They're some FOOLS. You live in a city riddled by crime. But, can't stand a Church Bell!!! One of the most comforting sounds. The Catholic Church has a Chime in Helena, Arkansas. Very comforting. And the babies she's lying about probably don't even hear it. She should use the bell to remind her to PRAY. GOD knows Memphis needs it.

I'm a bell ringer in UK. Sometimes, we ring for several hours at a time. I've done so nearly 500 times, and there are some who've done so several thousand times. The public generally likes it. Occasionally we'll get a neighbour who complains. Our reply is to ask what he was thinking, getting a house near a church when he doesn't like bells.

I grew up listening to the bells at St Michael's Catholic Church chime at 8 am,12 noon & 6 PM with someone actually ringing the bells.
It's sad that with the electronic chimes don't continue the tradition.
My nieces loved hearing them ring & would excitedly yell "Church Bells!"
If the chimes bother you, you can stop what you're doing until they are over & then get on with your life.

As a Filipino, I grew up in a city that with almost 2-3 kilometer there's a huge Catholic church. Usually they will ring at 12NN and 6PM or the prior to the first Mass. We can't do that every mass, because masses in the Philippines are usually back-to-back from 5AM-7PM. We love our church bells, especially if you are living far off the city, the echo it creates a majestic covering acres of rice fields and mountains.

Bells are wonderful! Use ear plugs if you need to sleep during the day - I did when I did nights as a nurse. I find the sound comforting, timeless and a natural sound of life. Far rather hear the chime of a bell than a siren or gunshot in your USA.

Churches, cathedrals can be a source of very loud noise, and often they ve over zealous bell ringers, ringing many times a week. By their own admission, bells are very loud instruments, they generate a lot of noise which penetrates even triple glazed windows. It's an archaic and unnecessary practice. In the UK for example, they often ring for 4 hours continuously for mostly events that are deemed significant by the Church minority, not all, mostly non believers. If churches allowed, then so should mosques, temples etc. But that's not a good idea for obvious reasons. therefore churches/cathedrals should be restricted to ringing on Sunday service, Easter, xmas, no other, obscure events. The church should not have priority over residents, many of whom works shifts, have children, or suffer conditions, autism etc, which make the sound unbearable. It is high time, the church started to behave according to zeitgeist, not some historical whims. Noise is noise, however you justify it, if it interferes with others' enjoyment of space or the right to peace in their home, then it must be controlled, restricted or banned.

To be fair, the sound in this video is not only one bell, but several, and swing-chimed so that they strike in a completely hahazard way. Of course it's a little irritating. We had similar problems in England. We solved them, around 400-500 years ago, by inventing change-ringing. Listen to how English bells can sound, and maybe the residents near to your churches might contribute to the cost of having the bells rehung so that they can sound like this.

You re absolutely right. No mosques, or temples ring in the UK. And they shouldn't, but no more exceptionalism, cathedrals and churches make a lot of noise which interferes with others right to enjoy their home. No wonder the hcurch for most has lost it splace in society, it's seen as an archaic relic, created to be an oppressor, and the bells are very much a part of this oppression: listen to me or run, heathen. We're not heathens, we're civilised, forward looking people, who actually care about their environment and the negative impact on individuals, families, different needs etc. The church, being selfish, cares only for the handful of worshippers and the loons we call bell ringers. In Europe, most of the courts have sided with residents/individuals who have brought their cases to court. Europeans far more advanced than UK, we are backward, mainly because of this ludicrous monarchy set up, this false idea of a democracy.
