?
That's what I am wondering now after not viewing any of his content for several months... I'm starting to get sad now :(
aval1998 , I was honestly hoping your reply was just him commenting about how he didn’t make videos anymore… I hope old Ed is OK
I hope he is too... he's awesome and his build videos helped me build an aircraft thats impressing my engineering college :(

Wow, great aircraft. Sure is a good concept to downsize (you see that with many RC brands like flitetest that miniaturized a good portion of their fleet)
Btw, if you want to reduce the "wing drop" at low airspeed would be to add dihedral or chamber the wing tips like a flitetest aircraft.
Hey Hi!
Just a reminder. You have not uploaded since last 8 months......
What happened to this guy!?!
First!
hello everyone, does anyone know the center of gravity of this model, where exactly?
