Imo the film opens up when you realize, that Kelly-Anne isn't our audience surrogate into the Ludovic Chevalier murder trial. Rather, the murder trial is our window into the character of Kelly-Anne; she's the main subject of the film.
I love that she remains an enigma to us when the end credits roll and director/writer Pascal Plante never reveals what she thinks and why she does what she does. That is what truly makes Kelly-Anne spine-chilling to me and what sets her apart from Clementine, who wears her feelings on the outside.

I believe Kelly Anne dressed as Camille because it was Chevalier's birthday. She wanted to give him a gift!

  • @jackspawn77771

I posted this almost a year ago and this analysis reminded me of this:
"That's what I love, seeing them lose everything." Kelly Anne was playing poker with Chevalier, Camille's family, Clementine and the authorities. Chevalier lost his claim to innocence, Camille's family was devastated by seeing the truth of their daughter's murder, the authorities looked inept by being gift wrapped hard evidence by a stranger, Clementine lost her belief in Chevalier's innocence. Even Kelly Anne lost her modeling career which was her real life version of going full tilt at the poker table when she cosplayed as Camille in the courtroom. Ultimately Kelly Anne won her jackpot by accomplishing her goal of everyone involved in her game losing everything, actually winning the Camille video and the added bonus of taking the selfie in Camille's bedroom. The game started with seeking out and buying access to real Red Rooms then turned into obsession once Chevalier was exposed and arrested. Kelly Anne felt personally attached to the case since she was there in essence from the beginning. A great film whose heart of darkness centered around a truly morally ambiguous central character in the beautiful, enigmatic Kelly Anne.
*I like your line "Doing good things for the wrong reasons." as it's quite apropos.

She's an evil in the way hybristophiles are evil, but she makes a bid for redemption in the end and succeeds. Kelly Anne is a hybristophile, but she doesn't lie to herself about it the way Clementine does. Clementine is attracted to the killer because he's a killer, but she cons herself by creating excuses for her feelings which would accord with her self concept when she convinces herself that he's innocent. Kelly Anne is also attracted to him, which is why she's interested in the case in the first place, and if there was any doubt about this, it's done away with in the scene where she appears in court dressed like one of his victims. Observe her demeanor. It's the most emotionally animated she is during the entire film, almost as if during that scene she's dropping her icy exterior, and you get a glimpse of her infatuation with the killer. It's because she's in full on shameless groupie mode and she basically destroys her career over it. But there's character development. In the end, Chevalier ends up losing his trial because Kelly Anne used her Machiavellian sociopathy powers for good. Why she does this isn't exactly clear though. I suspect it had something to do with Clementine.

    • @christiandetailer
      @christiandetailer Месяц назад

Agreed. It's a great film about being a hybristophile.

I think there are several legitimate interpretations of why Kelly-Ann chooses to expose Chevalier. If you remember the scene on the train with Clementine, she says, "you have to find emotional players and exploit them. You take your time, you're patient, and you bleed them dry. That's what I love, seeing them lose everything." There's clearly a certain power-hungriness that shapes Kelly-Ann's actions and I don't think Chevalier was exempt from that desire to dominate and leave bankrupt, despite Kelly-Ann's feelings for him. Perhaps that was her way of "getting over him".
Perhaps the reason is even darker. Perhaps Kelly-Ann started to fully embody the "character" of Camille and did only what she thought Camille would do in that situation. There's a scene of Kelly-Ann dressed as Camille looking into the mirror on the night she gives Camille's mother the pen-drive with the video on it. I don't think it's a coincidence that the only times we really see Kelly-Ann lose herself is when she's dressed as Camille.
On the character of Clementine, she is merely a reflection of Kelly-Ann. She has all of Kelly-Ann's feelings for Chevalier but none of the overt emotional baggage that Clementine is constantly struck by throughout the film. Perhaps Kelly-Ann, being someone of very few emotions, may have been allowed to process her feelings for Chevalier vicariously through Clementine, something her clear sociopathy could not allow her to do any other way. I think that's why she took pity on her; when she looked at Clementine, she was able to understand herself a bit better. Maybe she even felt vindicated that someone other than herself could possibly be in love with someone accused of such heinous things. I think that's way she was mad at Clementine for leaving. When Clementine left she took her vindication of Kelly-Ann's feelings for Chevalier along with her.

    • @maggyfrog
      @maggyfrog День назад +1

my initial takeaway is that kelly-anne is basically a day-walker until she reveals her nature in public when she dressed up like one of the victims, camille in particular because the video on her hasn't surfaced to authorities yet. just like how she played poker, she treated this whole thing like some kind of game even to the point where her career is essentially over because of the stunt. the thrill of winning enough bitcoins to outbid everyone in the auction, the thrill of seeing the video herself and taking selfies as "camille" in the kid's own bedroom, the thrill of having been in the trial and getting her "notice me senpai" moment, it was all so creepy and calculated and she reveled in all of it.
i don't think that kelly-anne is a good person at all, but for some reason, she valued what clementine thought of her, and clementine calling her out like that is something she never had to confront before. in the end, she decides that she can't lose the game and essentially "folds" by leaving camille's video for her mother to find. the fact that she took selfies in her bedroom is her personal trophy. she knows she needs to remain a day-walker and not lose this game of poker within society. the most that the press can do to her at this point is just say that her edgy stunts crossed a line, but she remains a day-walker. it's unclear to me whether clementine put 2 and 2 together to realize how really disturbed kelly-anne really is.
she's like a really sophisticated and super careful dark creature. not the kind that does the physical preying like ludovic but she's essentially the target audience for it.

I agree, I don't think Kelly Ann's motivation was virtuous. I think she left the video on the mother's bedside table mostly to farther torment her, making her see the video of her daughter's torture. If she simply wanted to provide evidence rather than horrify the mother, she could have left it with the police. Also there was no virtue in her dressing up as Camille and taking a picture of herself in her bedroom.

I just watched it and was scared at first, it could be some jump scare horror thriller movie which handles red rooms as a given fact and plays like SAW, but luckily it was the opposite.
It understood the morbid facination of snuff films around the internet pretty good. It is not about the gore in general, it is about the dark thrill and fear of the content, which can never be unseen again and deeply shakes the core of many who witnessed it.
They also handle the explanation about TOR pretty well and when it comes to the story, it really does not matter if the snuff content was distributed as a single video or part of a stream.
For me personally Kelly Anne is a vision of one the many infamous users who are always ready to go a step further, beyond the breaking point.
They go by as unseen, but once someone gets in touch with their true nature, they are shocked in horror (like clementine).
You never really get to know their motives, as it lays behind many anonymous acts they play.
That might be, why Kelly Anne lost her cool once the KI told the joke about the ghost.
I also like her appearance in this role. She is the opposite of what once would imagine a snuff content user looks like.

i have doubts that kelly-anne did what she did because she somehow had good intentions. for me, it goes back to what she said about her poker philosophy, that folding and cutting your losses early is just part of the game and emotional players are there for her to exploit and bleed dry. so her gift wrapping the last video for the authorities to close the case is part of her game, not a moral sense of duty to help the victims, i mean she even took freaking selfies in the kid's bedroom as her trophy. she both won and let go of the prize because she needs to keep blending in with society. had she kept the video to herself, she realized that she'd bound to make a mistake and she'll be caught with it. so better cut her losses now because longevity is her real endgame.
a truly modern-day creeper she is.

Wild movie - I absolutely loved it and there's so much to think about. I feel like Clementine left because she was bitter that Kelly Ann bursted her fantasy world that she was living in, and she was resentful - she didn't want to see the light. I feel like Kelly-Ann felt like she failed to protect Clementine and as a result felt guilt - like the guilt of the mother of the 13 year old whose video was missing. Kelly Ann started in unravel then, after losing her new friend and became all consumed and she dressed up like the killer's type to get a 'real' reaction from him, so she can experience the look in his eyes just like the actual victim would have seen. It was almost like she became the embodiment of the 13 year old's spirit when she dressed up like her - like she had taken over Kelly-Ann's body in order to resolve her own death and find justice. All the while Kelly-Ann sacrifices her identity, her job/future work. It was horrific to give the mother the proof, but it was the ultimate form of closure and the death nail to put the killer away. It's like in haunted house movies where the spirit haunts the inhabitants until they can't fully pass on until they're death is resolved, this is symbolically what happens to Kelly-Ann as she essentially becomes the vengeful spirit and walks off, fading into the darkness after she provides the evidence, finally able to rest. In terms of the desire 'to win' - it is wild to think that she would be willing to perform a necessary evil to find closure, whereas the mother is incapable -- it's almost like a 'one-man ship' thing of 'look who cares more' / 'look who is willing to go to extreme lengths' in a sick way.

I loved the film but have to admit
I don’t fully get it but I want to
Why did she dress up as the young girl in court?
What was the creepy wave about from the killer?
And..what was she actually bidding for at the end?
I thought the girls were already dead???
And if it was a recording, how was that anymore damning evidence than the footage the court already had??
Maybe I’m missing some subtle nuisances due to it being French??
I was highly enthralled and entertained but a little tossed around in terms of steady motivation or clear cause and effect flow in the story
This is more of an analysis of interpretation than the movie itself being explained
The movie DOES look amazing! Especially on my brand new 80” TV
