  • Here's a video to start off the K Go Garden channel of cleft grafting an apple tree with 6 new types of Apple. I'm putting on Regent, Goodland, Bill's Red Flesh, Akero, Cinammon Spice and Irish Peach. The tree I'm grafting is a strong sucker off of the original rootstock and is growing much better than the originally grafted tree which is 30 years old and a bit sickly.
Cleft grafting involves cutting directly down the centre of the rootstock and then tapering your scion into a thin triangle shape that is the same diameter as the rootstock. You insert the scion into the cleft and then wrap the union with buddy tape (as well as the scion, so it doesn't dry out) and then I use plant tie to hold the scion on more solidly, and to mark what variety it is. Once it's a confirmed take, I will put on an aluminum tag.
If your graft fails, that's ok, the tree will continue to grow as though you pruned it, so I highly recommend giving it a try. Apples and stone fruit are very easy to graft and should be your first attempt, hence making this our first video.
WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL USING SHARP KNIVES AND WEAR CUT RESISTANT GLOVES TO NOT INJURE YOURSELF. WE RECOMMEND USING A PROPER GRAFTING KNIFE, BUT THIS VIDEO SHOWS YOU THAT ANY SHARP BLADE WORKS! I personally prefer using exacto blades because they're cheap, incredibly sharp, and disposable, but I do not recommend them for a beginner.
