  • Jill Vance, Interpretive Naturalist with Indiana State Parks, of the DNR gives a program for the Monroe County History Club titled "To Build a Reservoir: The Origin of Monroe Lake". The story of how the Monroe Reservoir was finally built winds around almost as much as Salt Creek itself. This presentation, which incorporates numerous historic photos, examines the natural and political forces that ultimately led to approval of the project, discusses the twin purposes that the reservoir was designed to serve, and explains the engineering and construction principles that make it possible for a relatively small dam to contain a reservoir over 10,000 acres in area. At about the 27 minute mark there is a glitch in our microphone which gets fixed in a minute or two.
