  • Welcome to Episode 28 (Part 1) of Talking Prisoner. Hosts Ken Mulholland and Matt Batten sat down with the talented Maggie Kirkpatrick who played Officer Joan Ferguson. Maggie appeared in over 400 episodes of Prisoner but also has a career spanning several decades appearing in shows such as Cop Shop, Jonah, Richmond Hill, Home and Away, All Saints, Eden and Prisoner, also a veteran of the Theatre playing Madame Morrible in Wicked for seven years and 1600 performances. This is Part 1, we spoke to Maggie about her life growing up as a child and losing her dad at such a young age and when she first broke into acting. We discussed the many TV shows that she has appeared in such as Richmond Hill which was created by Reg Watson who created Prisoner and working alongside Ross Higgins, Paula Duncan, Tim Elston, Gwen Plumb and Amanda Muggleton on Richmond Hill and her shock at the show being axed at the time. We also spoke to Maggie about one of her first jobs as an Usherette at the Civic Theatre. We spoke with Maggie about the Beach Hotel which at the time was owned by Arthur Greenhalgh. Maggie shared with us how she got one of the most iconic roles on Australian TV Joan “The Freak” Ferguson and that Prisoner Producer Ian Bradley created the character and Maggie being his first choice for Joan Ferguson and how she first auditioned for the role of Vera Bennett which ended up going to Fiona Spence. Maggie shared a very funny story with us about the late great Sheila Florance and what it was like working with her and Gerda Nicholson. Maggie told us about the storylines that she did not agree with and the ones that she suggested to the writers and what it was like to work with Prisoner Director Kendal Flanagan. We discussed Maggie’s hair change and the time that Sammy Davis Jr visited the set of Prisoner and what it was like to celebrate her birthday with him in Las Vegas. Maggie shared with us her thoughts on Wentworth and Pamela Rabe playing the role of Joan Ferguson. We broke down some episodes with Maggie including 413 where Joan is sent on a horrible acid trip and kills her dog, which Ken was able to share some behind the scenes information that we did not know, more to come for Part 2 of this amazing episode.

      It's not easy to do the remote interview because body language is not fully on display. There also tends to be overtalking because of the communication delay. Maggie negotiates all of this better than anyone I've seen so far on this series. What a delightful woman.

    I met Maggie in Worcester here in the uk back in 1992.
    She was doing a public meet in an amusement arcade in town. I had my photo taken with her.
    I have to say she really wasnt in a good mood. She was waiting for a car to pick her up. She was on her phone demanding to know where her car was and really wasnt very polite. She really didnt want to be there and i remember thinking she was just as miserable as the Freak character she played.
    Needless to say i guess she was just having a bad day.

    Excellent first part. Some really funny and insightful bits.
    I love the loyalty she showed her character, challenging producers when they started to pursue more ridiculous and inconsistent storylines for Joan.
    Unlike some of the others, I'm glad she's actually watched Wentworth and is in a position to give an informed opinion. Agreed, Rabe is the perfect choice to take on such an iconic character. I also agree with Maggie that they shouldn't have made the new Joan a prisoner so quickly. There was an opportunity for a lot more from the revamped Joan in her effort to stay on top.
    Can't wait for part 2.

Any plans to interview Tina Bursill (Sonia Stevens), Rosanne Hull-Brown (Merle Jones) or the great Fiona Spence (Vera Vinegar Tits Bennett)? Love all the interviews so far keep em coming. Love and best wishes from Scotland!

    I’m reading the wonderful Maggies book at the moment on kindle hopefully I can get a hard copy at some point. Her story about her mother being a ticket collector and the bus driver is similar to my paternal grandmother’s story . She met my real grandfather the same way in the uk in the 1940s. I found out tracing my family tree.. I look forward to reading the rest. I’m on chapter 3. I thought she was great as The Freak in Prisoner but also a great actor in everything else she’s done. I’m not sure she will read this but well done Maggie for being able to tell your story especially after your court case . Thank you Ken and Matt for these great videos with the actors.

    Maggie you are one of my favourite Australian actresses. I first saw you live in Anything Goes at the State Theatre in Sydney in 1989.
    Loved your portrayal of Joan Ferguson. I respect Pamela Rabe but to me you are the only Joan Ferguson! She played it well but didn’t capture the essence of the character as well as you did. Regards, John from Wollstonecraft Sydney.

      @@TalkingPrisoner all her scenes were great, but ones that stood out for me was when Joan was temporary governor, all the scenes with Len Murphy, general interactions with Meg Morris and Joyce Barry in the staff room. Also her disagreements with Anne Reynolds in the governor’s office.

      Funnily enough I was terrified of her character when Prisoner screened in the early - mid 80s. I was in primary school at the time and my parents banned watching Prisoner but my grandmother let me watch it with her. We also had a cleaner at my school that looked just like Bea Smith and all the kids were scared of her because we thought she might come up and smack us if we did something wrong.
      And then in the early 90s it was re broadcast at 4 am on Channel 10 and that was when I really got into Prisoner.

    A few similarities with Val's interview, in that they have so much respect and admiration for their Prisoner castmates and crew, but both had a problem with at least one of the directors/producers and were not afraid to speak their minds! Never before realised how similar Maggie and Val come across in real life; their rival characters were so different. Great actors!

      Thanks Joseph. Val and Maggie were amazing to speak with. Do you have a stand out scene with Val and Maggie in Prisoner ?

    • @josephd.2725
      @josephd.2725 2 года назад +2

      @@TalkingPrisoner Thanks for liking my comment! Two scenes come to mind between the two of them. The first is when they meet for the very first time in episode 287 by the press. They introduce themselves to each other and The Freak goes to walk off, stops and looks over her shoulder at Bea. So powerful. The beginning of a brutal rivalry!
      The second has to be the beginning of the Great Fire (326?) when Bea goes to kill The Freak by strangulation with a metal bar. Bea believes she's completed the task and stumbles off towards the security gate, physically and emotionally drained. The Freak's eye open like a terminator as she lies on her back, and she's back alive! She gets up, picks up the metal bar and sneaks up behind Bea at the security gate.... "SMITH!!" she whispers loudly, and BAM! she clobbers Bea to the floor. All amidst a prison that's burning down! A great scene, great action, and powerful drama! What brutal enemies. It's a great performance. I don't think any other Prisoner rivalry comes close.

    One of the very few Prisoner actors you've interviewed who regularly watched and enjoyed Wentworth!! 😆
    (And she's completely right, Joan would have never become a long term inmate. The show jumped the shark somewhat after that point)

      @@TalkingPrisoner no worries. Yes, I did. That'll be good. Despite her being a divisive character, I've never read an interview with her and she was a significant character, one of the longest running I think?

    • @philiphayes6733
      @philiphayes6733 2 года назад +1

      @@DistantCousin Meg was one of the longest running with 669 episodes, but Maggie is ranked like 4th or something on the IMDb cast list. But adding on to your comment about Wentworth, I'm glad they are asking that question if cast have been enjoying/liked, I've been bummed by some of the responses saying the show "confused" them because they used "Legacy characters" those characters were changed for good reason because it was a new era. Maggie herself told Pamela Rabe to "go for it" with the role of Joan, Pam has very few acting credits and all her work is mostly theatre so she did a fabulous job. But Joan being an inmate and on the run is a choice that the writers made so that could make the cast "more ensemble" after Danielle's exit, so Joan setting fire to the prison would've landed her in jail anyway.

    • @DistantCousin
      @DistantCousin 2 года назад +1

      @@philiphayes6733 yes, and some of them were very "precious" about it e.g. Louise Siverson said something along the lines of "I created that role. There can't be another Lou Kelly"! And she was serious! Oh, please!! 😆

    • @philiphayes6733
      @philiphayes6733 2 года назад +1

      @@DistantCousin That response from her irritated me actually. Kate Box Smashed it out of the park as that version of Lou and I highly enjoyed it. Like if you haven't watched that performance I feel personally you can't have a say until you've seen it. It's what i've said for years lol, Wentworth was never a "reboot" just a retelling with different actors portraying these characters in their "legacy" roles. Like there was 13 actors who had some form of appearance in the show and they've been great about. I feel like if I mention Louise Siversen I'll go on another tangent, but I remember Fiona Spence calling it "The Ultimate Compliment."
