    I'm recovering from surgery right now after breaking my arm in 3 places.. my arm was dangling..1 plate, 13 screws and about 40 stitches... Nerve damage... Can't even move my hand...I will need tons of therapy... At least 6 months the get full feeling and movement back... The skate park is dead to me.. But I will skate on flat ground
    Again

      I’m a little late but I’m going through that now. I got a plate and 10 screws in my arm. Skating backwards outside and hit a rock. I fell and tried to catch myself and broke my radius in 6 places and my ulnar stylloid was fractured as well. I had 3 surgeries in one. Wear your gear and be safe ladies.

    Skated for 1 month broke my wrist about to take off my skates and everyone said no more skating for you. I laughed and said naw I’ll be skating more and told all my doctors I’ll be back to skating once I get the clear. So now I’m healing and counting down the days I can skate again.

Thank you for this encouragement 💓. This whole situation has really sucked. I feel all these people’s pain 😭. It’s a horrible thing to dislocate something.

    Thanks for posting this. I tore my ACL about 15 years ago breakdancing. There wasn’t really a forum or community like this for me to stay connected. When I had to stop I felt like I lost all my friends and like no one cared. It was so sad. It sucked! Today, my ACL is fine, but my left knee is weaker and I have some fears about injury. I started skating back in October to have fun and build more strength in my legs and knees. I just recently started refereeing for roller derby which I’m so excited about. And I’m thankful for this new community and connection of skaters!!

    I'm super duper happy this video was made. This is a part of the real side of skate joy. I was down for over 6 months on an overuse injury to my left leg. One day, I turned my knee to lace my boots and *pop*. I went skating on that following weekend and felt like my leg weighed a ton to lift. It was as if I were skating for the first time. Luckily, nothing broken or "torn", but inflammation is NO JOKE.
    Today, after much resting, leg strengthening, stretching, swimming, etc. My legs look and feel stronger. Still, some inflammation in the left knee/ankle; but safe enough for me to skate around in my home and rink, lol. I'm skating in the bedroom closet spinning round and round, practicing power and hockey stops in the dining/kitchen area and perfecting transitions. It's a great place to start after an injury before skating outdoors again. Plus, with the help of an expensive knee bandage, I was able to skate for 1.5 hrs at rink and feel that I even improved after all that time. I WILL NOT GIVE UP :-D!

  • @aimee1113
    @aimee1113 3 года назад +1

    I just got my first pair of skates in over 10 years. When I was in high school, I fell at the rink and jammed the hell out of my wrist and it scared me out of wanting to ever skate again. I went skating once after that, maybe four years ago. But I wasn't with someone supportive who tried to just push me through my fear and had a miserable time and didn't want to pick it back up.
    After watching this and watching a ton of other skating videos and knowing its not the end of world to injur yourself skating, I'm so excited to get back on skates and conquer my fears again. Thank you for helping to give me the confidence to get back on wheels ❤️

    I really needed this. I broke my ankle mid-July, had surgery the next day, and I was cleared to walk a little after two months. I have learned a ton about myself over the last eleven weeks or so. Definitely want to upgrade to a pair of Jacks, that's for sure! I miss skating so, so much and this video has helped remind me that I will skate again and will absolutely crush it (not my bones though, lol.) If you're injured please know you are not alone and you are so dang strong. Thank you for this ep! It absolutely warmed my heart!

    Thank you for creating content like this!! I'm new to roller skating. About 3 weeks in I fell from a standing position (should've bent my knees) and fractured my left arm at the radial head. I had knee pads and wrist guards on but I skipped the elbow pads. I hit my elbow hard and that's what caused the fracture. The pads would have saved me from the injury being this bad.
    Anyway, I was getting discouraged thinking I must be really terrible at this for breaking my arm. All I see are cool moves and amazing skaters. It is so nice to know I'm not alone and that this does happen to other skaters. Thank you so much for highlighting this other side of skating.
    I will get back on skates after I get the doctor's clearance. I have learned that I should wear all the gear and learn how to fall. I feel optimistic and I'm excited to skate again. You're all awesome. Keep making great videos!!!

    Thank you so much for making this!! I just went to my first roller skate event on Monday and promptly fell backwards after just one successful loop and broke my left radial head. I had all the safety gear on but the force of landing mostly my left hand basically crashed the bones together. Thankfully the doctor wasn’t worried at all and said I could be back out in a few weeks 😅 it’s really helpful hearing all of these stories even though I’m not really in the community yet. Love and health to all these beautiful skaters!!

    A few months ago I had a traumatic experience where basically my bare feet were crushed under stiletto heels. I had just started to learn how to skate when this happened and I was devastated because my feet were in so much pain, I think my bones were broken, I could barely even walk let alone skate! I was so scared to try skating again for months afterwards but I just started practicing again and I’m so incredibly happy! Skating is helping me in ways I never could’ve imagined!

    Injuries being a part of skating, for me, means it might not be the right activity for me, unfortunately. I have a condition that causes faulty collagen, extreme joint hypermobility, and a tendency to have soft tissue tears and dislocations.
    I know falling is part of it, but hoped the protective gear and taking it easy would be enough to just get the feel. I wouldn’t recover from one bad fall. I’ve already had multiple joint surgeries and use mobility aides part time.
    Thank you for making this video. If anyone else has EDS, over 40, and is out there skating, please let me know!

    Broke my elbow 2 weeks ago. Was rollerskating in a new area that had big cracks on the concrete and I lost my balance and fell. Thankfully I didn’t need surgery. The first week I was just in pain. The 2nd week I was just in a depressive black hole. Felt a lot of shame/guilt. I’m going into my third week and I’m starting to feel better pain-wise and mentally as well. Looking forward to being able to skate again. Already learned a lot from this experience. First and most importantly, get good-quality safety gear. I was wearing all my gear when I fell but they were cheap, low-quality ones. Try to scope out new areas to go skating first especially if you are a beginner like me.
    Thank you Rebel and all othet skaters for your encouraging words. 💚🛼

      @@QueerGirlStraightSkates i SWEAR by it. My wrist is still sore for when i crushed the ball and broke the bone on the side that had the ball. It happened at the rink going really slow. I also skinned my knees at rinks. So bump that. I wear wrist guards and knee pads at all times. I bought the turtle from amazon first time i saw it. Talked to the chinese sellers. I received it from china in about 10days. They were very nice about my urgency. Im glad they did. I wore it outside. Works like a charm even outside.
      Heres a story. Im 6ft tall and 150lbs. I wear a size 6 and size 8. U know how almost all kids that are boys love to race? Well this high schooler decides to go as fast as he can backward mohawk gliding. He was as tall as me and thicker. Going fast like the wind. I was scooter pushing around the corner cause my crossover was whack.i was looking over my shoulders. I saw him coming full speed. HE DIDNT LOOK WHERE HE WAS GOING and plowed into me full speed. I leaped into the air like charlie brown on the mound. I hit the ground butt first with my legs in the air. The force was so strong, both wrists were sore (and i wore triple 8 leather wrist guards -$50 ones that look like gloves). My tailbone or buttocks were JUST FINE. Not hurt or sore whatsoever. No doubt, i would have had to call the ambulance for a broken pelvis. I came down pelvis FIRST!!! The turtles head is in the small of my back. Its entire body helps. Im thinking about getting another one and knee pads.

    Skated my first derby practice (no contact) last night, after 15 months of being off skates. AFTER a successful derby practice, literally "321 Wasteland" i backed up, and didn't notice the sweater someone dropped behind me. It got caught in my wheels and i went straight down on my ankle. Surgery went well but lack of medical help forced me to do my own PT so it took longer. 😭 It feels amazing to skate now, don't even mind that I'm essentially starting over. I'm also mostly doing bubbles right now.

      As i went down backwards I managed to turn myself somehow, just missed a tailbone landing but it still hurt my bum n elbows i went over clean in the air n then bam!
      Paaaaiiinnnnn
      I even felt the jolt in my head!
      Didnt hit my head, felt like my head went dwn into my neck!
      Cdnt walk without severe pain n an extreme waddle for 3 days, still have severe headache behind my eyes after 3 days
      Been in bed with hot water bottles on back n bum for 3 days
      It has started to ease 'slightly' today, day 3!
      Thing is i normally 'always' wear my padding but this one time i was practising at home i didnt pad up it would have at least saved my elbows! Not bleeding but so bruised swollen n soo sore.
      I have now ordered bum pad shorts and a turtle!
      Agree falling is part of it but i cannot do this pain again if there are aids that can minimise the injury n pain. Im 58 i think it takes longer to heal the older u are.
      Boo hoo for me hehe
      Hope u feel better soon. Xxx

    Getting injured at an indoor rink made me buy my own skates. I fell because the rental skates had a shotty knotted-together lace that didn’t allow me to tie them properly. Instead of asking for another skate, I made the mistake of not saying anything. Freaking lace got caught in the back wheels and put me on the floor. So painful and embarrassing. Fortunately I didn’t break anything but it sucked.

    I love skating ! I used to play Roller Derby here in the UK and long story short ... wipe out = dangly leg = total knee replacement 😬 Not 1 day goes by when I don’t think about skating or how awesome this or that surface would be to skate on , it’s been 10 years and I’ve just strapped my skates back on my feet . I was very nervous at first but soon got my skate legs back , I’m only going to gently street skate from here on in but it’s skating and I’m so happy now ☺️ I’m also 48 now and don’t want to break a hip 😂 Just don’t tell my surgeon 🤫❤️

It hasn't put me off skating in fact it's made me want to skate more but I'm listening to my body and the doctors because I don't want to cause more harm to my body before I get the all clear

    So yeh, to me it's very important to remember that I can injury myself simply doing some daily routine, so there's no need to stop riding my scooter or my skates after falling from them)))
    Because... Would I stop walking in a rainy weather? Or would I stop cleaning my ceiling when necessary? Of course I wouldn't 😆

    I'm absolutely terrified of starting out on skates because i don't have the greatest balance and i totally wrecked my arm a while ago (flipped my bike and landed on one arm, hearing the girl in red talk about her break made my arm hurt) and im horrified that when i put on skates i'll fall on my arm, and breaking it for a fifth time will probably destroy my arm at this point, but hearing all these women talk about getting back into their skates after an injury gives me more confidence. lots of safety gear on my right arm though. just my right arm. the rest of me can eat shit but my right arm is worth a couple thousand dollars at this point.

      ok thanks cool im crying now hearing shove talk about having a community and staying involved was just amazing. i was doing crew before i broke my arm and after i was out of shape and so weak from not being allowed to do anything all summer and when my season started back up all i could do was struggle to keep up and beat myself up over not being at the same place my teammates were. no one was really there to support me and i didn't have that many friends on my team and that combined with the break destroyed me. i lost the most important part of my life, while doing crew i was in shape and i finally was learning to love my body the way it was and my mental health was amazing. i can't wait to get on my skates. i want to learn to love myself and love my body. i want to fall down a million times just to get back up. please support your injured friends it can be more important than any doctors appointment sometimes.

    "funny" story! I've been on inline skates since I was 3 years old (infrequently, am now 22) and I have been quad skating for about 2/3 months now. My first fresh meat training was not the first time I ever stood on skates, so I kinda knew what I was doing. Then we got to learning plow stops. I have gHSD and sublux/dislocate my joints easily. I was kinda starting to get the plow stops, until my skates decided that my wheels were too soft for indoor floors! I ended up twisting my ankle pretty bad! Fortunately I was back up again in 2 weeks! Currently have some mild knee issues going, but I have that Skate Fever!

      I just started skating in June 2019, after not skating in 40+ years. I am 57 and have lower back pain, the trick, I have found the key to getting back is lots of stretching, morning and night. There are some great stretches, on line to help with lower back pain. Disclaimer, I have never been diagnosed with an specific problem, so not knowing what you have, the stretching works for me.

    Reb, i have a problem. I have the powerdyne plate on my blackjacks but i dont know how to adjust it. It didnt come with toestops so i put chaya stops on it and bought the washer and nut and put it on
    1.Now i found out u dont need the washer and nut or do u? If u dont, where or how do i get the part and use the part for the toe stop
    2,. How do i adjust the neo plate? There is not one video about it. The advertisement is vague. Plz help. Pretty plz. I wanna make sure im getting enough out of my plate. I wonder if its too tight. Do i need more movement?

    • @QueerGirlStraightSkates
      @QueerGirlStraightSkates  5 лет назад

      I would bring it in to your local skate shop! I don't have personal experience with the powerdyne plate, but usually there are nuts that you can tighten or loosen on the bottom of the plate to adjust it. Should be the same for the Neo plate. The washer for the toe stop isn't necessary but will help you figure out if your toe stop is loose which is really helpful. The nut is necessary for the toe stop.

    • @ertfgghhhh
      @ertfgghhhh 5 лет назад +1

      @@QueerGirlStraightSkates the toestop has a pin instead. I just dont have one but will be ordering one. Upon reading, literature says it has some special adjustment action. I thought maybe u had a neo plate since they are popular setups with jacks. But if u nor shove dont have the neoplate, i will have to go to the shop and ask. I just thought that would be a good video since its a popular aircraft aluminum plate

    How to prevent an injury: stretch before and after skating, and don't push your limits. Take the baby steps and wear all of your gear, especially a helmet. In the USA there is no universal health care. People always forget about debt, physical therapy, CTE, and complications when they blow off the gravity of getting injured. Gear won't save you, and supportive skates won't save you either. This is a risk mitigation game. Getting hurt isn't "gnarly" or "a part of skating". Take care of your bodies. The consequences can be incredibly serious.
