@@CarMechaNick it's ok it was meant as one, and it's true. it's an essential service. i recently bought a 2007 sonata with 147,00 miles on it. i,m the third owner, and it's got complete maintanance records from the previous 2 owners which were family members. runs great, little 2.4 4 popper has power, transmission is fine, and i just got the oil changed, and i got it for only $1800. even though its running fine, the engine light came on shortly after the oil change and i noticed a slight, i think it was lifters ticking. first thing i did was take it to oreillys and they scanned it and the printout said i had a 6 cylinder and i needed a new timing belt that cost about $40. then my mechanic cousin said my car dont take belts they take chains and my engine is a 4 cylinder. so i then take it to auto zone for a scan and it came back all i need is an oil control valve. i told the guy there what oriellys said and he said he thinks they forgot to clear the info from the last car they scanned. i'm told the OCV is an easy fix but i better start saving my pennies because it;s due for a new timing chain at 150000 miles.
Great video! We just had a 2011 Sonata that was sitting on our lot for sale throw a rod bearing during the test drive. Looks like I might have to do one of these, but it looks like a piece of cake!
DAM GOOD WORK very informative it gave me a better perspective right now my daughter owns a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe and they're giving her brief because her engine blew but it's supposed to be covered under a lawsuit a class action lawsuit that Hyundai knew there was a problem with the engine but never fixed it so now her car is under a recall and they're giving her some grief but it's good to see how you can get the motor out I like that thank you
I do just about everything. I started my career in a transmission shop, went through the retail service centers and finally ended up here. Haha. We have four of us in the shop. Two guys on customer cars, one guy on recons, and then there is myself. I do the big jobs for most of the stores in my area. So i stay pretty busy on the heavy side. I would do diag videos but those are more on the boring side. Ive seen everything from blown out spark plug holes from sketchy mechanics to water and candy in the gas tank. Never a dull moment in the used car biz.
So you're replacing an engine that replaced the original? I have a 2012 and the engine blew up before warranty expired and Hyundai put a used engine back in and it has terrible blow by but the warranty is past now. I'm thinking about putting another engine in.
Everything seems to be holding up with mine. I never garage it. If yours has been maintained I probably stick the money back in to it. You're going to spend at least $6,000 to 8,000 on clapped out crap.
Junk that sucka lol. Their gdi engine is crap. Pretty much anything after 2010. I have an 09 sonata that’s still going strong thanks to her DOHC engine. Way superior to the gdi.
I pulled the long block. A short block would not include the cylinder head. Typically when you get a unit from a junk/salvage yard, its a long block that includes the oil pan. Atleast from where we get them. The only one that shouldn't have a pan would be a brand new/remanufactured unit, those typically come bare.
When we get a reman its bare bones. No oil pan, oil pick up, valve covers, everything has to be swapped. But the junkyard will usually supply intake and such. If your engine blew up, make sure to check intake for debris if you have to reuse your old one. Good luck!
How much would you charge in labor to do a removal and installation in a 2002 Hyundai Elantra? I just got quoted a ball park of $4,000.00 labor only and that seems a bit pricey to me.
I'm getting this done right now to my car had 130,000 miles on it and the only reason why they're doing it for free is because I got all oil changes done the dealership
I can’t turn the flywheel and I’ve already disassembled everything but the transmission. What do you recommend I do to turn the flywheel. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
The motor are free due to knock sensor if ur motor locks up send it to Hyundai new motor at no cost to u my 2012 is in the shop as I write this comment
I just had my engine replaced and then shortly after the driver side inner cv axel boot was "torn". The dealership who did the engine replacement said they wouldn't be near the inner boot during replacement. Do you think its possible they could have tore it? The car only has 60k miles on it. Thanks for the video.
So I don't remove the entire assembly, it calls for that process. Which if they followed that process it's possible. But the way I remove just the long block I don't have to mess with the driver axle. I do remove the bracket that holds the passenger side axle to the block. I don't remove the axle, just the bracket.
Is it possible that a clock spring in the SRS airbag system could break when doing a long block. My SRS airbag light came on the day I hit the car out of the shop
Would this be done the same for a 2.7L engine? Also does the transmission have to come out to get to the engine if the engine is locked. I think someone may be feeding me some BS.
It would make easier to sort out it the trans comes out. Doing a locked up motor is honestly no fun. Probably the worst. And I do literally everything. Pretty different for the 2.7 too.
So after looking at 400 hoses that mostly pertain to emissions... My Stepdad could change a Beetle motor in 15 minutes, and they got 35 mpg or better. For all the progress, I'm still looking for the improvements. He built a 289 Ford pushing 504 HP at 9000 RPM and raced it all season long. That was in 1968 when he was black flagged, "Teched" and cleared. 167.876 MPH lap speed @ Daytona. Modified '67 Shelby GT350. He was the first I knew of to stand on the throttle in the turns. Chevy Guys figured they need to reverse their engine rotation all of a sudden. ;-)

At Kia we have 1 tech that can do an entire engine in 2.5 hours. I personally can do one in about 6 hours tops. It’s about 2 hours average to remove and another 2 to reinstall
I have to pull the engine from my 2012 tucson 2.4ltr. Have you done one of them too by chance? Curious if it can come out the top, or bottom only. I can do it in my garage if it'll come out the top, or I'll have to make other arraignments to extract it from the bottom.
I've done them it's just been a while. I feel it will be able to come out the top you may need to remove the intake manifold or the exhaust just to make it skinny.
Have you ever removed an engine like this from the top I'm taking on this project with a 16 kia optima in my garage. So obviously out the top may be easier. Thanks
I truly dig how you were removing the Alternator cable BEFORE you removed the battery!

I take that as a huge compliment thanks! Just trying to save these cars lives, but all they need are blood transfusions every 3-5k miles!

I always say we are like doctors as well........good job on this engine removal......
Lol people have no idea how much work that is thanks for the video man I think I’ll be paying a mechanic to swap mine out.

I have a question where can I find an engine to replace mines? If you have an idea
Check junkyards for used, and you can always check dealer. But prepare for a large bill.

Hey man, if the motor is seized, would you recommend taking it out with the transmission? Or just disconnect crank to turn it
You could try to get things loose and if that doesn't work you'll have to take the trans with it. Whichever you'd prefer.

I honestly can’t remember. I should have thought more wisely about my titles. 🤦♂️
HI CM !!... Have you removed an sonata or optima hybrid engine ? similar procedure? can it be done from top?
I'm sure I have and yeah from the top easy one take off the intake manifold. Super easy and gives you lots of room to remove accessories.
What is the piece of aluminum hanging on back of engine block?
What state are u in?
Do any brake lines need removal or opened up?

Yes it is.
is this the same removal for a 2018 sante fe?

There is a sticker, should be on the inside of hood, or on the radiator support area.

Was that Milwaukee mid- torque if so how you like it
I just play with the trigger. I always torque wheels though. I LOVE my Milwaukee tools!
These engines are probably even worse than the Chrysler 2.7L v6. Are tired of replacing them yet?
🤣😂 That is hilarious! Chrysler does a fantastic job of making sure us mechanics have something to do. 😁
Love the air ratchet
Any ratchet I don't have to crank myself is a win.
So I have a 2013 hyundai santa fe NA and planning on putting the turbo motor in it would it be a drop in plus ECU.
That's a good question 🤔 I'm not real sure. That sounds like it may work. Seems easier with a 5 spd.
May wanna clean off that camera lens. Great job on the engine.
I agree I need to just periodically clean it when I move the camera. Thanks for watching!
