    Flashing is very very important. Choose contractor carefully. I had metal slate and the flashing/caulking around chimney and valeys of our Tudor home was not done right. The texas heat contract and expand. When the adhesive/caulking used started cracking water ran into roof filled air conditioner air hander pan and so much water came in that 1st and 2nd emergency flow pipe was not enough. It shorted the emergency electric pump and water ran onto ceiling and burned/shorted wiring, leaving us with a fire hazard and a very unhappy insurance company. Well that is how I undertand it. If you pick metal shingles make sure the flashing around chimneys are done right and in valeys are extended deep under the metal shingles so that it does not trap water. Inform yourselves and pick contractor woth an outstanding reputation. Read your contracts. There is a difference between lifetime warranty and a 'limited lifetime warrnty' There are two homes in my street alone getting rid of same roof after a hail storm. It may be just that we had the same contractor. However we are both going standing seam with striations. Do your homework. After your house your roof is probably second most expensive investment...that and a upset Mrs.
    I know nothing about roofing but damn...lesson learned. You guys have REALLY been a great help and i am having a contract rviewed and revised by attorney with new contractor where we can meet each other in middle on my new roof. If you don't know you just don't know. This channel has been an enormous help. Thank you

    I have solar panels. Can you install solar on metal shingles?

  • @joefudd
    @joefudd 3 года назад +2

    What are the differences for:
    Walking on these? Which can be walked upon without damaging them or making dents? Also traction and grip safety so as to not to easily slide off and fall?
    Snow and ice accumulation slide off dangers (possibly injuring people standing below)?
    I have seen commercial standing seam and externally fastened flat metal roofs in my area have to install snow/ice baffles/ridges near the bottom edges to prevent this slide off and they are ugly!
    Sunlight heat buildup in the attic or insulating thermal barrier or reflective R value? How much better?

    • @davidchillton1744
      @davidchillton1744 2 года назад

      Well you can have the “ugly” snow stops/ snow bar. Or you can get hit with the snow sliding off if you don’t like the look of them

    Roof plumbing contractor of over 40 years standing here. I gotta say that stamped metal tiles are utter garbage. Give me a long length steel sheet in any form for longevity and robustness.

    Thanks for the informative video. I have a few questions. What is the difference in expected life between standing seam metal, metal shingles and asphalt/fiberglass shingles? How do you decide if you want aluminum vs steel? Are there any considerations for putting up solar panels over the roof?

    • @TheMetalRoofingChannel
      @TheMetalRoofingChannel  4 года назад +3

      Glad you liked it! The exact answer to your questions will have to be based on your actual building design and location, but there are some considerations I can give you right away. This video on metal shingles vs. asphalt shingles: ruclips.net/video/gD6ck6Bhnck/видео.html and this video on standing seam vs. asphalt shingles: ruclips.net/video/EqtM-yQuiPQ/видео.html will give some guidelines for life expectancy of all three roofing types. When it comes to aluminum vs. steel, both are great choices. Aluminum is the best choice if you're near saltwater, but steel is generally less expensive. You can learn about the differences between the two here: ruclips.net/video/1JH5orwxC4s/видео.html Metal roofing is a great system for solar panels because the panels will often outlast a shorter life roofing system. Standing seam is perfect for solar, as there are attachment kits that allow panels to be locked onto the roof without penetrating the metal. I hope this helps, and let me know if you have anymore questions! -Thad

      Life expectancy depends on location, weather, and paint finish. As for aluminum vs steel, it seems stupid to go with steel, no matter how much you try and protect it, it will eventually rust. Aluminum however can’t rust

  • @peterparker9286

    What I mean to say was metal to metal you must have the same installer to get an exact amount. Hand crafted details in standing seam it is a closed system unlike the metal shingle j c channel systems that open system dont work well up in the snow belt 24g true standing seam way to go. I liked the guy in the middle until he said go over the top of asphalt to save money..... what

    I'm wondering why we don't just have flat pieces of metal in rectangular shape and nail them down like we would asphalt shingles...not as sexy or profitable for the companies that make metal roofing materials but will be as effective and long-lasting as any other metal roofing products.

    • @davidchillton1744
      @davidchillton1744 2 года назад +1

      It would catch the updraft easily since it is lighter than a shingle, and I don’t know about you but I don’t want sheet metal coming for my head when there’s a breeze, hence why they hem the corners on most metal shingles and lock on 2 or more sides usually

    Decra is junk..standing seam roofs in our area are cheap and cheaply installed. The only way to go is to go with a company that backs the product with a legit warranty and knows what they are doing. Doing a roof cheaply gives you exactly that..
