Its hard for a sister of a famous sister to become a star. Dee Dee wasn't pop and Dionne was and her voice was more soulful and stronger and of course her look wasn't what the music world thought could sell. I love me some Dee Dee Warwick and she was my star.
Her look was far better than Dionne’s, let’s face it Dionne was not what you would call pretty. I think the stars didn’t line up for Dee Dee, must of been frustrating for her
Yea like the comment above said her look wasn’t the issue a lot of singers lien Shirley brown and Aretha had a similar body type to dee dee it was her sexuality and mental illness that bothered record labels and made them not give her the proper advertisement or backing she deserved
@@paulaallen2042 legendary British connoisseur the late Dave Godwin years ago stated in his column( black music) he cant understand why they gave the uglier sister the push. Dionne came to the UK in the earlier part of 2000's while performing on the stage she mustve notice most the audience eyes were looking past her especially the males that's when she realised that they more focus on her back up singer, she then introduced her sister Dee Dee, there was an immediate loud rapture from the audience, she looked darned good she was glittering, a few months later I heard of her death.
Her voice is more rich. Deeper in a meaningful sense, and more complex and than her sister Dionne. and even Cissy. Her voice cuts you deeper, it is more soulful.
On October 18, 2008, a tragedy occurred! At the age of 66, Dee Dee Warwick died in a nursing home in Essex County, New Jersey with big sister Dionne by her side! Rest in Peace, Sweet Dee Dee!
@Me X Actually, she had the desire, and was a professional singer. She sang with the Shirelles for a spell, and Dionne even replaced her in the group, briefly. What you mean is did she have the desire to "remain" a professional singer. Sometimes the industry is not what people expect, it can change, or their priorities change. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
@Me X Was that in an interview? I read a brief bio on her which indicated that she was bounced between several labels, and mentioned that she had to compete against the likes of Aretha Franklin. She was recording but she said the songs weren't being promoted hard enough. She spent her later years singing background for her sister Dionne, during live concerts. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
renaissanceman165 The interview was back in ‘01 I believe and she said she never wanted to be a singer, but was pushed into singing because she came from a family of singers. she said she wanted to be a doctor.
“Dee Dee was openly lesbian in the music industry,” one anonymous source close to the Warrick family says. “Not necessarily in public, but I don’t think that was a secret within the music industry. And that was a detriment to her development also, because she didn’t hide it within the music industry. She didn’t.” It also brought her closer to Houston, the insider says. “Whitney felt closer to Dee Dee by virtue of them sharing a similar orientation. It is interesting that there is that connection between them.” “Whitney did tell me that one of her primary vocal influences was Dee Dee,” says soul music historian David Nathan. “People think it’s usually her mum or her cousin Dionne. But actually, it’s her other cousin.”
I have to admit, she's not the best to look at but I absolutely love her music. Her voice really matches her music extremely well and she's very controlled vocally. Even Whitney admitted that Deedee could really really sang
This footage is great to see. I met her once, and she was so down to Earth.
