it really would've. I see no reason why he should've destroyed it. They didn't even make a bit out of it and show the footage of him being dared, so it was a complete waste...
For anyone wondering about the button colors; that's the same button pattern Japanese/European SNES controllers used. The fact they went for the Nintendo layout instead of the more common Xbox layout is interesting, to say the least.
The ayn odin does not use the xbox layout. It uses the snes layout from nintendo. It is obvious if you think about it. They are trying to mimic retro nintendo handhelds in a switch form factor.
You can install Windows 10 for ARM on this and play actual PC games with Steam and x86 emulation on ARM. You can play Tomb Raider 2016 on this. It's a mini-SteamDeck but on ARM!
They're likely going with Nintendo colors due to the GC ports on the back, similar to how the analog triggers have that little area at the very end where you have to press harder, like the GC controller.
It's not too odd, everyone who bought this device are going to use it for emulation anyways and we all know it's mostly Nintendo games that people are likely to emulate which this layout is perfect for.
I think the Steam Deck docking station is made with some form of portability in mind in case you don't have another powered USB-C hub. It would be much easier to have a SATA to USB enclosure that costs $10 (and that doesn't need screws, is easier to replace and can be used with all compatible devices) than to travel with that kind of full featured dedicated dock of that shape. Please don't get me wrong, I still think it's a cool dock but it's probably not intended for carry.
Wonder how hard it would be to crack open and swap the buttons around.... I assume they've all got those notches that prevent the builders from putting them in wrong but thats not hard to modify if the depth is the same on all 4.
Anthony. The biggest question wasn't asked: If you removed the plastic front screen cover, would the Steam Deck plug into that and work properly? Like, 64/Cube controller ports AND the drive bay?
So a few quick corrections; The Odin Lite, Base and Pro will actually all come with a 6,000mah battery (apparently it turned out cheaper for AYN to do it this way). The “cursed” controller layout does not matter so much as you can set the controller to mimic a Xbox controller layout in the settings, so despite what the buttons say, they behave under the standard layout. A significant issue with the dock is that it does not automatically map controllers plugged into the dock, so these need to be manually changed when you use the dock and then manually changed back to the Odin when your done using the dock. Useful to know there are currently community projects to port windows and Linux to this device. Windows 11 does successfully run on it and has some compatibility with windows gaming. Games of note, Hades, Skyrim and Rimworld. Current efforts are looking to dual booting compatibility.
This thing looks awesome. I love the idea of retro gaming handhelds, but never can justify buying one that's so narrowly focused. This looks like it would be great for that pluss gamepass, steamlink, etc. Especially for the price. Hope to see maybe a full LTT review on this one. Maybe a full comparison on handhelds for emulation and game streaming.
when you popped the back off that my jaw dropped because what I saw is what all docks honestly need I know the steam deck has large drives on the ready and SD card slots but I will always gladly add an additional spinning disk or SATA SSD to a system if that part of it isn't for portability, will they release a version that's strictly the dock and is there a way to install Linux on it so you can make it just an all-around PC?
it's a snapdragon 845 soc, meaning it's just a normal phone processor based on arm (though still a really capable one) you could theoretically get linux on this thing if you want, but it'd be a stripped down arm based OS, not all that helpful
The Snapdragon 845 has very good Linux mainline support (wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Qualcomm_Snapdragon_845_(SDM845)). It should be possible to port it, even though that's probably still a lot of work.
Facts: The ABXY buttons's colors are from the Super Famicom controller! The locations are also on that same controller, but they're also used on the Wii (Classic Controller), Wii U and Switch This means that it's more like the Nintendo trademark location.
The AYN Odin is honestly the best handheld for most people tbh, it’s able to play all of the great android games (although there is not that much), and more importantly, can play emulators very well like wii and ps2. It’s also small enough to fit in a (big?) pocket
I have an SD855 based Samsung phone and it doesn't handle PS2 via AtherSX all that well honestly so yeah I perosnally wouldn't be running PS2 on the Odin any time soon. So for me the Steam Deck is still the better option at $400 for the BAse model which is honestly all you require for Emulation purposes with all your roms on an sd card.

I believe purple USB A means higher amperage than standard USB A allows for, e.g. higher than ~3 amps (at 5 volt). It’s usually found on power inverters/chargers and not on cables from my experience, though. Edit: Looks like purple USB-A plugs don’t exist as a standard plug (or port) color. They’re therefore used proprietarily by manufacturers, often being the equivalent to a Teal USB-A (3.1) plug speed wise, and may be able to handle additional amperage, especially in the case of HUAWEI SuperCharge compatible plugs.
Cons of the dock: system can overheat when docked, as the rear fan gets completely cut off. Those GameCube ports are upside-down, which means you can't use the WaveBird wireless controllers (good luck making that fit right upside-down). May be coming in a future firmware update, but the 4K HDMI out does not work at all on either of my 2 TVs or 4K monitor (tried 4 different cables. Hopefully not a defect of my dock. 1080p port works just fine).
Some TV's have a setting called "hdmi ultra deep color" or "HDMI UHD color" in the display settings and you might have to turn it on or off. That might get it to work.
@@Justin-xq3ip Appreciate the reply for info! Unfortunately, I have neither of those on my TVs (HDMI 2.1), nor on my 4K PC monitor. I'm beginning to lean more on the issue that I might have a defective dock.
@@th3oryO I'm probably just going to break into it and gut it, put it into my own 3D printed case (with a fan), and see if I cant put all the ports on the front, and USBs on the side.
Also, consider that when using the Odin on the dock, the fan is relatively blocked. Even when you run this device in "sport mode" consider heating issues when running intensive games. Ayn should have considered making a fan opening into the dock to better facilitate air flow.
I have an Odin, you missed the part that it has two built-in overclocking modes you can switch to on the fly which activate the fan. This can emulate up to Wii and PS2 games. And arguably is better than the Deck for cloud gaming with it's real 1080p screen / battery battery life and more comfortable form factor as opposed to the Deck's max 1280x800 resolution.
@@vicariouschism86 True, for Wii and lower the Odin Is just better, however the Deck allows you to do way more than just emulate and if you are using the deck just for emulation I don't think it's that worth it unless you really want to play a certain Wii U, PS3 or Yuzu game. Two different use cases for sure.
@@oplkfdhgk the actual throughput in sequential is actually faster on USB 3.1, but it's much much slower for hard drives because of the latency of the controller. USB is only faster when copying large files, when a program requests to read a file there's a much larger delay though before it starts reading it so it's actually slower when you're booting off of it, like 100 times slower.
Okay an all round good device with no obvious faults AND an awesome not overpriced dock? I didn't even know I need a new handheld but this intrigued me.
Almost definitely not. Nintendo made their dock proprietary and although they use usb-c on the switch, they did not follow USB-C protocol in terms of power delivery. Even the 3rd-party Switch Docks have to have boards in them specific to the Switch, and I highly doubt Ayn would go to the added expense of allowing their dock to be used with another console.
This thing is really cool, there’s people on the internet that hace turned the ODIN into a budget steam deck by installing windows on it and pc games. The problem with that though, is that the battery duration decreases a lot.

@@thelookofdisapproval8234 And I think you're overestimated what this 845 oc can do, for one the 845 GPU runs at 787 while 860 runs at 750 so it is slightly faster but the 860 has more computing units not to mention other specs that make the 860 superior. And while true that my X3 will thermal throttle that's not a big issue as both devices will power throttle sooner since both CPU and GPU are on the same chip So the only time when you'll see the boosted GPU speed is if the CPU runs at less than 20%, anything higher and the GPU will be starved for power and forced to dowclock. 845 is in that weird spot where it has barely enough power to run some PS2, GC games but far too much power to run everything else, so that oc and active cooling aren't fully taken advantage of IMHO.

it really would've. I see no reason why he should've destroyed it. They didn't even make a bit out of it and show the footage of him being dared, so it was a complete waste...
From what I've seen in other reviews and on the Odin subreddit, it fits extremely well. Edge-to-edge, no gaps.
For anyone wondering about the button colors; that's the same button pattern Japanese/European SNES controllers used. The fact they went for the Nintendo layout instead of the more common Xbox layout is interesting, to say the least.
Fact check time! Button layout, lettering and colours are far from cursed - they’re ripped directly from the Japanese/European SNES controller.
The ayn odin does not use the xbox layout. It uses the snes layout from nintendo. It is obvious if you think about it. They are trying to mimic retro nintendo handhelds in a switch form factor.
That dock got my more excited than the actual device 🤯🤣
One of the coolest things is Odin supports windows on snapdragon 845. So you can install windows 10 on it and play some PC games
dude the ayn odin deserves its own review. Anthony you really havent scratched the surface of what the odin is capable of
You can install Windows 10 for ARM on this and play actual PC games with Steam and x86 emulation on ARM. You can play Tomb Raider 2016 on this. It's a mini-SteamDeck but on ARM!
7:00 The colours of the ABYX buttons are based off the EU SNES controller and the "New 3DS". Still a bit odd though
I wonder if a third part would develop a Steam Deck dock that has a SATA enclosure built in.
That explains the story thing with the bent screen protector from a week ago, I thought Anthony broke the console!
The S.D. is likely too thick
No
You'd have to plug it in upside-down I think

The AYN Odin is honestly the best handheld for most people tbh, it’s able to play all of the great android games (although there is not that much), and more importantly, can play emulators very well like wii and ps2. It’s also small enough to fit in a (big?) pocket
I have an SD855 based Samsung phone and it doesn't handle PS2 via AtherSX all that well honestly so yeah I perosnally wouldn't be running PS2 on the Odin any time soon. Natively compatible on windows?
I believe purple USB A means higher amperage than standard USB A allows for, e.g. higher than ~3 amps (at 5 volt). It’s usually found on power inverters/chargers and not on cables from my experience, though.
Edit: Looks like purple USB-A plugs don’t exist as a standard plug (or port) color. They’re therefore used proprietarily by manufacturers, often being the equivalent to a Teal USB-A (3.1) plug speed wise, and may be able to handle additional amperage, especially in the case of HUAWEI SuperCharge compatible plugs.
That Dock has got to be the best selling feature for all retro gamers, I mean those connections are superb. The console itself is also impressive
When he broke the screen protector he broke my heart.

This device can sustain it's performance for longer, and with it's built-in overclocking, it can perform closer to 855-865 at expense of battery.
Running 845 has some pros as well, windows and Linux support this chip, so you can install those OS as well
@@thelookofdisapproval8234 And I think you're overestimated what this 845 oc can do, for one the 845 GPU runs at 787 while 860 runs at 750 so it is slightly faster but the 860 has more computing units not to mention other specs that make the 860 superior.
And while true that my X3 will thermal throttle that's not a big issue as both devices will power throttle sooner since both CPU and GPU are on the same chip
So the only time when you'll see the boosted GPU speed is if the CPU runs at less than 20%, anything higher and the GPU will be starved for power and forced to dowclock.
845 is in that weird spot where it has barely enough power to run some PS2, GC games but far too much power to run everything else, so that oc and active cooling aren't fully taken advantage of IMHO.
