On Gabriel's show he said that Jay crashed this bus into the curb, and I genuinely would have been so pissed i can't even imagine. It's a priceless one of kind condition car and is one of my all time favorites.
Did this video ever bring back memories. My first car was a '58 micro bus. 36 hp engine, crash box tranny but I had so many great memories in that thing it was amazing. I got it in 1964 when I was seventeen years old. A friend spotted it in a little town they were passing through in Arizona on their way to Colorado for a deer hunting trip. On their way back they talked to the guy that had it for sale. My dad paid the guy $150 and they went back and got it (I lived in La Mirada California at the time). They towed it home and my friend rebuilt the engine (It had sucked a valve) Put new heads on it, a cylinder kit and I was on the road. The most fun I ever had. Thanks for sharing this video. Sure does bring back some very fond memories!
I don’t know why but 15:34 seems like just a magical moment for Gabriel. It looks like he was taken back to being a kid in his vw all over again and doing what he did while riding in it back then. Pure magic.

That was when there unemployment was extremely high so I didn't find a job so we moved back to Illinois but this time my wife drove the VW bus while rode my Triumph. I was crazy back then. Unlike Iglesias, I don't recall ever having any problems with my VW bus and I had it for seven or eight years. Been looking through Jay's videos for a while now, love me some old cars, some new cars, and the production values- always something to learn. This was so good for the comraderie, both for cars and comedians! One of my fave's!
I had a '66 Beetle when I was around 20. It didn't like the freeway either, and it had been hopped up with the engine from a '70s Super Beetle, so it had something like _60_ horsepower, woooo! Josh Nixon But you _felt_ like you were doing Warp Factor 12, because at 55 the engine would be going _WAAAAAAAAA_ like an F1 car from before they went to the boring-sounding turbo hybrids. @@buckykattguitar That's... brave. I would have thought my '66 model's suspension and brakes would have run out of talent _long_ before handling that much power. :)
Only comics and folks with funny bones will always get this stuff...... Like fried food, diet Cokes and to end it......push the dam car. Brings back memories...... Funny ones. Hahahaha. Loved it. Thanks for that.
This looks like the beginning of a new show called Comedians in Car's getting hotdogs and hamburgers. I love these old Samba's. I wish they made more of them. I will now check out Gabriel. He was pretty funny. Another good show Jay.
I watched the video and knew morons would be crying about the fat jokes. I scrolled down to the comment section and found I was correct. Jay, keep the jokes coming. Gabriel was not offended. Nice VW bus.
I remember doing some 25y ago a 300+ mile one-day road trip in late 60's VW minibus (the next version that had single piece windscreen), it was a relief when it was over... no seatbelts, struggling engine, very ineffective brakes and and very obviously minimal crash safety. Steering was as in this one, and gear selection was lottery. Not to forget very noisy, tinny interior and slippery vinyl seats. The car was then probably worth a thousand or so. As an once in lifetime experience unforgettable though!
Yep, if you do want to stay original and keep the points and condenser, instead of Pertronix electronic, Bosch is definitely the way to go. You can still buy most anything for the air-cooled VW's from www2.cip1.com 😉👍
I used a 76 beetle for 4 years daily and the only time its let me on the road is when the coil cable get loose and the engine dies, pop right back and keep going
"Later Elvis, the one they found on the floor!" Hah hah ha hah! That episode was so much fun, I didn't want it to end! Felt like I was hanging out with my close friends!
Amazing to see Someone like Fluffy truly admire the Volkswagen World.. I love his Comedy Shows... I Would love to Own a Bus One Day. I Own 2 Beetles... They're Fun to Drive around and taken to Local Car Shows. I always get a Crowd... People of all Sorts love them. I never Been to California, but i would love to go one day and Hopefully Meet Gabriel at his Amazing Museum...
I had a '63 15 window Deluxe with the corner windows. But I had a 1776 with a radical cam, Chevy valves, and dual Kadron 40mm single barrel carbs. Put the motor in, synced the carbs and set the timing, went out in the street and launched, popped a little wheelie. As long as nobody got in front of me I could run up the pass from Santa Clarita to Palmdale at 90 mph at about 1/4 throttle. And still got 22 mpg. Drove it daily for 6 years and put 150k miles on that first motor. Got tired of push starting it when it was 6volt so changed the lamps and put a resister on the original radio, and threw a 12 volt battery in. With the 6volt starter in there it spun it so fast it almost couldn't help but start. I also wrenched on it like at least 3 days a week. A lot of that restoration but a lot to keep it running too. Early buses put you in the most comfortable driving position.
My memory on VW buses was that they were super reliable. The VW bus was the only transport for Beer , Whiskey and Wine or many years for UMBRIAGO's (means drunkard in Italian) liquor store in New Jersey. My dad managed that store from the late 1950's to the late 1970's and the only type of vehicle used was an air-cooled VW bus and there was only one vehicle, that would be used for 5 years or so and traded in for a new VW air cooled bus. What kind of use did it get? A LOT. That 1 square mile area was listed in the Guinness World book of records back then as having the most pubs and taverns in a square mile in the entire world. UMBRIAGO's was the main supplier. The place is still there but under new ownership and a different name. The Hell's Angels chapter had events a few blocks away and UMBRIAGO's was a supplier. Deliveries went on in any weather and that VW van when loaded down with beer and whiskey went like a tank in the snow. Booze is the vital blood of the hard working blue collar working class of New Jersey.
I think Gabriel doesn't drive it enough. That's also why everything is so stiff, because the parts, windows, door handles, etc, don't get used/opened/moved.
Wow. Don’t even think these are reliable. I’ve had two of the older versions before I had any idea how to care for any vehicle. If you drive one daily they REQUIRE bi-monthly valve adjustments. If neglected they will suck a valve when they get hot and will require new heads and wven more extensive work. My dad bought me a pair of engines but didn’t tell me how to avoid the problems I was into. I’d still have that ‘65 bus or have passed it down to one of my kids. Very safe cars partly because they are so slow. Before the SUV you sat high and could se around you.
Kim Horton No, you are wrong. Aircooled VWs needed periodic valve adjustments that take like 10 minutes to do - you were doing something wrong and you did mention it was before you knew how to care for a car...
syyenergy7 Ya, I daily drove a 1969 westfalia in the late 90s. It ran bad and clunky when I bought it. I rebuilt the motor and it ran great. NEVER failed to start. Over 20mpg Anybody that thinks they’re unreliable wasn’t maintaining it. My bus would start instantly even at zero Fahrenheit
Great episode. We had a bus in the early 70's when I was a kid. All you guys hatin on jay, lighten up these guys are good friends. It was very entertaining.
Kids could stand on that spare tire well with head and upper body stuck out of the sunroof. Then they could get hit in the face by 60mph June-bugs and other large insects, many times. Ask me how I know.
Schluesselmensch That's hilarious! I had a similar experience with my head out the sunroof of our 72 beetle, but my dad got in trouble with the police for letting me do that. Better than standing on the front of the Titanic ;)
You can also crank open the sunroof and stick a refrigerator out the roof, you can also line the inside with cardboard, open the roof and fill it full of plaster and other remodeling debris and make a trip to the town dump. My folks had one like, this except for it was a a '64 didn't have the safari windows and ours had bucket seats in the front.
Gabriel and Jay, PLEEEASSSSE do a tour or a show together. Your friendship is amazing and you Two are hilarious together. Loving that Samba 😍 Their value has suddenly skyrocketed worldwide. They don't have to go fast, but compared to today's vehicles, they're still reliable, so grateful that it's all original
Dad bought a '62 VDub Camper Van in the mid-70s which Dad and I drove from Pittsburgh to our new home in Idaho in '77. We went everywhere in that VDub and aside from I believe 3 engines, a couple clutches and several batteries- it was reliable! My buds loved "the mobile disco" and I packed many heavy newspaper loads for delivery in that VDub. She finally gave out on dad traveling down I-15 when she caught fire (fuel leak) and burned to the ground- true story!
We called the original exhaust the pea shooters. love the old 21 window ragtops.. safari windows... Just nice beach town car. You can adjust the steering box and tighten that up.
So funny guys.....you guys made my day, Fluffy was like sitting next to Jay and enjoying car ride, father and son having fun together....then ended up at fast food chain, how cool is that. Fluffy the car is good it just that you don't have reliable mechanic to put reliable parts, let Jay's guy look at it and get it done, its easy fix. Or you prefer that way, it breakdown so often and can crack some jokes..😃😃😃😃😃.....
i had two VW buses - "65 camper with a "built" engine and a '78 passenger bus. The "78 had ,many improvements including a heater that actually heated the interior. I worked at a VW dealer in the service department so became very familiar with the vehicles. Loved driving them and owning not only the buses but also two Beetles.
The 21 window together with the pop out windows is cool, even the 23 version, when you see a comedian like Gabriel Iglesias, very proud to drive a 1966 volkswagen bus, drive around the old neighborhood, priceless,👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
every years you need to change out the 2 carbon brushes in the alternator and it will charge the battery fine.super easy job, takes about 15 minutes -- 2 of them have to be replaced on opposite sides in the main body of the alternator (usually hidden underneath some flip-up cover). Just like fixing an old 1930's vacuum cleaner
@Christiaan Overgaard You don't know what you're talking about. An alternator _is_ a generator, and it does indeed use brushes, though brushless versions exist (they are large though; not used in passenger cars or light trucks). Also, the earlier "generators" also generated AC current, but the method of converting it to DC output was different.
@Christiaan Overgaard Again, you don't know what you're talking about. Automotive "generators" (used in the mid '60s and earlier) and "alternators" both generate AC which is converted to DC before being output to the battery: "Despite their names, both 'DC generators' (or 'dynamos') and 'alternators' initially produce alternating current. In a so-called 'DC generator', this AC current is generated in the rotating armature, and then converted to DC by the commutator and brushes. In an 'alternator', the AC current is generated in the stationary stator, and then is converted to DC by the rectifiers (diodes). "
You know Jay... I went (unintentionally mind you) right through the windshield of one of those things the day after Xmas in 1981 in Pasadena... took the steering wheel and all (including the steering wheel column right down to the floor as well)... Thank God I was unconscious at the time when it all happened. In the end I only broke my leg as my Stetson hat protected my face from the impact of the glass. Anyway, I swore to never ride in of those VW Vans ever again. They have no weight on the front tires and that's how my friend who was driving at the time lost control in the rain and the front tires lost any sort of traction and we spun out and ended up crossing into the other lane right into oncoming traffic. I'm happy to just watch the video instead!
I had the '67 model of this van when I was going to college in San Francisco. Paid $800 for it in 1975. Lots of Bondo on the front end! So much fun, but not at all reliable. Took my grandmother to So Cal in the van once. There was a short that caused the windshield wiper to stop any time the brake was applied. We were going down La Cuesta Grade outside of SLO on that trip, in the rain. Steep grade that required a fair amount of braking. I had a box of fuses on the bench seat next to me, and (because I had lots of practice) was able to swap out, on the go, the wasted fuse for a new one so the wipers would keep wiping. Grandma asked, "Is everything OK...?" "Oh, yeah, Grandma.... Everything is good." Once, I parked it on a steep San Francisco hill, heading downhill. When it was time to go, I could not get the van to back up. Not enough weight over the rear end. When I'd ease the clutch out in R, it just kept rolling forward, pushing into the car in front of me, which pushed that car into the car in front of it... I got someone to climb on the shelf over the engine, which gave it enough weight to grab the asphalt and back up. Got out of there like a bat out of hell (poor college student, you know, sorry) - at least, as fast as it could go! So many memories with that van: Grand Canyon trip, driving in Phoenix with a busted clutch cable, engine rebuild in Oakland, push starting... Great show, Jay! Love it and your pal!
I always thought of the early Volkswagens as the Model T Part-2, and I mean that in a nice way. They both had small simple motors that were easy to work on and bodies that could be easily modified and have fun with without costing you much money. Anybody could do it.
They were actually fairly reliable when they were new, but if you were like most high school kids that had VWs the ones we got (usually dirt cheap) had a lot of years of being rode hard and put up wet behind them. You had to know how to work on the thing to get anywhere in it. Crazy thing though. You could break down in the middle of nowhere and the next guy driving by would have a spare set of points or whatever it was you needed to get it going again.
Once in a great while a true people's car is born. I think the 90's Honda Civic fits in the Model T, VW lineage. Small, indestructible motor, easy to drive but also fun, spacious for its class size, easy to modify as plenty of people did. I see all kinds of people still driving them. Don't know what today's equivalent would be, too soon to tell.
Hitler was a big admirer of Henry Ford, and he wanted the first Volkswagen to be like the Model T in that common people could afford and use one. Up until that time, Germany mainly produced luxury cars that most common people couldn't afford. It's in the name itself "people's car".
I've been into water cooled VWs for almost 30 years...never really took to the air cooled scene. But this vid has changed that. What a sweet bus! I love how the windshield opens up, talk about a blast to drive. I want one.
Man oh man.... I saw the entire collection and WOW !!! more than cool !!!! I also saw the "Tanked" show that did the aquarium for one of the busses. It was great !!!!
This was one of my favorite episodes to date. So funny! And a nice classic happy change from the usual angry serious race cars or sometimes not as exciting classics!
My first car was a 77 Impala. Big square body 4 door with faded baby blue paint. It had a 305 with a single barrel carb and about 200,000 miles on it. No power at all. But I could pile all my friends in and have a blast. Since then I've had a few different models with the same body style. Olds Delta 88, Buick Electra, Caprice Classic, and now I have a 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan. Newer body style, but basically the same car. But with the LT1 engine it's a lot more fun to drive. Still want to get another square body some day. I don't know if it's cause it was my first car or what, but I still love those old cars.
LOL, "THis is the fastest I've ever seen this thing go!"🤣 Just a side note... I had a 1964 T-2 Bus and also a 1972 (which actually had the 1.8 Porsche engine). The 1964, even with the gear reduction axles, would run about 65 mph flat out without redlining the engine (around 4200). Eventually it was blessed with a modded 1835 DP with enough performance goodies to allow it to rev to 6500. I never topped it out, because it was too squirrely at high speeds, but it accelerated better than most stock beetles! With dual oil coolers, air scoops on the side vents and a deep sump oil pan, it very rarely got hot unless you got stuck in traffic. I love these old buses, and wouldn't mind having another one, but I guess I'll have to live with my '85 Toyota Van, which is about as close as you'll get, and still have liquid cooling, and some measure of reliability.😁👍 Vee-Dubs forever! 🚌🚗🚌 *EDIT:* That no-start part at the end is very common with old buses, when they were hot, especially if they're still 6 volt electricals! Easy fix: Put an old Ford starter solenoid in parallel with the wire coming back to the VW solenoid to give full battery voltage to the starter solenoid. They'll crank every time, no matter how hot it is!😍
This brought back a lot of memories for me. My first car was a 67 VW bus, almost the same color. Bought it when I was 15, that was 45 years ago. Paid $ 800 for it.
My first car was a 1963 1/2 Volkswagen Transporter 1500. It, too was Marina Blue. My Dad bought it new in 1964 and gave it to me for my high school graduation.
This is without a doubt one of the coolest cars in the history of the human kind.
And one of the coolest videos ...

@@buckykattguitar That's... brave. I would have thought my '66 model's suspension and brakes would have run out of talent _long_ before handling that much power. :)
That was just amazing seeing a combination of both legendary comedians and a classic car! ❤
Gabriel is great. Check out his "hot and fluffy" special... or his "comedy central presents" episode... really, you can't go wrong with him.
I watched the video and knew morons would be crying about the fat jokes.
I scrolled down to the comment section and found I was correct.
Jay, keep the jokes coming. Gabriel was not offended. Nice VW bus.
His show title is literally a fat joke. also hes not fat, hes fluffy
jezuzfreek777 lol he’s a comedian, why the hell would he be offended by a joke?
It's not the busses fault fluffy! It's called maintenance!
it's great around 11:00 where Jay is on the freeway and Gabriel is holding on with Both hands! :)
..and only nearing the Exit, did he mention the bad steering box..
My favourite episode ! Not only because I’m a vw nut and own a bus, but because of the comedy, this was all good
You scared the bejesus out of Fluffy on tge highway.. Then when he had to push start the van and you hauled azzz!!! CLASSIC!!
These types of videos when jay Is with his real friends are the best
My VW Beetle stranded me a lot until I quit buying the crappy Checker Auto Parts store brand points and condenser and started buying the Bosch ones.
I get all my parts from Jbugs.
my dads been having trouble with his tr6 ill tell him to try better points and condenser thanks good idea
Well done. Regards from Stuttgart
I never Been to California, but i would love to go one day and Hopefully Meet Gabriel at his Amazing Museum...
super cool. I lived in Germany back in the 60's and 70's so I saw a bunch of these up in the mountains.
This was really funny and entertaining. I love that bus!
Savage. “The Elvis they found on the floor” lmao!
8:36 oh suddenly it's a low rider...
Killed me... hahahaha
How can you not love Gabriel? He's a cool cat! One you can just chill with and laugh until your sides cramp up! Plus that VW is totally sweet!
Kim Horton
No, you are wrong. Aircooled VWs needed periodic valve adjustments that take like 10 minutes to do - you were doing something wrong and you did mention it was before you knew how to care for a car...
syyenergy7
Ya, I daily drove a 1969 westfalia in the late 90s. It ran bad and clunky when I bought it. I rebuilt the motor and it ran great. NEVER failed to start. Over 20mpg
Anybody that thinks they’re unreliable wasn’t maintaining it. My bus would start instantly even at zero Fahrenheit
Who are the idiots that gave this video thumbs down? Two class act comedians. Love them both.
Great episode. We had a bus in the early 70's when I was a kid. All you guys hatin on jay, lighten up these guys are good friends. It was very entertaining.
Brings back great memories of going camping with Boy Scouts in the mid sixties.Crammed in with camping gear and all my buds.
I love Gabriel Iglesias! Jay and Gabriel are probably my favorite ever.
Better than standing on the front of the Titanic ;)
how do you know?
You can also crank open the sunroof and stick a refrigerator out the roof, you can also line the inside with cardboard, open the roof and fill it full of plaster and other remodeling debris and make a trip to the town dump. My folks had one like, this except for it was a a '64 didn't have the safari windows and ours had bucket seats in the front.
Ha! That happens when I ride my Harley.
It ain’t fun. Especially when it’s a bird to the chest or forehead.
Harry Ballzack how do you take a bird to the chest on the freeway and not suffer a fatal crash?
Oh, this was so much fun -- and the laughter between you two was infectious!
This is by far the best rig I've seen on here.
that is one of the best episodes yet.. can't beat two comedians in a VW bus...
The day my favorite comedian takes a cruise with my favorite car guy in one my favorite vehicles. Gabriel, Jay and a VW bus!!!!
We made it through a German car without the Arnold impression!

Gabriel and Jay, PLEEEASSSSE do a tour or a show together. Your friendship is amazing and you Two are hilarious together.
Loving that Samba 😍
Their value has suddenly skyrocketed worldwide.
For sure the expert specialist mechanics will adjust the steering box and charge the fat boy sucker for a new steering box. It's routine practice.
I know where a 23 window is sitting completely rusted out with all the glass missing and it's been sitting there since 2005
@@thecloneguyz buy it and restore it
This was probably the funniest episodes. I'd love to see more Gabriel and Jay. They seem to click. :)
I love the sound of this vehicle
One of the nicest video's. Talking about cars, taking it for a drive and getting something to eat.
I watch this video over and over again. These two guys are so funny.
Great to see an Old Splitscreen on Jay Leno's Garage. Jay needs an old VW Bus of his own in the garage. Great episode. JC.
Or you prefer that way, it breakdown so often and can crack some jokes..😃😃😃😃😃.....
probably the coolest and the most satisfying episode :3
i had two VW buses - "65 camper with a "built" engine and a '78 passenger bus.
This video made my day. Thank you, Gabriel and Jay!
every years you need to change out the 2 carbon brushes in the alternator and it will charge the battery fine.super easy job, takes about 15 minutes -- 2 of them have to be replaced on opposite sides in the main body of the alternator (usually hidden underneath some flip-up cover). Just like fixing an old 1930's vacuum cleaner
I’m willing to bet the battery wasn’t actually dead and his alternator is just fine...part of the skit
Automotive "generators" (used in the mid '60s and earlier) and "alternators" both generate AC which is converted to DC before being output to the battery:
"Despite their names, both 'DC generators' (or 'dynamos') and 'alternators' initially produce alternating current. In a so-called 'DC generator', this AC current is generated in the rotating armature, and then converted to DC by the commutator and brushes. In an 'alternator', the AC current is generated in the stationary stator, and then is converted to DC by the rectifiers (diodes). "
Very good tip
my favorite episode of jay's garage!
VW is my dream collection. Bus, Bug, Fastback, Karma, Slant back, etc... Poppin' the clutch is a handy tool for batteries too low! Did it often!

That was Great.!! .. Two Great Comedians and a cool old VW Bus.!! ... Awesome Video.!
Gabriel and jay my two favorite celebrity's

+Jeffrey Horton no he sucks
Someone once told me that in So Cal if your in a VW van everyone knows your in no particular hurry to get anywhere
My favorite episode so far, I was laughing through the entire vid. Great stuff gentlemen.
Everything is good."
Once, I parked it on a steep San Francisco hill, heading downhill.
Massive thumbs up from me! These two are great together! More please :D
Jay doesn't like people speaking lol. He really loves to interrupt
Not to offend anyone but it's all American talk host, radio host and interviewers that are like that.
@@jeanlubin9878 that's a really ignorant generalization which could only be true if you've listened to every single personm
Right
Jay sucks and isn't funny. He shafted Conan like a whiny baby. His vehicles, however, are cool.
Jay is a rude comic, poking fun at heavier people and does racist jokes, in addition to constant interruptions!
I always thought of the early Volkswagens as the Model T Part-2, and I mean that in a nice way. They both had small simple motors that were easy to work on and bodies that could be easily modified and have fun with without costing you much money. Anybody could do it.
Yup, you didn't even need a timing light to tune a VW engine
I knew a guy who rebuilt one on his kitchen table.
That is one sick ride....swap?
You wish lol, but your second van Boomerang is a prize to keep. Very nice and has all the bells and whistles
He won’t and if swap need to replace transmission and all parts if not one or more will snap off
Love Gabriel!
*EDIT:* That no-start part at the end is very common with old buses, when they were hot, especially if they're still 6 volt electricals! Easy fix: Put an old Ford starter solenoid in parallel with the wire coming back to the VW solenoid to give full battery voltage to the starter solenoid. They'll crank every time, no matter how hot it is!😍
He's lost so much weight! That's awesome :)

My Dad bought it new in 1964 and gave it to me for my high school graduation.
great bus but that is not the original engine, it should be a single port 6 volt and that is a dual port 12 volt ,
If Mustie1 says so, that's good enough for me. This guy knows VW buses.
