I loved working on these figures. Putting the skins on them. Painting them with acetone based paint. The four of us management audioanimatronic artists at Walt Disney World even got to portray ourselves in a national commercial as we walked through and checked the attraction. We soon realized we were not alone. This commercialwas for Halloween at Disney World. I actually replaced the artist Leotta (Madam Leotta) who had been at Disney World the first couple of years to train the other three artists. Neat lady.
RJ Ogren Wait, you worked on The Haunted Mansion?!?!? Well, I suppose some of your fellow imagineers, who tragically died over the years, may be residents in the Mansion now.
4:53 If you think about it. It was Really nice for Walt to have worried we're ghosts would stay since all other old houses have been torn down. And it's sad that 999 ghosts live there now, cuz if you think about it... The must have been countless of haunted houses destroyed, leaving ghosts homeless.... Walt cared for the dead, more than any living person I've seen. I Know that Backstory Was Made up, for the lore of the Haunted Mansion. But you gotta admit. It was very generous of him.
5:07 - I stick with what Walt said. It's a Mansion built specifically for ghosts to come and stay in. No household curse, no mass murder, no departed sea captain, no tragic wedding. Just a Haunted Mansion in Disneyland.
But there is a curse (most adaptations include it), murder (a handful of ghosts went out this way [Connie's husbands in the post-2007 refurb & gator bait Sally Slater] and suicide [the Ghost Host killed himself]), the sea captain is canon (Culpepper Clyne, formerly Captain Gore), the tragic wedding exists (both Beating Heart's tragic origin and Constance Hatchaway axe murdering her husbands), etc.
Paul Frees was also the voice behind Professor Ludwig Von Drake. Eleanor Audley, the voice behind Madame Leota, was also the voice of Cinderella's wicked Stepmother (even the live-action reference model for her) and Maleficent.
This is interesting and ancient even though The Osmonds seem to have a hauntingly good time in Anaheim, CA, of course. Celebrities are going into The Haunted Mansion and it's a dream come true for them even though this attraction at Disneyland is very nostalgic and scary at the same time.
Man, this is cool! It's neat seeing the technical process behind my favorite Disneyland ride! And the music in the background? Classic. Thanks for posting this!
Fun facts....Thurl Ravenscroft provided the voice for the singing bust seen in the video. He was also the voice for the original Tony the Tiger and he also sings Mr. Grinch in How the Grinchs stole Christmas.
you know what's so funny is the changing portraits doesn't have lightning on the ride since it was updated, but it has lightning on the portraits on the video
6:25 Your cadaverous palour, portrays and aura of foreboding. Almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination? Hmm? And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows, and no doors. (chuckle) Which offers you this chilling challenge: *to find...a way out!!!* (Laughter) Of course, there's always *my* way.
Several, actually. Most of them were clip shows with Professor Von Drake's hilarious commentary. One of my personal faves was "Inside Outer Space", where Ludwig, in an observatory, tries to plug his own space travel guide. The clips in this show were from the Tomorrowland specials "Man in Space", "Tomorrow the Moon", and "Mars and Beyond".
I did'nt know that about Kurt Russell , but i did know about the voice of the haunted mansion ghost host . Paul Fress has been the voice of cartoons for years, if you ever watched The Beatles cartoons Paul Frees was the voice of John Lennon and George Harrison.
@chimera15 Many of the ideas got put into storage either as plans or full props. Disney likes to keep as many of the ideas their Imagineers think of around as much as they can. Who knows, they might decide to revisit a lost special effect later if they can. For example, in Disney World's haunted mansion, they now have a section with a bunch of stairways and doors leading to nowhere. This comes from Imagineers who designed a Winchester Mystery Mansion style room but it got turned down..until now.
The Disney Company designed and built the Haunted Mansion throughout the 1960s and finally it was first opened to the public in 1969. Amazing! 🏚️👻⚰️🕸🔮😱
the only problem with this is what year was it aired when was the ride part filmed and when was the first part filmed clearly the first part was months or years before the 2nd part
Supposedly Walt Disney's last words were "Kurt Russell". It's been a mystery to everyone, even Kurt. Kurt and Walt were friends, so maybe Walt was thinking about his mortality and he remembered this movie.
We used to get high before going on the Mansion ride back in the 70's. Pirates of the Caribbean was a good one to on stoned too. We used to smoke weed on the people mover.
She can be seen briefly in the background at 9:15. This footage is from 1970, a year after the ride first opened so footage of the attic (Hatbox ghost, bride) from back then is very hard to find. This is what she looked like back then: img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/George_Gracey/Haunted%20Mansion/CorpseBride.jpg
Kurt Russell: Badass under any circumstances.
I loved working on these figures. Putting the skins on them. Painting them with acetone based paint. +RJ Ogren how old were you then?
was the automation for the characters fully mechanical, or did they also use relay logic in part?
RJ Ogren Wait, you worked on The Haunted Mansion?!?!? Well, I suppose some of your fellow imagineers, who tragically died over the years, may be residents in the Mansion now.
Notice how he never replied back. This guy just wanted attention.
xXSupahXFlyXx or he has more important things to than reply to RUclips comments.. people like you always seem to turn things negative
I remember seeing this on the Disney Channel when I was a kid in the '90s.
Same here for me and I deeply remember Vault Disney well.
Me too
I went there in the 70's,,it was such a cool ride..love looking at how things are made..thanks for sharing

4:18 Thurl Ravenscroft!
5:07 - I stick with what Walt said. It's a Mansion built specifically for ghosts to come and stay in. No household curse, no mass murder, no departed sea captain, no tragic wedding. Just a Haunted Mansion in Disneyland.
I don't mind the tragic wedding idea but I guess the idea of it being a rest home for ghosts fits well.
They used the Tragic Wedding for Disneyland Paris and they said there is a curse over the house at Disneyland Paris
6:27 Has she never seen an opening door or something?
Paul Frees was also the voice behind Professor Ludwig Von Drake.
Eleanor Audley, the voice behind Madame Leota, was also the voice of Cinderella's wicked Stepmother (even the live-action reference model for her) and Maleficent.
The Disney Company began building the Haunted Mansion in 1961 and it was first opened in 1969. It took a whole decade to complete the job. Wow!
4:30 that’s the Hatbox Ghost without his hat!
This is interesting and ancient even though The Osmonds seem to have a hauntingly good time in Anaheim, CA, of course. Celebrities are going into The Haunted Mansion and it's a dream come true for them even though this attraction at Disneyland is very nostalgic and scary at the same time.
I forgot about this episode! Great to see again!
Man, this is cool! It's neat seeing the technical process behind my favorite Disneyland ride! And the music in the background? Classic. Thanks for posting this!
Wholesome and keen mannered Russell right here. A little over 10 years later, he would bark line "ya F** you too!" In the Thing. 😁
I love the Haunted Mansion! I've ride that ride since I was 8 years old! It's Scary Fun!😄💖
Fun facts....Thurl Ravenscroft provided the voice for the singing bust seen in the video. He was also the voice for the original Tony the Tiger and he also sings Mr. Grinch in How the Grinchs stole Christmas.
You can see the original hatbox ghost at 4:30! Sans hat.
you know what's so funny is the changing portraits doesn't have lightning on the ride since it was updated, but it has lightning on the portraits on the video
Drayke H I know. It's as if Disney predicted themselves doing that.
6:25 Your cadaverous palour, portrays and aura of foreboding. Almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination? Hmm? Justin Blystone I know this by heart and repeat it everytime I'm at WDW! Paul Frees was great as the voice!
This is Amazing I Always Wondered how the Haunted Mansion was made, including other Disney Rides
Now I can't get "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" out of my head...
I know you from somewhere... Of course! You're Doggans, right?
No, no, I think he's that "Spazzmaster" fellow.
Fascinating. I recall seeing this on the Wonderful World of Disney back in '72. Is it available on dvd in any of the Disney Treasures dvd sets?
kurt russell just makes it way better. i wish he wore the same outfit as in big trouble in little china...

Nice! I've seen clips from this in other stuff for years, but had no idea where they came from. Thanks!
Around 4:30 is that the Hatbox Ghost?!
Yes!
He also at 9:14 but it hard to see him
YES SIIIIRRR
4:17
4:20 🎶Spooks arrive for the midnight spree🎶
4:24 🎶Start to shriek and harmonize🎶
4:26 🎶Grim Grinning Ghosts, come out to socialize🎶
In the Haunted Mansion film, Madame Leota remained in the crystal ball in the end, perhaps she wanted to tell what happened to the spirits.
Next year in 2024, the Disneyland Haunted Mansion will celebrate its 55th anniversary! 1969 to 2024! CREEPY!!!!! 🏚️👻🕸️🔮😱
And the last words that came from Walt Disney before he died was "Kurt Russell" written down on a piece of paper.
What an exquisite miniature
aw Donnie so cute
THE Kurt Russell who played as Snake Pliskin? Who would influence Snake and Big Boss's name and Design from the Metal Gear Franchise?
8:07-8:14 All our ghosts have been *dieing* to meet you. This one can barely contain himself.
DYING.
i remember the vault disney. i used to get up at 430 in morning to watch when i was little kid. sigh those were the good old days
Happy 50th haunted mansion

The 1960s technology is incredible!
0:05 Model of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom-which would open just two years later at that point.
Mum love this ride when I was younger
nice retrospective of the making of Disneylands Haunted Mansion with a young Kurt Russell & The Osmonds
8:31 it’s Lisa Marie
THAT is Madame Leota!
@8:37 70s camera tech meets 70s projection tech. 😂
the scariest thing in this video are the Osmond kids
+SchwarzeBAnane - I never said I didn't like them
But you said they were scary, that kind of infers you dont like them.
Hugh Jass I’ll be honest, I don’t even know who they are....
The Osmond's and E. J's hokey acting and corny dialogue is very cringe worthy in this but Russell was passive.
So cringe 😝
Paul frees also narrated "adventures thru inner-space" in tommorowland
Is this the only ride they did in this type of video or was there more ride videos like this?!?
6:15 King Candy from Wreck It Ralph/The Madhatter
I loved how EJ put Donnie n front of her
Brilliant!
Remember watching this special on TV in the 90's. Don't think I saw this scene
This happened...how much more can i love the seventies?
The Disney Company designed and built the Haunted Mansion throughout the 1960s and finally it was first opened to the public in 1969. Amazing! 🏚️👻⚰️🕸🔮😱
The Hatbox Ghost shows up in this video!
Where?
4:29-4:40
4:29-4:40 he's the one that the guy dips his paint brush into, the ghost holding the paint
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ON THE OPENING!!
Donny puttin' the moves on E.J. Peaker. Nice!
is this disneyland one?
adder birdo Judging from the way the house looks, and the fact that it's in New Orleans Square, this is the Disneyland version.

I only went on the Haunted Manson ride at Disney World !
i missed stuff like this last yr i was the tight rope walker for Halloween
8:29-8:30 Goblins
7:26 that's Donny Osmond???
Wish I had this job
6:55-6:57 Than again, maybe not.
Is tim matheson narrating?
4:30 - 4:44 Isnt that the infamous Hatbox Ghost that was only in the Haunted Mansion for a month or so ?
Yes, but he was returned (albeit updated) in 2015, at least at Disneyland.
the only problem with this is what year was it aired when was the ride part filmed and when was the first part filmed clearly the first part was months or years before the 2nd part
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize 4:25
I loved this ride this yr ofor mickey Halloween party I will be dress has a mansion cast member
Yale Gracy at 3:55
The end is missing.
was this from the Disney after dark film ?
No, this was Disneyland Showtime, an episode of Wonderful World of Color that originally aired March 22, 1970.
The ride was originally intended to be a walk through tour with a cast member as the host
Supposedly Walt Disney's last words were "Kurt Russell". It's been a mystery to everyone, even Kurt. Kurt and Walt were friends, so maybe Walt was thinking about his mortality and he remembered this movie.
Just wait a few more years and we can have a new special, The Haunted Mansion, the home of Kurt Russell and The Osmonds.

Kurt Russell shows the behind the scenes in the making of the Haunted Mansion
This sh** is priceless. Who wrote those cornball lines? Thanx for sharing!!
It's a pretty cool promo with Kurt Russell and Donny Osmond as youngins', but it really was a "spoiler alert" and took the suspense out of it.
We used to get high before going on the Mansion ride back in the 70's. Pirates of the Caribbean was a good one to on stoned too. We used to smoke weed on the people mover.
Awesome I never knew that weed was allowed at the Disney parks, but I know that marijuana's not legalized in Florida yet.
Gabychan13 It wasn't, we just knew when and where to smoke it without getting caught.
TheChuck624 That's awesome, but then again in those days you could've got away with anything.
Did ya see "Alice" in there
E. J. Peaker, she was hot, waaaaaay back then.
WHAT is that in the background @ 8:20 ???
JoshuaTaylor a picture?
Sounds like Kurt Russell?
Where’s the bride?
dude, walt disney was a genius !
Where's Marie??
man...I feel ancient
Donny here would be surprised about what currently happen at the Haunted Mansion every Halloween and Christmas. ;)
no wonder why people are afraid to die
what's wrong with the bride why didn't you put her in the video
She can be seen briefly in the background at 9:15. This footage is from 1970, a year after the ride first opened so footage of the attic (Hatbox ghost, bride) from back then is very hard to find. This is what she looked like back then: img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/George_Gracey/Haunted%20Mansion/CorpseBride.jpg
Cole Walker yay
I know
"The rest of you guys just MAKE-OUT the best you can."
Donny was going to make-out with EJ.
Those grave pop up ghost doesn't scream anymore. I wonder why.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
The most scary thing in this clip is that all the Osmonds are dresssed the same.
1:01 Toot Toot skeleton anybody
The names Snake
Look at baby Kurt Russell!!!! 😂
The ghostly ghosts are the hostly hosts.
