A Day of Filming a Documentary Series

- This was our first day of filming 'The Athens Urbanist' documentary series, coming in 2024. Here I show my videographer/editor Maria-Elpida Keridu the ropes on how to film.
One thing that I've learned is that while filming a documentary can go by quickly, editing will take a long while.
We filmed 'The Athens Urbanist' in a brisk fun-filled two weeks in July 2023.
However we decided to film a documentary that isn't scripted beforehand, unlike many video essays you may see on RUclips today. I want to give you an immersive feeling of getting acquainted with a city. So we are finding the story in the editing room.
It's December 2023 and we have 4 episodes done, with 2 more to edit.
As Maria is hard at work, along with our assistant editor Katerina, I decided to look back to our footage and see if I can piece together a vlog.
All of the footage here is from Day 0. Before we officially started filming. It was the day Maria and I met in Athens, so I can hand over my camera so she can get acquainted with the gear.
Most of this footage will be left on the cutting room floor. So I thought I'd release it as a bonus vlog! Don't worry you won't get spoilers here.

It really does take a lot of work, but I’m glad it looks easy, that’s what matters!
I used to transcribe a lot of production footage, including logging B-roll. It was an interesting way to learn how hours of footage is actually put together into a 30 - 60 minute TV show (minus the time for ads) or a longer documentary film.
