Love that he goes for the Beatles Rubber Soul sound. That's always been my favorite of theirs. Those awesome Billy Joel lyrics. Great musical sensibility and timing. Always with the interesting choices.
I’ve always felt “Laura” was the Beatles tribute. When I was a teenager I actually convinced my Lennon loving mom that it was an unreleased song on April fools day. But, there are prints of the Beatles influence all over the nylon curtain. It came out 2 years after John’s murder, so it’s a safe bet some of the writing was done while mourning.
@@gypsydonovan if you look into the making of this album, a tribute to John Lennon was exactly what Billy Joel was going for. I’m with you on Laura. It’s one of my favorites, but it’s a common theme throughout the whole album.
This is actually a brilliant observation about how to get along with and understand others even when your perspectives disagree on a surface level because we all have the same base needs and satisfy them in our own respective ways. Example: keeping up with TV shows (youtubers today) or crime reports (politics on the internet) for entertainment...pills (drugs) razor blades (self-harm) to - unhealthily - cope with mental health crisis...yoga and beer as relaxation techniques...love (romance) and sex (fucking) as intimacy...so on and so forth
Exactly, Barbara Hernandez Pacheco! I first purchased Billy Joel's 1982 Album "The Nylon Curtain" in August of 1982-in Houston, Texas-right before my time in the eleventh grade in high school-at age 17 years and 5 months. I am STILL listening to this album as of Wednesday, May 21'st, 2020-at the age of 55 years/2 months/5 days! I really enjoy it; of ALL of Billy Joel's album-"The Nylon Curtain" is my favorite!
You've got diamonds and I've got spades You've got pills And I've got razor blades You've got yoga honey I've got beer You got overpriced And I got weird But it's alright We're the same even though we're alone It's alright Yes we all need a room of our own You've got love darlin' I've got sex You've got cash, mama And I've got checks You've got business, baby I've got the kids You got crowded just the way I did But it's alright Cause we all need a place to call home It's alright Yes we all need a room of our own I can still remember packed together Like a can of sardines No, no, no Pushin', shovin' That's when lovin' Starts to come apart at the seams Oh no, no, no, no You've got the day shift I've got nights We go wrong at times But we've got rights You've got TV shows I've got crime But you've got your room, honey And I've got mine It's alright It's the one thing that we should have known Yes, it's alright Yes, we all need a room of our own And it's alright Yes we all need a place to call home It's alright Yes we all need a room of our own It's alright It's alright To have a room of your own No, no, no, it's alright Yeah it's alright mama To have a room of our own Sometimes you've got to get away Got to get away Got to get away Got to get away to a room of our own Got to have a room Got to have a little elbow room of my own.
Andrea,I like your comment. I heard some happiness in the Christi years music. I always heard happiness at live shows. All though the one time I got to the 2nd row I saw him angry with me having fun (he mocked my singing and from that point on there were no longer seats that clouds available to anyone but the very attractive and young female. I feel like i inspired him in someway. Any how,I continue to pray that the likes of Billy Joel and even Jimmy Buffett find God.
One finds God by looking within and not by judging others. In other words... please remove that 2x4 out of your own eye before you go pointing out the specks in they eyes of others.
I know people compare this to the Beatles, but the keyboards and vocals sound more like Ray Charles to me. In either case, great artists are usually influenced by other great artists.
This song is very interesting because the song is from the point of view a new romance where the husband (or boyfriend) acts like his father; who happens to rich and wealthy and the wifey (or old lady *) acts like her auntie {who she does lovE} who is just rich and famous. Both are frustrated, but the daughter wants to be perfect like her mom and dad but in reality... "Gotta Get Away." Right, Unc? lol
39 years later...Billy STILL rules! WOOOOOOOOOO
"You got yoga, honey, I got beer." - Billy Joel's 1982 prediction of my life 30 years later. And dead-on accurate.
Interesting, James!
nonnenja2281 maybe he meant beer and yoga like “beer yoga” lol

Fuckin hey i love the Nylon Curtain and ive never heard anyone do The Beatles sound justice. Billy nails it on this tune and Laura.
There's also a touch of the Who.
don't know about that, and I love both "bands".

@@duanemorrison6994 Yes, thought the same. Maybe because the bass goes John Entwistle.

Love the bass! Fantastic song and a nifty Beatles tribute.
@bassmanjoe yes indeed gone too soon wish we could figure out manic depressive before they end their lives.
funny, but I don't like the bass here, esp right b4 the chorus.

One of my favorite songs from the Nylon Curtain!
Gigantesco Piano Man!!!
It's like a combination of 3 Beatles songs - Can't Buy Me Love + She's a Woman + Wild Honey Pie.
'diamonds' def a nod to Can't Buy Me Love.
Very cool song
Billy joel is the only one wonderful artist
This is an amazing song. Too bad it's extremely underrated.
"Underrated" by whom?

We DO need rooms of our own!
Beatles state of mind, first line My love don't bring me presents!
Poor Billy. This song is secretly a record describing the breakdown of his marriage to Elizabeth :(
Go Billy go .... Piano Man The Best ....
You got it and we need it
This is really good ♥️

I find this album fun!
Nice bass!👍🏻Mr. Stegmeyer, I suppose?!

This song would have fit perfectly on the white album.
And it would have been better than 1/3 of the songs on it!
Oh i hear the mid Beatley period sounds...wow all over the place...another deep cut.
You've got diamonds and I've got spades
You've got pills
And I've got razor blades
You've got yoga honey
I've got beer
You got overpriced
And I got weird
But it's alright
We're the same even though we're alone
It's alright
Yes we all need a room of our own
You've got love darlin'
I've got sex
You've got cash, mama
And I've got checks
You've got business, baby
I've got the kids
You got crowded just the way I did
But it's alright
Cause we all need a place to call home
It's alright
Yes we all need a room of our own
I can still remember packed together
Like a can of sardines
No, no, no
Pushin', shovin'
That's when lovin'
Starts to come apart at the seams
Oh no, no, no, no
You've got the day shift
I've got nights
We go wrong at times
But we've got rights
You've got TV shows
I've got crime
But you've got your room, honey
And I've got mine
It's alright
It's the one thing that we should have known
Yes, it's alright
Yes, we all need a room of our own
And it's alright
Yes we all need a place to call home
It's alright
Yes we all need a room of our own
It's alright
It's alright
To have a room of your own
No, no, no, it's alright
Yeah it's alright mama
To have a room of our own
Sometimes you've got to get away
Got to get away
Got to get away
Got to get away to a room of our own
Got to have a room
Got to have a little elbow room of my own.

The piano riff sounds a lot like Elton John's "All the Girls love Alice" riff
Absolutly.👍
"You got overpriced and I got weird." Lol!
stlii keeps me company, it's weird
I'm with you, Mike Dean!
YOU GOT PILLS AND I GET RAZOR BLADES......
I have a feeling that people are not picking up on what that could mean. :D

I imagine joe cocker singing this

I'm a Bernie Dem and I love BEBE STrump. Why can't we all get together and help?
Similar to The Beatles She's A Woman.
Your right about angry women in my life.

When I saw the title, I thought the song was gonna be sexual.
Rubber Joel.
