Director : So we need ideas for our next movie monsters that swarms in numbers, i'm thinking zombies. Writer : Fish. Director : Zombie fish? Writer : F-I-S-H, WITH SPIDER LEGS!
I remember in the manga, there was still some "hope" where the male protagonist joined up a few student scientist from a nearby university where they notice they didn't get infected and decide to find a cure to combat this fish disease
Interestingly, the famed Piranha franchise of piranha themed films is only somewhat older than its much creepier spiritual manga successor. To enhance the irony, most piranhas are fairly placid vegetarians much of the time.
I read the manga during a really hot day in summer after eating a huge dinner and feeling really bloated. When i saw the bloated, gassy humans i really felt it, its probably why reading this manga reamains a very vivid memory for me.
The movie flipped the roles of one of the characters, if I'm recalling correctly. In the book, it's the chick that gets infected and turned into that THING and then gets ripped apart by the horde, not the dude.
Well, I guess that's Junji Ito for you... His Art is indeed really great, and maybe it's really hard to convert his art into an Anime format. But yeah, I think both anime and Manga are indeed great too.
I wish there was another anime like guilty crown. A group of resistance fighters fighting back against a conventional force. Preferably not with mechs.
I hate mechs as much as I hate the necromancer skill. Though some shows I like. Im watching one about a sengoku era samurai fighting robot ogres after jumping 450 years into the future. So far it's good.
Thank you for this summary. After reading the manga, I was honestly not in the mood to watch the movie but still curious of it. I'm glad I didn't watch it, the fanservice of Erika going almost naked during the shark attack is so out of place, the story is just a little different but key points are the same as the manga and... just like the manga, the ending seem very depressing (maybe just a little bit less since Kaori seem immune) I am now phobic of Junji Ito's works, especially after his oneshot "The Enigma of Amigara Fault", it's just so freaking scary and makes me so very uncomfortable😱😱😱
indeed, i glad read the manga first before coming here, and found F why is so diffenrent, event the story and his fiance friend doesnt appear in the manga, and yeah the manga ending is kinda sad for me, poor the fiance and i feel pity for the mc his loyal its on another level
The 'monsters' are the spider robots. They inject the virus into living things to power themselves to spread more virus. They don't need an entire living thing to work. In the manga one gets a start by taking a researcher's arm to be a spider-arm. The slutty girl getting infected didn't make her into a spider-human, it made her into a gaseous ogre that the spider robots would find desireable to latch onto as a battery. The infected keep all their memories, but are stuck for the ride as the robots stuck to them murder people and spread disease.
The mechanical legs aren't mechanical legs. Ever seen a microscopic image of a Bacteria or a Bacteriophage? It's essentially an enlarged bacteria that uses the infected as living batteries. They're not machines, they just look mechanical.
It doesn't. The legs are mechanical and was developed by humans. The only thing the viral infection does, is allowing the bacteria (which is apparently a bodiless Lovecraftian entity) to take over the body.

She intentionally powers the machine up seeing how MC gets very close to professor's assistant (Professor gets infected as a result of this encounter in builds flying ship for himself, which he uses to steal his assistant she is madly in love with). Manga also makes it clear that world is not doomed in Gyo. There are a lot of those who are immune, enough to build humanity back. And the sentient gas is something they will have to live with until the day solution is found. In fact, ending provides "The day of the Triffids" vibe.
The reason for always hiding in a room might be connected to the fact that in case of danger, humans always want to go to the nearest spot to hide such as rooms There are dangers and you want to be safe as soon as possible and so they either run or hide in the nearest room because rooms have that illusion of safety
