This is awesome. The treadmill one could fit all kinds of barrels on it for the cost of running one of the store bought ones. I enjoyed seeing all the creative minds at work 😀👍
My buddy quincey and i are just starting out and we love your videos. This is so helpful for newcomers on a budget to think differently and find better solutions
Since I'm a person of maintenance I can hear your smoke alarm or smoke alarms asking for batteries or saying that their end-of-life has been reached and that's why they beep every minute
That's a radiator hose clamp and the only thing I do is replace the cord with a GFCI breaker inline just cause of the water even though it's a small amount .and never install a wheel directly on a motor IF it's not made with a shaft for that purpose...I'm also a big fan of the reostat or dimmer switch ppl call them it will allow you to adjust the speed Awesome vid Dave
Great inspirations there hahaha Thank you very much for all theses sharing. I'm new in your channel and either in lapidary. I love it so much. Thanks again and a big hug from Laurentides, Québec 🤟💪🥳
I am thankful for you Dave. With your help I managed to build my own flatlap 2 years ago from some scrap wood, the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, a used motor I bought off ebay, and a set of disc to grind on. It works like a charm thanks to your guidance. Many of us just refuse to spend thousands of dollars on high end machines and can still enjoy the hobby on self built equipment thanks to people like you helping us stubble our way to success. Forgot to mention I coated all the wood with fiberglass resin to preserve it as long as possible, especially the top.
I loved the "Intro ends at 2:20 title"! I might have skipped ahead except that was kind of gracious and I thought I'd give you the view time and a like comment and subscribe too.
I traveled to one of the Mexican sources of Crazy Lace agate. Just as in 9:58 tires were used, dozens of go-cart ties about 6 inches across and 3 1/2 to 4" deep with simple wooden cut outs to seal everything. turning at 3 second revolutions. The place looked like a family ran business and was a impressive place to visit.
That’s awesome that you know it’s from an ice cream maker thank you so much for enjoying the video of the city actually does a lot of hate I really appreciate your kindness
You have a pretty cool channel I know you know your stuff because my dad is a lapidary man he has some machines from the 50s bunch of antiques and he still uses them he has all those wheels that you have diamond wheels diamond saw blades tumblers polishers he even went to quartzite and Tucson you guys have a lot in common you reminded me of him thanks for the great channel.
Wow! What a fun vid. Yes, I’m one of those using a Harbor Freight drill press already and now you have doubled down. Thanks Dave and sorry we couldn’t see you and your G Ma in Arizona this winter, only got to Yuma. Will have to track you down in NM.
@@lapidarydave unjust got some rough with pink tourmaline in it. The tourmaline is quite brittle, so hopefully I can figure out how to work it and get some great cabs out of it.
@@DeVerneAugustus you could always stabilize it with some kind of resin like cactus juice in a vacuum chamber or even mix epoxy with acetone And let it sit for two or three weeks it’ll penetrate the stone and it will be better for cutting after he dries
Great video for ideas. I am currently using that same corded drill he used as a flat lap with the diamond pads to polish slabs with a squirt bottle for water. Once it warms up a bit i will have to tinker
Great video Dave, some of those ideas are genius, you work with what you have. I saved some money by buying a B series cabbing machine from Cabking, they claimed it was slightly louder than their A series. Then I made my own shields from 20l plastic cans from work. I need to find a cheap saw for cutting 3”-5” rocks.
Great video and I really like your use of a drill press as a flat lap! I built the flat lap made in the video by the dude from Brazil? It works fantastic! I'm now working on building a sphere/marble grinder/polisher.
That's awesome, cheers brother, I have some lapidary disc's in the post and was thinking about using them on my drill press, so this came in handy at the right time. 🤙💚✌️
Super Grinder - 7 to 10 years ago the tile saw blades could be had pretty cheap (7 bucks at HarborF) soa a stack of 5 would give you a 1/2 in.+ diamond wheel for $35 now the same blade is $20 or more and I think a plated or sintered wheel is a better long term deal. If you plan to do another one of these videos I can show you my 5 gallon bucket tumbler or (i hope) my 6 foot drag saw (building it next summer)
I'd be afraid of water getting into some of those direct motors & getting zapped. Not all were not sealed case. Have some med issues going on. My home made multi wheel lap got put on hold. When I can stand again(??) I'll finish it /send pics.
Hey dave, thanks for the video. Aren’t folks ingenious when it comes to mcgyvering machines?! I’m trying to do this myself and was wondering if you could only have one flat lap grinding disc what kind would it be? Also does the aluminum master lap sit underneath whichever grinding disc you use? Newbie here so forgive the lack of know how. Thanks!
if o could only use on grinding flat lap it would be 180 i don’t use backing laps on tile saw for grinding disk but you definitely need them for soft polishing disks
Great Stuff! Warsh yer duds n tumble stones all in the same day! ... Good idea, the caveat in beginning.... yeah people, be care~ful while tinkering around wif that janky old gear.
I think the tire was too fast for the rocks to be able to grip and travel up the side. It's the tumbling impact that does the grinding, not so much just the spinning of the container.

so.. a long time ago when I was introduced to lapidary work this crazy old hippy.. probably 25.. 26 even... old guy... showed me how to vibrate tumble in a bucket... and.. go to any dry washes and collect sand... separate with screens... volcanic ash is mostly AuPt and AuPd in sub microscopic unit cells that are 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness like diamond
he had a vibration thinggummy that he put old car batteries on and shook the lead oxide off and created reusable car batteries.. you can get fresh sulfuric acid for car batteries at NAPA auto parts stores
kaolinite clay is mostly AuPd.. palladium with gold in the unit cells...with double double covalent bonds.. not metallic bonds... so it doesn't pass electricity.. it's a room temperature superconductor

Always remember electricity and water don't mix. Take that into account when designing your own equipment or copying someone's ideas.

weathered volcanic ash is kaolinite clay... which is where opal is found.. in fault lines... it's a dandy abrasive for fine finishing
fault lines are the lowest spots in the landscape.. all secondary mineralization occurs in fault lines
kaolinite clay is mostly AuPd.. palladium with gold in the unit cells...with double double covalent bonds.. not metallic bonds... so it doesn't pass electricity.. it's a room temperature superconductor
it is transparent to magnetic energy.. and it is diamagnetic... it's the only gold stuff that sticks to a magnet... ya can't miss it
