I've never watched a Ren video that went on too long. 9 minutes, 13... doesn't matter. They all seem to go by so quickly.

IMHO the Tale of Jenny and Screech is a Three Act Shakespearian Tragedy, in the style of the wondering minstrel bard. The music acted in part as interlude/intro as well as melodic emphasis and sound effects. Also I think you spotted Ren's use of locational reverb in the sound engineering. They also got lucky with the Seagulls in part of the song which then was deliberately left in and emphasized in the mix. All of that indicates the intellectual level of the performance production in this piece of art.

Loved your reaction, and I'm so glad you watched it. I figured you'd find the music a bit simple, but the storytelling stellar. Throughout the trilogy, I think Ren uses "mistakes" to engage the listener. Even the coughing and heavy breathing emphasize the feeling that you're right there with a bard who's telling you a story. The "errors" make it feel real. After the guitar intro, when Ren takes a second to shake himself as Violet's Tale starts, it seems like the bard is preparing himself for the tale to come. The way he articulates "London City, far from pretty, 2-0-0-5" in cadence and intensity as the song progresses takes you from hearing a story to hearing a guy who is angry about the story he's telling. It's these little details that make me think that none of the off notes/pitches/diegetic sounds are "mistakes." Basically, masterful storytelling. You just get lulled into the experience.
(I think the videography of Ren's video, "Murderer" does the same thing. So many people debate whether there are any cuts, when it's irrelevant. Whether there are any cuts or not, you feel like you're walking alongside the self-proclaimed Murderer as he goes about his day. You're pulled in, and right there with the narrator. Great storytelling.)

When he shakes himself after getting out of the bed is one of my favorite moments. It stuck out the first time I saw it and find myself waiting for it. Something so small. Flawless.

This young man is original in the true meaning of the word. He kicks you in the face with reality, the reality some people have to face each day. Certainly had my full attention from the get go. He is a multi talented musician, singer, story teller, lyricist, artist, composer............................

Ren's self-taught on guitar! He learned by slowing down RUclips videos of his favourite guitarists and trying to coqy what they did. He plays about a dozen instruments and he's self-taught on all of them! :)

Ren is a Jack of all Trades and Master of them all! Such a tragic but perfectly presented story. Really enjoyed the fact you acknowledged his talent.

(The second section reminds me of Brecht/Weill)
Interesting how you were able to stay in place with the story even in English. He is a master at moving between different characters, and from narrated sections into those different voices. It seems completely natural to him to leap between different perspectives. And he makes us do the same thing.

    Subtitles are -
    a) fine to use!
    and
    b) an ACCESSIBILITY tool, and NO ONE should have to state the reason why they choose to turn them on, or state the reason why they might *need* them, in order to make use of them, just to placate ableist commentors on RUclips
    and
    c) people who use subtitles are well aware that they can be super crappy, but they can still choose to use them ANYWAYS and that's VALID.
However, if you're finding the subtitles frustratingly inadequate, Ren has typed out and pinned the lyrics for most of his songs in the comments under each song's video, if you'd like to use that to follow along with instead of hoping the subtitles are well-done ;)
    Welcome to the Reniverse! ♥

So i have zero experience playing any type of guitar but I imagine it would be a little difficult that part at the start of Screechs Tale and hes walking down the stairs? Or is that actually much easier than it seems?

I think people got freaked about subtitles because they were really bad for hi ren, but I remembered them being quite good for these videos.
When there’s a twist ending tho… you might risk spoiling it a bit ;)

    • @rockyroad64

History repeats itself. The sickness passed down to the next generation. Jenny was like her mom and Screech was like the father, even though they weren't raised by their biological parents. Such a shame.😔

You made a mistake using subtitles. They aren't needed and offer only a distraction.

    • @ginjamutha
      @ginjamutha 11 месяцев назад +11

Just because you don’t use subtitles and you find them a distraction, that doesn’t mean that every other person on this planet is the same. English is my first language but I often watch films and tv shows with subtitles on to make sure I don’t miss anything. I have trouble with attention and concentration and the subtitles help me focus. Some people’s brains just work like that. It’s no big deal. Peace.

2nd language.... I speak German and my English is good, but it helps for non-native speakers to pick everything up. He is a poet and uses words that are not used often and he goes fast at some point. But why do you care about how someone watches this? In my opinion, this is absurd, because you have listened to this song several times I would assume ... ;-)
