  • 'SunSailor' - the unique solar boat has been built with uninterrupted enjoyment in mind. The solar panel roof produces enough energy to power the electric motor 1:1. Any additional energy produced while mooring charges the onboard battery which provides enough energy to keep going for hours.
    The electric motor propels the boat nearly silently though the water. This is ultimate relaxation in peace and quiet.

    This is one of the best designs yet. No shore lines and perfect for those thousands of lakes now plagued with ICE boats. Won't the fish and birds be pleased, and the neighbor's too.
    Put a sail on this puppy and you'd have a functional hybrid that makes sense. The batteries would be the needed ballast.
    All those 'hybrid' plug in cars do not. (make sense)

    800 watts of solar panels @ how many volts ? Are they 12 or 24 volt solar panels and what does the panel tags say they put out in amps ? Thank you :-)

      I'm installing (today) Certainteed 300 Watt (white) units and just happen to be (attempting) formulating the "Straight Line Drawing" right now. These units have max power voltage of 32.48 Volts at 9.24 Amps according to the data sheet. There are other numbers very close to that (voltage jumps to 40+ Volts) for short circuits.
      I haven't tested these units yet and I'm an amateur, learning about (these) electrics too. The other small solar panel system I have test (per panel) at 19 Volts usually, but they're smaller, with less cells per panel. The Certainteed are 60 Cell, mono-crystalline panels that I paid too much for last winter, thanks to Fat Donnie. (90 cents/watt)
      They are high performance units that do better than most, in the hot desert and they're made in New Jersey. The Solar Edge system uses Optimizers to individualize each panel but the circuitry remains DC. Some systems use mini-inverters, and send AC current right from the M.I. attached to each panel, so you can use (conventional) different wires, because the current calculations are different. Generally, DC won't go far and needs big fat wires and can overheat. My smaller 5.1 kw (17 panels) is DC because it's compact. Also, 17 panels x 32 volts (wired in series)
      California requires the most inane calculations imaginable when it comes to figuring out what wires to use; First the normal tables, distance measurements and current and voltage stats. The a 'factor' for maximum temperature conditions, then another factor for how many cables are in the EMT conduit (Conduit Fill) and then a 3rd variable I forget. All that to 'guesstimate' that a # 14 AWG isn't big enough, go to a #12. Or go to a # 10 AWG and any configuration will work. (check the equipment to see if it accepts #10, most do) Here in Palm Springs they decided the #10 AWG ground wire specified on most data sheets is insufficient, so a #8 ground wire goes in.

    I can't see a link to this video on the website. Maybe you should add one. Have you seen www.sailwings.net here a solution is provided to use the wind - not using normal sails, but with an automatic system that requires no attention. It seems a shame that you have only the sun to power the boat and the wind cannot help. How cool it would be to have both together! Also windpower would enable you to sail at night.

    The back ends should be tapered as well to improve efficiency.

    Pontoon design and shape cant be optimum, it has a flat side on it which isn't very good on flow.

    No details. waste of time. There's lots of the videos there which avoids showing how it's working.
