After watching this review, I visited the Seiko AD and witnessed this watch in person. It is actually amazing for this price point what Seiko has managed to offer. You are correct on the fit and finish on macro shots, no imperfections even though I've found a few on entry level Presages... This one is amazing... It actually comes wears smaller for 40mm case size due to smaller dial which's only 32mm... I disagree when you say it wears larger... Overall really compelling package..
I like that the day date is white because it works with the symmetry of the dial as the hour marker on the 9 o clock is also a horizontal block similarly sized to the date window.
Second! Let’s goooooo this is what I’ve been waiting for from Seiko. Perfect dimensions. Modern style. No annoying features. Nice review and visuals as always AB!
I believe 5kx more commonly is used to refer to the dive styled 5’s you referenced. This is more well known as the “dresskx”. Great review, great affordable offering 😎
I'll never understand Seikos allergy to Sapphire. What terrible business decision to avoid Sapphire. It's like being proud that you're the last house to still have a rotary dial phone. Shame on them.
I agree. I recently purchased one of Seikos limited edition Presage watches. Great looking watch. But for almost $500, it should include sapphire. My Hamilton Khaki Field costs less and has it. Heck, I have a $160 Orient that has sapphire.
I have two of the new Seiko 5's in my collection one of which is the all green dive watch and the other the two tone dress KX. Both are great watches but as you said they should have upgraded to Sapphire crystal at the price they come in. I purchased one of the Seiko Solar watches about 18 months ago which cost less than the new Seiko 5's and that has a Sapphire crystal in it. Perhaps they will do this in future releases.
nope, that would make it look like an almost good watch (if they do something about that chapter ring along with that), which goes against the Seiko marketing strategy in this price tier.
Another great review! Thanks for pairing it with other straps as well! Side note, the “Hustle” neon light is a bit distracting with that clean, minimal, black background, other wise, great shots
What make this watch stand out for me is it's simplicity. Easy to compare it with the Tudor BB 36 and 41. But it is definitely a Seiko and has kept most of the characteristics that you see on so many of it's other models. I'm picking one up. I like the gilt dial but will go with a more plain dial for even more simplicity to the esthetics. Funny, this may the best release by Seiko in a long time. The only problem is this watch should retail for about $250 and sell for about $175. Further down the road I'd love for Seiko to do a couple limited editions with sapphire crystal and maybe a no date version with some funky colorways. That's what's great about this watch. There is so much that could be done. Great start though!
Since this just got released, my problem now is weather to get this or the Orient Kamasu. 200m WR, sapphire, handwinding, screwdown crown (tho janky at the ends), and much cheaper. But I like the simple, classic look of the new 5KX, if this was 38mm, I wouldn't hessitate.
The orient kamasu is not a competitor to this so you don't have to worry about picking. The bigger question here is, do you want a dress watch or a diver.,The Kamasu is a diver hence the specifications you outlines (i.e water resistance, sapphire and crown)
I had this one today, just arrived at my dealer's shop and i snapped it right away! You should check out the SRPE51 gray in bracelet! This series is the best thing even happened since it was introduced. Some may dislike the new logo, to me it is a new and refreshing change from the past. Bracelet is very well made and solid, albeit the inner folding clasp is pressed metal The finishing is very good and the dial design is simple and attractive! The choice of Hardlex, might be a good one. The problem with sapphire crystal is that it is too reflective even after few layers of AR coating. Hardlex + Ar coating = produces a totally transparent feel that allows the dial to display its full potential.
Nice video, just subscribed. I only got a Seiko 5 last week, the Sports SRPD51K2, blue dial which I love. I was extremely surprised with the movement accurate. Far better than advertised. I know watch companies cover themselves by giving bigger variations than the actuality. I put mine on a Weishi Time Grapher and my result was between +2 and +3 seconds a day, with a beat error of only 0.3 milliseconds. That's right up there with the likes of Omega and even Rolex. I was extremely impressed. I do accept I might have been lucky as even the dial ring lined up exactly perfectly which can be an issue on some watches. Very enjoyable video that covered all the bases..
with an snxs79 style dial and hands i could imagine it looking awesome, but then there will be those other clickbait channels calling it “hot garbage” because it isn’t dirt cheap anymore.
Seiko did a good job listening to its audience(THANK YOU SEIKO!!!), ppl will always be demanding no matter what is improved on the SKX. We wanted a smaller watch they gave us a 40mm (finally!!!! after 1000 years of wait lol) which is something not so common to Seiko as they love their 42mm+. They also fixed the bezel alignment issue which was one of the major issues. Nobody complained about the red font, on the Day window from the original SKX but yet, ppl are now complaining about it from the newer models🤣. Ppl are demanding a sapphire crystal, if that was done the price would have probably increased around $400-$750 and I'm sure people would have complained that it's too expensive. Gosh! make up your mind ppl as you can't always have everything, just appreciate the watch for once. 😅
Please, have an idea before defending Seiko blindly. A sapphire crystal costs $ 20-$25 while mass producing. Maybe the price would go up $20, which would still make the watch very affordable !!
As always, impressive video. The 5 has a heritage to be respected. I wasn't a fan of the colourway you chose but I know there others available. On this one, the major thing that caught my eye, in a bad way, was the crown-guard. Ouch ! That looks very sharp and would cause injury. Weird you didn't pick up on that.
I see a lot of people saying 38mm would be better, I have a 40mm and I kept wondering if it was 41 or 42mm. I had no clue 40 mm looks this small on the wrist unless my vision is not good. I am not a big guy, a wrist size 7inches and I see the 42 mm looks great to me personally and on the wrist. Maybe I’ll just keep this one and just wait for some other great finds. One thing I can’t get my head around is why the GMT watches don’t have a date function as Seiko 5 GMT with a white dial and a blue or orange gmt hand just looks so stunning but no date.
Seiko laughs @ the community while monetizing on the enthusiasts by releasing a bulky fake diver minus the bezel. If I buy this while drunk, I'd have to pair it with a penguin suit and flip flops to avoid looking ridiculous.
I bought the olive green w/matching nato strap about 3 weeks ago for $230 ref. SRPE65K1. I highly recommend going with a nato strap version and the Non-US spec models. I really wish people, especially watch youtubers would stop calling it a 5kx. This whole update was to try and move it even further away from that comparison but yet you're still going to call it that. Seiko actually listened to every complaint from last years model but somehow people are still complaining. What makes me even more mad is people complaining that the sub $300 price is too much but the same people will pay $500-800 for an unproven microbrand that's using the Seiko invented movement inside of this watch.
Don't know where you live, but on my internet, people complained about the glass and water resistance before anything else. Also, the priest in my community said it's a sin to buy this watch on that garbage bracelet it comes with.
@@andrei-cosmin.popa85 well, if you read my post, I recommended and bought the nato strap version. Second, this isn't a dive watch, so how is 100m of water resistance not ok? And third, it's a $250 watch with a very reliable hacking and hand winding movement, very handsome and comes from a strong brand with a deep horological history that you never have to worry about going out of business and not honoring warranties. If you have no money or this is your first watch then maybe try something else, but I would never expect a sapphire crystal for under $300 nor need one, as Hardlex is right below sapphire as far as hardness goes.
@@watchesandcaps2566 hold on, Kimosabee... So it's not a dive watch, I agree with that, but it just happens to look identical with the SKX minus the bezel. It's just for store credit but maybe you can work out a deal. There's no doubt many of your viewers are buying that strap. No one else is talking about it either. Keep up the great work.
Watch Collecting Strategy true! The skx and 5kx is 42 mm but wouldn’t removing the thick rotation bezel expose a bezel that’s smaller underneath? Going to try to measure and see if that new bezel size without the rotating part and test this theory.
@mico No actually the crystal is smaller on the 5KX, this one has a larger crystal and smaller case. The bezel of the skx or 5kx is close to 42mm as well. They did change the case, dial size & crystal on this one
I have purchased this watch again and will keep it this time and I am actually liking the hollow bracelet funny enough as it is very light and comfortable like the old vintage bracelets.
This watch is gorgeous. I am really fighting myself not to buy this watch right now because I'm tryna be more strict on myself financially but damn this is hard.
Black Bay 36/41 is very similar indeed. Prefer it to the 5kx (which I prefer to the highly overrated skx - good in its day, but replaced mine with the much better Turtle) Like it, would be better without the date tho. Cheers 👍🏻
It’s a fantastic looking watch, thanks for the review. I think the white date wheel balances the 9 marker. A 40mm sport watch with 100m water resistance and a 4R36 movement is a bargain at the price. The days of the SARB 33/35 value , with their sapphire and 6R15, are long gone. Seiko is still delivering good value here, the folded long bracelet isn’t the best, but it looks good and the watch is a stunner on leather. I don’t have an issue with hardlex. I would like to see the day/date window painted white just on the small cutout line "inside" edge of the frame, or even chromed ( that would reflect light and minimize the shadow inside the date window edge.., which now blends in with the shadow on the datewheel and makes it look darker ) but hey it still is a Seiko 5, Maybe connect the "Seiko" & "5" logo to a 1 piece applied abstraction, and move it upwards just a mm.. also move the "automatic" logo down a mm ??
You don't want one of these, these are the US spec versions. You can buy the JDM versions online at a couple retailers. I got the olive green dial with matching nato strap and brushed case which isnt even available in US from Watch Nation. I got mine about 3 weeks ago and they were even charging a little below the retail price you see at long island.

shadow on the datewheel and makes it look darker )
but hey it still is a Seiko 5,
Maybe connect the "Seiko" & "5" logo to a 1 piece applied abstraction,
and move it upwards just a mm..
also move the "automatic" logo down a mm ??

I got mine on Long Island Watches
@@watchcollectingstrategy sold out, but good catch!
I'm sure he will re-stock it soon
You don't want one of these, these are the US spec versions. You can buy the JDM versions online at a couple retailers. I got the olive green dial with matching nato strap and brushed case which isnt even available in US from Watch Nation. I got mine about 3 weeks ago and they were even charging a little below the retail price you see at long island.
@@watchesandcaps2566 actually hes selling the JDM versions as seen in his latest video.
