Yo, Bjorn, I FINALLY got to partake in my first "fight club" and I found out that my best weapon just so happens to be a greatsword. Landed some solid hits with good form, according to the instructor. Definitely gonna be looking at glorious weapons like that beauty!
by the time you rush the gap the next swing will be a huge risk, either it cuts you down or you beat the opponent. Risky, and the advantage is on the Bjorns side as he can half step to add more distance to let the swing get closer. Don't need a lot of force to kill someone with an edge
Seeing the mass of that beast moving about, I'm trying to think of anything that could parry a blow from it and am coming up blank. o_0 Cue a Monty Python "Run away!"....
@@b1adedthesis Nice idea in concept but I've watched enough HEMA contests and sparring to know that moving the mass of a body to avoid a swinging weapon is problematic at best, especially against something that has a long reach.
@@Panzersoldat it's always easier to move out of the way than it is to parry or block. Much less energy consumed and let's your opponent leave themselves open. They don't use swords anywhere near that big in any hema I've seen.

No it had practical applications in pike formations it’s purpose was to use the waves of the flamberge to bind multiple pole arms and force them to the ground so that your someone with a halberd or pole axe could chop into and break the enemy pikes
Not all great swords are super heavy, and the best way to fight with them is the circular flowing motions to conserve momentum. If you're trying to stop the blade all the time then yeah, you're gonna wear out. A lot of them feel lighter than they look.

but why does the cross guard grow proportionally? Once it's past 30 cm it doesn't really protect more, especially with how one swings a beats like this, it is just a liability waiting to poke your skull and forcing you to swing it in wider circles
one should avoid looking at a zweihander like a longsword. imagining it as a spear/longsword hybrid weapon would be a healthier alternative. Its guard size accommodates its bulk. Note. The taper on the guad. It is hollowed with gaps to account for weight overall. (yes there is taper on the blade geometry as well, yes there are differently sized ones) The guard, its rings, quillons are the way they are to cut down on overall weight whilst offering protection. Point of Balance POB, also is important to factor. Also an attack cutting from above, has greater reach than an attack from below. the mechanics of reach matter. This with the added reach of the zweihander... well.. reach matters and its speed isn't that much less. A long sword user should respect the incredible reach disparity to a sweihander user, the leverage of course is far greater, the speed differences isn't at all what you might think. as goofy as the below video linked is. It gives you an idea that this weapon changes direction decently.
