I definitely understand the secondary market for retired sets. But I don’t understand how these guys put out current sets with crazy markups.

Some were ok or matched the MSRP, but $150 over the price of a currently available set was a bit ridiculous.

Start with a city set you already have and start building around it. Add a house, a market, some roads. Be patient on the growth. You can focus on the details with a smaller size.
