The .460 Rowland effectively replaces all magnum revolvers except for very narrow specialty applications. The .44 magnum has been vetted over nearly a Century, and the .460R matches it for power - splitting hairs to the contrary, but while magnum revolvers are limited to 5 or 6 shots, the 1911 can easily carry 10+1 in the field, and has all the advantages that come with autos - magazine reloads, excellent ergonomics, accurate, excellent trigger, and far less recoil! In this video they can be heard commenting how mild the recoil is, and that conversion doesn't have the V2 recoil system that eliminates the heavy reaction spring and further reduces recoil.

Why would anyone want anything else and like you said, comparable revolver kicks like a mule, much lower rd count, heavier and bulkier, slower reload etc, I have had one for a few years now and have been reloading them. One perspective I’d like to share is that I’ve been staying at the low end of the powder charge range ( 190 gr Lehigh Penetrators with 10 grains of Longshot = 1250+- fps for instance) It could be loaded much hotter but where does the law of diminishing returns kick in. That rd at that speed will crack a grizzly’s skull or reach critical organs, and if you need to shoot multiple rds quicker target acquisition. Plus, if you practice and reload you’ll get more life out of your brass.

The day I shot the .460 Rowland for the first time, I came home and sold my Desert Eagle .44 magnum! The DE posted lower velocity and energy numbers with factory ammo, weighed 72 ounces versus 38 for my 1911, and felt like trying to hold and aim a brick, plus huge rocking recoil due to the massive slide!
I also sold off my S&W .460 XVR, and S&W .500 6.5" because despite their power advantage, the .460R, just like the .44 mag is fully adequate to any task needed, but brings significant advantages to the table!
My G20 has become a safe queen, though the G29 still has an operational niche.
I did keep my S&W .500 4 inch, mainly because it displaces all short-barrel revolvers should I ever find a need for one, though probably not.

When I was first looking into getting a hand cannon I researched all the calibers and couldn't figure out why 45 acp was so slow compared to the others.
I figured out all I would have to do is make my own ammo and make a few adjustments and POOF...I would have a 45 worth carrying. Why hadn't anyone figured this out already?
Then I ran across Johnny Rowlands video and... apparently someone had figured it out.

Welcome to the .460R club! Once you have a 1911 in .460R you'll never again carry that Ruger .44 into the field, nothing wrong with it, just, what's the point? With a 1911 you have a solid 8-10 shots with fast reloads, but more importantly, the ability to shoot the gun FAST with excellent control and accuracy due to far less felt recoil thanks to the efficient muzzle brake!
My first 1911 conversion was a Rock Island FS with hard chrome finish - the nice one with dual safeties, bold sights, superior trigger. Before firing I took detailed close-up photos of the frame interior for multiple aspects to create a record to validate the claims RIA guns aren't up to Rowland standards. My thinking was that as inexpensive as the RIA was next to my $1,000 Kimber, I could afford to shoot it to destruction to prove or disprove the recommendation. After 500 rounds of full-bore .460R I stopped worrying. The post-500 round frame showed no change in the impact marks it had before from shooting 230 grain ball ammo. In actuality, a properly converted 1911 frame sees no greater stress than one firing standard .45 auto. The worst set-up ever is people shooting .45 Super from a non-compensated barrel, trying to hand just 2/3d the power of the .460R with ridiculous recoil springs that completely destroy the gun's normal timing.
My RIA now runs a Tougher Buffer 20/40# flat-wound dual spring where the 40# coil only comes into play during the last inch of travel. It also has an EGW flat bottom firing pin retainer which does more to delay slide opening than any amount of recoil spring.

I’m loving this caliber! Thanks for watching and letting me know your experience with the RIA 1911, it’s good to know someone has tested it 👍

I've had my 460 Rowland modification on my 1911 Kimber TLE/RL II for the last 8 years now and am completely blown away by its performance. The round is very versatile and powerful and will give any 10mm or 44mag a solid run for its money. Amazing how accurate it is with the copper penetrator rounds. I do recommend getting the Wilson Combat 45acp +p mags since they'll have 8 round capacity and be able to keep the sidearm from jamming since the OEM 45acp mags will have trouble with improperly loading the next round.

Iv been deer hunting with a kimber target that I converted to 460 rowland for years now prefer to use hard cast or underwood xtream defender or xtream penetrator bullets with reloads because I found that hollowpoints tended to just flat out blow up like a bomb and only penetrate a couple inches because the speed was just to much for the 45 acp bullets.

I worked up a load for my 460 Rowland. I’m using a 200 grain Hard cast coated bullet from Bayou Bullets with 11.5 grains of CFE Pistol and Remington primers. I’m getting an average velocity of 1419 fps. I haven’t done any penetration tests yet but look forward to it. I did try a hotter load but had signs of excess pressure so I settled on the load mentioned.
Those 185 gr XTP’s aren’t recommended for velocities over 1200- 1300 fps so at 1500 fps your just not getting the best performance out of that bullet.
