This is why Japan does not allow tipping culture. It puts unnecessary pressure on the customers, makes the whole experience unpleasant and unprofessional.
It's called a dirty trick on the part of the industry. People who work need to get paid. The burden of paying those people should not be on the customer. It should be included in the service!

For most of my life, 15% was the standard. Now they want more and more. Tipping should be outlawed and included in the bill which Restaurants don't want to do. Meanwhile, the food gets cheaper and the service gets slower. I'm going back to 15%.
Food gets cheaper? Food prices only keep increasing. And restaurants could just include it in the price of the food but that would make the prices even more outrageous and they don't want to lose customers. If they paid their staff higher wages and no tips, you would get less staff, service would get worse, food prices would increase greatly, etc. You are correct though as service has gotten slower (and it's much worse now IMO than it used to be). I have a friend that owns restaurants along with attached stores. One of the main reasons there seems to be more pressure for higher tip amounts is because if you include the tip on the machine, they will get taxed automatically on the amount.
