I just picked this gaking set yesterday at a used toy store in Tokyo. I grew up in Japan during the giant robot craze (72-79). My father was stationed in Tachikawa airbase (now closed there is a park and IKEA there now). I couldn’t run home fast enough from baseball practice to watch my shows. Way back when the cartoons aired from 6pm until 8pm everyday. Unlike the states, there were no Saturday morning cartoons. The Saturday Sunday morning slots were news, talk shows and dramas. Due to the child culture of japan being very active. You are either studying for exams (school was six days a week most took extra courses on Sunday). Being on a sport team was also big, school spirit and participation from baseball, kendo, judo, karate, tennis, basketball and soccer where the training was almost Spartan, Took precedence over any other extra curricular activity. Our cartoons were an escape for a few hours. I had (still have) a ton of the Poppy toys, what I never like as a child was lack of articulation. It feel like I was playing with a statue (that’s why I preferred my microman toys a bit more). These show were basically generated for toy sales. I watch the now and laugh at the cheesy plots but still love them with great nostalgia. As for current Japanese animation I’m not a fan. I can count on my one hand how may I have enjoyed over the past 20yrs. I have moved on to collecting the new Chogokin series I love them. I have only brought my favorites I grew up with. Grendizer, Getter Robo G, Raideen, Combattler V and a few 80’s robot’s Such as god mars, layzaner, Tryder G-7, Daltanious, and Machender Robo. Of course I have collections of other series as well. I have subscribed to you channel for support. Keep the videos coming and good luck. I moved back to japan and I’m loving it, I came home with this big ass box the look on my wife’s face was shock, then she busted up in hysterical laughter. Now I can’t go shopping without her. All I was supposed to do was get a few fruits and vegetables. The cost I couldn’t turn it down $135 bucks in U.S. dollars.
Gaiking is one of the coolest super robots and I'm glad a set of this magnitude was made. I'd like to see the Gaiking figure itself dropped in the Super Robot Chogokin line but I understand they probably won't do it.
Man super glad you made this vid I was intimidated because the instructions weren't English and was just gonna leave it in the box but watching your video helped me get it unboxed now I have it sitting next to voltron like there gonna fight lol
That's a badass figure my man. I would of flipped the fuck out, if I ever received that as a Christmas, or birthday gift when I was a kid. I had some cool toys don't get me wrong, but that figure would of been amazing to have. I grew up in the late seventies into the eighties, & I had some toys at the time, that where called Shogun Warriors. They were chogokin from Japan, licensed by Mattel. What's crazy is, that toy line got discontinued in 1980, which was the same year an individual by the name Jim Terry brought chogokin anime to the States. There were five different chogokin series that he had English dubbed, & Gaiking was one of them. Jim Terry named the show Force Five. That consisted of Gaiking, Starvengers, Grandizer, Dangaurd Ace, & The Spaceketeers. Each one those series had a designated day of the week. It was also only shown in certain regions of the country. I would think, that the Shogun Warriors toy line would of been a bigger seller after that show was released, but will never know. Star Wars is what killed off the Shogun Warriors. I currently own 4 of the Force Five series on DVD. Everything but Spaceketeers. I actually have additional Grandizer episodes that are English dubbed, which weren't included in the original Force Five series. Now that you own that figure, you'll definitely have to check out the Force Five version of Gaiking. That's if you can find it. I'm tempted to buy that figure myself. I also own a Grandizer, or Grendizer set of figures, that's similar to the Gaiking set that you have. They would look beyond cool on a table together. Sayonara!
I watched this show as a kid so I was so stoked to find him at 46% off at Amazon Japan! I was gonna say you’ve got to extend Gaiking’s legs but somebody already mentioned it 😅
its crazy 2 say but, the only reason i wouldnt buy it is because of its size, it would occupy so much space just for one thing, i couldnt afford that, only reason cuz otherwise this is a masterpiece
Out of town this weekend, but I will check when I get back. I'll say that it is fairly flexible, since I was also moving it around to fit in a display area.
It definitely could be displayed unassembled (if you have enough room to mount it on a wall or something). I'm not an expert on vintage Chogokin, but I suspect it may be a callback to some older packaging.
I don't have any relationships with any particular sites, but entertainment earth or amiami would probably be your best bet. Ami is gonna kill you on shipping (~150-200), but the overall price will likely be less than any of the US sites. Just make sure you have a credit card that doesn't charge you for using foreign currency.

I would love to see a revival of the super robot chogokin line or at least some sub line of soul of chogokin for the not as crazy deluxe stuff.
Such a beautiful collectible!!!!!! I’m waiting for mine to arrive!
That's awesome. Hope you enjoy it!

So in other words it is worth pulling the trigger on this thing, at the current price point of 6 to 700.00?
You forgot to extend Gaiking's legs

Update: Looks so much cooler with the legs extended. Thanks!

I've been slowly working my way through super robot stuff I have never seen, and Gaiking is definitely on that list!
Just in my childhood

This is a monster of a set
And in true Bandai fashion, your 700 dollar figure isn't complete without the 200 dollar effect part set!
@@chroniclesincollecting3859where can you get that? Dont see it anywhere. I mean the bonus set
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Cool review AAA+++++
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching!

Can you tell me how flexible the tail is when moving from side to side? Trying to see how flexible it is so I can get it in a display case...cheers

that packaging is intense. meant to be displayable unassembled as well?
