    Hannah was right about Nick subconsciously wanting to stay with Amy! In the book, Nick is morbidly a little turned on by Amy’s psychotic scheming. He realizes he could never be happy with a normal woman after being in a marriage with someone who “knew” him well enough to destroy him.

    In the book, Amy described their relation as this, “Nick and I fit together. I am a little too much, and he is a little too little. I am a thorn-bush, bristling from the over-attention of my parents, and he is a man of a million little fatherly stab wounds, and my thorns fit perfectly into them.”

    Rosamund Pike’s performance is so layered and brilliantly done. You question how much of her displayed self is performance; the Amy she shows varies from person to person; her tone, her voice, everything-where does the mask end and the real face begin? Or is she only a mask over a hollow, hungry ego

      She's like my mum (and me). We notice tropes, camera movements, subtle things without really understanding what it means. Basically, when done right with directing and editing, you can def pick it up.
      Shitty movies who have twists out of nowhere fail in that department so that's why they have no idea.
      For instance, My mum was watching a show and then the next scene from the inside shot, was a wide shot of the outside of the building they were in. I instantly said, 'It's gonna explode' and it did. Mum didn't know how I knew, but subconsciously you can pick up on these little tricks. It's not totally about being smart af. Just observant!
      I feel like Hannah, the more she watches, is really picking up on little things that Ash isn't noticing much. It's pretty cool to watch.

    The book explains that Nick has a habit of smiling at inopportune &/or inappropriate moments. It's just a character trait or character flaw, depending on the circumstances. But in the circumstance that it appears that something bad has happened to his wife, that character trait/flaw, makes him look extremely guilty. That woman that came up & stole a picture, told him to smile - so he did. It happened quickly, & he didn't know how to avoid it. She however had noticed him smile in the press conference, probably assumed he was guilty of the worst, & wanted to capitalize on that character flaw, to emphasize his assumed guilt. To make him look bad because of assumed guilt.
    I'm sure something that happens in real cases of criminal investigations & suspected crimes. Certain people decide early on that someone is guilty, & do their best to insert themselves into the situation, & try to incriminate the "suspect"even further, just by using the situation or character traits to their advantage.
    It's well known by now that sometimes criminal suspects, especially those who are NOT family, will insert themselves into a criminal investigation, in a vigil, or victim search, or whatever, to both flaunt their success(of the crime), & to gather information about how much information/evidence the police investigators have.
    This movie shows that the criminals/ suspects aren't the only ones who will insert themselves into the situation.
    The author, as you will see, was very clever, & knowledgeable, about people's habits & characters, as well as about criminal investigations, & forensics.

      From what I remember his smiling habit wasnt described so nicely, his smiles are usually described as smarmy and slick. He wants to be liked by everyone and thought of as a good guy which is why he also lies a lot. He smiles in inappropriate moments because he doesnt know how to be honest and its his go to for making people like him, until he ends up lashing out impulsively.

    • @IChooseJesus9091
      @IChooseJesus9091 Год назад +1

      @@BambiLena666 + Whatever. That sounds like interpretation to me. Also - you gotta remember much of the way he was described came from his wife, who admitted to embellishing a fake diary, & was a deeply disturbed person in her own right. HOW you described it is not what or how I remember it. But even if that IS what was described, he was innocent, & being framed for a murder that never even happened. Meanwhile she herself became a murderer. And wanting to be liked is not a crime. Cheating & lying, while they may not ethical, or spiritually moral, are not technically crimes, unless it's a legal document or under oath. And not being socially adept is not a crime either. Honestly he struck me as a little bit on the spectrum.

    • @BambiLena666
      @BambiLena666 Год назад +3

      @@IChooseJesus9091 Also a lot about Nick is from Nicks POV. He says himself he has a face of a trust fund jerk that you want to punch and that he smiles a lot to seem nicer and friendlier and that "it doesnt always work". He talks and thinks about wanting to be seen as a good man and his lying usually in his interactions with/thoughts of his sister. Theres tons of interactions peppered through his chapters. Like the lady that was hitting on him, even his sister keeps telling him to do better keeping distance, but he cant, he also doesnt know how to act to show concern for his wife. Until he ends up impulsively exploding on the lady in the diner and pissing her off.
      I never got vibes that Nick was on the spectrum, I would need to read it again, but hes too good at handling his mistress (in the book his POVs include her a lot more), and when he decides on a clear role to play for Amy and the media to get Amy to come back. Hes also seen as fairly charming by others.
      And yeah obviously none of these are crimes. I never said they were. Im not at all disputing the second half of your original comment, I completely agree with that. Im just adding that its wasnt just cause Nick has a random habit of smiling in inappropriate situations. Nick has a whole set of bad traits that along with Amys planning and staging made him look suspicious as all hell.

    Hannah--those big homes in many places in the US, especially in the midwest, are quite affordable. You don't have to be crazy rich to own one. Location is actually a big factor in the film concerning the relationship between Nick and Amy. She feels superior to him based on where they're both from-she's from NYC and he's from Missouri. She calls him "fly over" boy which is a reference to a derogatory term those who live on the coasts in say, NYC, LA, Boston, SF have for the middle of the country that they just 'fly over". Which caused him, of course to resent her.

    I did an english literature degree at university, and during one class in 2020 we were doing an exercise where we came up with different categories of monsters in story telling. One of my suggestions was the 'human monster', when its not a metaphorical creature and its just a psychotic regular person, and I gave Patrick Bateman from American Psycho and Amy Dunne from Gone Girl as examples.
    All of the 20 year old girls in the class immediately turned around and collectively interrupted me to say "no you dont understand, Amy Dunne was the HERO in Gone Girl"
    Im not exaggerating, all of them.
    I made the decision to never be alone in a room with any of them if I could avoid it.

    What I always love about this movie is how they bring Amy down to size so quickly. In the world she came from with all the rich, unsuspecting people she is the alpha predator genius, but once she gets into the real world they see through her immediately and she realizes she's nothing and has to go back to where she can be an alpha predator again. The entire ending only works because of her families social status, she would never be able to manipulate people in the real world that way.

       @Josh-tn9qe I'm dealing with a different version of this scenario right now. Living in shared accommodation on a temporary basis. But lo and behold found out real quick that one of the female occupants is indeed a sociopathic, psychotic narcissist. She shows all the same attributes, mannerisms and characteristics that fit the profile of Amy in the movie. She is broken, insecure, co-dependant, unloved, lonely etc, all most likely tracing back to a troubled childhood. And now she is acting out that trauma through violent aggressive behaviour against anyone she can't have her way with. Her actions have already coerced and forced out 4 male tenants over the period of a year under threat of sexual or physical manipulation or violence. They've been to scared or ill equipped to handle her so have had to leave for their own well being. She has tried to employ the same bag of tricks with me but they aren't working and she doesn't like that fact, someone who has come into her territory which she can't control or have power over.
      She has already resorted to black magic, poisoning me, trying to murder me. I am sure she has plenty more attempts lined up to set me up etc. She like most of these broken beings have lent their souls over to the dark forces of this world and she is working at the behest of these forces to take down people like me who will not bend the knee to this darkness they work on behalf of.
      The Landlords can't see her for what she is and are none the wiser to what she is up too, as only people like me are trained to see the mask and what lurks behind it. I have had to put measures into place to catch her and supply them with the necessary evidence. As to what happens once the sufficient amount of evidence has been collated and collected is entirely up to them. This may even end up going to court possibly. Will have to wait and see. It is a very delicate, sophisticated and long term chess game of cat and mouse when dealing with these wicked beings. Because they are under abnormal and otherworldly possession by powers beyond this physical world that most humans think is all there is in life. Even the good book makes its pretty clear.
      Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places
      She however is digging her own grave, and she can go ahead and put all the work in she likes to dig that grave for herself. I'm just here to stick her in it when the time is right (checkmate). I've cast down and buried multiple demons before her, she is no different. Different demon, same destination. I'm like the character Constantine from the 2005 movie with Keanu Reeves at this point lol, no exaggeration, good movie worth watching. The Kingdom of Darkness keeps sending me these demons to play with. I keep sending them back lol. Kinda getting tiring at this point but hey ho, the fun never stops, let the game continue. I don't fear them, they feed of your fear, this bitch is like pennywise lmao. Total clown!
      Nothing more amusing for a holy man of god, than battling the kingdom of darkness and all it's monstrosities, all the while having a smile on your face and sense of humour whilst doing it. It's irritating those forces within her to no end because I'm ten steps ahead of her and them. Not just anyone can handle this kind of foe, you don't send a human to take down a demon, you send an angel. I'm just a messenger and deliverer of justice and she is about to be served in a spiritual capacity beyond her ability to reckon.
      I almost feel sorry for what is coming to her, but hey karma's a bitch. I'm just her to make sure it's delivered.
      Be careful what you sow, for what you sow so shall you reap.
      Galatians 6:7

    I don't really know much about how home buying works in the UK, so forgive me if this is obvious information. But in the USA most home buyers, especially first time home buyers, typically only pay a small down payment on their homes with the vast majority of the home being owned by the bank until that loan is payed off, often 30 or more years later. So while the home they were living in may have looked very impressive it is likely they owned only a fraction of it and if both lost their jobs, they would soon be unable to make payments to the bank meaning they could very quickly lose their fancy home. Just to say, the fact they lived in a large beautiful home really doesn't say much about the state of their finances.
