    CORRECTION: White noise is equal energy per frequency. Pink noise is filtered 3 DB per octave to compensate for a doubling of frequencies per octave.
    Just an FYI from an old sound guy:)
    Great video series boys, it sure brings back some great memories. God I miss those days..

    I was at a RUSH show in Indianapolis and for whatever reason Alex lost power, he was up on stage for a few minutes with no sound. He started getting a little impatient because everybody was focused on him, I bet somebody heard about it later.

    But then again, being a famous rock star drummer. You get very rich, famous, and remembered forever depending on the situation. : )

    well....that's what Neil always said...if he couldn't make it as a musician (paid) he would make a living doing whatever and then play the type of music he liked. And he was Totally content with that.

    @ram6speed Incorrect. It's equal energy at each frequency in order to equalize said frequencies.

  • @MelodicRadiation21
    @MelodicRadiation21 13 лет назад +1

    @ram6speed Yes you are. But so is the guy in the video. White noise is equal energy for all hertz (Hz) that is to say every frequency has an equal amount of energy. They take pink noise and invert the spectrum on their equalizer. The goal is to get a flat EQ response in the room for the PA. You aren't wrong, but neither is he.

  • @alexxj220
    @alexxj220 13 лет назад +1

    @ram6speed "Pink noise is a type of signal that contains all of the sound frequencies that fall within the range of a human being’s hearing " from a website.
    This bloke works with rush and you still disagree. Fuck if he told me pink noise was little cats running up and down the cables id beleive him.

    @highspooky In other words, in the segment, he talks about Alex being picky about his mix because it's hard to get the guitar to cut through. Then, he goes on to explain the fact that the room sounds different whenever there is the slightest change. My point: the room shouldn't matter. IF they are listening to live mics that they use to blend in for a more "live" sound, and Alex is complaining...it's not a hard fix. At that point, you know why it's washy. Easy fix. : )

  • @yngvaigilbsteen
    @yngvaigilbsteen 15 лет назад +2

    You know what's weird? Perhaps someone can shed some light. The monitor guy talks about Alex's guitar being difficult to mix (to satisfy Alex) based on what the room sounds like. Rush uses in-ear monitors.....What the room sounds like doesn't matter.
    The only thing I can figure is that the mics hanging on the front of their mic stands are for blending in live room "spread." In which case...if it's too washy for Alex...turn down the mic mix, or boost the direct signal. Not hard at all lol

  • @yngvaigilbsteen
    @yngvaigilbsteen 14 лет назад +1

    @highspooky Not quite sure I understand what you are trying to say. It sounds like English may be a second language for you? : )
    In-ear monitors are so that you don't hear the room and you have complete control over your entire mix. In fact, if you have custom molds, like they do, the fit should cut out about 40db, or so of ambient noise. They are probably listening to mics in the room that they use to blend in with the direct signals. If guitar is washy, just pull down the mics. : )

    @highspooky micing "Direct Instruments" ( DI'd Instruments ) could effectively introduce phase cancellation. the di signal moving in and out of phase with a mic is super unpleasant to the ear at high volumes...

  • @yngvaigilbsteen
    @yngvaigilbsteen 14 лет назад

    @highspooky No prob about the English. : )
    Yes, there are many people who can hear the difference between cables and batteries and grass. Eric Johnson is one of them, and I'm another. : ) My point, though...is if you have big rubber stoppers stuffed in your ears...you're not hearing the room...no matter how good you are. : ) That's the point of ear buds. A consistent sound, every night...from venue to venue.

    • @michaelwoods9005
      @michaelwoods9005 7 лет назад

      yngvaigilbsteen Eric Johnson can hear the difference in batteries in super-sensitive circuits like a fuzz face pedal. that's not hard to do.
      I read a recent interview with EJ and the interviewer asked the battery question; frustrated, Eric responded with "you know, that was like, a two-second decision I made 30 years ago, it's not a big deal. it's not like I sit around sawing batteries open and analyzing the components".

    The original production engineers of this video series needs to be fired. Obviously you can see SOME things, but the contrast throughout is horrid. Too dark, so dark it takes away from the enjoyment. Other docs on them are alright, though. Not sure what's going on, but this original recording needs visual remastering, so we can actually SEE everything.
