Thank you so much for making this video! 🙌🏽 I’m a South African honours psychology student and I also make RUclips videos related to psychology & this is a question I get quite often but it’s so difficult to get answers on the internet! I’ll definitely refer anyone to this video in the future
Thank you for watching and commenting. I just had a look at your channel and your content definitely will be beneficial to the psychology students and students wishing to study psychology. I especially like the video on the types of psychologists that I just touched on but you went into a bit of detail. ruclips.net/video/qj2HKVXhRoA/видео.html
I majored in psychology and criminology. I am considering going into psychology but not sure which branch of psychology is in demand. Is the also a short cut course. Last i heard one can do a 18 month course and become a qualified psychologist. I just dont want to end up studying further and cant get a job. It was really tough getting a job with just an undergraduate degree alone. I was discouraged from a friend who is a psychologist...she said its not like what it was in her days to. she sed its more tough to write those final exams. not sure if someone here can provide me with clarity.
As a psychologist myself, I can tell you that you can earn a lot more in private practice. Plus, you work in a much better environment and pay less tax if you know how to manage your business. You can also manage your own working hours :)
Good Morning Doctor, I am a newbie to your channel. Thank you for the informative session. I am currently studying honours in Educational Psyc and was under the impression that when one practices internship/community work, one gets a stipend or you work for free to gain experience, so thank you for making the section clear.
The DPSA salary scale is for those that are employed in the public sector. The salary or rules in the Deapartment of Higher Education may differ. I would still check with the department of higher education on their rules
Ola, am also interested in embarking in the same field. I have alot of questions and where am from there aren't many people who are interested in what I do so need someone to talk to who can understand. If you don't mind can I ask you questions I have?
Thank you so much! My fellow Interns and I have been debating the NET vs tax since getting our contracts and our numbers were confusing. But this video reflects the numbers the previous interns gave us. I feel confident to set up a budget now, thank you!!
All psychologists, irrespective of speciality, in the public sector should earn the same but if you are in the private sector or higher education, it differs. I will look into it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this video, Doctor. I was truly thinking that I would have to sell all of my belongings in the internship and community service years, in order to survive (actually made peace with it already). I was told at my university that we will not be paid at all during that time.
@@InterncomservVlog Wonderful! I subscribed, so I will watch it for sure. Another topic that is of interest to me is when and how to apply for bursaries, internships and community service. Thanks again Doctor, your channel came to me as a prayer answered.😊
I want to be a psychologist I just love it and I wanted to know how I will make it once I finish school to go to university I really want to be a psychologist and I'm not settling for less
@Kefentse Rachoene thats true...for you to be called a qualified Psychologist you have to have either a MA/MSc(3 years BA/BSc + 1 year Hons + 2 year of MA/MSc = 6 years) in whatever branch of psychology you decided to register and also you have to pass the board exam. BA alone is not enough. To even register as a counsellor you still need an hons.
Thank you for this video. From what I understand Public Sector internship (as referred to in the video) are the only for the field clinical psychology. Does the public sector also employ interns in Educational/Counseling and Industrial Psychology? I haven't really been able to find any information on this. Do you maybe have a link? Furthermore please can you do a video on psychology internship in private and/or higher education sector? We need more factual career information like this in South Africa! Thank you!
I am not aware of the public sector employing educational psychology for the internship. I assume the department of higher education does employ interns but the salary is apparently is lower according to one of the viewers on this channel. I definitely will look into the private sector internship. Thank you for watching and the content suggestion.
Can someone please explain to me why psychologists charge so much but earn so little?? In my experience they generally charge approx R1k per hour, so how come the stats show that they earn so poorly?
My Doctor. This video is very important. I wish they could feature it in university prospectus. Thank you so much for this. Now i can plan my life accordingly
Yes. All salary should be the same if you employed via DPSA rules. If you are employed via the Department of Higher Education then the salary may differ. Each University it seems pays differently.
@@InterncomservVlog I apologize for asking too much, this is going to be my last question. Do you have any idea if research psychologists are in demand more than clinical or counselling psychologists and vice versa?, judging from the selection process if you've heard of any?. Thank you❤️
I tried to look at the numbers but the answer requires a bit more statistics which is difficult to come by. I would think that it would be easy to get work in the clinical or counselling field as you deal directly with the patient who will be paying you directly. In the research field the client is corporate, universities, NGO's etc. so the client base will be smaller. But I assume the corporate will definitely need research psychologists to guide them. Specialised work will pay more but demand may be less. This is just my opinion and not based on thorough research.
You are an experienced psychologist so as someone who specializes in a topic called emotional evolution i would like to know what are the challenges that most psychology practitioners suffer from and possibly yourself as well? your response is highly appreciated
Hi Doctor, I’m not completely understanding and just want to double check something. What does it mean when you say working in an ‘in-hospitable’ environment? Is that simply working in a hospital? Thank you so much for your lovely video. I’m a psychology student and this helped me lots!
Hey! Inhospitable typically means an uncomfortable or harsh environment that's difficult to live or work in (such as rural villages with maybe limited access to water etc)
Thank you but I have 2 questions can you do a career path for I/O P secondly after Bcom in IOP studies can I apply for a job or should I do masters FIRST ?Thanking you in advance .
I want to do phd in clinical psychology from south Africa. Can u please guide me which university is best and about the fee also. I did MSC in applied psychology from Pakistan.
I would assume it depends where you work. If you are employed by an institute under the DPSA then it would follow you would earn the same as a psychologist salary I posted. If you work for the Department of Higher Education then it would differ from the DPSA salary as each university has their own salary structure.
You work for a university thus you probably get paid according to university structures and that would explain your salary scale. The salary I discussed was Public sector (DPSA) regulations.
