I understand that you may disagree with certain religious beliefs and practices, but I must point out that your comment oversimplifies and misrepresents the vast and diverse range of religious beliefs and practices that exist in the world. While it's true that some individuals and organizations may use fear or coercion to promote certain beliefs or practices, it's important to recognize that this is not representative of all religious traditions. Many individuals find comfort and meaning in their religious beliefs, and may approach them with a sense of openness, curiosity, and respect for diversity. Furthermore, it's important to recognize that religious traditions have played a significant role in shaping the cultural, social, and moral fabric of societies around the world. By dismissing these traditions or reducing them to simplistic caricatures, we risk overlooking the richness and complexity of human experience and culture. Ultimately, it's important to approach discussions around religion and spirituality with nuance, empathy, and an openness to diverse perspectives and experiences. If you actually listed out all those things " they say for you to do" you'd find how similary they are to our laws and social decorums. Don't use this one man (or even a million others) to justify your one-sided takes on billions.
@@jestapath7373 Appreciate that it isn't just Christianity you took in account for. Every other religion - Actually, even philosophies, essentially have values that can be taken into extremes. I love how he implies the simple ideas of "Enjoying something" or "forget how miserable own life is for an hour or two" is automatically a sin. I lived with an evangelical household and I remember a Veggietales episode (a highly religious children show about talking vegetables in case you're wondering what it is) about Temptation and it goes into video games when it comes to the topic of Temptation. It's general takeaway with it was "There's nothing wrong with playing video games once in a while, but if it's keeping you from doing your chores, they're keeping you from being the kid that God wants you to be." Which if you take the religious part out of it it basically boils down to 'video games are fine as a hobby, just don't let it control your life.' It's kind of sad that a children show about talking vegetables has the most nuanced/ least black and white take that I've seen about this 'video games vs religion' topic. Edit: Grammar fix
To be fair though Veggie tales is a good show in general. Like religious cartoons are notorious for being garbage and Veggietales is one of the few examples of a good one. Like there's good shows about religion but generally not for kids and there's a difference between religious shows and shows about religion.
As a kid that grew up in a Christian house hold, I was always so confused on why people hated religion. Now I'm older and see this shit and get hit with a huge ahhhhhhh there it is moment
tbh I understand what you're saying, it sucks when stuff like this happens. Just remember that not all religious people act like this. but yeah, its like they don't understand video games, so instead of learning it, they just judge it.
“Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil... prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun. Eat leaden death, demon...” ― Terry Pratchett

My dad is a theologian and is well respected in his field, and he introduced me to games by playing Mario and Zelda as well as playing coop games with me. Both my parents even liked pokemon to a degree (mom thought Pikachu was cute). The only reason dad stopped playing was because he became too busy.
I know of one Imam from the Utica Mosque who said that he loved Metal Gear Solid. Proof that us religious folks can love video games as much as those who aren't
Religion can be used for both good and bad things. And there are many good religious folks that are chill and rational people about video games. I'm a Muslim, and I love video games! My top 3 are Super Mario 64, Ocarina of time and Chrono trigger! What are yours?
My church just says basically "consume media that doesn't drag you down - that isn't overly violent, sexual, etc. Seek out media that has positive messages, doesn't take too much of your time, and consume it in moderation." Beyond that, we are told to make our own decisions about what we personally consider appropriate to read, watch, listen to, and play. Contrast that with a time I visited another church, and the pastor tried to prove with the Bible that Fortnite specifically was evil. It was such a laughable stretch of logic that I literally had to fight to keep myself from laughing.
@@EoCx1 I'm not sure what you mean. My church encourages it's members to seek out meaningful things that they enjoy - and doesn't make specific call outs of "oh you can't play this game, you can't watch this movie." They teach us principles for finding meaningful media and recreation, and it's up to us to decide how we interpret that - because it will be different for everyone.

@@CrimsonAbyss I wish people would understand this better. Saying "I like movies" does not necessarily mean that I like rom coms or westerns, saying "I'm a Christian" doesn't necessarily mean I'm catholic. Religion I'd say is one of the broader categories of human life, so it's odd how some people will make assumptions about what you believe based on a very different denomination from yours - and it's not uncommon for two congregations in one denomination to have very different ways of presenting their beliefs. Such as it is with all groups of people. Judge a person based on their actions and who you actually learn them to be, not on one attribute of them they casually mentioned.

@@chrischan9318 well yeah, getting addicted to them to the point where you neglect other things is dangerous, but that could also be said for pretty much anything.
I attended a Pentecostal church service one time and they had a guest speaker. And he had talked about how the minds of children are easily manipulated and we need to be careful of what our kids are exposed to. Overall, he was referring to things more like horror movies or Ouija boards and what not. Some lady raised her hand and said "My son plays Xbox, he won't let me take it. He's possessed" and then everyone started blurting out things that their kids do in their free time. For example: D&D, Minecraft, Mario, Sonic, and even Need for Speed. The guest speaker was trying to clarify what he meant, but everyone was just shouting over him and that dude just walked out and said nothing. Quite funny. Here are my notes, as someone who is still Christian. Video games, movies, toys, books, hobbies have not driven me as far from God as the church has. There are good churches out there, however the tradition that some churches hold is disgusting and they are what will drive the future generations away from having a faith.
"the minds of children are easily manipulated and we need to be careful of what our kids are exposed to" True! That's why you shouldn't teach kids religion in the first place. They have no frame of reference and will believe anything you tell them.

What I find funny about the satanic panic and the whole “video games cause bad things” is that in both cases, it’s just people(mainly adults) who see young people enjoying something and than immediately jumping to the conclusion that that said thing that is being enjoyed, is evil.

Seriously. What's funny is when Christians say, "Oh no...those are the crazy ones." Like, bro, have you read the bible? You're all going through life like it's a game of Dungeons and Dragons, some of you just try to not look so nerdy while doing it. "My crazy isn't as crazy as their crazy and that makes me feel better about my crazy."
What saddens me when I see things like this is that there are many parents out there that listen to this bullshit and will do exactly that with their kid's console when they arrive home.
My uncle on my dad's side of the family once told me I couldn't get into heaven because I like videogames. My uncle on my mom's side told me I was possessed by a demon because I took a picture of myself and moved the camera so the image would blur. He interpreted that blur as a "demon" entering my body. It's the intelligence of most Christians that made me not believe in "God" when I was a kid. Now I'm an adult and still see them as retards.
It's also sad that so many parents believe this bs that churched shove down their throats just so they can do the same to their kids once they get home.
This is what irretates me the most abr preachers, half of these dudes spread bullshit of their own beliefs and the people's who listen to this ACTUALLY LISTEN and do all of this shit I,m an atheist I have no hate or disrespect against any religion But for the love of god these preachers really shouldn't be in these religions as they only make it worse And people really need to grow fucking braincells to use common sense and not do this shit

I remember my mom telling me I should get a fun friendly game for once and she bought me Conker. She still doesn't know the game was more fucked than anything else I played at that point
This reminds me of the time my mom and I were living in my aunt and uncles house and their children. The entire household was Christian, and my aunt was the lead in her church's gospel group at the time and became a pastor herself last I heard. The son had devil may cry 4, the game where the protagonist is a demon-human hybrid, and is the son of the also demon-human hybrid main antagonist in devil may cry 3 while also having a religious girlfriend in-game. Instead of giving into the normal demonic nature to destroy without concern or pursue more power without a purpose like his father, he instead does the right thing to save others while accepting that although hes part demon, he can still do the right thing by using his curse to save lives instead of destroy, and punish those who would do evil. Clearly my aunt understood that they weren't doing demonic things themselves in the game, rather fighting against it, otherwise she wouldn't have let it slide. On a more funny note, one time when her son brought his PS3 into the living room to set up a movie and was playing Batman: Arkham City, he let her have a try at it. Instead of fighting off the thugs swinging at her, she opted to just walk while they beat down on her, saying something along the lines of "peace would prevail". One game over later and she went to finish dinner so we could watch the movie already.
