@@thegreypath1777 Yes I have dealt with that. No matter what , the therapists I have dealt with tend to think in terms of one-size-fits-all. I know that my TKR is going to take time to feel normal. It has been 11 weeks going onto 12 weeks since my surgery, but I can feel very slow incremental progress on my own but I am often told that I have to really make it hurt and tolerate it to speed up the progress. My insurance authorized 8 weeks of Physical Therapy which I went through but the doctor wanted me to go through another 8 weeks of PT and the insurance denied it so there is some bureaucracy going on between the insurance company and the physical therapy facility but in the meantime I missed some 3 weeks of PT and I have been doing exercises on my own at home and I have been gentler on myself than the physical therapists I had been seeing and I find that I can move with less pain after exercising if I do not over-do it. Of course I had been told that just because you feel less pain does not mean you are improving. I can't be sure of that but I have better ROM now and it seems it largely came with time.
      😠

Just got the staples out yesterday knee replacement on 28. Pain pain pan. I want also to get a mri to see for sure Everything make sure no bone on bone. That would be moral support? Cause pain so bad. It came with 10 therapy sessions included. And found this. Thanks.

I’m 5 days PO and I’m glad I found you. We have a shortage of PT’s in my area and I’m probably going to have to do all my PT at home. You are just what I needed! Love that cat!! my cat has to be with me every second when I’m in bed doing my PT. She gets upset, if I make any pain noises. So it helps me to just concentrate on the exercises. lol

@@curiouskitty7972 That's interesting. I suppose it's true that every case is different. I was just about completely recovered from hip replacement in 6 months, but it has taken an entire year to fully recover from my knee replacement. I am finally pain free, and have full motion and flex. I am preparing to have the other knee done this fall. All the best to you, and everyone who has undergone this life changing procedure. Be Well, my friends, and Prosper! By the way, I just did a 250 mile bikepacking ride from Columbus, Ohio to Cincinatti and back, at the age of 72. It really works!

Hi. Dr Sam..we are in day 8 since the op. Have been watching your video for week one. Awesome!! Tho we are a bit past actual week one we are doing the firs part of the video ..the exercises in bed plus walking...some of these were started prior. Making good progress (i think) Wife is 76, me 73. One thing (not a critism) is that at this point the wire and fiber stitches are still in place and I think contributes to the pain and they may be limiting the possible movement for the 76 YO--not to athletic ==person.. Ouch! But you videos are awesome! jP

Thanks great info, slightly concerned though. I'm 70 I still train 6X per week (weights 3, bike 3) but all my joints, apart from my elbows are goosed. My shoulders are due to be cleaned soon in the hope that it will stop me requiring shoulder replacement and they will look at my hips after my knees are done.
Both knees no longer straighten, my right knee is to be replaced at the end of this summer, the second three months later if I can handle it but on top of that my ankles are in a bad way due to years of walking and compensating for my knees, also my left foot arch has collapsed.
Watching this video make me wonder if my ankles and feet will allow me to do the post operation exercises correctly, I cannot do ankle pumps right now with my left foot, in fact there is little movement at all with it, even my right foot and ankle is pretty sore at times. I have an ugly feeling that they have left these operations too late to be successful due to all knock effects of compensating for so long.
Have you ever dealt with people who have had a life time of being over enthusiastic in sports and now have multiple injuries?

Very disappointed I was told to wait 2 weeks by this doc to start live PT. I was sent home with a list of similar exercises day 1 for week 1 and 2... Did hang straight leg pretty well but could barely bend knee at all. At end of smallest flex sharp pain at implant. is this soft tissue ? bone? I asked several times about this was told to back off push to only discomfort not pain even after 2 weeks. Now 7 week Post op today and only up to 100 degrees with same pain at spot of implant at end of range. Trying to determine if this pain at implant area is Soft tissues , ligament , or possibly due oversized implant? X-Ray shows very small spacing after implant at medial compartment. How can I determine if knee will ever go to 130 without pain. Cant seem to to get any answer from Doc except give it time, at least 3 ,months ? and may take up to a year ??? This is not what I am finding from the research and recovery timelines on a partial ? Thanks !

I had total knee replacement on my left knee March 20th 2024. It has been a long long road. The first few days I was in so much miserable pain because my leg and my calf was so swollen.. it was so hard to walk. But since Monday March 25th, I have been doing better each day. But my ankle and my calf is still very sore to touch. My therapist thinks that the apparatus around the lower part of my calf was a little bit too tight.. I like my lady therapist but I came across your video and you really do go through more details. I'm sure going to be doing your therapy exercises. And I do tend to overdo it when I walk. Thanks again for your time for recording these videos.

Usually the leg raise takes between 2-6 weeks. It’ll come back!! Keep working at it.

I had a belt to a old robe that helped me a lot to raise my foot. I placed in around the sole of my food and gently raised it to where I needed. Game changer for me. A long belt or strap would work but this is the thing I had

I found it helpful to hook the foot of my good leg under the foot of the repaired one and use as a support to lift the leg. Also good for getting into bed etc.

I’m 5 weeks PO have 126 ROM but my extension is -12. My PT has been having me lie on tummy and putting 10 lb weight on ankle hanging off of table. It is excruciatingly painful along with some other exercises he has me do. I have 2 days of swelling and discomfort and become less mobile and my gait suffers. Then day 3 I get back to normal. But then it’s time for PT again. Question is this normal? Is the 10 Lb wight appropriate?

I feel bad that no one has replied to you. I’m actually a PT myself-35 years experience and I take care of patients who have had difficulty with rehab after surgery. Tbh, this doesn’t sound good to me! If I were you I would try to find a PT who uses more up to date techniques such as teaching you how to do patellar mobilizations, using contract relax hold stretching with your other leg during your prone stretches and perhaps percussion/graston of hamstrings/calves, not to mention heavy manual work by PT. By hanging a 10# weight your hamstrings are going to automatically tighten up to resist the pressure which then impedes the stretch and causes the greatly increased edema. Looking up highly rated PTs on Yelp, google and then calling and asking to get on their cancellation list might be a good way for you to move forward. I hope I’ve been helpful in some small way.

I'm post op - July 5. PT is not until 7/10. Its the 7/9 and I just came across this video. I've been moving on my own not really knowing what to do. I've had my knee squared up high above my heart for sure but bent. Gosh, I wish I found this sooner. My knee feels so heavy and swollen. I hope it hasn't set me too far back.

Dreading it all if I’m truthful but keen to get rid of this pain and lack of mobility, any advice would be much appreciated. 🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

Seems like your making good progress! Make sure you give yourself rest time. After therapy, go home and elevate with ice. Might be wise to take the afternoon off after a tough workout at PT
